They have some outdoor seating, but seems to be a lot of smokers, so be aware of that. The ambiance inside was nice, music wasn't too loud. The big screen was a little distracting, but the inside is more spacious towards the back. They gave us free bread which was warm and soft. We got so much food that we ended taking it most to go. The 2 of us got the mixed grill for 2 and the feta burek. The burek is divine, and the feta version was great. I'd be willing to try the Spinach and beef versions too. The mixed grill was mixed haha. The cevapi and the 'flat meatballs' were the best, but the sausage one was tough and my least favorite. The fries were good too. We got the mimoza cake which tasted homemade and decent but not a must get. Another review mentioned a 4% credit card fee. This wasn't disclosed on the receipt, but I paid in cash just in case.

Updating this review to reflect that I came back 3 years later and I gave this restaurant another shot. I'm very glad that I did. I must say that I was very impressed! They've completely transformed the food and even expanded the menu. Our server, Yelena, was very kind and attentive to our needs. The place was packed and we all ate very happy :) Great for groups and a night out with friends. To start off our dinner, my mom and I ordered the roasted red peppers. It came with a very delicious cream sauce and fresh warm bread on the side. The peppers were roasted perfectly and completed the sauce very well. They even offered more bread when the rest of our food came! Afterwards, we ordered the beef burek, sarma, and cevapi. All of these dishes were super and I would highly recommend. Great portions that can easily be shared with a few people. The burek filo dough was so buttery and flaky. Very generous with the meat filling. The meat was very flavorful and well-seasoned. Sarma was stuffed generously with the rice and meat. I also loved the mashed potatoes that came in the sarma. Cevapi was similar to other cevapi that I've had in the Balkans and very tender. For dessert, we reordered the Tres Leches and we saw a major improvement. The cake was topped with a nice caramel layer and soaked full of milk. And it was sweetened just right. I'll definitely be ordering this again and explore more of the menu! There's not too many quality Balkan restaurants around these days but Mimoza Restaurant is now #1 on my list. You've become my new favorite Balkan restaurant in Astoria and NYC!! Reasonably priced and I can't wait to go back.

Lamb chops n mash potatoes are 10/10 I didn't expect that the bread on the side is also very good

My sister booked the private event area in the back of the restaurant for her small wedding celebration and it was the best decision she made! Everything about the restaurant was great - the communication with the owner Mike prior to the event - the help he provided made the process so smooth. On the day of the event, they had the tables in the back set up in the way we wanted them to be for the event and we got to decorating. It's nice because there's also a small outdoor area too which is a plus. We had a mix of appetizers, mixed grills and drinks. The appetizers were so delicious (cabbage salad highly recommend!). The mixed grill was good too. Can't say much about the portion size for an individual since we had enough for our group of 35 but 100% shareable. The two people that also made the event run as smoothly as possible were Senad and Jelena- they made sure each one of the 35 guests were taken care of and all their requests were attended to! Their happy and welcoming spirits made the entire experience better. I've been back at Mimoza for a light dinner or just for drinks as well and always had a good time. I'd definitely check it out - especially if you're looking for some great balkan food :)

One of those places you tend to gatekeep... this Balkan restaurant in Astoria is easily overlooked by their humble exterior. Inside, I always order European cabbage rolls with mashed potatoes that taste like the ones a grandma made for me in Poland. Their rib eye steak is so tender I almost cried the first time I had it and their mixed grill was easily top 5 best kebab/bbq meat I've had ever.Prices are onpar with other restaurants on the block and with the amount of food you're getting with the mixed grill it's easy shared with 2.

Recommend from Jelena this dish is delicious.

The food was great . And the service was great as well thank you to Jelena. The food was delicious....

One of the best new lounges in Astoria -Mimoza is a southern European/Balkan gastropub and lounge that opened up in the late spring of 2022. I ordered the Momoza special with chicken and mushroom in a wine source, followed by coffee and tiramisu. Everything was delicious. Service was outstanding, with very helpful management and employees. Mimoza took over the old Tacostoria restaurant while keeping some of the existing features, such as the bar. They have a backspace at the rear of the lounge, perfect for summer events. At the bar, they have a large TV for sporting events. Overall, an outstanding experience. I will be back. Highly recommended!

