The most trusted mechanic I have ever had. This review is long overdue as we have had multiple cars serviced my Dave at DJ Auto. This particular occurrence was by happenstance or divine intervention (you decide) because I didn't even know something was wrong with my car. Dave happened to pass by me outside a lovely eating establishment in Provo while my car was still running and I was standing by it. He kindly mentioned that he noticed my valves needed loosening. Obviously I knew exactly what he meant (no, I knew nothing of what he meant!) but he offered to look at my car for free at his shop just down the street. After taking advantage of the free service, my car indeed needed a fix including the timing belt that was on it's last string. I feel like it was a blessing in disguise that he stopped me that day or the fix my car needed could've been much worse. Long story short, he took the car for 3 days, fixed all my issues, charged me a fair price, and even lent me a loaner car for free while it was in the shop. I've always feel like I am treated well here and I trust the knowledge of the mechanics. read more

They quoted me $700+ just for my back break pads and back rotors. Absolutely a scam. He'll chat your ear off like no other which is fine but math wise $700 for 2 break pads and 2 rotors + labor and tax is ridiculous. I told them that i'd like to go somewhere else to get the done for cheaper and he gave me such an attitude about it saying stuff like "well we did shake on it but if you want to back out that's up to you" and I said yeah I'd like to take it somewhere else he said "well you're out of here then, get his car outa here" read more

I was not happy with the 40 minute opinion that was shared about the car I brought in to be looked at. The car didn't meet Dave's standard of cars so he let me know it and would not provide the service requested on the car. It was frustrating to ask for help and then be told he wouldn't do it after 40 minutes of him talking about self driving cars and the future of cars in general. These guys are thief's. My son's car broke down, 2009 Mustang, they told me it needed a new air condenser, radiator, and head gasket and it would be $7,673.60. My son took the car over to Sky Ford, the dealership, which I would never do, but I am in Arizona and my son is in Utah. The dealership, replaced the air condenser and radiator for $2,080 and the dealership confirmed that there was no head gasket leak. Car runs perfect! The cherry on top, when I told them I would not put that kind of money into the car they made me an offer to purchase it. Said they would waive the $160 diagnostic fee and give me $200. I was out of town and this shop was close by when my car broke down. I was wary when they told me that there was a $150 diagnostic fee. I should have turned around at this point, but we were in need and wanted to figure out what was wrong so I agreed. The only place the charges diagnostic fees are dealerships and they do it because most people go to different mechanics to save money. Dealerships also will eat the diagnostic fee if you have them do the work. That's not how these guys operate. You will pay the diagnostic fee regardless. I didn't get the answers I was looking for, just a lot of might be's. Of course they were telling me it was more than likely the most expensive "might be". I haven't worked on cars in a while, but I'm not an idiot when it comes to mechanical stuff. I wasn't getting a good vibe from these guys. Can I say that they are crooks? This is the best Auto repair shop I have found in the area. I love their 1-10 scoring on how urgently you need something fixed. One thing I discovered recently is the free check if you are looking to buy a used car. Saved us from a huge mistake. Car looked nice. But when they looked at it, it had basically been totaled and rebuilt but it still had a "clean" title. I recently brought in my classic mustang to get serviced. While they were servicing it, he noticed that a prior brake job had left the brake line too close to the exhaust. He fixed that without asking and without any additional charge. read more

DO NOT COME HERE! In all my years of yelping I have yet to give out a 1 star review to any place- I guess there's a first time for everything. For context, I have a pretty reliable car in a 2011 Infiniti G37x- never broken down before or had any major issues. My car broke down and I towed it to DJ Auto- they claimed it was an issue with the fuel pump and "fixed it". I wish that it ended there. I went on vacation, came back and drove it twice since then, and it broke down AGAIN in the middle of the road. I was super upset, but decided to get it towed right back to them bc they claimed to fix it the first time and wanted them to actually fix the problem. They claimed they either misdiagnosed it or didn't do a good job fixing the right thing. They ended up doing that for free, but did charge me to tighten some bolts dealing with the brakes bc I asked them to. Okay, so end of story right? NOPE, fast forward a few weeks later (and literally driving it maybe 3 times) and it breaks down AGAIN and I need to get it towed for a seemingly similar issue. Turns out the part that reads the fuel level failed. In all of the previous diagnostics and work they did, how could they miss this? Especially after claiming to have done full diagnostic tests and fixing this 2 times before this! Well at least they would fix it for free right? NOPE! Owner and worker both said that was unreasonable and that it wouldn't work for their profit margins. Beware they will argue everything with you on the phone. I have had poor experiences at restaurants, mechanics, and other places I've found on yelp, but I can genuinely say I have never had such a bad experience than at this place. I had to get it TOWED to them 3 times to fix similar problems. If you want to have confidence in your car and its repairs and diagnostic tests, don't come here- unless of course you want to have your car breakdown on the freeway or in the middle of traffic at a red light. Have had 0 car breakdowns before this, and now I've had to get my car towed to them 3 times in 3 months. Will never be coming here again and will definitely be letting people I know to stay away from this place. read more

