We ran into some friends that we knew while we lived in the south, naturally the topic of southern food came up and they highly recommended this place. We hadn't had southern food since leaving the main land a year prior so we quickly drove over. Getting here is kind of a pain, once you get off kam highway this spot is located near an old car dealer ship Parking: There was ample parking in the lot in front of the restaurant and behind it as well. Ambiance & Seating: Well by golly gee, if I dont say m'self this place made me feel like I was back in the good ol'south as soon as I walked up. Lots of men in cowboy boots/hats and girls in flannel too just to top it off. Right off the bat my husband and I noticed we were the only brown people in the joint, but thats never scared us away from some good grub. The seating inside seemed a bit stuffy so we were seated outside under some umbrellas on a picnic table. Once we got served our food, we forgot we were in Hawaii! Service: The service was good, our waitress really kept up with us and was very friendly the whole night. What we ordered As soon as we sat down you're given a nice bowl of popcorn to munch on while you browse their menu. We started with a sweet tea-- which was enormous, twice the size of my hand and REAL southern sweet tea if you ask me! & my husband got a screamin mai tai which was a whopping 34 oz and gorgeous! It was cheap & tasted great too! Our appetizer was Fire roasted crab and artichoke dip which was served with "dixie toast" which was a play on a normal french baguette. This was probably my favorite dish of the night, it was creamy, fresh and delicious. I'm all about texture and this had it for me! I ordered: 3 meats, cuz i'm a boss. I got The pulled pork, the beef brisket and the tri tip au jus. For ordering three meats I expected a souther sized portion and I was sad to see, it was far from that. They were served on trays and we were given towels in case we needed to clean up our mess, but we didn't need them! Each was probably less than half a cup of meat....which was enough to feed me when I was 5. The brisket was probably my favorite of the three, the pork was forgettable and the tri tip was dry. They do give you an entire basket of sauces to have with your meat but my firm belief is that meats should be able to stand on their own without any help. My sides were macaroni salad and cornbread casserole. The cornbread casserole was delish and I would def. recommend getting it as a side if you like sweet and savory at the same time! My husband ordered the dixie ribs and was also sad at his small portion. He was expecting fall off the bone ribs but was instead given tough ribs that he did use a knife for and also meat that tasted like it was just coated in bbq sauce. He said if it wasn't for that giant mai tai, he wouldn't have even finished his food. All in all, this place was far from the southern gem I was hoping it would be. If you're from the south like we are, this is far from yo granmama's cookin. It was nice that we finally got to try it out but we don't think we'll go back. read more

