I was introduced to Universal Comics through a friend who is a regular. And well, now I am a regular too. What I like about this place are: 1) the selection, 2) the owner's knowledge of everything in the store, 3) the prices (30% off), and 4) that I have a pull-list. Having a pull-list makes my life so much easier! I can just walk in and buy my titles. Also, whenever I have questions about a title, Cat, the owner is very honest with me. He is not trying to make a sale, but instead he wants to make sure that you enjoy the book. Also, since he knows what my interests are, he will make suggestions on books that I might like. Also, I would like to comment on another reviewer's remark regarding new non-regular customers. This comic book store is not close to my house, but it is close to my work. So, I visit during my lunch break and in turn bring my co-workers with me into the store. The owner is very friendly to them and is able to successfully help me and agreeably answer their questions. My co-workers aren't huge comic book collectors, but they like to come with me now, just too look at all the neat toys and books that are in the store. Overall, this is my favorite store because not only is the selection great, but Cat treats me like a comic bookee, and not some girl who likes pretty pictures (believe me, I get that ALOT from other comic book stores). read more

Cat is great to me. Knows me by name. Knows what I like and suggests new things. I enjoy every time I get to visit the store. I can see where people looking for older stuff can be let down. Luckily for me I am into New 52 stuff so I'm all good. I especially like his pre-pull service. Just go on his website on Monday. I never walk out empty handed. I am from out of town but make it a requirement to stop in each time I visit Los Angeles. I've been to House of Secrets, Meltdown Comics, etc, but this place has a varied selection and also deals a lot more in the collectible side of things and not just in the comic universal but also TV & Film collectibles - Terminator, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc.. The owner is extremely helpful & friendly, he is partly worth the reason to visit alone - there's no pretentiousness here and there's always a good conversation to be had. Kat knows the industry well and gives excellent options and information regarding the new comic books out there. He goes out of his way to get you what you need while visiting his store. Wednesdays it can get a little crowded, because that's when all the new books come out, but if you have the patience to wait in line, you will be rewarded with the books and info you seek. read more

The New 52 has made my favorite titles suddenly very hard to come by. I actually went to this shop for the first time because they were the only ones in the area who still had Wonder Woman #1 stocked when I got off work the Wednesday it was released. Since moving to LA, I haven't had a "home" shop. I've just been picking up books wherever is most convenient. DJ's has changed that. I am proud to call this my home shop and Cat is a really nice guy. This shop is clean and well organized. Great place for new comics since everything is out on the counter waiting for you. They have figures and back-issues too, but I can't really speak to those since I've only been there for new releases so far. Parking is easy and the location is great for me. I used to shop at this shop when they were at their old location primarily due to convenience and nothing else. The space was good, the layout was good so you can easily find things. When I recently found their new location and went in, I was disappointed on several levels. First of all, their current space is really poor. It's smaller, nothing is displayed prominently where you can find things and is not a very inviting setup. I really dislike their $25 minimum policy for credit cards, which I find to be off putting because it forces the customer to spend more than he or she normally would just to use a credit card. Then there's the most irritating thing that will never make me shop there ever again: price gouging. I went in there looking for a new book that came out that week and they were already reselling it for 4 times the cover value less than three days after the book was released. They're not the only game in town and there are several competitors within a 10 minute drive of this location. They all have better space and don't scalp comics less than a week after their release. I'd suggest going elsewhere to buy your comics. This place is not a fun place to shop. read more

Great store, great staff! Are you worried about being judged for your taste in comics? Not here. Are you worried about being judged as a band wagoner cuz you loved guardians of the galaxy? Not here. Are you worried about asking a dumb/uncool question because you are curious or behind in the times? Not here. Cat and heather create a great atmosphere for customers and so do the customers! You can easily burn two hours just chit chatting or listening in on a conversation. The staff is helpful and will always point you in the right direction, even if it's out the door to another place. New comics are a great deal, bring cash if you can. So many toys and collectibles. Supplies are the best price for bags, boards and boxes. I can't rave enough about this place. Cat the owner is awesome. Walked in, staff immediately asked if I needed help, very attentive.I was looking for a back issue. They didn't have it in stock Cat the owner immediately got on the horn and got it on it's way to me.I've seen this issue at other stores for almost double and triple the price. They got it for me for face $. They are always helpful and eager to answer my questions. Needless to say I've found DJ's Universal Comics are the best in the valley. I'm glad to see i wasn't alone in my experience at DJs and other reviewers had the same thing happen. Being a woman in her early 40s whos been reading comics since she was in her teens means I've been to a fair number of comic book stores. Luckily most stores are no longer like they were in the late 80s-early 90s where if you dared enter the store while being female you were stared down or completely ignored or talked down to like you were 2. Sadly DJs felt like I had entered a time machine and gone back to 1990. The owner stared me down, would not stop harassing me and asking me what I was looking for then laughed at me when I told him, like I had no idea what I was talking about. He wouldn't let me peruse his back issues even though they are kept in boxes out front. then when i went to leave he started on some bragging, inane, long winded story. I almost felt bad for the guy. needless to say i dont feel bad now reading the other reviews. read more

