Here is perhaps a strange review: I got my knives sharpened a few weeks ago by Pete and they have been a joy to chop and slice with - truly didn't realize how dull they were. This all became even more clear to me last night, while making dinner. I did something very inadvisable and, in doing so, cut my finger with my very big and sharp knife. Middle finger, at the knuckle. When I finally recovered from the shock enough to assess the damage, I was fascinated and thrilled to see that while the cut was a little deep, it was perhaps the cleanest cut I've ever had in my life. Almost disconcertingly so to be honest. and the cut itself doesn't hurt or sting at all! There wasn't even any blood on the blade, but I washed it off and continued using it to make dinner. All night, I kept saying, "I am so glad I got my knives sharpened by Pete at the Atwater Farmers Market. Can you imagine if the knife had been dull???" read more

After sharpening the chef's knife, a hole was created that ruined the knife and spoiled the set. Further inspection also found scratches in the steel. Will sharpen myself next time as a whole new set will need to be purchased. read more

I spent the last year and a half trying to remember to bring my knife to the farmers market to have it fixed by Pete. It was corroded and the tip had been broken off....so it was F-ed. He was able to fix my knife to look and feel like knew and did the paper test right in front of me. I went home and used it immediately (chopping almonds and strawberries...I know, weird combo to test a knife on haha) and it was like magic! Better than new! Highly recommend. BTW it's cash only so be ready with some $$$. It cost me $10. read more

I should have brought it by months ago but we're all smoothed out now! Thank you so much! The convenience of farmers market location is handy! I found Pete's Knife Sharpening at the Atwater Farmers Market which is on Sundays 9a-2p, at Glendale Blvd and Larga - across from the Wells Fargo. You can park in the Wells Fargo lot too for an easy 60 (or 90min?) free parking! Brought in a whole Ja Henckels kitchen knife block for Pete to sharpen last Sunday around 1130am. Sign says sharpen while you shop and they aren't kidding! 6 knives - 3 large ones and 3 smaller ones, including 2 serrated knives and they were done in 20 minutes. Total was $48. They texted me when it was ready and it was a super easy process. Took them home and they are SHARP! What a difference. They are like I just bought them. Thanks Pete for giving my knives new life! CASH ONLY! read more

I swung by Pete's booth at the Culver City Farmer's Market to get two woefully dull knives sharpened (a chef knife and a paring knife). In less than five minutes, Pete sharpened both blades while I perused vegetables at the market. I highly recommend Pete's services! My newly sharpened knives are vastly improved, almost like new, for just $13. Thanks very much, Pete, I'm happy that you chose knife sharpening as your fun, post-retirement hobby! read more

Pete is the man! Quality all the way around and at fair prices. I wouldn't take my steel anywhere else.

What can I say that hasn't already been said here? Pete is the best kind of person to get help from -- professional, efficient, transparent about his process, affordable, and (best of all) a delightful conversationist. My story begins on Christmas Eve. We're hosting a dinner party with our closest family friends, and a delicious-looking roast sits on the table. I stand over it, carving knife in hand, smile on my face. Talking and laughter surrounds me as I lean in, place knife to meat, and begin to carve. I slice back and forth and inspect my work. The meat appears untouched. My brow furrows. Did I just imagine I was cutting? Was I hallucinating? Am I having a transient ischemic stroke? Did I accidentally use a spoon? I try again, exerting more pressure onto the meat. Again, not a scratch on it. I try cutting it again, SAWING at it like some kind of maniac, leaning my entire weight on it, WILLING it to just let me CUT YOU, damn you! -- still nothing. Sweat beads my forehead. I notice the room is silent, but I'm afraid to look up. In the silence I hear a guest's belly rumble hungrily and, somewhere distant, a ghost cow's laughter echoing in the winter wind. I curse under my breath and have another go at it, this time summoning the strength of ancient ancestors, primitive hunters from the thickets of distant Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization and, I'm pretty sure, the original inventors of carving knives. After what feels like a month of sawing at the meat, my should is burning and my carving hand is cramping, but a chunk of meat has been parted from the roast and lies on a plate in a pool of blood. It looks like some ravenous beast has tore it off using molars alone, but the deed is frickin' done. Three hours later, everyone has a variously-sized hunk of room-temperature meat in front of them and I've made an oath to myself to never ever let my cutlery make a fool of me again. Fast-forward ten months and I remember the oath. I must act fast -- winter is coming and with it another Christmas roast. When I hand the blade over to Pete and recount this story, his eyes shine with empathy. Here's a man who knows the gravity a knife can hold in a man's life -- a blade can bend his destiny around its edge. He inspects the knife and explains details about its make. The spacing of the serrations, the bevel, the angle of the edge, and the reasons for its dullness. He reads it like a fortune teller perusing a palm. I suddenly feel a surge of forgiveness for the knife. It knew not what sins it wrought upon me -- 'twere but a child, made imperfectly by an imperfect maker. Fortunately, Pete knew how to correct the problem of its dullness: by sharpening it. And sharpen it, he did. I had my knife back the next day and the price was right. Pete: thank you, my man. You're a hell of a lot of fun to talk with and you're amazing with knives. I can't WAIT to sink mine into the next roast! read more

It is a rare thing in this day and age to find someone with real "craft". Pete is deeply knowledgable about blade restoration and maintenance and has brought back a very sentimental knife from the dead...twice. It is beyond sharp. Great service and education regarding general knife care and a most excellent Sharpening on my Shun Santoku knife ... see?

