D J's Restaurant has been a popular eatery in downtown Ludlow for years. Jim Damone (cousin of singer Vic Damone, if local legend is accurate), whom the locals called "Diamond Jim," originally owned the place... thus the "D J's" moniker. In fact, before Damone opened this Main Street restaurant, he owned a place just south of the village on Route 103 that WAS named "Diamond Jim's" and that's now called "Sam's Steakhouse."
I visited D J's for dinner tonight with three companions.
The restaurant's menu offers a variety of appetizers, and entrees consisting of seafood, steaks and chicken dishes in the $15 to mid-$20 range. The restaurant also has a good-sized "adult beverage" list. Since none of us consume alcohol these days, our beverages consisted of only water and coffee.
D J's has a small salad bar, and someone has chosen all the right components...a lettuce mixture, potato salad, cottage cheese, cole slaw and pickled beets among other popular items.
While we visited the salad bar, our server delivered a basket of obviously freshly baked hot (and I mean HOT) rolls to our table, along with a generous scoop of whipped butter.
If you're looking for some delicious barbecue ribs, try the baby backs. Smoked and then liberally slathered with a tasty barbecue sauce, these pork ribs rival any on Dinosaur B-B-Q's menu, but you don't have to cross the border into New York to enjoy them. The ribs were cooked to perfection with the meat falling off the bones. The eight ribs in my portion had a nice proportion of meat to fat, and were piping hot when our server finally delivered them after the kitchen "forgot" my order. But I only had to wait for six minutes after my dining companions received their meals...and yes, I eyeballed my watch the whole time I waited. I also had the rice pilaf, which might have been heavy on garlic for some, but was just right for me and somehow remained hot throughout the meal.
My three dining companions were all happy with their meals...chicken marsala, deep fried sea scallops, and a special request order of baked haddock which was not on the menu but which the kitchen staff apparently prepared without batting an eyelash. Two baked potatoes and a huge serving of mashed-with-the-skin-on potatoes rounded out their entrees.
Service was excellent, and our server visited our table or cleared empty plates several times. To atone for the kitchen's forgetfulness, she brought me a complimentary chocolate fudge sundae made with real chocolate hot fudge...the kind that turns hard when it comes into contact with the cold vanilla ice cream.
Nobody's perfect all the time, and I'm sure D J's is no exception (like the delay with my meal). So...I'll give the restaurant 4-1/2 stars. And we will go back there...perhaps when I get a craving for more of those delicious barbecue ribs. read more
