4.5 stars for the area - best dim sum in flat iron area. Surprisingly good noodle soups. Much much better than Awesome Dim Sum nearby which inexplicably has a higher rating. Maybe more Westerners reviewed that one? Tim Ho Wan is more authentic down in union square. And Din Tai Fung in Times Square is legit. But this is the best in the neighborhood. And very friendly. read more

Still excellent food. Been here a few times. The dim sum and Peking duck is excellent. Noodle soup is top notch. Don't like the cold chicken feet - being blended with random peppers makes it taste like peppers when it should taste more bland. Great HK iced coffee. We will be back! read more

Stopped by for a quick snack to eat before catching my bus. In the quick five minutes I visited the space is clean, bright and warm. The Din Sun selection is pretty extensive but I rushed through in ordering: steamed pork bun and vegetable spring roll. Both items were @$6.50 each which for small bites I find a bit pricey. The steamed pork buns, 3 minis, were delicious. The spring rolls, three pieces, were also tasty. However, for that price I honestly could find a better meal, salad at DIG, and healthier. Sadly, this is a one night only for me. read more

I never thought I'd see the day where a traditional Cantonese restaurant with hanging ducks in the window would set up shop in Flatiron right on 23rd street. I didn't know there was a market for this cuisine I grew up eating in the area but maybe that goes to show how little I know about the area because I've observed pretty steady dining traffic here since they opened. The chefs and staff are all Chinese, and even answer their phones in Chinese by default, so they're serving a clientele of Chinese customers as much as non-Chinese customers in the area. As for the food, the limited menu includes Cantonese classics like wonton noodle soup, congee, some limited dim sum, and rice noodle rolls. For my pescatarian palate, I found the options somewhat limited since most dishes contain pork or chicken, but I've enjoyed a few things on my visits over the last few months they've been open. The shrimp rice rolls are pretty good, as are the shrimp dumplings and shrimp rolls. The vegetarian congee is super bland-- I think it's disappointing when a place needs to rely on meat to make a dish flavorful, and their vegetarian versions of these dishes are an afterthought with little to no flavor. The seating area in the back is truly bare bones, but it's clean and rarely crowded. You order and pay up front and bus your tables yourself. I much prefer another dim sum place right up the street from Dim Sum Sam, which has a more extensive menu and much more flavorful dishes, but I'm pleased to find a traditional Cantonese restaurant in the neighborhood. Plus, their egg tarts are phenomenal when fresh out of the oven. Good enough for multiple return visits. read more

Omg the chili oil??!! Theirs was one of the most flavorful yet not that spicy chili oils and it was amazing. Anyways, I got the minced pork rice rolls, siu mai, and har gow. A little more pricey that what I usually pay in Chinatown but it's on Broadway, what'd you expect. They gave a HUGE amount of pork in the rice roll which was great. It wasn't really a roll like I'm used to. They kind of just scrunched it together. But still overall very good and they gave vegetables with it! The other two were good. Typical, nothing out of the water. It's a typical Cantonese chop shop where they have the hanging roast meats (wish they had it in the window for people to see as they walk by-but it's inside the store past the cashier). Good choice if you can't make it to Chinatown! read more

Dim Sum Sam has been on my rotation of lunch options pretty regularly. Located in Flatiron, they have an assortment of dim sum, but my favorite things to order are probably the rice bowls or the noodle soups which are comforting on a rainy day. I usually get my orders to go but they have a dining area in the back. The restaurant is bright, clean and airy. Sometimes during busy periods, the wait after you order can be up to 10 -15 min long. You can also use their website to place your order online and pick up in the store. I've been here several items and everything I've ordered so far is super delicious. You can also see the kitchen where they make everything to order which is cool! My favorite items are the + Shrimp and Pork Wonton Noodle Soup + BBQ Roast Pork over Rice The prices are very reasonable, portions are filling and the staff is helpful. Highly recommend! read more