Had a recent problem with my Suburban going from running perfectly to intermittently not starting at all on the next attempt. I bought a new battery and tightened cables and it still wouldn't start. Had the vehicle towed to DJ Auto on Thursday, Sept 8, 2022 and they quoted $149 to diagnose the problem. They messaged Monday that they couldn't duplicate the problem as the car was starting every time and they needed more info. They wouldn't let me speak to a technician, so I told their receptionist to have them check the key cylinder or switch; also that the starter might be suspect. Before towing the vehicle I had checked the starter, tapping it with a hammer, but it did nothing to help. They gave me a diagnosis saying that the battery terminal connections had been loose (wrong, they were solid when I installed the new battery), and that the starter solenoid was loose and that the connections were causing the intermittent starting problem. They quoted $627.88 to replace the starter. I declined the work and picked up the Suburban. Upon getting it home I removed the new battery and put the old one in. The battery side post terminal bolts had been stripped by them and the sparks honked the horn multiple times as I removed the side post cables. This was not the case when I gave them the vehicle. I replaced the battery side-post terminals for $6 a pair from O'Reilly's auto parts. I then examined the starter through the wheel well. It moved when I touched it with my fingers, yet the mount bolts holding it in place were very tight. How did this happen? Before having the vehicle towed to their shop, I had tapped the starter with a hammer and it was rock solid and unmovable. I now removed the starter and found the solenoid was solid and the connections strong and clean. I put the starter back in, and the vehicle has been running perfectly ever since. I am very disappointed in DJ Auto. They misdiagnosed the starter and missed the fact that the battery side post terminal bolts were the problem -- $6 fix instead of $600. BTW, starters for this go from $99 to $250 and are an easy remove and replace. So glad I declined their repair and looked at it myself. If you're in need of car work and have a tough problem to diagnose, you might want to look elsewhere (like at Big O with great reviews). I spent $234 taking my vehicle to DJ Auto for a $6 repair ($85 towing and $149 for their diagnosis), and won't be using their services ever again. Dennis read more

