When it comes to bubble tea, nothing catches my attention more than the word - Taiwan. Ding Tea, like many others in the area, is also a Taiwan franchise. On a Saturday night at 6:45pm, the entire place was empty and we were the only customers. I didn't see the out-of-sightline staff member seated behind the counter (probably nothing else to do) until I was browsing through the menu on the tablet. A part of me hates tablet ordering (from any place). How many people have touched this screen since its last cleaning? I also don't get to ask questions or request suggestions. I wish the staff member would simply say hello when I walked in, so I know he is there. The lighting is very dim inside. From the outside, it almost looked like it could be closed. With no other customers, I suppose it makes sense to turn the lights down. But that is not inviting to many customers. For my drink, I went with the signature black milk tea. It's my baseline drink. I ordered 25% sugar and 25% ice. The size in the photo is upsized to a large at +$1; their large is the same as many other places' standard size. The cost was (I think) $6.75, a tiny bit more than other places. The milk tea is richly smoky. The tea flavor was strong, just the way I like it. The 25% sweetness is perfect for me, but hubby always likes it sweeter. It was a tasty beverage. I probably will return. read more

Seattle-Area Boba Shop Review #78 After only half a year in Seattle, I'm already running out of boba shops to visit in U District! Ding Tea is one of the few left on my list, saved towards the end because I've visited many Ding Tea locations already. As expected of this brand, this location also has some unique drinks that I wanted to try. In particular, the menu states they have Jin Xuan tea on the weekends, but for some reason they didn't have it when we visited. Oh well, back to the classic drink then, ordered on the kiosk: Signature Milk Tea, 50% Sweet, 50% Ice w/ Golden Boba ($7.15) - This drink took a surprisingly long time to come out, like the worker was a bit confused on what to do. What I received was a drink that tastes totally different to the signature milk tea of any other Ding Tea I've visited. It has much less creamer added, which allows much more of the somewhat grass jellyish hongcha flavor to come out. The drink at half sweet seems to be less sweet than other Ding Teas at half - good for not-too-sweet. And yet the drink tastes like it's been watered down. It's not just that the watery body, but the taste as well. The boba is clearly sweetened, and while on the softer side, has a good chew and bounce, and is nicely smooth on the exterior. The boba is much better than the tea. Milk Tea Rating: 2/5 Boba Rating: 4/5 I'm not entirely sure what went wrong with the tea here - the signature is usually pretty solidly constructed. Maybe I was there on an off day,given the generally high reviews, but my drink was not good. I got a small Hokkaido oolong milk tea with75% sugar, 50% ice and golden boba. This was about the same price as a small in other boba shops, but was smaller than normal I think. The milk tea tasted a bit watered down - not that there wasn't any tea or milk flavor but it wasn't strong. I thought the boba was bad - even though the texture was okay, it tasted weird, almost plasticky. I really did not like the boba and ended up throwing away most of it after finishing the tea part. I rather give this place a ZERO STAR - Here is what happened today - My friends and I have been coming to Ding Tea on the Ave for years as our go-to spot to relax after lunch. Today, though, was a complete letdown. We were casually browsing the menu and chatting when the owner, Kang Han ( I don't know the exact spelling but he is indeed the owner of Ding Tea on on the Ave), came over and demanded we order immediately or leave. His tone was rude and condescending, and the whole interaction felt aggressive and completely uncalled for. Believe me, I had been going to the Ave for over 20+ years. I went to school (UW) here and never been treated ever by any business like this on the AVE. We told him we were regulars--one of us has even tipped 25% in the past--but he scoffed and said he's always at the store and doesn't recognize us. Then, in a passive-aggressive move, he pointed at a sign saying "we have the right to refuse service to anyone," which felt like a slap in the face. This kind of behavior from an owner is baffling. It's as if he's actively trying to drive customers away. Maybe Seattle got to him--or maybe he genuinely doesn't care about the business anymore. Either way, we won't be coming back, and if you value being treated with basic respect, you might want to think twice before going yourself. I didn't like Ding Tea when I was first exploring spots at UW, but it's grown on me. I think the biggest thing was understanding their ice levels being different than other spots. Less ice here means 75% so you still get a cup full of ice. However, you get the added option of "slight" ice which is 25%. That's pretty neat, but you need