I tried to sharpen my roommate's knife as a surprise, using a whet stone. While my intention may have been in the right place, my skill set was not. I wound up creating a valley on the blade's edge. Uh oh. So I hit the panic button, and I brought it to Pete. Not only did he work out my misstep (like it never even happened) he also got it to a pristine shine and now it's good as new - all in about 20 minutes. Can't ask for better than that! Next time, I'll just use Pete first. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!! read more

Pete is a nice guy, not too sharp but nice. I'm joking. He's very sharp when it comes to sharpening. He's built himself a sharpening trailer that visits the farmers markets. I found him @ Culver City. He sharpened a 10" chef's and 6" cleaver; $18. We spoke about the process in length because he enjoys what he does, He's a knife nerd. I said I was going to get them "professionally" sharpened instead of the guy with a grinder at the market route I had been taking, but glad I gave him a shot. The knives are sharp now. Took him a couple more, 2 weeks later and got some more advice and info, he's full of it! He said to bring them back in a month for a polish, so that was nice to have some follow up service included. He was sharpening a lot of restaurant knives as well so if the pros trust him that's good. read more

It has taken me a minute to write this review but I realize I just had to do it, because the service was so great I needed to pay it forward. Long story short, I had been trying to find a sharpening service willing to sharpen the teeth on a vintage tape dispenser for many months. After visiting a plethora of locations full of shaking heads and resounding 'no's, I realized I had the piece to be sharpened in my bag on my recent trip to the farmers market. On a whim my husband suggested I ask Pete's to see if they could help out. Listen, it did not work perfectly but the sheer fact that the people at this booth were soooooo willing to help me out and really wanted to make it work made me so unbelievably happy. REAL people being REALLY nice. I hope they read this and know how grateful I am. read more

Pete is great. He sharpened my shin santoku and brought it back to life. Also gave us great tips on how to keep it sharp for longer as well as the blade to stay strong through his life. I brought my set of old hickory carbon steel knives to Pete. Not only did he sharpen my blades, he also taught me a thing or two about knifecare™ & about my old hickories. All in all, the job took about 25 minutes. Considering the fact he was centrally located in my quaint local farmers market, i was able to peruse a selection of the farm fresh goods. We got samples of the freshest citrus, berries, dairies & breads. What a treat! The finished product was sharp as a knife. Pete's passion for blades was superb. He really cares for his craft and takes the time out of his day to share that enthusiasm for cutlery with his customers. Imma bring my sword to Pete next weekend!!! Hope he'll sharpen her up... read more

I've never gotten my kitchen knives sharpened before. I used to think it was quite a superfluous thing, I mean, as long as they can cut, that's fine, right?? Which, true, but if you spend more than even a cursory amount of time in the kitchen, you know what a pain in the ass it can be when it takes you twice as long as it should to chop your vegetables, or when you can't slice your tomatoes thin enough, or when you accidentally (and hypothetically) cut the tip of your finger off because your dull knife slipped. So, in the spirit of efficient, streamlined living, I decided to give knife sharpening a go. I'd seen Pete's stand at the Silver Lake farmers' market months ago, even got his card. I went by a few weeks ago, but he wasn't there, and with a little Internet research, realized he now made weekly stops at the Atwater Village market. This morning, I bundled up my knives in kitchen towels, packed them in a bag and made the trek over the Hyperion Blvd. bridge (a good excuse for some exercise, too). I dropped them off at Pete's and was told that he'd send a text when they were ready--how ingenious. I went and bought some apples and bread, met some friends for brunch at Canelé, then retrieved my newly-sharp knives (payments can be made in cash or with a card). My roommate and I tried them out, and they cut effortlessly through lemons and greens, with hardly any pressure. I am legitimately excited to cook again! I highly recommend Pete and his operation. read more

Pete and his wife run a solid knife sharpening operation. I frequently use his services at his very unique knife sharpening trailer at the Atwater Village Farmer's Market every Sunday morning. I recently asked if he or someone he knew could replace a knife handle, which is a family heirloom that's in heavy rotation in our kitchen. The vendor, they referred me to, was good and cheap. However with the best blade plans, there was a significant delay getting the knife back (months rather than weeks). Yikes!!! I may never see our heirloom again! Long story short, when I mentioned this to Pete, he was able to resolve the situation immediately and the knife was returned with the handle repaired. Pete even took the time to buff out the new handle and sharpen the blade on the house. I'm happy to report the knife is back in my hands and better than new. Pete's Knife Sharpening business does fantastic work, is convenient, and has consistent stellar customer service. Have a knife day! read more

Simply . . . . T H E B E S T ! ! ! I met Pete at the Monrovia Friday Night Festival and Street Fair. He caught my eye because not only have I been meaning to bring my knives in for a good sharpening for a LOOONG time, but there was quite a line and buzz around his super-awesome tent, so it seems he already had some loyal and enthusiastic customers. The first week, I just brought in a few of my mid-grade knives. He was quick, the price was great, and the knives are unbelievable!! The second week I brought in my really expensive German and Japanese knives and was really impressed with the care that he took. But I think I am most impressed about how he breathed new life into some of my inexpensive, low-grade knives -- even they are slicing though everything like butter now! Pete is kind, easy to talk to and a straight shooter. I highly recommend him and his services.
