I've been to Macu (UW) a few times, now. Overall, their li-li teas (with the fresh fruit pulp) are my favorite. The milk teas are alright, but in my opinion Taiwan-style fresh fruit teas are where it's at. Chi-chi grape smoothie: I'm a big fan of grape smoothie and very excited to try it here. It was yummy and not too sweet for me. The cheese foam is a bit salty and goes well with the drink. Macu Tea is one of my favorite boba spots, super glad they're around U-District. The location seems cursed though, there have been at least 4 different boba spots in the past decade maybe because of rent but I hope Macu sticks around. According to my brother it's also very popular in Taiwan and I can see why (unlike all the other boba spots that claim to be popular in Taiwan but really aren't). While they're known for the fruit teas and "drinking desserts" that can be filling, I really enjoy their milk teas and boba. Mangoes are a huge hit here, but I'm not sure if they get worse when not in season, as another friend tried the mango recently and thought it was mid. Golden Leaf Milk Tea w/ Boba - this is my go to and the boba always hits. It's soft and chewy with actual flavor as they do a good job marinating in brown sugar. While it could be bouncier, the boba is fresh every time I visit. The tea is a light oolong which is light and refreshing with faint floral undertones. Maybe a little too much milk but the ratio is pretty solid for a balance of creaminess and tea presence. read more

First time I had mango smoothie was at the MACU in Canada. I didn't know there were locations in WA!!! I heard there's a Bellevue location which is closer to me. I did notice the mango seemed more fresh and sweet at the Canada location. UW location was a bit more tart. Still good. I just ordered via the kiosk, so never really interacted with the employees except when they called my number. It seemed like a normal Busy college town where people hung out and studied. Glad these kids have a place to hang out. Parking was filled with homeless hanging out. So hubby dropped me off until I called to let him know I'm ready. I'll have to check out the Bellevue location next. Wish they had a location south end. Macu Tea does fruit tea really well! I dropped by on a chilly Seattle evening and ordered the grapefruit li-li tea. Drinks took a while to come out but they were pretty busy, being near a college and all. The shop was clean and cute, with some good seating for yapping and sipping on our tea. I also appreciate that they had boba sleeves on offer which are convenient for transport, especially on a cold day. A somewhat petty gripe I have is that their drink naming makes it a bit confusing to understand exactly what I am ordering. I had to read the menu closely to understand what chi-chi and li-li were. There is a difference between a tea with fruit and a Fruit Tea to me, and Macu's grapefruit li-li tea was definitely the latter. The drink came with plentiful fresh pulp, perfectly sweetened, that bursts in your mouth with each sip. At a reduced sweetness, it was still a tad too sweet for me. The fragrant jasmine tea paired so well with it, and each component enhanced the other. It was very good for such a deceptively simple drink! So far Macu Tea is my favorite boba shop in UW. I had the classic Chi-Chi Golden Leaf tea 30% sugar which I think I should have gotten 80% sugar instead. I visited Macu Tea on a whim, just to try out a new boba shop that I hadn't been to before. Tieguanyin Oolong Milk Tea, 50% Sugar, 50% Ice w/ Boba ($6) - Okay, so I think I got the wrong drink here. I didn't do any research before visiting Macu Tea and didn't realize they were so famous for their fresh fruit drinks - I should have gotten that hint by the fact that I saw so many boxes of fresh mangoes and oranges in the store, but I guess I wasn't thinking about that too much. Instead, went with a milk tea that I normally enjoy. Unfortunately, the milk tea at Macu is not great. At 50% sweet, all of the delicate flavors from the tieguanyin are completely overpowered by the sharp taste of fructose in the drink. Even the milk powder sits in the background here, resulting in an overly sweet drink without much other flavor. I ended up diluting it with extra tea and it made the drink better, but still not great. Unlike the milk tea, the boba here is excellent. The pearls are able to slightly compress on the tongue with a bit of effort, the mark of boba with great chew. The boba is smooth on the exterior, very consistent in both size and texture and has a slight sweetness to round things out. Drink Rating: 3/5 Boba Rating: 5/5 The boba here is excellent, but I'm not sure the milk teas are worth getting. I'll have to revisit in the future to try out their specialty fruit drinks. Friend and I got the golden leaf tea drink at 50% sweetness and with 3Q (which is boba, coconut jelly and agar jelly), and it comes with a fabric drink carrier, which made the drink more aesthetically pleasing to look at. Everything with this drink in particular was well-made, the 3Q I added in compensated for the 50% sweetness I asked for in the drink! Drink felt very fresh and you could definitely taste the tea in it. I saw Macu Tea during my trip last year to Taiwan and was surprised to see they had opened in the states. Staff are friendly and there's a few tables to sit around. I got the golden leaf tea at 50% sweetness. The golden leaf tea is a cross between green and black tea as described by the staff. It was like a lighter four season tea which is on the earthy side. It sure was dumping rain that day, but lucked out with nearby paid street parking and was allowed inside as the first customer of the day. Very welcoming staff lead/manager. Cases of fresh fruit and bright, sleek interior greeted me upon entry. They were definitely well staffed to deal with the crowd that appeared behind me promptly at noon. I checked in and posted photos via Yelp while onsite. I did the BOGO free deal and received a pair of decadent dessert beverages, Chocolate Tiramisu.