This was my first time trying actual Romanian food, as most restaurants I have been are marketed as…read more"eastern European" with the cabbage rolls, pierogi, etc. Thus, it is hard to give an accurate star rating since I don't really have an adequate baseline of what Romanian food should be, but combining the food and the excellent service, this place deserves a 5 stars. We were a party of 7 and we walked in on a Sunday dinner, and there was no wait. There was a wedding nearby in the restaurant, so it was a bit loud, but it was a good vibe. We ordered a bunch of dishes, such as the Platou Taranesc, Salata Bouef, Pomana Porcului, Pastrama, Mititei, Sarmale, Papanasi, and Coltunasi Platou Taranesc - country plate, basically bread and cold cut, Romanian style. It was a good experience but something I would normally not go out of my way for, since I don't like cold cut. But it is worth trying since Romanian food has a lot of cured meats and such, so the variety here is apparent Salata Bouef - bouef salad. Not beef salad. It is like a potato salad with chicken and veggies. Fairly hearty despite looking like small portions Pomana Porcului - traditional style pork fried meat - does not look fried, but it is a bit cured. A bit tough, maybe that's how they prepare it, but nonetheless flavorful. Pastrama - lamb pastrami - also a bit tough but cured. I liked the flavors but definitely need to eat it like a fork and knife style, not one bite Mititei - Romanian skinless sausages - kind of like a kofta (ground beef) and I loved this meat dish the most Sarmale - stuffed cabbage roll - one of the best cabbage rolls I have tried. Manageable size for each roll, and the cabbage has just the right amount of softness and the filling is super flavorful. Would recommend this 100% Papanasi - Romanian donuts - they say 2 pieces but the pieces are huge and sweet and hearty. A great way to conclude the meal, and enough to feed 4+ people after a nice meal Coltunasi - dumplings - we got beef. These are good but did not stand out. A nice starter Service was amazing and deserving of the auto 20% gratuity. The only miss is the water refills are not as frequent but the server gave us some sides on the house and gave us amazing recommendations of what to try for food for the first time and brought out everything we needed to enjoy the meal.

I just went with it and ordered the Ukus Style Burger. I wasn't sure what to expect as the menu kept the details pretty minimal. She made it fresh right in front of me. And overall, I was pleasantly surprised. The patty was thick, and I wasn't even able to finish the burger. I did find it to be a tad greasy, but it was flavorful. I enjoyed the sauce, which I think was called ajvar, and I like the bread which was similar to pita bread. Overall, 3-ish stars.

The burek is flaky and flavorful and I usually stick to cheese or spinach, but they also have meat, cabbage, and potato slices. I brought two friends along who'd never tried Balkan cuisine and they were instantly in love with the cevapi, which was grilled to perfection and complemented perfectly with raw onions, ajvar, kajmak, and develops warm bread. We also really enjoyed the pausili, which had a really delicious smoky flavor; this was my favorite dish and one I will definitely go out of my way for on cold days. We also tried the sudzukice, which I think I actually preferred over the cevapi because I found the thin beef sausages to be a bit more moist and flavorful. Great service and food make this cash only establishment one worth coming back to!

Had dinner here recently with a friend (who was trying Romanian food for the first time!). She loved it. I had the stuffed cabbage; she had the stuffed peppers (2 HUGE peppers). We also shared a cold appetizer platter (think SPREADS: grilled eggplant spread, vegetable spread, bean spread....you get it). It all gets eaten with bread and that's the problem - same as I have at Italian or Mediterranean places - by the time the main dish comes out, I am almost stuffed! Since the weather has been super dope, we were able to sit outside which is always a nice treat. Our waitress was sweet, attentive and patient with us, she let us enjoy ourselves well past the meal. The only few things I'll comment on are: there were only 3 stuffed cabbage pieces vs what I truly thought were 4. I had only 2 at the restaurant and took the other 2 for leftovers the following day. When I went to have them, I realized the "4th one" was actually just cabbage with no meat, and it had been made to look like it was another piece (!!) on purpose or not, I don't know but that kind of possible "false advertisement" made me a little disappointed. You can clearly see what I mean from the photo, IMO. The bread also could have been a bit better, but IDK, maybe I'm a bread snob nowadays and since I have it rarely, I want to thoroughly enjoy it. They also add the tip automatically on your bill, while listing the breakdown of % tip for ease / convenience at the bottom for you (again - !!!) so while the tip was deserved and I ALWAYS do so, the automatic add-on still just grids my gears. STILL LOVE YOU, ROMANIAN GARDEN. Just give me my 4 stuffed cabbage pieces next time, darn it!

