I went into this shop to buy a comic for my nephew and was met with some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I asked about a particular comic and its variant covers. Instead of showing me what was available, the owner became hostile and condescending, insisting I needed to be more specific even though I explained I didn't know what variants existed. When I said I just wanted to see what was available for my nephew, he pushed back again, saying he had too many and didn't put them out. At that point I told him I'd just take the single comic I had in hand. On my way out, I let him know I had been ready to spend a couple hundred dollars but instead left with only a $5 purchase. His attitude literally drove me out of the store. I would not recommend doing business here. There are plenty of other comic shops in Los Angeles, not to mention online options, where you don't have to deal with this kind of attitude. read more

This store is a nice LCS (local comic shop) servicing the So Cal area of Los Angeles' Valley. It's not large in store space size, but their inventory seems to fill the space nicely providing a good solid selection as well as a variety of categories from comic books to toys/figures/statues and graphic novels/trade paperbacks. The one thing lacking here as with most LCS are vintage comic book back issues, especially high end high grade key silver age super hero books. I know those are rare and scarce for stores to stock as well as expensive inventory items with typically lower profit margins 'tho. This store earned it's 4th * star by the owner's comments about how he likes to turnover inventory frequently, so that the same 'ol unsold stale dust collector's aren't stockpiling and visitors can look forward to something market fresh and new to the store. I think that's a refreshing attitude of not being complacent and turning a store into a warehouse of stuff nobody wants. With so many conventions and online options, the LCS is a dying breed, but truth be told, it's a safe haven for fans to come to have great conversations and engagement. I don't live in The Valley, but I'd most certainly take the 45 min drive over here for the right reasons such as any in-store signings with comic book creators or any opportunities to pick up bargains on sale. read more

I have been coming here for a long time. Here are some tips for potential new customers: 1. They specialize in modern age comics. If you're looking for silver and Bronze Age books, he might have some keys on consignment, but not much other than that. And speaking of selling your collection, Cat the owner will talk you out of giving your stuff away for peanuts, but instead will offer to help sell your stuff. 2. Hot books are not marked up on Wednesdays! I'm sure some of you have noticed at other shops (some down the street) and immediate markup on certain new books, with stacks placed out for your gouging pleasure. Cat does NOT do this! Start a pull or come in on Wednesday and get your copy at cover! 3. Start a pull list. Cat definitely prioritizes his regulars, but once you're in, he will always take care of you. Forgot to add a book? Send him a text. Sold out? He will find you a copy. And you get a discount. Just make sure to pick up what you order (this goes for all comic store pull lists). For those that collect variants, this is important as he will take care of you on the non-incentive stuff, regardless of eBay pricing. Build relationships with your LCS (Local Comic Stores)! I have been looking all over town for anywhere that sold Scooby Doo Apocalypse comics. Everywhere I went I was turned away by shopkeepers seeming surprised I was even asking for them. Finally I found this place and couldn't believe how friendly the owner was. Not only did he have almost all of the issues that I needed of the comic but I had about a 40 minute conversation with him and one of his good friends. Very neat and orderly store with everything alphabetized and easy to find if you know what you're looking for. They also have a decent selection of Funko's. I will definitely be back from more Scooby Doo apocalypse and just to hang out at the cool vibe at this store. Highly recommend. read more

I've been patronizing this store for about 3 years now. I initially chose it because it was close to where I used to live in North Hollywood. The store isn't aesthetic compared to Meltdown, Golden Apple or Silent Stash, but what it lacks in style, it more than makes up in substance. I'm not sure what his profit margins are, but the owner Cat somehow manages to offer a 30% discount on new comic books. The previous best discount I ever received was 21% in a comic book store that no longer exists in Orange County. I spend between $30 to $40 weekly on comic books, so the savings I get is damn good. I have since relocated to West LA, but still make the pilgrimage every Wednesday to get my discounted comic books. It's almost funny since my route to get to DJ's passes by Golden Apple, but the discount and service I receive from DJ's is more than worth the trip. It doesn't hurt that it's also beside a good Mexican restaurant called Tortas Mexico (see my other review). To help keep his costs down, Cat prefers his customers pay by cash. This way, he doesn't pay the credit card fees. He'll take credit card if you don't have cash or a check, but I happily oblige since it helps keep costs down and allows him to continue the 30% discount. Cat and his staff (including his wife who occassionally helps out) are really nice and friendly. If you wonder where some of the artists and writers go to get their comic books, this shop is one of their weekly visits. Last year, Cat even got some coverage from the fan boy industry magazine Wizard. Warning: the parking in this strip mall is atrocious, so be prepared for 'combat' parking. read more

