Yelp pointed out Dixie Donuts to us while we were looking for some food for breakfast and it turned out to be a great choice. We stopped in on a Saturday morning and got some bagels as well as a pistachio muffin. The donuts looked really good but I had a hankering for a bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel and the one I had was delicious. The bagel wasn't as big as I'm used to in NYC but that was great because it was easy to eat and not overly doughy. The real star was the pistachio muffin. That was hands down the best muffin I've ever had. The inside was crowded with a group of older gentlemen holding court but we were able to get a table on the sidewalk to eat and watch the world go by. The ladies behind the counter couldn't have been friendlier. Just super service. It was really nice. Prices were reasonable as well. If you're in Norwich, you should definitely put this on your list. read more

I had high hopes based on the reviews and I love a great local donut shop. I tried a cream filled and maple bacon. The dough from the cream filled tasted very great, like it absorbed too much fryer oil. Yet it was also dry. The flavor of the cream was not the best either. The frosting on the maple bacon had a good flavor but again, the donut dough just wasn't as fluffy or fresh tasting as I'd have preferred. The staff were very friendly and there are lots of options. We stumbled on Dixie Donuts while in the neighborhood for a casino trip, and I'm so glad we did. This little spot has a cozy, old-school vibe, complete with counter seating that gives it a hometown feel. Even though we got there around 10 AM, there was still a solid selection of donuts left-we got lucky. We picked up a half dozen, and every bite was worth it. Real donuts! Made fresh with love. Service was friendly and warm without feeling rushed. You can tell they take pride in what they do. We will definitely be back the next time we're in town. I got to Dixie Donuts close to their closing time, but they were still welcoming and told me what donuts they had any left of. I tried the blueberry cake and boston cream, and a coffee. I was surprised by the size of the interior. Having driven by many times I wasn't expecting a decently sized cafe-esque layout. Once I got home I tried the donuts. I enjoyed the boston cream more than the blueberry cake, but in some bites there was an astringent after-taste. The blueberry cake donut had good texture, but was heavily basted in sugar, leading it to be too sweet. I'll have to try to get there earlier in the future, try a plain donut. In the meantime, if you want an acceptable local morning pastry shop, you could check this place out. read more

When I arrived, there was already three other cars in the parking lot and a mix of older and younger people. I'm glad I got in when I did on a Saturday before 8 o'clock. Because it soon as I got in there begin to have a crowd of people that came in. So get there before 8 AM to miss the crowd. I chose quite a few of their different donuts. It looked interesting. Heading home to try them out. They also have delicious coffee. I got home and the coconut cream donuts were the best out of everything that I got. Cute little local donut shop. Was small inside with few tables, we went at 9 am on a Saturday, waited a few minutes inline. Looks like a bunch of locals have been sitting at most of the tables for a while so there wasn't anywhere to sit so we took it to go. We each ordered a donut with a breakfast sandwich. The bagels were fresh and the donuts not too sweet. I was watching them make the breakfast sandwich and they just microwaved the sausage patty with a slice of cheese on top before putting it on the bagel to create the sandwich. The overall breakfast sandwich lacked taste and overall wasn't impressive. I'd definitely stick to the donuts if I were to return. I'd like to try the lemon donut. read more

It was our first time here and we were not disappointed! Upon entering, we were greeted by the kindest, most helpful three ladies. Everyone had a smile and we all joined in small talk. My son was even treated with a sample of warm donut holes. The spread is phenomenal with something for everyone. We purchased donuts, bagels and danish and everything was fresh and delicious. I visited Dixie donuts several times over the past years. They've always had very good donuts. People come from miles around to get these delicious treats. I thought it was time. I put a review in after so many visits. The good: The donuts are fantastic. My favorite is the Blueberry jelly donut. I can't find them anywhere else. This is the main reason for the trip. I usually have a 50/50 chance of getting them because they sell out! Definitely worth the drive. The Bad: Every time I go there, there seems to be a group of old timers that take over the bakery for hours. Basically, you can forget about getting a cup of coffee and having a donut there. It would be nice if they could be a little considerate of the other customers. The Ugly: Very often, they sell out. The product is really good so that's no surprise. Summary: If you're looking for some excellent quality donuts with a friendly staff, this is the place. Be sure to get there early to get the best choice. Heard many good things about this spot but never made it there till recently. We went at 9am on a Friday and got an assortment of donuts. Tried the old fashioned and cinnamon first. These cake donuts were dry/stale like they had been sitting out for a long time. The third donut tried was the jelly donut which was super sweet. Restaurant was clean and staff was friendly. Good donuts, bad service. I wanted to try this place because I was looking for a doughnut shop with a more varied selection than Baker's Dozen. The doughnuts were indeed delicious and the coffee was good. My server had a bad attitude. She greeted me with a stone faced look and a monotone "good morning". The way she looked at me and said this customary greeting was so off-putting I almost walked out the door. I know it's early in the morning, you might have personal issues going on and you might not be good at faking enthusiasm. But if you can't even say "good morning" with a rising intonation and something approaching a smile, then find something not customer-facing for work. The other two servers seemed quite pleasant. The shift manager made my coffee. I will not return. Customer service is important and this person didn't deliver it. I still gave them a tip. This little doughnut shop appears to be well loved by their regulars. I witnessed lovely exchanges between some of them. We received lukewarm service the morning we stopped by. The pros were the doughnuts appear to be made fresh and were good. The cons were that our rolls on our breakfast sandwiches were burnt. Even one of the other well known customers commented to the staff when he walked in, "what are you guys burning?" Little did we know that it was the inside of our rolls. TERRIFIC DONUTS! We went in at 6 am Friday morning, & the place was already busy! Scored a table after we each ordered a donut & coffee, sat & watched the scene. When Sue behind the counter found out we were new customers from out of state, she insisted on giving us a bag of donut holes - every bit as delicious as what we ordered. My husband loved his Samoa donut (chocolate, coconut & caramel just like the cookie), while I devoured my apple turnover. The "old fashioned" donut holes were so tender & delicious - old fashioned donuts are my favorite anyway but these were the best I've ever had. I moved to Norwich a year ago, but only discovered Dixie Donuts 6 months ago. Now I make the trip about once a week, gladly passing several "Dunkin's" along the way. Great donuts, huge selection, and the best big cinnamon rolls anywhere! I'm a picky coffee drinker, but I've never had a bad cup here. We've been going here for a few years and I have to say this is probably the best donut shop in the area. They have a decent variety of raised (yeast) donuts, cake donuts and a couple of other non-donut goods like bagels, sandwiches and coffee. I recommend getting there before 8:00am, but preferably when they open 5:30-6am, otherwise there is not a good selection to choose from. They often sell out by 11am, sometimes by 10am. Often times I have gone there at 7:30 and there was not as much of a variety to choose from to fill a dozen donut box. Pretty inexpensive. Expect to pay around $12.50 for a dozen donuts. read more