Dim Sum Sam is yum, yum, yum. Also super fast and very nice. My Mr. & I are often in Flatiron and DSS has been our go to spot for quick and tasty eats. I have to say we will be taking a break from doing so as the last time we stopped by and decided to eat in, the soy sauce chicken was sadly stone cold. Very strange, must have been an off day for them. read more

Was craving Roast Duck so came across this place located less than 5 minutes walk away from my office. Ordered the 2 meat combo over rice; Roast Duck and Roast Pork. Paid extra for the Roast Pork. They got my order wrong and gave me BBQ Pork with Roast Pork instead. Super disappointed as I specifically came for the Roast Duck. The BBQ Pork was too lean which made it kind of dry and the Roast Pork was way too fatty, not enough actual pork. Skin was crispy but can tell it's not super fresh. Came with an over-boiled egg and some pickled veggies. Sweet soy sauce coating rice was good but not enough. Was not able to check my order upon receiving it because the bag was stapled when handed to me. Had to ask for utensils too. Not sure if I'll go out of my way to order from here again but will give it another shot if craving Chinese BBQ while in the area and need a quick meal. read more

As someone who has frequented often and grew up with Cantonese cuisine, this place is legit. It's always questionable when a place like this pops up in a business area such as Flatiron. Glad to see that the tastes and flavors are what you can find in Chinatown. Prices are a tad higher than Cantonese restaurants I'm used to but it's probably compensating for the neighborhood they operate in. You place your order in the front then wait in the middle section for your food. It takes a bit of time but it's fresh and authentic. I got a wonton noodle soup with duck ($12.95) and a Hong Kong style milk tea ($3.50). Had to try the classics to see if this paired with what I know growing up. It's legit! So glad to find this flavor of home here. The broth was satisfying and flavorful. The wontons consist of real shrimp pieces and they certainly didn't skimp on those portions. Several pieces of veggies with generous pieces of duck and gasp, an egg. Not many restaurants who serve this dish add an egg (without an extra charge, too). The tea was good, too. Though I could go with less ice! Good amount of seating towards the back. Clean and soothing color scheme. Relaxing space to eat your food and go. They offer a few sauces in the back. Finish your meal and bring your tray to the center. While some of their menu options can be a bit steep in price, it's nice to find authentic cuisine here in Flatiron. Willing to try a few more items the next time I visit. read more

Grabbed some char siew Bao and salted egg baked buns before heading to the skating rink in Bryant park. Totally legit. Returned for lunch 3 hours later. The dishes do not disappoint. New dim sum spot that has recently opened up in the area, challenging Awesum Dimsum. So does Sam over here have a competitive advantage over their nemesis a few blocks down? Dim Sum Sam offers congee and noodle soups, two things Awesum Dimsum does not offer. Sam has a wider selection of dim sum items and Sam also offer BBQ items such as pork, duck, and chicken. Essentially Dim Sum Sam is a lot more authentic while Awesum Dimsum is a white washed version of dim sum. Of course, if you want the authentic experience at much cheaper prices, you go to Chinatown. But if you're lazy and willing to pay the premium for convenience, I recommend this spot. Below is the list that my gf and I tried when they opened up during their grand opening week and we enjoyed each item: Shrimp Dumpling SH Juice ($6) Pork & Crabmeat Dumpling ($6) Crispy Shrimp Roll ($6) Seafood Rice Noodle Roll ($6) Pork & Thousand Year Egg Congee ($9) Shrimp & Pork Wonton Noodle Soup ($11) read more

Was excited to check out this place since this is one of the few dim sum places in the area that's opened for breakfast. I ordered a siu mai and HK milk tea. It was $11 so definitely not a cheap breakfast!. The siu mai was freshly made and tasted delicious. The milk tea is not quite authentic HK style, but it's about as close as it gets in midtown NYC. The ordering process was easy but the wait was longer than expected. There were only two customers ahead of me and it took about 10 minutes to get my order. If you're eating in, there are plenty of seating in the back. All in all I was happy with my experience. Will definitely come back and try the other dim sum offerings. read more