I'm definitely a huge fan of Dixie Grill. There's several reasons. As an east coast native, particularly from the northern mid-atlantic region, I'm quite picky about my seafood. I don't need fancy schmancy seafood. Don't get me wrong, I like the fancy stuff, but I love the downhome messy stuff! I'm going to put the negative here first, because I want it to be told, but not the focus. The last 3 times I've been, the french fries have been warm at best. Halfway through eating and they are cold. They should be hot when they're served. The first time they brought me another plate, still warm. The last 2 times I went, I didn't bother to say anything because I feel like maybe it's status quo. Whatevs. Here are reasons why I love it. 1 - Hush puppies. To find them so far from the east coast is fantastic. Throw in jalapenos to boot! Deeeelish! 2 - Fried Catfish, the Po Boy specifically. The catfish is fried in the appropriate blend of cornmeal and seasonings. Catfish should NEVER be fried any other way. And it has an amount proportionate to the filets. Yes, it really does make a difference. Trust! 3 - Crabs. Need I say more? No, really. That pretty much speaks for itself. I grew up eating crabs from the Chesapeake Bay. I know and love crabs! What you'll find at Dixie gets my approval! 4 - No frills ambiance. It's divey and welcoming and comfortable. It's totally the vibe of crab houses you'll find on the eastern shore or BBQ joints of the south. Those who know, will understand what I'm talking about. 5 - Service has always be on point. We usually sit at the bar, and I think her name is Brandy, (that could be way off) is usually who waits on us. Although the last 2 times we've been there she has been out. I think she recently had a baby. Anyhoo, all of the people who have served us have been excellent. We even went in one night right before closing (only because we had been on a mission, and it ultimately led us to Dixie because we had run out of options). They welcomed us and treated us as if we were there right at opening. We apologized for coming in so late and making our server stay while the other servers were packing it up. She acted it like it was no big deal and took care of us. So if you're still reading my rambling, thanks. I love Dixie Grill and we'll definitely keep going. Whaaa?? Crab roll? Where'd that come from? New? Really? Alright! I like to stop at Dixie Grill whenever I have a hunger for some BBQ that is not Korean BBQ. One of the few (non-Korean) BBQ joints on the island, they do a pretty good job on their core: Ribs, Brisket, Pull pork. Their house barbecue sauces are good and are pretty true to their regional roots. I like the South Carolina sauce, sweet but with a little bite. Their side dishes would put them out of business in any region with good barbecue. They give you a couple tablespoons of coleslaw and/or baked beans, which are good but not good enough to justify the small portions. The hush puppies are ALWAYS so dry that you'll be coughing out sawdust! Okay, they probably use cornmeal but you won't be able to tell the difference. Service has always been good. I sat at the bar for a quick lunch today and the bartender (Dave) made an excellent suggestion to kick my Crab Roll up a notch and make it a Crab Roll BLT. Spot on! Real crab, no imitation, well seasoned, and the roll was buttered and toasted the way a crab roll requires. I am so full that I need a nap! Came here last night after going to Kaiser Moanalua and we never really get out this way so we decided to give this hopping-looking place a try. I remember when there used to be a Dixie Grill on Ward and liking it. Well, we ordered the full rack baby back ribs. Not exactly falling off the bone. Just ok. The sauce selections were good though. I liked the fact that the server told us they had some mixed reviews on the mac n cheese since they had changed their recipe - so we stayed away from that and ordered the baked beaks (ok) and collard greens (ok). Loved the BBQ chicken sandwich! I think there was a full pound of bacon on the BLT. Service took a long time, but in their defense, the place was packed. People were waiting outside to get in. So me and my husband went to this place last Sunday, November 22. The food was OK service was OK. So, me and my husband decided to order an extra rice for both of us but then when we eat the rice it was icy cold, I even stick my finger in the middle of the rice to see if it's just outside cold but it's cold inside also. So we called our server and told her about it and she told us she's going to talk to the people in the back, so she came back outside but she didn't tell us nothing about what happened or why the rice is really cold. We called our server to ask what happened and she told me and my husband that the people in the kitchen didn't say anything when she asked them. So after we eat we asked for our bill and we saw our bill that they charge us the two extra rice which is it's $2.50 Per scoop. So we called our server and asked her if do we really still need to pay the rice which is we didn't eat it and it's icy cold, so she told us she's going to talk to the manager in the back, then she came back outside and told us that the manager told her that she cannot remove the extra rice because we touch it already. Of course we Touch the freaking rice because that's how we found out it's cold. Who wants to eat a freaking icy cold rice. I asked the server what's the managers name and she said his name is Jeff. The manager has no consideration of what his customer feels. I will never go back to this place again. read more

