It has been reimagined by the next generation of the family as a vibrant reboot that honors tradition while bringing fresh energy to Chinatown/North Beach. I came back tonight to sit down for a full meal, and the house was completely full--I love seeing them do so well! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by one of the owners, Eugene. He was super friendly, welcoming, and focused on making sure we got seated. His hospitality genuinely can't be beaten anywhere; he immediately made us feel like family. Thankfully, a couple of tables were finishing up their checks, and he had us seated in no time. We ordered the wonton noodle soup, seafood fried noodles, and garlic Chinese spinach, and the food came out fast! Everything tasted great, and unlike so many restaurants nowadays that serve individual-sized portions under the guise of "family style," 606's portions are huge and wonderfully generous. Wonton Noodle Soup: The broth was flavorful without being overly salty, and the wontons were packed with plump, tender shrimp--they definitely don't skimp on ingredients! Seafood Fried Noodles: Executed perfectly with just the right amount of savory sauce so the noodles retained that satisfying crispy, crunchy texture. Garlic Chinese Spinach: Cooked just right--not too soft and not undercooked. I'm so glad we came back to sit down and dine in. Not only do Eugene and his team make you feel right at home, but the food is fantastic, hearty, and full of heart. Highly recommend!

We got the free peanuts and cucumber salad first- so flavorful and a nice way to whet our appetite. The scallop vermicelli was SO buttery and flavorful. I wanted another order!! The claypot rice came steaming hot and full of meats! Get something to cut it with! The black bean clams were delicious but a tad salty so it's nice to have with the claypot, or even an order of veggies and plain rice! We ended our meal with shaved ice that was layered with black bean, custard, and boba! So refreshing and a perfect end! I would come back 10000%

Anyway, having tried it, I can say it was good, but not so good that I'd expend that much energy to secure the reservation. Have to say, service was really great. Servers were attentive without being overbearing, which is always welcome. We ordered several dishes and dined, as they suggested, family style. To start, we were given two complimentary dishes, the roasted peanuts and the smashed cucumbers; both were nice appetizers. We ordered the Chiu Chow green beans, the Mongolian beef noodles, the claypot rice with lop cheung and bacon, the salt 'n peppa prawns, and the whole fried petrale sole, the last two being on the day's "specials" board. The winning dish was definitely the green beans. All the food was good, but seemed to be a bit overly salted and highly spiced. The piece of beef I had from the Mongolian beef noodles was tender, but one of my friends thought her piece was a bit tough and too chewy; we all thought the beef could have been cut into smaller or thinner pieces. We also shared two desserts since it was a birthday celebration (there are only three options offered). We had the red bean shaved ice and the mango pudding. Both were good (not "oh, boy, yummy" good, but good). Nice to try. The price wasn't outrageous ($200 including tax and tip), but I think this will be a "been there, done that" experience for me unless a friend absolutely wants to go again.

And - pro tip - you can call ahead and have them add you to the list before you get there if you get lucky and talk to the right person. Inside, it's crowded, loud, and pretty basic. But that's part of the experience, and decor isn't particularly important when the table is covered with delicious food! Definitely worth a stop if you're looking for classic Chinese food in San Francisco in the heart of Chinatown. Just show up hungry and be prepared to wait a bit.

It is the perfect, straightforward spot to grab a quick, cheap bite when the craving hits. I am already planning my next visit!

Our menu included Abalone/Sea cucumber soup, Salt & Pepper Crab, Peking Duck, Honey Walnut Prawns, Baked Chilean Sea Bass (just melted in my mouth!!!), Sea Scallops & Steak Cubes, Soy sauce chicken, Virginia Ham w/tender greens, Salted fish & chicken fried rice, and ended with the Almond Jelly with red bean cubes. The food was epic, and the service genuinely friendly and available. The wait staff never hovered but were quick to remove and replace dirty dishes and refill our water glasses. The duck was well seasoned, juicy, and had plentiful meat without being overly fatty or skinny, My favorite part about good roast duck is the skin, and I loved how it was nice and thin and well marinated without a massive layer of fat underneath as they sometimes do. It did have the gamey taste of pork a bit but I didn't mind since the textural experience was so wonderful. Situated on the second floor, Hong Kong Clay Pot Restaurant, is elevated above the rest, literally and figuratively with their quality of food and service, high churn and freshness, and comfort in dining space. Upon climbing the carpeted steps up to the restaurant, we were greeted by the staff and were seated by the window. Despite being located in a building with no air conditioning, the heat doesn't linger much here when the windows are open feeding in the fresh bay air. Furthermore, the spacing between tables is efficient allowing them to pack tables for large and small groups alike but still have enough room to eat comfortably. We were given menus and offered tea and waters to get us started. The menu is quite extensive beyond clay pot dishes as it includes many popular favorites typical of Chinese restaurants (noodle and rice dishes, chicken/beef/pork, and veggies) but also eclectic options like frog legs. For those looking to quench a thirst, they have soft drinks out of cans, bottled juices, beers, and wines. The menu is full of pictures so you'll get a nice visual of what you'll expect to feast on. Naturally, we got a few things as were famished from the day full of adventure. Salt & Pepper Frog - these crispy and meaty bits are lips smacking good; they're great starters for the meal as well as an introduction to some exotic food Snow Pea Sprouts with Garlic - cooked really well with large chunks of garlic. Seasoned well but it does have a bit more oil than your typical home cooking - so delicious though! Dried Bean Curd Lamb Clay Pot - protein rich dish with succulent chunks of lamb and tofu slathered in a sauce in search of a bowl of rice to pair with. Just one of these can easily feed two! Beef Stew Clay Pot with Bean Curd & Mushroom - juicy pieces of beef and braised tofu and mushrooms hit home with a nice balance of protein and veggies. This hearty dish will fill you up. Steamed rice - nothing special, but it does cost extra and doesn't come with any of the clay pots. You're going to want some so make sure you get a bowl or two. The service is exceptional here compared with other sit downs of this caliber in Chinatown. The staff members are personable, quick to serve and refill beverages, and accessible when the need arises. It does get busy here so the small staff may have trouble during rushes. Given the older building, naturally the small bathroom is expected. Surprisingly though, they have free WiFi here so I suppose for those looking for a pit stop in your city trek to regroup or for the locals looking to camp a bit for work, you've come to a great place to grab a bite too! Overall, Hong Kong Clay Pot represents the Hong Kong cuisine exceptionally well and is accessible, affordable, and delicious. The menu covers a variety of items and will be sure to satisfy everyone in your party. Everything is made fresh and is balanced in flavor, texture, and nutrition. Tourist or local, you'll be welcomed with hospitality. Each meal is meant for family style and will be sure to fill each stomach up while encouraging community building during your dining experience.