Extremely lazy person at counter. The menu above is all over the place..most of it written in Chinese..small print it has dish in English. There 80 items listed on board and 70% written in Chinese. The place is bigger than I was expecting when seeing it from outside. We came at peak lunch time so the restaurant was quite full and I was a bit disappointed that the food didn't come in steamers but they probably had to use them for other orders. The congee is a good portion and between two of us we couldn't finish it so we still had about one bowl left to take home. The dumplings all were good portions as well and the chili oil was sooo good! I took some home in a small container, they'll give you a lid if you ask for one at the counter! The egg tart crust was buttery and flakey and the inside was a little jiggly and not too sweet. The coffee milk tea was way too sweet with regular sugar and ice so I would recommend getting 50% sugar, the lemon iced tea with regular sugar and ice was perfectly refreshing and didn't taste too sweet at all. This is a place I would definitely stop by if I'm craving dim sum and in the area. read more

We went to an event/ food fair in Madison square park but it was so packed we left. we were tired, hot & hungry & looking for any food we could get our hands on. Then we saw this bright, airy & clean looking resto we decided to try. We didn't have a high expectation coming in. But was pleasantly surprice over all. The price is okey, the food is good, the waiting time is reasonable& the people were friendly. unlike places in chinatown, they are not rushing you vacate your seat & leave right away. The cashier was so incredibly helpful when I asked what vegetarian-friendly options there were and I ended up deciding on two types of steamed buns to go: the vegetable and the spicy mushroom. My only real qualm was that the spicy mushroom really lacked the kick I was hoping for. It came with a chili oil that I thought might help, but though the flavor was good, it wasn't spicy at all. I will definitely be back to dine-in and try the other veggie options like the scallion pancakes and rice dish! read more

We should have came here a long long time ago! The first time this place came up, we didn't go. But when Dim Sum Sam was along the way one day as a quick bite, we finally got to experience the gem we initially missed out on. The etiquette was order-at-the-cashier-and-pick-up-your-food style. There's even an automated speaker announcing your order number. Note "Order ___, please prepare" means pick up your food! The Shrimp & Pork Wonton Soup ($8.95) was deeelish! We paid $10 for some wontons elsewhere, but these were slightly cheaper for the same great taste! I could taste the black pepper seasoning on it, with a mouthful of bouncy shrimp chew. The veggies also tasted so sweet in the soup. The soup was more oilier than I would have liked, and not as flavorful. I wish there was a vinegar condiment to add some flare. The BBQ Pork Rice Noodle Roll ($6.50) was ok, given it was nothing special. The pork pieces were tiny. If you're feeling like something is lacking, it's probably the soy sauce. There's a condiments counter! Maybe I'm just excited I found this flavor again, but the Iced Hong Kong Style Milk Tea ($4.25) was the best surprise and what made the meal for me, albeit overpriced. The milk tea gave me flashbacks to old packaging $2 bubble tea from my childhood. It was not bitter, like I thought usual HK styles are. Either way, this was a must try! Dim Sum Sam unlocked some nostalgia in me for how far bubble tea has come. And an eagerness to visit Hong Kong! I'd definitely come back to try more options. read more

I thought we could get really good Peking duck here but was disappointed. The way it was cut, you get many little bits of bone in your meat. The outside wasn't crispy at all and needed a little salt. They just pulled it from a refrigerator, I thought it would be fresher. It was cold inside and some pieces were lukewarm. They unapologetically re-microwaved it and there were some hot pieces and some still cool pieces. What a bummer read more

I love food from Hong Kong, so when we stumbled across the roasted duck hanging by the window, we ran inside. We came in really hungry, so it was nice how quick the food was prepared and ready. We were able to order from a detailed menu with pictures. There were also yummy treats and snacks in the display case. Maybe it was because I was starving and had been really missing food from our time in Hong Kong, but I had higher expectations. Still, what we got was pretty good. We got the bao bun which was a little too dry for our liking. However, my BBQ roast duck noodle soup was so tasty. I wish the noodles had more flavor, but the duck and bok choy were the perfect amount of sweet. The roasted duck skin was so juicy and delicious. I kept eating my meal even when I was full. read more