Let me start off by saying, I haven't walked into a comic shop nor opened one in 10-15 years. That being said, I walked in and met the nicest owner. Not only is he helpful but patient as well. I may have asked the most basic questions, but he took his time with everything. I appreciate that because i was walking in feeling out of place. The store will have my business from now on! I went to this store for several years and it was like an abusive relationship. While the store discount was nice, the owner really didn't have loyalty to long-time customers. He'd put off a "what are you doing here?" type attitude when I'd come in on a day that wasn't a Wednesday. He'd tell others their opinions about comics were crap, as other reviews have pointed out. He'd also lie publicly to customers about why comics weren't coming in -- "oh, something happened with Diamond's truck" -- when really, it was just because he couldn't pay his bills. When I called him out on that on social media, I got lectured. Heaven forbid you talk back to the Comic Book King. I don't know if they still have steep discounts, but he'd give a lesser discount if you used a credit card -- even if you were spending a lot of money. One Free Comic Book Day I got the "Limit 2" routine even though I went out of my way to spend about 50 dollars on merchandise I wouldn't have normally bought, even though what I wanted would be for series I was buying on a regular basis, and I didn't want to "cheat on" my regular store by going elsewhere. Oh, and I don't know if it's changed, but the store also had a requirement that one must spend $20 to use a credit card, which I'm not sure is even legal in the state of California. There was also the matter of at least two times when he'd say "we're opening early on Wednesday for those going down to Comic-Con" -- and then you'd get there and no one was there. Again, I get that business is tough, but maybe that big discount wasn't a thing that would work if you can't keep the lights on. Maybe business would be better if you didn't question why someone comes in on an irregular day. And maybe, Cat, you should keep your opinions to yourself -- I've seen the YouTube channel with "comic talk" from this store's owner, and he's still the same. And maybe business would be better if you didn't scare away customers who would spend about $60 a week back in the day, or punish them for wanting to use a credit card to make purchases. Moving on from this place was a great choice. I've spoken to others who had done the same thing, and we're all so much happier. read more

This will be a simple review, for the simple purpose of conveying a simple message. Are you a collector who cares about the condition of his/her comics and does not desire to be berated for asking to look at a book before purchasing? If so, do not shop here, avoid at all costs. Also, avoid this shops booth at conventions and flee markets. Are you a collector who believes in fair prices and not instant markup or overcharging above eBay costs? You are? Then avoid this place. Do not care about any of this? You just want to read your books, throw them in your back pocket and peddle your bike home? Good, then avoid this place too. Avoid all of the booths that are associated with this business as well. I've shopped here multiple times, and in those multiple instances been given massive amounts of grief, eye rolling, trolling, talk down, etc over asking to see different books on the wall. I've watched the owner complain for upwards of 20 minutes about a grade he received back from cgc that wasn't a 9.8. See, he got a 9.6, which isn't half bad, but collectors desire the 9.8. So, when a collector, like myself, wants to purchase a book you have listed for $35, that's on a shelf, and wishes to see it, the last thing that should happen is eye rolling, sighing, calling that person "oh you're one of those guys", when you, yourself, are that guy. Shop anywhere else but here. Support comic shops that will gladly help you purchase their product! Be a collector, ask to see books, ask questions about condition, print run, etc. If that owner doesn't gladly help you, then leave. And never, ever, go back. read more

It was one of the best we've seen after visiting numerous comic book shops in the valley. The friendly blonde lady at the counter makes the atmosphere in the store cozier too. I shopped here from 2012 when I started collecting to 2015 when I stopped, I always went here for my new books, Cat is a great dude. 4 stars out of 5 because the store will be closed randomly lol I went there on a Tuesday at 4 and apparently they closed 2? I haven't lived in LA for a couple of years, and I don't really miss it. But there are a few things I do miss. The weather for sure. The live music scene as well. But what I miss more than anything is Cat's comic shop. And it's not just because I have to drive to another town in Texas to get my funny papers; with traffic the way it is in LA, I probably spent more time on the road driving across the congested metroplex to DJ's Universal Comics than I do driving from little Longview to littler Kilgore. What I miss is the service. Cat, the owner and operator, is extremely friendly, intelligent, funny, personable and possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of comic books. He's not the stereotypical "Comic Book Guy" you see on THE SIMPSONS who likes to exclude outsiders from the scene. He's always ingratiating to new customers and instantly makes them feel right at home. He did it for me, and I've seen him do the same for every new customer who ever wandered into his shop. If he doesn't have what you're looking for in stock, I've rarely seen an occasion in which he couldn't order it for you and have it arrive in short order. He's also a huge help in putting together comic runs. I remember when I first discovered Garth Ennis' HITMAN series; Cat put together the entire run for me. I'm not sure from where, trade secrets and all. But I do know that the next time I walked through his doors, he handed me the first five HITMAN trade paperbacks and issues 28-60, completing the run. He even had the HITMAN VERSUS LOBO one shot, just because Cat's a go-the-extra-mile kind of guy. I really miss this comic shop. I miss Cat's wife and his gorgeous and funny kids. There are tons of comic shops in LA, and several within five minutes of where I used to live. I went to DJ's Universal Comics because that's the one Cat operated. read more