I may be writing this review with predetermined prejudices since I am from the south but here we go. The popcorn that you get when you first sit down is original and a welcoming jester. THEY HAVE ACTUAL SWEET TEA. Calamari is actually pretty good but it's been fried to an unrecognizable extent so do with that as you will. Meatloaf grill cheese was just what one would expect and ribs are average. Macaroni and cheese was a step above boxed kraft macaroni and mashed potatoes weren't as firm as I like them but not bad at all. I work right next door to this place and have had food from here fairly often, so this is not a one shot review where maybe the server is having a bad day or the cooks might be dealing with being short staffed. This review is based over a decent span of time, and over that span of time Dixie Grill has proven to me to be a model of how restaurants should be. And I'm not saying this because I'm friends with the guys next door. The only other time anyone from next door might see me (outside from ordering and picking up my food) is when im darting from my hot car into my air conditioned workplace, so there is no bias in this review. I'm as local boy as it comes, especially when it comes to my taste buds, so to eat at a place where rice isn't an automatic side dish I'm usually leary. But here the food is so good I don't mind not having rice or mac salad with my lunch. My favorite is their Cuban sandwich, although really anything on their menu is pretty good to really good. Also don't forget to add a Sweet tea to whatever dish you order. Its a great fit to any and all thier entrees and appetizers. The service here is awesome as well. They're always quick and pleasant. Service with a smile all the time and never have I had any type of issues with a mixed up order or with the quality of the meal for as long as I've worked next to this place. Prices are pretty reasonable too. Dixie is a great place to switch it up on your palette while getting treated with southern hospitality in the middle of the pacific. Everyone should try this place. When: Thursday evening, 9PM Group size: 2 Total bill: $38 (not including tip) One word to describe my experience: "Saucy" A friend and I decided to check this place out after listening to an open-mic concert at the bar called "4play" upstairs (no, it's not a strip club, as many people assume from the name). Since we both work in restaurants, we're the type to be considerate and not want to walk in 5 minutes (or even half an hour) before closing time. We know what that's like. So as we're looking around for the hours, the bartender and manager said "we're open for a lot longer, come right on in!" with enthusiastic voices. Without any more hesitation, they urged us to take a seat anywhere in the house. Greeted fairly quickly and given complimentary buttered popcorn. Average quality, but its complimentary and I don't expect it to be amazing. We ordered two of their "famous" sweet teas. In my opinion...it was nothing special. It comes in a huge glass though which makes it aesthetically appealing and makes you feel like you are getting your $4.50 per glass worth. What we ate: ~ Crab and artichoke dip: yummy!!! comes out warm and has a lot of flavor. Great with the toasted bread they give you. Two thumbs up! ~ Brisket sandwich: Soooo tender. On a kaiser roll; this was absolutely great ~ Pulled pork sandwich: very tender meat, but not as tender as the brisket. Also on a kaiser roll. Both sandwiches came with thin crispy fries, some sliced pickles, and sliced onions. They also give you a box with 6 different BBQ sauces to use on your sandwiches/meat. Our favorite was the Kansas BBQ sauce because it was sweet and very mild tasting. The others ranged from spicy to smoky, but you'll just have to go here and try them for yourselves. I am tempted to give this place five stars for simply being one of the few popular places that serve southern barbecue on the island... but I just can't do it. Parking out front at first seems a little slim, especially during busy lunch and dinner hours, but make sure you check out 'round back before finding another place to eat. We got there before the lunch rush and was able to find our own seat. Service was prompt, quick with the free popcorn, and served with a smile. Now, about the food. I have lived and traveled in the south for a few years and got to experience some good, solid southern barbecue, so I know I can write this review with some measure of confidence. Let's just say that eating brisket and barbecue pork here is a lot like eating sushi in the middle of Dallas, TX (which I also have done) - it's overpriced and not quite as good as "back home." There was too much fat for my taste, along with a good measure of charred meat. The cole slaw was fine, but the beans tasted as though it had too much mustard. Some of the other highlights, though, included a diverse selection of barbecue sauce at your table - arranged by region of the south - and the giant, refillable mug of sweet tea! Not bad. I took two-three bites and pushed it away. b. Smoked Meatloaf, Collard greens and cheese grits: Taste like they blended ground meat with stove top. The green did not taste like they washed them and the grits were kinda hard. However, it did have a cream taste, but nothing to rave about. c. Tri TIp au jus (like sliced roast), macaroni and cheese, baked beans: To say the meat was suppose to be smoked it wasn't and it taste horrible. There was no Au jus. It was dry. Been here once before over a year ago and had a burger, which was quite good actually. My friend is deploying and from North Carolina, so I suggested we go here last night because I've heard good things about their southern food. The four of us ordered two appetizers to start, the Mac n cheese balls and the calamari, then separate entrees. By the time I got home, my roommate mentioned that she felt like she was coming down with the flu. I woke up this morning around 6ish having to run to the bathroom. I tried laying down a few times but I kept having to go. Both my roommate and I had the cold sweats, chills, and diarrhea, as well as loss of appetite, basically food poisoning. I'm currently still in bed not feeling up to par. The other two boys that were with us said they had diarrhea as well today. I give this place 4 stars mainly due to their consistency and service. I've been coming to this place since 2006 when I was first stationed on Pearl Harbor. We had most of our reenlistment dinners, hail and farewells, and many nights of just hanging out and drinking. I recently moved back from San Diego and this was the first place I wanted to eat at because I knew the Screaming Mai Tai wouldn't change. Although most of the servers I knew are gone now, the people here are still friendly and I ended up meeting some new faces. The menu changed only slightly but my peel-and-eat shrimp and fried okra are still there and still delicious! Also, I love that they now play some better music (CCR, Rolling Stones, 80's rock, etc.) It's very fitting for the Dixie Grill vibe and I will be happy to come back at least once or twice a month. Thanks for not changing downstairs but what is this Whiskey Dix upstairs? I use to live Dixie Grill when they opened on Ward Ave in Honolulu. Fun, service wad top notch and atmosphere was fun!!! Today the Food was great but the service wasn't that great. Waitress didn't even come back for 30 minutes to see if we needed anything. Like maybe there special offer of the 6 bbq sauce selection or hot sauces and totally forgot my soda and coke slaw and when I reminded her she said it was coming. It never showed up. I asked to cancel it since it never showed up and she didn't even apologize. More like I thought you didn't want it cause it was no refills? Every time I'm on this side of the island I always make it a plan to stop at Dixie grill. I only came a couple of times to make it to their happy hour for some oysters but I always get my crab with a side of grits and some frickles. Dixie's has the best fried pickles I've tasted on the island. It's a must you get these when you're here! Wash all of it down with there screaming mai tai and add your shots of 151 for a couple bucks more. I love that you get u limited free popcorn while you wait for your meal. I love all there hot sauce for your bbq meats. There's even kids menu and a little sandy children's play area if you're bringing your kids. read more