Over three visits have had the two meats over rice combo, which includes greens and pickled egg. Have had the roast duck, roast pork, pork belly, and rice chicken so far. Impressed by the flavorings and moistness of all. The rice is well cooked too. That said, I don't think I'll be ordering the duck again. Although the meat itself was tender and tasty, there wasn't much of it and the skin was soft. Also, I now ask to have the tasty sauces (one soy sauce based, one ginger based) on the side to allow the subtle tastes of the meats to shine. Pleasant staff and very nicely designed space in the back to eat in too! read more

Two weeks ago I had such a tasty lunch of roast duck on rice with choy fun that I decided to have it again but with noodle soup. I asked for the duck to be kept separate so it wouldn't get soggy. When I saw the dish I was upset as the duck was 99% fatty. Where were the pieces with meat on them? Then the soup had a smell which was not appetizing. How was this made? The thin noodles? Instant! An awful lunch. read more

Holy unexpectedly delicious dim sum, Batman. I had to pick up an internet order from Home Depot, and was walking from the 6. I usually get dim sum from one of the Chinatowns, but the meat in the window looked right, so we tried it. The Peking duck sandwich(bun) was great, and the pork belly quite good. The Shui Mai were quite nice, although the shrimp was a ground powder, and added little to the dish. The shrimp spring rolls were absolutely delicious, but were little bigger than a cigarillo. Now, to both of us, the biggest shock was how delicious the roast pork rice noodle roll was, it is also absolutely huge. The prices are slightly higher than Chinatown, and, as they make the dishes fresh, it is slower, but, it is a great alternative when in the area. read more

The cashier takes order very efficiently and food is prepared quickly too. It's a self-serve place. Once your order number is called, you pick up your food tray at the front then you can dine inside. Today I got seafood rice noodles and one BBQ pork bun. The rice noodles ($6.50) is so tasty and it included decent amount of shrimps and scallops. The bun was so so. Hong Kong local here. When I miss home SO much and this is the place I go; not chinatown. Ironically, I haven't had their famous dim sum or roasted things, but I came here for all the treats and drinks. Maybe that's because those are harder to find authentic ones in NYC. Especially the milk tea! I'm a daily milk tea drinker, so much so that I bought a tea base from Hong Kong and shopped like 10lbs to the US just for my daily use. But sadly, even NYC Chinatown doesn't have great milk tea and some places even use tea bags (?!!!) Instead of brewing in a pot with a bag of fine tea. And one place in Chinatown do their tea right but the flavor is not there. You see, I know what a good one should tastes like and so mediocre also doesn't do it for me. Well, I'm glad to say this place GOT IT!!! The aroma of the floral Ceylon tea, and then the thick, creamy texture base with a heavy but not bitter strong black tea after taste. Wow, I'm impressed. Hot or iced both they did great. The iced one actually reminded me of a place in HK central area. So so similar! Ok sorry I know I'm really specific with my milk tea but I do think my people need to know where to go if they also miss HK style milk tea. Lol but I'm done ok, now to the treats. Egg tarts, bolo bun, charsiu bun, etc. So many little treats on the go. I like the egg tarts the most out of all those treats. It's great but I prefer cookie dough instead of flaky dough but that's just my preference. Other little baos and buns are good too! But not that much that I'd say you can only get it here. These types of treats are indeed easy to find anywhere around NYC. (BUT MILK TEA I promise this is my last time :P) Have to mention the customer service is always great. Polite and nice, sometimes even do the extra miles to pack it up nicely for me. Plus they got a usable bathroom that's usually clean! I love it! I highly recommend if you don't wanna wait long lines in Chinatown, and have great service AND quality food and authentic drinks! read more