I took a moment to read over what most of the other people had to say about this store. I wanted to see why it has such a great rating. To be honest it seems almost pointless to review this place since it seems like every person who put less than 5 stars has pretty much the same basic problem. But I guess that shouldn't keep me from adding my two cents. This store is pretty cool. Everything is clean. They have some trade paper back and some graphic novels. They have a lot of new comics and they are very nicely organized and displayed in a really great manner. Also I would like to mention that the lady behind the counter seemed very nice. Side Note: scale R2-D2 inside, I want it. The only thing that is missing is back-issue comics. They had some boxes under the new comic displays but EVERY box I checked had nothing older than a few years ago. (if that) I can see why a lot of people would like to come here to get their fix of new comics every week or so. I see some good qualities here but I left empty handed. read more

I have been to a half a dozen different comic places around the valley and always looking for new ones. However, the two times I have gone here were bad experiences. Not simply bad by random events but by interactions with the person that I was dealing with (same one both times). I have experienced so much better service and personality from other smaller stores in the area, First experience, the new comics didn't come on Wednesday, so I was forced to go to another store to get them, which I never experienced ever. I understand that it could have been an aberration and may have never happened before, but the guy there didn't explain that it was unusual. In fact, he never even mentioned to me that his new issues hadn't come in, but we overheard him explain it to a regular. Not a good first impression. I decided that maybe it was a fluke and the guy was having a bad day. So I decided to give it another chance the following week. Second experience, I wasn't able to use my debit card unless I spent $20 or more because of his fees. Never have I ever been forced to leave a store because I didn't buy enough. I understand bank fees are a lot for smaller retailers but a sign posted in the store would've waste neither of our time. Not to mention, this was a smaller week for me and he didn't have a very large variety of new books to purchase. He was more eager for me to purchase more and then give me a discount, which didn't make sense to me. Also, he didn't have bags for his comics but only had the boards. He was willing to let me walk out the door with nothing as opposed to letting me purchase what I initially intended to buy. So he was willing to let me leave his store with a bad taste in my mouth simply because I didn't feel the need to cover "his" fees. Not a solid business approach. I will travel back to one of my other haunts and purchase what I need and maybe something else because they treat me like a person. The guy is not friendly to new people, much of the way he is to repeat customers. Never engaged me to see what brought me in, unlike other stores in the area. I found him to be standoff-ish and disappointed as people on Yelp claim that this is the best place in the Valley, while places like PittStop and Collector's Paradise have better customer service. Yet they aren't flawless but don't treat you like they are doing you the favor. It is unfortunate that I will never come to this place again. He was not social or even willing to help me, both times, with anything or simply engage me. The first time, he felt the need to stay on his phone and talk to his kids in the back. The second time, he looked like I was bothering him. I will never recommend this place to anyone and tell them to try the other place down the street. As I recommend places on my blog and podcast, I will tell people they need to stay away from this place. It is unfortunate, but there are better places to go. read more

