Keeping this one brief for now since I have some bias here as I helped design this place almost 30 years ago. I really thought it was 25 years ago but the owner/Chef Goran Milic reminded me that it was 28 years ago. With their recent media coverage, no wonder he remembers so vividly. And with that bit of information I am really dating myself. Ugh. Divino is located at the Barrington Court which is notorious for its challenge to find parking. It is also why I tend to avoid this area when it comes to dining out. For my and my wife's anniversary we decided to come here around 1130AM hoping to be one of the first customers. As it turned out it opened at noon so we were definitely extra early. This gave me the opportunity to drop in and say hello to the owner as well as check out one of my early architecture works. It's noteworthy to point out that they will be launching a bar/ private room upstairs so I look forward to checking that out in the near future. It's still under construction but it shouldn't be too far out. Divino is most well known for its pasta and seafood dishes. So my wife chose a pasta dish along with Branzino for our anniversary lunch. The foods were super tasty and exquisite. Chef Goran Milic is from Montenegro but trained in Italy so his Italian foods certainly have a strong Adriatic Coast flare. We went with tiramisu as our dessert. It was out of this world!! So must order if you're planning to visit. Just bummed that the restaurant still charged for anniversary desserts. That is pretty common in LA but I figure Chef Goran would treat an "old friend" to something extra. Haha. If you want to listen to white hairs complaints about first world problems, you've found the place. It was incredible to have a reservation at a very nice restaurant to then be ignored for 20 minutes. Wasn't present any specials, wasn't said to have a happy Valentine's Day, wasn't even offered drinks; until I had to ask a waiter myself "do you even have any specials, what's the wine tonight?" We didn't see them for another 20 minutes after that. Not busy at all; reservation for dinner opening at 530 sharp. Had to give the waiter the 1000 yard stare twice to get them to come over. It was a red flag that the maître d' purposely didn't acknowledge us, new customers, yet asked all the tables around us if they wanted a tour of the new upstairs he designed himself, boasting offers of wines from his own recommendations. Being bored and ignored wasn't on the menu that we could see. Food came out quickly. We sat in silence for the next 25 minutes while everyone else at the tables beside us complained about there not being a gluten free option of pasta. We would have loved to have been treated equally. The tables were all so extremely close, we had to listen to all the parties around us complain about how close the tables were... and how they were bumping each others elbows followed by letting F bombs fly freely. Being a thorough business owner myself for over 20 years, I see a lot of room for improvements that the menu itself couldn't make up for. The ambience was not of the caliber I was promised. Everything from the incredible recommendations our server gave us to how much attention to detail the busser had, changing cutlery at each service. The food was delicious and unreal! Never ever disappoints! We had a quiet lunch here last week and really enjoyed ourselves. The owners husband and wife are front and center at all times, helping with every detail. I had the Barada and tomato salad, which was fresh and absolutely delicious. My main course was porcini, mushroom risotto, served hot, and bursting with flavor. I have to go 4 stars because in our new world, valet parking is gone. And in this part of Brentwood... boy do they need it unless you're good to walk (think women in heels) a bit. One hour parking with very few spaces. Otherwise it's a 5! Great smiling staff with full bar, good martinis and other yummy starters. Fresh baked buttered crispy focaccia to start. Yes please. The menu didn't jump out at me, but we both ordered the specials that did. My sausage broccolini with pasta was an explosion of great taste. They know there pasta here as every bite was perfectly cooked. The staff made sure to recommend the wine pairings and I love that. And the iced wine barrel with choices! Divino is located inside a small plaza, so parking is limited. Luckily on a thursday around 7pm we had no trouble finding a spot. It's a very small restaurant inside, so I would recommend reservations as I can see how it can get very busy. We had reservations and were seated immediately upon arriving. The ambiance is nice both inside and outside. The waitress assumed we were "too young" for the wine list, as she said. While I myself am, the rest of my party wasn't so it was a bit of an odd assumption to make. The kitchen requires both your appetizer order and entree order at the same time, so keep that in mind when looking at the menu. The service was quick and our server was around often if we needed anything. Keep in mind that they charge for water. Two bottles of water were $18 all together. (ouch!!) We didn't even realize we were served two. The food is beyond delicious. And when ordering, our server was very thorough in explaining some of the things on the menu. The bread served at the beginning of the meal was also amazing. I don't think you could order anything bad on the menu. read more

I'll caveat this review with the fact that I'm not familiar with authentic Italian food or culture, so take my perspective with a grain of salt. The greeting was prompt when I arrived, but I didn't find the staff (at all) friendly. The waitress did a "just you?" as if I had a second head. I asked for flat water. She said, "just plain!?" I said yes. I was brought a $9 bottle of Avian out. Divine (and clearly homemade) bread was brought out. It was, perhaps, the best part of the meal. I ordered a glass of wine and margherita pizza. The pizza came quickly but was slightly undercooked, leaving the crust just the slightest bit "doughy." Worst, though, was the impression I got that my mere presence was a nuisance or burden. This continued for the entirety of the meal. I'm a southerner. Maybe my expectations were too high? ProTip: the menu varies wildly from the pics posted in other Yelp reviews, and the puttanesca I was craving was not available. read more