Unless you want someone to fail at properly diagnosing your car (after spending days and money spent solely on diagnostics) and fiddles with it without your permission and then refuses to give your money back because they "did something" to try fix it. Again, without permission. Also worthy to note the "part they fixed" never showed up on the paperwork they gave me. Even months later. The diagnostic and the fix they claimed is not even there. They just lied in order to not give back my money. Also, why fixed that part and not the other minor issue they actually did state in the report? When I went to ask for my refund I was bullied, and the owner/manager used intimidation tactics and was VERY condescending and mocking to me. Remember this attitude was to a PAYING customer who was still deciding whether or not to continue future business here. And I didn't raised my voice or came in screaming with my concerns. I am so glad I brought a witness. This makes me wonder how he treats his employees and other associates. Please if you are considering getting a job here, run far away from this place. I wished the receptionist owned this company instead - she actually listened to my concerns and tried to meet me halfway until this man showed up. That man was such condescending, arrogant man. Go to Dave and Luis instead! They own Paylower in Provo (get in contact with them before they move to a bigger place!). These guys correctly diagnosed my car within 5 minutes over the phone. That is right - they weren't even looking at my car. They were faster and more accurate than the few days and money spent at DJ Auto. They are the best and they don't charge you for "diagnostic fees" and will call you before they touch your car. Also it was nice that they gave me real numbers over the phone. The man at DJ auto went on and on about how great he was that he was not charging me more for the part he supposedly fixed, that he saved me thousands of dollars. And I asked Luis how much that part will cost to replace and he said $37. He also said he had no idea why they bothered to replace that part, because it had nothing to do with the problem my car was having. I will never go to a Dj Auto again! They will also push you to do a review before you had the chance to really see if they fixed your car. I was referred to dj auto by one of my closest friends; "I always go to dj auto" he told me, and I decided to give them a shot, it started with an oil change but turned into a very long lasting relationship. I've been going to dj auto for all my vehicle maintenance and repair needs for a bit more than two years now. They are up front and honest, and they care about their relationships with the customer. In the old days I would get anxious about taking my car in to a mechanic to be taken care of, but these guys are honest and they don't make you feel like an idiot, which I've also dealt with in the past. They aren't trying to make money over keeping a customer. I keep going back to them because they care about me and about my car. It's real simple, when I walk in, the staff is familiar to me and I am familiar to them, we get along, they let me know if any additional repairs need to be made, they've kept my car running great for two years plus, and they repaired my vehicle after it was rear-ended in an accident. DJ Auto is the sort of "mechanic" I have despised for decades! The sort that would take advantage of a solo female. My friend stopped into DJ Auto Thursday MORNING with an over heating H2. Long story short, DJ Auto told her it was her water pump and would be $500. She was stuck ALL DAY! WHO needs "diagnostics" for a WATER PUMP!? Much less TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY DOLLARS of "diagnostics"!? FOR A WATER PUMP!? What shop does NOT apply diagnostics to a repair!? DJ auto, that's who! The web estimates water pump replacement on an H2 at $400 to $600. The TWO other MECHANICS we consulted (while DJ worked) BOTH said DJ was nearly DOUBLE the normal price for the job!!!! The mechanic took it for a test drive and then just a couple of minutes after returning came to get me and show me a big problem that he found. The engine was full of sludge. I do believe there are two types of people who give reviews, ones who know about cars and ones who don't. The ones who don't and go to this place are too naïve to know they're getting ripped off. They recommended $1400 worth of work on my daughters car and when I took it to another garage they were amazed at the recommendations this place made as most of the work didn't even need to be done. I had to get my car fixed about a month ago and only just learned the I got absolutely ripped off. I was going through the loss of a family member that week so I just paid what was put in front of me because I hardly had the mental energy to get through work - though I did think it was pretty high (I was charged nearly $140 to just diagnose that my battery needed replacing + $220 for the new battery). So thanks, DJ Auto, for taking advantage of me while I was too deep in grief to think about the pricing - nice to know horrible people are still willing to screw good people over. I really hate writing negative reviews and try to applaud companies as much as possible. However, in this case my experience was nothingbut horrible and would not recommend this shop to ANYONE! I came in from out of state and my check engine light came on. I called around the area and finally find this shop, where he claimed they had all the BMW equipment and machinery to property diagnose and fix my car. After having them look over my car for some time they determined what was "wrong". Knowing a thing or two about cars I asked how they found the issue and what tests where done to confirm their findings. He assured me with 100% certainty that he found the issue. $1,500 and a day later my car was ready for pickup. Immediately I was concerned as he didn't seem so sure that would fix my issue, already claiming that there would need to be more done if this doesn't fix it. I didn't get 20 miles before the light came back on but by this time I was so sick of dealing with this shop I took it to a shop in SLC. This shop which actually had the proper BMW equipment found my issue in a matter of 5 minutes...with such speed and accuracy that it's embarrassing that this shop didn't find it in the first place. DJs shop did get it right in that it was vacuum leak, but failed to notice the rattle coming from my exhaust flap. The issue? The vacuum hose that closes the exhaust flap at idle had rubbed itself off. The second shop I took it too refused to even charge me as it was such as easy fix! Bottom line: This shop will throw things at you to fix that don't need to be done in order to make more money. They DO NOT have the proper import equipment and the second shop had to fix the programming in the computer that they screwed up. It's hard enough to find honest people, yet alone honest mechanics, this shop has neither. I have no doubt that they could fix very simply and straight forward issues, but if you need anything diagnosed take it to a shop with the proper equipment. Regardless, with $110 being their hourly rate you may end up paying less at a more qualified shop. read more