Brought a dear friend here to enjoy the oysters with me for the first time and other delicious seafood items. However, our oysters and the snow crab were just too salty to finish. I do enjoy the country music and the up beat staff. The Moscow mule was refreshing. Our tab was well over a $100.00 and the satisfaction was minimal and voiced to the manager. I would surely inform the waitress or waiters to explain the different types of oysters sweet vs. salty and the different cooking style for the snow crab since the manager explained after our meal. This would prevent unsatisfied customers ordering and paying a high tab for salty dishes that are known to be prepared this way by Dixie. I hope this helps to improve service and dishes. Our family has always enjoyed coming here. Whenever we miss our Southern home on the mainland we tended to decide to dine at Dixie Grill. I personally enjoy the crab bisque soup they have during Crab Fest. The Green Fried Tomatoes are my favorite appetizers. My go to sandwich is the Triple Decker Turkey BLT. My kids love the grilled cheese with a fruit bowl and splitting the fries. My almost two year old loves the chicken tenders. The service has always been great. When I was pregnant the waiters were always more than happy to heat up the turkey in my Triple Decker BLT and not once ever complained or made me feel bad about requesting. The Mai Tai Drinks they have are massive. I will miss this place when we move. read more

Stopped in today for happy hour and as a vegan, I was absolutely surprised and delighted to see the impossible burger on their menu. The impossible burger at a bbq place? Sold. Our server was super nice and even brought me a side of sauce that her cousin (also vegan) always dips her fries and burgers in. I was told the bun is not vegan so just got it with the toppings. I've been here once and it was for a lunch with the department I work for. First of all, the restaurant is fairly big, but it does get hot inside, especially during a hot and humid day. Prior to lunch, I of course checked the yelp reviews to see what would be best to get. I decided on the Pulled Pork Sandwich and an order of their famous sweet tea. The sweet tea is as AMAZING as everyone says it is. There was something even more amazing though, the UNLIMITED REFILLS on the sweet tea! AND THE BEST thing about it is that you're able to get a TO-GO cup of sweet tea for the road! VERY AWESOME! The pulled pork was alright, it was very tender and tasty. I added some memphis bbq sauce (one of six bbq sauces that's available conveniently on your table). Overall, this is a good place to get lunch. I heard that they have good happy hour deals, so i'll definitely need to go back and try it out. There's ample amount of parking spaces, but it does fill up especially during peak hours. read more