Solid comic book shop that has a better price on new releases than any comic shop in Los Angeles County. The layout is simple and functional - each weeks new releases are laid out on release day across a couple of tables making it easy to get an overview of all of the weeks books. This is a very fun store and the owner very knowledgeable about comics and graphic novels. However if you are a comic dabbler and not a collector this may not be the place for you. The owner seems very friendly with the regulars who order stacks of comics, but for the beginner or someone interested in only a few titles or there purely for research, the owner can come off as a bit imposed upon. I came here last weekend with my girlfriend and her nephew. She had booked marked this comic shop and we were in the area so we decided to stop by. This shop was pretty cool, and the gentleman we spoke with (Sorry, I can't rememebr your name) was very helpful and knowledge able (both with the Comics and and figures being sold as well as local knowledge with local shops...as I don't live around here). I was woefully out of touch with comics when I set foot here for the first time several years ago, having stopped collecting near the end of the black-and-white comics glut of the mid 80's thru early 90's. While I'm far from their best customer (I've maybe made thirty purchases there in total over a half-decade), you absolutely cannot beat this location for contemporary titles and warm service. This place is amazing! Heather and Cat are incredibly knowledgable in just about everything I ask them. They have a weekly pull list for anyone. No membership required or fees. Everything is gimmick free. Also, they are willing to hold them for a week if you can't make it on Wednesday! They offer an amazing discount on new releases and their shop is stacked with awesome figurines and collectables. The owners of this location need to keep their conversations and opinions to themselves. Especially when their working! I unfortunately, was in earshot to hear their offensive conversations about how they have a problem with gay actors and stories. They kept referring it as a forceful push and a Hollywood gay agenda for having gay stories, gay comics, gay everything. If this dude is not working in Hollywood or hasn't read a trade film magazine about the LACK of diversity in film. He should keep his useless, uneducated opinion to himself. Most of Hollywood movies involve white, straight men starring in movies. So, I don't know where he is getting his information. I won't be shopping here anymore since, I am a queer person. And I really felt uncomfortable being inside the store. And it was my first time coming to this store and LAST. I only bought my items cause I already picked my things once he started talking. Also, this place only has DC & Marvel. You won't find graphic novels, Fantagraphics, alternative comics. Although, I did pick up a Brazilian comic from Image, but other than that go somewhere else. read more

A few years ago I decided to get into comics despite never really having read them. A lot of people recommended DJ's, so I went there. There was nobody else in the store but me and the owner. As soon as I said I was looking for suggestions on where to get started, but I knew I enjoyed the Buffy comics, he rolled his eyes. I expressed that I was really interested in reading comics featuring tough female protagonists, and he told me to "Go home and do some research." So I got in my car, drove to a shop in Burbank, and spent all my money there. I've been shopping at that store and reading comic books regularly ever since - I cosplayed as The Dazzler at Comic Con one year, so maybe I'd finally be worthy enough to shop in this guy's precious store - but I would never EVER spend any more of my money at DJ's. Great selection of both comics and toys. Cat gives a killer discount. The best I've found in the metropolitan LA area, a full 30% on most items. And if he doesn't currently have it, he'll work diligently to get it for you. Cat's also incredibly knowlegeable about both what's going on in the industry and often what's coming down the pipe. But I honestly think it's the way he gets to know each of his customers that keeps me coming back. Whereas most comic store owners and operators are pretty aloof and/or too above such concerns, Cat gets to know everyone who comes in regularly. I've only been collecting for a few years, bouncing around comic book stores, this is the first one I call my home base. They have a great system for pull, through their website, which makes it so much easier to pick things out every week, and pick them up whenever I'm free. Most importantly, I can order whatever I want without a condescending store owner judging your "good" or "bad" pulls. Kat and his staff, are awesome.
