Sadly i was disappointed with Sharper Edge knife sharpening there at the Farmers Market. I brought him two good quality Kershaw pocket knives to sharpen. He left them in worse shape than when I brought them. To now have uneven edges and one of them has a divot towards the bottom of it. My brother's knife also has a ding in it that wasn't there before. I dropped my 7 knives off at David's place and within a few hours he sent me a text saying they were ready. $52 for 7 knives. I used the for the first time today and while I've always sharpened them myself his professional sharpening made cutting an onion feel like butter. He also told me they were really old and next time they loose their edge to let them go. Everything went well! I found this gentleman at the Studio City Farmers Market & then rediscovered him during Covid. Maybe he was doing this before Covid, but he set up a system where one can bring their knives to his house. He has instructions about how and where to leave your knives, scissors, etc. He'll shoot you a total when he's done, along with the total. You bring cash, leave it in the basket & pick up your AMAZINGLY well sharpened knives, etc. He is kind enough to let you know if you need to replace some of your old knives or (as was the case with my serrated knives), they were on their last sharpening. I wanted to check out this service based on reviews of his work at farmers markets and was happy to learn he does same-day drop off/pick up service. Four of my kitchen knives came back duller than when I dropped them off. He kindly offered to re-work them and somehow they came back duller again, like they weren't touched. Like crush a tomato dull. I can run a nked finger across them and not be cut. He said the knives are old...sure, but I've had them sharpened successfully a year ago, they come back razor sharp. We don't abuse them. No nicks, no bends. I hit them with our home sharpener for a few minutes and they got sharp. He was very easy to communicate with, and prices are good, but I was really disappointed based on my expectations from all the good reviews. I'm still confused why they couldn't get sharp. David is FANTASTIC! This was my first time using a knife sharpening service and I am so glad I chose Sharper Edge. I emailed David the night before I planned on dropping off my knives to get more information on how everything works with his contact free drop-off, and he responded within an hour with instructions on how to drop them off at his home work station. I had David sharpen 3 chef knives for me and he texted me 45 minutes after drop off stating the knives were ready for pickup. Super fast turnaround time. His prices are super fair and well worth it. The quality of work is amazing and all three knives were sharpened to perfection! Since this was my first time using a knife sharpening service, I naturally wasn't comfortable giving my expensive/valuable knives for sharpening. Totally amazing. I have two sets of over 20 year old Henkel kitchen knives that were in desperate need of new edges. I found David here on Yelp and couldn't be happier. His website was down so I just called him on a Saturday. He told me where he'd be that Sunday but I could just drop the knives off at his home workshop that day. I'm lucky in that he lives 5 mins from my house in Sherman Oaks. Normally you can drop off your knives with your info and he'll send you a quote. I was fortunate to catch him there and he said I could come back in an hour and they'd be ready but I asked if I could stay and watch him work, and he obliged. He is a total perfectionist and wouldn't quit till those old stubborn knives were razor sharp. It was fun chatting with him while he ripped through my six knives in about a half hour. Just call him and he'll text you what you need to drop off your knives or look for him at some local Farmer's markets. Previously, I had tried a gourmet cooks' retailer (epic fail: they scratched and ultimately replaced several of our Shuns) and an independent hardware store that subbed the work out (adequate, but about 70% more than Dave). I assumed I would drop them off and have to pick them up in a week or so but to my surprise, he happily sharpened them while I waited. While he only charges $6.00 for each large knife, I was embarrassed to open my wallet and realize that I didn't have enough to cover the cost. John was nice enough to let me take my knives and gave me his card so that I could send him my payment. (I live close by and decided to drop off cash the next day because of his generosity and excellent service.) John is awesome!!!!! I'm a professional chef and take pride in keeping my knives sharp. Recently my wife gave me a beautiful Japanese knife for my birthday. This knife was the envy of my kitchen until I, foolishly, broke it's tip. I was crushed, but determined to fix it.