So, I give this place 5 stars because it is, at its core, a really good comic book shop in a little minimall. It doesn't sell clothes or art books or host bands or anything...Cat, the owner, just sells comics--and he does it well. Aside from the store's simplicity (comics to the left, toys on the backwall and right hand wall), this place has the best comic saver program I have ever heard of. If you collect comics you know what I am talking about, but if you don't it basically means that the store will hold the comics you like so you can come in whenever you want and just pick them up. Weeks can go by and you can rest assured that your books (and ones you might like) will be saved for you. If you don't want the book, don't sweat it, you don't have to pay for it. The best part? Cat gives you 30% off your books! That's a CRAZY discount--everyone else either has no discount or 20%. That's a lot of money saved (and spent, of course). So, if you like comics or are interested, check out the store. The staff is friendly and really knowledgeable and will help you reconnect with your favorite titles or recommend new ones. Very highly recommended--I live in West Hollywood and I go over the hill at least 3-4 times a month. Plus, there's a fatburger down the road so I can get my books and read them over a burger. Ummmm.... It's Okay. Kinda hidden since it's in an upstairs shopping center. It was a little hard to locate at first. Once we arrived I noticed: small. Small. SMALL! Oh goodness there isn't much floor room since the giant R2D2 taking up a lot of space. (NOT knockin' the R2D2 Star wars fans, just wish I had some room to maneuver.) He was pretty cool to check out though. The selection here can be described as: New comics central. I don't think they had a single comic that was over 2 years old. I checked... But you know know what? It's cool. People need a steady supply of new issues and this place can definitely supply it. Don't even dream that they will have serious back issues though. The staff was so nice though. Such a cute girl with a darling scarf. I wish I knew her name. She was very sweet and reminded me to get some boards (since I never remember in the first place). First of all, every single time I went in, at least 4-5 people where there or came and went and everyone of them knew Cat by name, was greeted like an old friend or family member and left happy. Ive been a customer of his since he opened, and I would be a better customer, but do not drive and the buses suck getting out to that area. If I could, Id be there every dang day. Hes always got what I need/want (uh, in terms of neew releases), and is such an awesome guy that even if I dont buy a book (or 5) Ill pick up an action figure or something, just to help him out, because he's just that good of a person. Yes parking sucks, yes, sometimes I go and there are drunk people all over cause of some bar nearby, but that does little to detract from the coolness of this store, I shop there more than the shops that are left in Burbank. Well True Believers, back in the days (about fifteen long years ago, so lots of experience) when DJ's was a twinkle in Cat's eye and I was a collector, he worked at another comic shop that shall not be named. The shop was not his yet he gave a 100% to it and treated everyone the same. By my second visit to the shop I knew I was making a life long friend and next thing I knew I was being trusted with this store to give him a day off on Sundays. I was getting to live a dream and got paid in comics but most important (play sappy music) I met Cat. Well I can not say that I collect comics the way I did when I first met the Cat Man but I must say I'm not surprised to hear the reviews about his customer service. When I do role to DJ's these days I mostly go to see what my old pal is up to. You can not call this review bias because when I do go to visit, his customers come first. I just sit back and watch him banter with them on their favorite book, make suggestions and be personal the way we were when I was a customer. Mix in that with the discount on new arrivals, the ability to track down something he may not have and the all mighty pull list where he pulls your fave titles weekly, you clearly have the best comic shop ever! WOW, first time I went to this store I was immediately welcomed by Cat. I told him the ONE comic title I wanted and he was so knowledged about it. Not only did he NOT treat me like a girl in the comic book store (girls you know how that is...the looks of "oh they're just in here for a gift for their brother/boyfriend/husband/cousin/etc"), but he didn't treat me like a first time customer either. Talked to me as if I was a regular that came in every week. Believe me, I will be a regular that comes to this store to get her comic fix. PROS: lots of selection, VERY well knowledged comic store owner, GREAT prices, friendly warm welcoming service. CONS: there really aren't any, except Cat told me he's moving (30 second drive down Ventura) and said he's losing square footage. I love this comic book store and I cant say enough nice things about Cat, his family and their adorable dog (he's at the shop sometimes). They have a great selection (comics, toys, all things nerdy etc.) , fair prices, and great customer service. Cat is very knowledgeable and is always up for sharing his thoughts and experiences with us. But what I like most about them is that they are always expressing the importance of inspiring future generations to read as well as giving back to the community at the same time. It's a shame I cant visit as often as I'd like but the shop does have an Instagram account and keeps it up to date. read more

After only two visits, the owner now knows exactly what we're looking for every time we're there and has it ready for us. I'm sure that used to be standard 50 years ago---but today I only really make that connection with cafes, book and comic book shops (and possibly the arclight/vista cinemas). I went in here today while waiting for a friend to go to Sushi Dan. The clerk/owner was super nice. He not only spent time greeting and talking to customers, he searched high and low to find a comic that I wanted. There were tons of comics, a fact that intimidated me since I haven't been to a comic store in years. I will definitely come back to this shop for my comic fix. I've known Cat since he worked at another Comic Book door down the way several years ago. When he left and opened his own place I gladly followed. Cat is without a doubt the best comic guy I've ever met. Even when he's busy as hell, he'll take time to answer questions or find something for you. And with 30% off new books every week, it's totally worth it even if you live far away like I do. I just make Wednesday my "Me" day. Comics/Sushi/Starbucks. Very small. That is the first thought that popped into my mind. I actually had a hard time finding out where DJ's was. The lack of space means a lack of items, usually, but I found that even with the renovation and cleaning being had, things were still relatively easy to see and find. I loved that this was one of the first places that I went to that actually had wacky wobbler bobbleheads. I will be coming back to see if the manager has restocked the comics and put them in the right places. read more

Cat is great. His shop has new stuff and back orders. I had some questions about some back issues and he was straight up about what he was missing and when things would be coming in next. There is nothing more that I can say that hasn't been said in all the other reviews....Universal Comics is A+ and the owner (CAT) is the coolest guy you'll meet. 1. New comics every wed? *He has them. And gives a 30% discount 2. Old back issues? *He has them. 3. Looking for something more obscure that may not be as recent. *He may not have it..but he'll get it. Hes very knowledgeable about comics so even newbies can enter the store and not be intimidated. Ive run into a few comic celebs (Jeph Loeb & Geoff Johns).
