Took the train from Manhattan to try this place for the first time with my sis as I haven't had good pita in forever. not the pita bread btw, but a traditional Balkan dish of filling-wrapped phyllo spirals, sometimes squares. both women at the counter were super friendly and I love the atmosphere with the traditional decor! Felt like being back in a Bosnian cafe. Ordered: *2 cheese slices of pita (sirnica) *1 spinach slice (zeljanica) All 3 were barely warm which I feel like is a bare minimum for something so easily heated up, and the dough didn't taste traditional -- almost tasted like whole wheat. Filling was sparse and not well incorporated/made. Also ordered 2 cupavice, kinda like pound cake rolled in chocolate and coconut flakes. those were KILLLLER and brought me back to my neighbor making them when I was younger. The pechene paprike "salad" is not a salad- but a few roasted peppers with some crushed garlic. The Tolumbe is promising - but it's drenched in simple syrup not honey. Wow this was some of the best Balkan food I've had in NYC. For just under $15, we got one large slice of spinach and cheese burek pie and two pieces of cupavac cake. I wasn't particularly seeking out a bakery but happened to be in Astoria and heard good reviews about this spot. The bakery is a family owned business started by Bostonian refugeees. What's incredible is that the business, which started as one bakery in Astoria now has two storefronts (one in Astoria and one in bk) and a factory location in Nj, and distributes frozen bureks and other goods in all 50 states. I haven't tried their frozen items yet but if they're anything like what I tried in the store, they must be good. Since it was our first time at the store, we browsed the menu to see what to order.. Everything on the menu looked great (and affordable). The store had one woman taking orders when we came in. The store was empty but she was a little impatient when we didn't know what we wanted at first. I figured the Burke and cake were a good representative sample. We took the order to go but the store has indoor seating as well as a garden patio in the back. The burek heated up well at home. Alone it makes a hearty snack or light meal. The pastry dough is flaky and buttery and the spinach and cheese is really food, the cuosvac is delightful. The coconut flavor comes through nicely and the cake melts in your mouth because it's moist on the inside. I loved both. Can't wait to return for a different burek. read more

Such a great deal for such a big delicious Burek. I had Burek at Selo in Astoria and wanted to try more. I got this spinach one from here and it was delicious but I think I want to try the cheese one next time. The pastry was flaky and I absolutely tasted the spinach which I enjoyed. My partner for baklava, which he said was one of the best he's ever had. I just want to try their cheese Burek and other dishes to see if i could feel the butteriness of the Burek... The service was efficient and good!! It is a small restaurant with very Eastern European aesthetic to it. This is it for me!! I have been coming here 20plus years, probably recommended this place to all people i know all those years. I had mentioned about my opinions about meat burek, now they put so many onions in meat burek, now there is more onions than the meat. Last of all, i have never been charged service charge until now. Mind you i leave my tip very generously. Today i got my check. I am looking at the total, doesn't add up!! Calculated 3 times, then lastly, i saw gratuity added. Am i eating at an upscale restaurant that i don't know?!! Also, if the service fee added, you have to notify the customer, because the credit card slip has tip line as well. So so so good. Would def come back for the savory treats! We sampled the spinach, cheese, and meat slices with 3 assorted sweets. I prefer savory over sweet, so def loved the slices. The spinach was my fav. I wanted to try the potato roll but she said all the rolls would take at least 20min to bake, so we were relegated to slices they already had made. That was a bummer. The sweets were good but just not as amazing as the slices. The mini churro thing was actually not very good, tasted almost stale? The tres leches was fine, but the chocolate layer cake thing was my fav. Again though, the savory dishes are where it's at. Def give it a try, wow. They also have a backyard of you want fresh air. Flaky, flavorful, and filling...this is as good as it gets. The meat and cheese burek are also solid A options and it's worth ordering as many varieties as you can if you're not rolling solo so bring a friend and two and get in on as much goodness as you can. The last time I had Balkan food (specifically Bosnian) was 2 years ago - crazy that these types of food are so underrepresented! My friend and I came here to satisfy a specific craving - the pljeskavica, one item that we reminisced enjoying when we traveled to Dubai's Global Village. This day, we ordered a bunch of food to share, some Bosnian, some Serbian, but regardless almost all of which originated from the Balkans: the spinach burek slice, teleca supa (traditional veal soup), cevapi (full order of 10pc), pljeskavica, and desserts (tulumba, cupavac, and tre lece). The spinach burek slice is a gigantic slice for $6.50 - they gave 2 plates and I was like ??? we ordered only one slice but they mentioned they cut the slice in half! The texture is pastry-like, with the spinach filling carrying most of the flavor as they don't really add butter to the pastry. The cevapi, one of the most popular dishes, is excellent. 10 pieces of beef kabobs nicely marinated, served with traditional pepper sauce (Avjar) and onions, in a pita bread. The pljeskavica is similarly served, except it is a beef patty. Both are excellent, where the cevapi carried slightly more flavor and easier to split if you want to share, while the pljeskavica was much more juicy and easier to consume. The teleca supa (traditional veal soup) is nice but did not really stand out much compared to the cevapi and pljeskavica. In terms of desserts, the price fooled us! A dessert ranges from $2 - $4, but they are gigantic. We thought they are just tiny pieces to try but we ended up having a lot of leftovers, which is a good thing. The tulumba is a fried dough soaked in syrup, and it is a light syrup so it was not too sweet, my favorite level of sweetness. The cupavac, recommended by the waitress, is excellent too. It has a little bit of liquid soaked in, with the coconut bringing forth the flavor. You can think of it as a slightly wet lamington cake. The tre lece is a variant of tres leches cake, which I am always a fan of, and they did it quite well. Service is excellent - plates were taken out and placed accordingly, and we are never short of utensils as each dish is served with its own serving utensils / eating utensils. This is despite the fact that we opted to sit in the patio, away from the hustle and bustle inside. The only downsides I can think of are the water is water bottle and so it is not free ($2.50 each, yikes) and they tack on a 20% mandatory gratuity, but that does not make this experience any less, especially since the final bill after all the food is still under $40 per person, a rough baseline of how much a nice dine-in meal in NYC costs these days. read more