Divino - what makes it divine? Divino is a gem on Barrington Court in Brentwood. To date, I have eaten there at least 60 times, so I have a pretty good feel for the restaurant. The restaurant is led by the owner Goran and his wife, Vanya. They are staffed by lifers, which means that most of the staff has been there for many years, know the menu, and know the customers Food (5 stars) - Simply put, the food is fresh, properly seasoned and cooked, and prepared in a parsimonious manner, i.e., they aim to use fewer ingredients while creating an array of flavors. Some of the menu items worth sampling: - Tomato soup - it is vegan and one of the best bowls of tomato soup that I've eaten. there are relatively few ingredients in the soup, but the time and care taken to prepare it explains why it tastes so good. - Pasta dishes - My faces are the rigatoni al ragu and the porcini mushroom risotto. The pasta is always prepared al dente, and is neither too hard nor to soft, the ragu is a rich blend of meat, tomatoes, and other spices, and the accompanying sauce on the risotto is flavorful and substantive without being to creamy or dense. - pizza - I enjoy thin crust pizza, and the crust on the pizzas at Divino is kick ass. I particularly enjoy the pizza bianca and the margherita. - Fish - Both the branzino and the salmon are expertly prepared. The salmon is accompanied by an absolutely delicious lemon caper sauce - red meat - I rarely eat red meat, but every so often I share a t-bone with my dining partners at Divino. The meat is flavorful, the fat is trimmed nicely, the medium-rare steak cuts easily, and the simple seasoning (Kosher salt) adds to/complements the flavor of the meat. - vegetables - The restaurant prepares a swiss chard onion sautee, which is superb and which I have not eaten anywhere else. Other vegetables are sauteed expertly with a touch of olive oil, pepper, and (kosher) salt. -dessert - I love desserts, but rarely order them. When I have tried the tiramisu, I was impressed. they manage to prepare in a way that embraces the blend of the alcohol, the lady fingers, and other ingredients. Moreover, the lady fingers are not soggy; somehow, they manage to remain firm. Only recommendation - - from time to time, the food arrives warm rather than hot. Best to ensure how you want it delivered to your table. Staff (5 star): Polite, unobtrusive, attentive, and accommodating. Ambience (4 to 5 star): It really depends what you're looking for in this regard. The setting is rustic and warm. Even when it is busy, I can speak at a normal volume and hear what it is that my dining companions have to say. That is important to me. Consistency (5 star): For me, a source of frustration is the degree to which the quality of food varies over time at different restaurants. While many restaurants seem to experience a decline in the quality of food over time, Divino consistently creates excellent food in a relaxed and warm atmosphere. Their approach to food prep is simple, they've refined the menu, and know how to deliver a great product. Taken together, Divino is a go-to restaurant for me. Came here with a friend at 6:30 on a Saturday night, we had a reservation but it wasn't super packed at that time. However it did fill up rather quickly as we were eating so would recommend one. Ambiance: Nice and cozy, definitely a place for a nicer dinner or someplace you bring someone you've been dating for a while. We ordered 2 appetizers, 2 pasta dishes, 2 glasses of wine and we were stuffed by the end. The dinner started off with some free bread, and garlic naan which was amazing btw and then were served our scallops and burrata. For the scallops I actually thought that there would be more than just one so I felt a little skimped on that, but overall the dish was balanced. The burrata was amazing! who doesn't love burrata but idk it felt a bit weird that the chunks of beets were so big that it was a bit unwieldy to serve. I ordered the Tagliatelle alla Pescatrice and my friend ordered the Linguine ai Frutti Mare, my dish was as good and as authentic as I would expect out of a pasta dish from Italy. My tagliatelle definitely was freshly made and had that Al dente bite and texture. The ragu itself was a delight, not super salty or strong, but well balanced, all the ingredients in harmony. An absolute hidden gem. Wow - what incredible food and a cozy atmosphere. Every item we ordered was fantastic. The price didn't even bother me because the food was that good. My favorites of the night included the Cappesante app and the gnocchi (I got it with the chicken ragu sauce). I've never had gnocchi that soft and pillowy before in my life! I've had dinner here twice now. Both times, I very much enjoyed the food, the service, and the ambience. FOOD On my second visit, we shared the burrata appetizer (slices of two kinds of tomatoes with burrata and basil leaves). It was an excellent way of starting our dinner. For my entree, I chose the Tagliatelle alla Pescatrice, homemade tagliatelle served with monk fish ragu and pine nuts. I have had pasta dishes in Italy quite a few times, but their monk fish tagliatelle was one of the most flavorful dishes I have ever had (5 stars). My son ordered a pizza (Capricciosa). It was very good but I've had much better pizza. SERVICE Their service is always great (5 stars). Their servers are very professional like good career waiters in Europe: courteous and knowledgeable. AMBIENCE I think the atmosphere here is classy (but not over the top) and can be romantic. I would not be surprised if some people do not like the ambience because it may feel a bit outdated or the decor is a bit eclectic (e.g., a huge canoe hanging). PARKING They offer valet parking. I don't remember how much but I thought it was very reasonable. There are several parking meters in front of the restaurant too. CONCLUSIONS Excellent service and great food. The prices are also more than reasonable. As of writing this review, the (dinner) antipasti range from $16 to $19, and the primi (dinner pasta dishes) from $24 to $26. The only reason I took off one star is that I've not been impressed by their wine. All the wines (by the glass) we have tried are ok, but not great. I would expect more given the quality of the food that they serve. I went to Divino for a lunch with coworkers during the week and really enjoyed it. We all commented on the ambiance, decor, and high ceilings. The service was great. Our server refilled our bread basket and filled our water glasses without us even having to ask. The gentleman who listed off the specials and took our orders appeared to be the chef himself. My coworkers who ordered the Pollo All Limone and Tramezzino Di Salmone, both of which came with a side of potatoes and swish chard, loved their meals.