So expensive! $68 just for an oil change, I don't think so. I took my car there and they prescribed half my problems to me having the wrong battery (too small). So I look things up online and everything I can find says I have the right battery. Then I take it in to another place and they tell me I have the right one. The short of the long. Daughter brought in her car because the gauge showed it was getting hot. They diagnosed it as a bad radiator hose that had blown the head gasket and the piston rings. The car has over 220k on it so it seemed logical. They were kind and offered to try and sell it to someone who might want to put an engine in it for us. We thought that was very nice of them. In the mean time we brought another car down to our daughter. She took it in for an oil change. Surprise, surprise, it had a radiator leak and needed to be replaced. This threw up flags. We had our daughter get a second opinion on the radiator from another shop. Big shock when we were told no leak, NOTHING. They didn't even charge us because there was nothing. Decided to get a second opinion on the first car. Guess what, once the radiator hose was replaced, it worked great. In fact, the other shop had to replace the hose before doing any testing at all. The one thing that echo's in my mind was how many times we were told that many of the shop workers wanted a car as nice and clean as ours was. These guys are the very definition of ripoff artists. They do the small things that make it look broken, then charge you an arm and a leg to fix it. In all of my life I have never experienced a worse repair shop. STAY AWAY. read more

This place is one of the biggest rip-offs of all time. I don't want to go in to too many details but these guys way over quoted me on a job. They also said it was going to take way longer than it actually took. I ended up going somewhere else to get the job done for almost a grand cheaper. And it took a lot less time. WATCH OUT! These guys are scam artists! I'll try to make a long story short. I'm visiting from California. When I got here, the AC in my honda wouldn't turn on. I figured I was low on refrigerant and bought some at AutoZone. After charging the system the AC compressor would turn on and off about every second if I was driving. So I called these guys. Upon arrival I explained that I had charged the system with one of those cans and David immediately said that I was probably screwed because "most of those things have a sealant in them that when they come in contact with oxygen, turns solid". So at a minimum they were going to have to flush the system of all the coolant and replace various valves and other components BECAUSE, upon flushing out the system, it would be exposed to oxygen and everything would turn solid, gumming up the system and ruining it forever. Then, Guy #2 comes in with a rubber glove that had a little bit of oil and a spec of dust that he said was a chunk of metal. This meant that my compressor was shot and had to be replaced, along with everything else in the system EXCEPT for a few hoses. Freaking fantastic. Then they broke the news to me that it was going to cost in the neighborhood of 3 GRAND. I'm on vacation. I don't have 3 grand to spend. I thanked him kindly for looking at it (in his defense he didn't charge me anything...) and left. After I left I drove straight to AutoZone to see if the refrigerant recharge canister I got had any sealant in it. To my dismay NONE OF THEM DO. Not a single one advertises any kind of sealant. So I asked the attendant if I had missed anything. Nope. Then I drove home, pulled off the low pressure cap on the A/C system and released a bunch of pressure. Fortunately the recharge canister comes with a handy little pressure gauge so I could make sure I didn't drain it too low. After a little trial and error, my A/C works great. David, you're a smooth talking lying piece of trash. I have learned to do and will continue to do ALL the work on my car by myself because of people like you. Oh, and FYI, when I drained the oil/ refrigerant from the system, I drained it into a clean rag. Not so much as a single spec of dust. No metal shavings, just oil and refrigerant. Great customer service! After reading a positive review on Yelp, I took my car in for an oil change. David took time to check the car thoroughly and gave me a lot of helpful information that I didn't know, without giving me any pressure to buy additional services from them. He also took time to tell me about the importance of buying manufacture specific parts as they would help the car last longer. I never had any mechanic take time to share information that would help my car last longer and felt that they offered great customer service. I will be coming back here definitely. read more

I have been going to Dave's shop for close to 9 years now. I have moved all over Utah during those years and never found a better mechanic, so I keep coming back despite my hour drive from Park City. Dave and his guys are knowledgeable, skilled and, most importantly, always fair and honest. I have brought several older cars in to the shop and they always prioritize the most important repairs and have never pushed the less necessary ones to save me money in every way possible. When my goal (as embarrassing as it sounds) was simply to keep my older cars running, they made sure that happened at as little cost to me as possible. They also did a comprehensive review, for free, of my new car before I bought it to make sure I was getting a good one. I started going to Dave's shop 11 years ago when I was in college, I didn't have much money and needed a mechanic I could trust. He always took the time to walk me through the repair and the time to walk through the results after the repair was completed. Over time he gained my trust and confidence and for me Dave has proven over the years to be the best most trustworthy mechanic I've been able to find ever.... Whenever I'm in provo I try and bring my car so they can do the work. He's worked on 10 cars for me over the years included a food truck and recently found a transmission leak that 2 transmission shops in UTAH we're emphatic "didn't exist" - after he found it on inspection two shops in CA confirmed it was there and he's probably saved me 500 to 1000 on the purchase of this new car.