We received the menu from a woman (who was handling everything in the dining room). For 3 courses for $35 (though it was 4 courses here), it's a good deal. The menu said that all entrees include a side though we were advised that was wrong and the dessert was crepe with jam or nutella (we weren't given an option). We ordered: Appetizer: Eggplant Spread and Meatballs - go with the eggplant spread ('m normally don't eat eggplant and it was delicious). We both ordered the chicken soup. It had carrots and chicken. Entree: Stuffed Pepper and Pork Stew. The stuffed pepper was great. I engender the pork stew had more flavor when I ate it in Romanian (you decide). Dessert: it was crepe with jam. If you get a curve, go try it.

I went to this restaurant with a group a good while back, as can be seen from Andie's old review…read more This is one of two Czech restaurants in the city, along with Bohemian Spirit, located in the Bohemian National Hall, and the food here reminded me much more closely of what I had in the Czech Republic, or rather, now, Czechia. The inside looks and feels like a tavern, and there was the typical no-nonsense staff you find in Central and Southern European restaurants. They have a very reasonably priced beer menu, especially on tap, and I got a BrouCzech Dark for $7 for half a liter, with a 1/3 liter option for $5, with the other tap options being the pilsners Czechvar and the more standard Urquel. They gave us some free bread to start, before our very heavy shared meal. The first thing to arrive was the Boiled Perogies, consisting of 12 pieces for $25, topped with bacon and sour cream. I usually slightly prefer the fried version, but these were very tasty. It wasn't super doughy compared to most spots, and it had a nice filling. As per usual, the dumplings, which were a bit rich, were balanced by the sour cream. In short, I preferred these over the boiled pierogi from Karczma, among other spots. While we were eating, another smaller plate arrived, the Broiled Klobasa for $13, served with horseradish sauce. I am very particular about sausage quality, as my old hometown has a butcher shop that makes 25/30 homemade products, including many sausages, and this was very tasty. The klobasa had a good smoky flavor and had a good snap. The horseradish, mustard, and pickles on the side helped with the richness. I would recommend this also. For most people, their favorite dish of the evening was the Halusky for $27, or potatoes spaetzle with sheep cheese, topped with bacon. As per the other dishes, the portion size was very generous. The spaetzle had a good texture, and the dish was quite rich, creamy, and salty from the cheese and bacon. This version was comparable, if not better than, the excellent versions at the various Eastern European spots in Manhattan, and I would recommend this as well. Our least favorite dish by a lot was the Pork Schnitzel for $28, made with a potato pancake batter and topped with cheese. This came with a salad and a side item of our choice. The salad was very plain but fresh, with some potatoes and pickled vegetables on the side. The schnitzel lacked a bit of flavor and salt compared to the other dishes. This was the only miss of the evening, but it was still decent as the chicken had a nice breading. Next time, I would probably try their Svíčková, or in other words, beef and cream sauce, to compare it to Spirit and other dishes, such as the roast duck, if it's hopefully available as one of the specials. This was an above-average spot serving a less common cuisine, and I would recommend it.

First of all, we were seated by the staircase leading to the bathroom in the basement. Every time someone went down the stairs, there was a terrible smell that came up through the dining room. When I finally use the dirty bathroom, I realized that the urinals don't have a flusher at all, hence the horrible stench. This is not acceptable. We wanted to move at first. However, there were many tables still not cleaned nearby, with lots of crumbs on the floor, which forced us to stay put. As for service, the female server we had said that she couldn't give any recommendations because she's only tried one piece of cake during her six months working there. At the same time, she seemed distant and occupied. I asked for help from a different waiter in the end because she wasn't paying attention. On the other hand, I finally found a combination of items I like at this cafe. That would be their Pistachio Paris Brest with a cup of cappuccino. Toffee cake was a bit sweet, though not bad. Regardless, nothing is good enough for me to come back regularly.