Been here twice. The first time was in April. We stopped in since it was on the way home. It was the start of my Birthday weekend and my bf had told our waitress that it was my Birthday and she had no acknowledgement towards that whereas the table next to us got a free dessert and sang happy birthday to. *shrugs* I ordered the pulled pork sandwich on the Hawaiian bread roll and my bf ordered the dungeness crab. We can eat crab elsewhere for the same price and probably had better tasting crab, and two whole ones instead of like three legs of it. Cornbread casserole however was amazing! Along with that we had sweet tea and swamp water. Swamp water tastes like an LA Water to me so I liked it and sweet tea was good. Waitress was okay she checked up on us most of the time. However, moths and termites were flying all over and I found a few in our drinks. Told the waitress and she's like "yeah sorry it happens" but doesn't offer a new drink. Minus a few bucks on your tip. Second time was a few hours ago. Bf's parents are in town and he wanted them to try the cornbread casserole so he suggested we go here to grab a bite. Cornbread casserole was amazing as always. My fish and chip sucks because too much batter! I kept biting into batter more than I could find any fish. His parents had pulled pork with mac salad and beans for their sides and they liked it. BF had a sandwich I forgot what it was called with fried mac n cheese in it. He said it sucked and didn't like it. The burger looked like a mess. Sweet tea was good as always. Our waitress Angela, lil Miss Blondie gave some crappy service! When she took our orders she was nice to everyone but me. She was quite snooty with me. Everyone else noticed it too, maybe because I was the only Asian in our party or heck in the whole place. My water was empty the whole time and she saw it a few times and didn't ask or didn't come to refill it. I had ask for a refill several times and got none. She was nowhere to be found after she took our order. She came only once literally when our food arrived and asked how everything tasted. How should we know we didn't get a chance to eat it yet! It wasn't even busy. It was 2:30pm-4pm when we were there and there was a lot of workers standing around talking to one another instead of acknowledging when customers are in need or thanking them for dining in. I decided to not come here anymore. it's not a place I would recommend to anyone and if anyone knows about it I'd make sure they wouldn't want to go either(I have the power to do so lol). read more

Growing up as a southern boy (North Carolina, and yes it is still the south!) i ate plenty of catfish, fried okra, and drank more than enough sweet tea. Believe me when i say that Dixie Grill does not disappoint! Best catfish ive had on the island so far! I only come here for catfish so i cant comment on anything else but their fries are good too. Sammy the bartender is super friendly and started treating me like a regular from the second time I came in. What can I say that's bad about this place. Absolutely Nothing. This is just a great place to go. I will come here over and over again. Just a great selection of food. Great service with a smile. Not that fake smile that most put on. Everyone that worked here had a smile of joy working there. When I can here I was feeling really hungry and I new that I wanted crab legs. Now when you want to eat a lot you have two choices....a bucket or a trash can lid of crab. When you get the bucket of crab, you only get one type of crab leg plus corn on the cob, potatoes and shrimp. Now the trash can lid, it is literally a metal trash can lid full of crab legs (all types: snow, king, dungeness). Delicious southern food if you're from the mainland! I enjoy dining here with the family and friends. They have a massive menu fully of yummy favorites, but don't get indecisive trying to figure out what you want. Keep it easy and simple! WARNING: The parking lot is always packed and parking is a joke at times. Get there early if you can and try weeknights instead of weekends. And...they no longer accept American Express for payment. Wash it all down with a gigantic mug of sweet tea, roasted lemonade or enjoy a massive 34 oz screamin' mai tai. With the alcohol they are a bit limited on their selections, but still okay. The decor fits the southern mood, but could be a bit cleaner. The waitresses are nice and upbeat (I've never gotten stuck with a bad waitress/waiter yet). The diversity of people are mainly Caucasian, usually military or others from the mainland, not many locals. The music can be loud at times, but this place is made to be like a country sports bar...what do you expect? I do think though that they need to remove the sand pit in back where the young kids play, only because sometimes they will use the shovels and flying sand will hit your food on the back side seating if it's windy. read more

Tasty food and very reasonable drink specials for happy hour. Walked to here from the Pacific Memorial. I do not recommend doing so, it it probably a mile and a half, though I did not want to eat at Schooners a second time in one day. Anyways as I was walking up the sign greeted me from across the parking lot that it was happy hour. I was alone so I sat at the bar. I got a 34 oz mug of Amber Bock and their BBQ Burger. The BBQ burger was a burger that had Pulled Pork BBQ and cedar cheese on top. The burger also came with fries or chips, I opted for fries and had them put cheese and bacon on top. The food was delicious and the beer hit the spot. I've never seen pulled pork on top of a burger before but it may be one of my new favored things. I'd say my bill with tip was about 20$ (with a 20% tip). All in all very delicious and I wish I would have tried the sweet tea that everyone on here was talking about. read more