to understand the system or you'll get a drink that waters down quicker than you expect if you order light ice at every boba spot. However, no ice costs you an extra quarter, so that's a bummer. Everyone raves about the golden boba here and it's not offered at every Ding Tea location (looking at you, Lynnwood). Golden boba has increased chewiness compared to regular boba so it's definitely more engaging to chew and the nice thing is that they make pretty good boba here. Ding Tea also uses a fair amount of tea that you can generally taste. It's one of the best spots if you prefer tea flavors over creaminess or milk but it's still a great spot if you prefer more balance or milkiness. My usual go-to is a classic jasmine green milk tea with boba. I don't care for it much here. It's good, but I prefer other spots if I'm sticking with that order. Taro Milk Tea - standard, not too powdery and overall refreshing. Would recommend when you're unsure of what to get. It's a very creamy, nutty, and almost vanilla-like taste. Strawberry Yakult/Yogurt - not the thickest consistency, but you can taste the Yakult. Slightly sweet and fruity, the Yakult blends well with any of the fruit choices for yogurt drinks. It even tastes healthy. Overall, the biggest selling point (and most common thing my friends note) is the golden boba. It's a different texture and chew than regular honey boba or brown sugar boba. The tea is pretty fair and standard, but the boba is what sets Ding Seattle apart, especially with the maintained prices. read more

My husband and I came here after getting dessert. There are multiple bubble tea places all along the street, at least 3 or 4 within a 30 second walking distance. We chose Ding Tea since we had never been, and it was right next door. Service was fine, not super friendly but efficient. I appreciate that they ask for your sugar/ice levels. They have a good amount of options, I love that they have a lot of different types of fruit tea. My husband went for a black tea with half sugar and regular ice. I got the strawberry black tea with lychee jelly, half sugar and regular ice. Price wise, it was similar to that of the other bubble tea places. Drinks came out fairly quickly. I splurged an extra $0.20 and tried the crystal boba for the first time this past week. It reminded me of lychee jelly without the lychee flavor because of the agar like texture. I got it in a 50% sweet brown sugar milk tea, but I would definitely recommend pairing the crystal boba with a fruity tea or fruity milk tea rather than a sweet milk tea. I absolutely love Ding Tea! My favorite boba spot used to be Sharetea but I gotta say Ding Tea has wowed me. I would say their drinks taste just as good as Sharetea but Ding Tea tops it for the variety of toppings offered. It's hard to find boba shops that offer crystal boba or golden boba so I always choose the golden boba when I'm here! It has the same texture as regular tapioca but it tastes more sweet and chewy in my opinion. It just pairs really well with any flavor! Also try their popular brown sugar monster latte! My husband and I decided to stop this afternoon, around 12:50 pm for some tea. After browsing the menu, we ended up ordering: Hot Milk Taro Tea, $3.50 prior to tax- Because this place is currently in their grand opening, small drinks are automatically upgraded for free (also the current Yelp check in provides Yelp members 1 free upgrade). My husband requested that this drink be made with 50% sweetener. Initially, he thought it was watered down (and I have to agree when I tried it). So he explained to an employee of the taste and so she remade it. My husband thought the drink was better, but still left this artificial, chemical taste. I didn't try his drink the 2nd time so I can't comment on it. Hot Hokkaido Black Milk Tea, $3.50 prior to tax- I opted for this drink to be made at 50% sweetener as well. I thought this drink was made fine, but did leave a strong aftertaste of the hokkaido (I would describe as a caramel, strong milk tea flavor), which did not bother me. ----------------------------- (Total= $7.71, after tax) Initially, I ordered a logan tea but was told that they are not able to make it. I was disappointed since that is what I always like to order at Ding Tea (it's a chain) because so few tea houses actually offer it. I wanted to order the lychee milk tea, but that is only made available iced and I wanted a hot drink for the cold rainy day. So I opted for the hokkaido drink (lately my current drink of choice at tea houses). I appreciate that the employee that made our drinks asked us how our drink was and if we wanted to make adjustments, she would be able to do so without any problem. But even with 2 adjustments of trying to redo my husband's drink, I don't think I can give this place anything above 3 stars (but 3 stars still means "A-Ok" people, so don't freak out) and find this particular location to be average. Yes they are brand new and some bugs may still need to be worked out, but for the time being, based on this trip, 3 stars.