I loved this place! I came here with friends, and I'm so glad we did. It was my first time trying Serbian food; I absolutely loved it. I'll definitely stop back here again soon. We ordered tea, the spinach pie and I ordered the cabbage with meat. All of the food I had was delicious! I'm looking forward to coming back here and trying more of their entrees. Employee was so sweet and had a bright smile on his face from the moment I walked into the restaurant and the moment I left. The burek is made from scratch and only takes 25 minutes which I wouldn't mind waiting considering the vast types of flavors these guys have. Definitely one of the more standout bureks I've had in my time. I have no idea what the dessert I tried was but I actually really didn't like it. I think that's more of a ME problem and my palate just isn't suited to it. It just felt flavorless and dry to me, almost cardboardy in the ashy nuttiness of it. I don't know. I would try their other desserts though for sure. This was just a miss for me. I bought like three frozen bureks for home and there was the option for a halal beef one which really made my heart soar. It was pretty good. There was an almost cheesy taste to it and while it didn't seem intensely flavorful it was very much satisfying. The potato one was very comforting but again very delicately flavored. I could taste pepper more than anything. It wasn't mashed potatoes as I had thought but shredded. Not an issue though. Haven't tried the cheese one yet but there's no way in hell it could go wrong. I think I'll just stick to buying it fresh from the store but the frozen options are fantastic alternatives. read more

As honeymooners who went to Croatia/ the Balkan coast, this hole in the wall found a special place in our hearts! Best Burek in NYC I've yet to find! They offer HUGE slices, offering both cheese and meat; and sometimes, potato and apple. I am in love with their Sopska salad-- almost like a greek salad, but with shredded (what seems to be) sheep's cheese atop. I get it every time and never regret it. PS- they have a beautiful outdoor garden that mustn't be missed! Icing on the cake is the reasonable prices! Definitely worth a visit. read more

Been here twice (two days in a row) several months back. Bosnian food you definitely got to try out. The waitress we had was good. Only one person at the cash register. Putting pies in the box as well as running to the outside patio to provide service. It's like a two person operation here at this eatery when we came. So be patient with service. We helped wipe table and chairs with paper towels for we were sitting there after it rained. No indoor dining. Outside patio in the back was immense. Like a little oasis from the big city. The outside patio is festive with decorated Xmas lights. We stayed as long as we wanted. Couple across were having pitcher of beer. Family nearby was eating dinner. Cevapi -Delicious. Skinless Sausage with seasoning. The flatbread was thicker and chewy vs. pita bread. Had the crepes for dessert and portion enough for two. Next day went back. We ordered a burek and Hungarian Goulash to go. The outside patio was a little too smokey for us. The goulash was delicious. The burek was a tad greasy for my taste, it was filling. There's an outdoor patio through the restaurant, so more seating than you might think. We got there at 12:15PM on a Sunday, and we had the patio to ourselves. For the 6 of us, we shared the Burek Pie (spinach & cheese mix), Cevapi, and Sarma to share. This came to about $55 (15% tip included since it was over 5 people), AND we still had leftovers. Such a great deal. Burek pie ($20): It says 4 slices on the menu, but it's really 8 slices and they are still huge! We had to cancel the Beef Burek Pie after seeing the size of the first one. The spinach & cheese flavor is on the milder side, and the dough is very flaky. We got the round version (vs. flat), and it was fun eating the pie, piece by piece. Personally, I could have used with more filling/flavor, but it was still very good. Cevapi ($14): This was even better than the pie for me, and I would get this again. It says beef kebobs, but it's more like a sausage. It was so nicely seasoned, but not as rich as a sausage. It came inside a huge toasted pita bread. Sarma ($13): Stuffed cabbage (rice & meat) with mash potato. This felt like comfort food - not a lot of flavor, but not meant to be. It was nice to eat with the cevapi. I found myself in The cheese borek here was super buttery and flaky. I wish there was a little more filling to balance out the heaviness of the phyllo layers here. No phone call, no text, no notification of any kind. No apology. Just rude and dismissive. Good burek and cevapi. A slice of burek is huge, a quarter of a full pie! One slice is way too much for one person to handle since the filo dough is pretty heavy. The outside is nice and crispy while the inside is flaky. I tried all three fillings, cheese, spinach, and beef. My favorite is the cheese followed by the beef. The spinach is good too and has what I believe is ricotta cheese, but after a while it tastes too green. The cevapi comes with bread, a red pepper sauce and onions. On its own, the cevapi is just ok, but together with the sauce and onions it becomes amazing. read more

Fresh hot burek: the place is really good. We ordered cheese and meat borek and each slice came out fresh, hot and crispy. It's as if they make the phillo dough in store. My friend and I took our leftovers to go. Two hours later we snacked on it again and they tasted better. They make other food here too and it smells phenomenal: a grilled meat sandwich was another customer's choice. I kid you not the smell was teasing me to take a bite from his sandwich..... just calling my name. They also sell their borek pies frozen so can bake them at home and share with family and friends. Much appreciated. I've tried once again to place an order with Djerdan but it was immediately cancelled. I guess it was I who failed to order, pay, deliver and find among 50+ units my own order.