Been awhile since I came by here I used to LOVE it, They used to have really good crab deals and the drinks are usually really good but went last night and it was terrible. The serving sizes have changed ALOT, the service also has changed our waitress rarely checked on us, we had to take napkins from another table because the table we were sat on had a napkin roll that was pretty much empty only 1 piece left, I ordered 3 strawberry lemonade drinks with vodka they served it in a small cup and charged me 10.50 for 1 shot of vodka in each drink and then 1.50 for the lemonade so altogether $12 a drink. That is horrible considering how small the glasses are. I went with the snow crab cause I remember it being really good last night I got 2 small pieces hardly any meat and the corn I requested as sides were Really Hard and light yellow almost like they weren't boiled long enough or the corn wasn't ripe enough when it was picked. Sad that a good spot ain't so good anymore. read more

Went there for lunch with the boss, not bad of a place. I thought it would be more of a dive. The food was good (Turkey/Bacon Club sandwich with fries) and the service was spot on, the waitress did an awesome job. The sweet tea was addictive, in those super large mugs! read more

Well, we have finally given up on Dixie Grill. It seems every time we come it's worse and worse. We must just be gluttons for punishment. Five of us went last night for dinner to celebrate our son's 21st birthday. We let him choose the restaurant which is how we ended up here. It would not have been our choice at all. Between the 5 of us we had 2 burgers, fried shrimp, a grilled chicken sandwich and the club sandwich. It was all just ok. My husband said it was the worst burger he's had there and that it was really salty. Our son barely touched his shrimp and sides and my dad said it was the weirdest club sandwich he's ever had. It was sloppily thrown together, not cut into pieces and it was on plain white bread, not toasted. I got the Cajun chicken sandwich with the saddest sliver of avocado on it. The chicken was a bit larger than paper thin and extremely dry. The only good thing about the whole meal was the sweet tea. The burger and sandwich prices are typical Hawaii prices but everything else on the menu is way overpriced and the quality is really lacking. Our waitress was not very good and didn't check in often. We had empty drinks for a while before they were refilled. She took my husband's tea to get a refill and NEVER returned with it. We had to ask her about it at the end of the meal and by then it was too late as we were leaving. What capped it all off was the birthday celebration. During the meal my husband got up and let our waitress know that it was our son's birthday. At the end of the meal they all came and sang to him and gave him a brownie with ice cream on top which is typical of what  most restaurants do when there is birthday. When we got the bill I noticed at the bottom of the bill it read "Birthday Brownie" $6.75. They CHARGED us for the desert they brought to him when they sang happy birthday!! I have never been to a restaurant where the restaurant charges for the small desert they give out for birthdays. I was very surprised. They also didn't tell us there would be any charge when my husband told them we were celebrating a birthday. That is really in poor taste. To recap, save your money. We paid close to $100 for 5 people and I can think of dozens and dozens of better restaurants I could have spent $100 at and gotten much better food. read more

I love this place! They have some real good ribs!! I cannot say that they are the best ribs I have ever had but they are pretty yummy. Any time anyone comes out to visit us, we take the there to eat and everyone loves it. Make sure you have one of their screaming Mai Thai because they are huge and very tasty... Neat spot located right off Kamehameha in Aeia. It's interesting to see home style southern cooking in Hawaii done right. They do a good job of bringing a taste of the mainland here and the prices are great. I came with a large group and ordered their two meat combo of brisket and BBQ chicken. If I'm ever in the mood for some good home style I'll definitely come back again. If you're interesting of having a mini-party of 18-20 people there is a section on the left as you walk in for people to hang out. They also have outdoor seating and enough indoor seating as well. The portion sizes on the double meats are good, but I'm used to the southern meals where I'm catatonic afterwards. But still, there's enough for everyone :) read more

I haven't been here since 2012. Decided to see if it was still there and as fun and good as it was before. Sure enough it was. The food was great and the happy hour prices are excellent. The guy making drinks looked like he was 16, but what the heck, he made a great drink.They are always playing some great classic rock too. It was so good that we had to come back again for another great meal. I know we will be back again on our next trip to Ohau. read more
