My cousin is always getting dim sum and their BBQ pork chow mein from this spot. It's a small takeout place, and one day when I couldn't decide what to eat, I decided to try the BBQ pork chow mein. I ordered it spicy, and the lady told me it already came spicy. Personally, I didn't find it spicy at all -- I think they use chili paste because you can taste the vinegar. Still, I was really impressed with the portion size for under $10. My husband and I shared it, and there was even enough left over for my cousin. We ordered it again another time, and I just asked for the BBQ pork chow mein, assuming it automatically came spicy since that's what I was told before. Unfortunately, it actually doesn't come spicy lol. Either way, the chow mein tastes good. I've also tried the siu mai and ha gow. I didn't really like the siu mai -- not sure if it's from the basket they store it in, but both my husband and I noticed a smoky, slightly burnt taste. The ha gow was decent though. They can get pretty busy, so I usually try to call my order in ahead of time. One time I called in for dim sum, but they didn't pack it until I arrived. Another time I called ahead for chow mein and still ended up waiting quite a while once I got there. One thing that annoyed me a little: I asked for soy sauce and chili oil, then noticed they also had chili paste and asked for some of that too -- and the lady took away the chili oil! Like, really? My husband and I were staying at an AirBnB just down the street from this dim sum place and decided to check them out on a Tuesday. We came in right at opening (9 am). When we walked in, we were greeted by an employee behind the counter and waited for our turn (there was already 1 person inside. We also saw plenty of people coming in after us too). We ended up ordering: Tuesday Lunch Special: Chicken w/ Black Bean Sauce Over Rice $7.25 prior to tax- Even at 9 am, the lunch special was available. The portion of this lunch special is excellent, can easily feed 2-3 people. My husband and I both really enjoyed the chicken with vegetables (onions, bell peppers) and black bean sauce. Perfect with the steamed white rice. 2 shrimp dumpling, $1 each, prior to tax- the har gow or shrimp dumpling was pretty small. Also it was interesting to find that there are nuts inside the dumpling, something that I have never had before. I wasn't too sure if it was chestnuts in it or not. I did like it but think it is too small for the price. 2 pork shiu mai, $1 each, prior to tax- These shiu mai are a good size for the price. And the price itself is pretty good. But the taste of the shiu mai was just okay. Honestly I have had better. 1 steam BBQ pork bun, $1.20, prior to tax- While we waited for our lunch special order, we sat down at the one table that is set up to sit and eat. My husband was so hungry that he decided to eat this right away. I didn't have any but he did like it. And inside, it looks like there was a good amount of barbecue pork inside. 1 fried taro dumpling, $1.10, prior to tax- I truly love wu gok, or fried taro dumpling. There are not that many places that make them in general (this is coming from someone who lives in Southern California) and so when I saw these, I knew I had to get one. But really wished I had gotten more. I know these dumpling take longer to make, which is why there are far and few places that make these now. This dumpling was delicious. The texture of the dumpling shell (mashed taro and flour) was excellent, crispy and honestly was not too oily. They serve excellent dim sum but you have to get there early to get a good selection. They serve until everything is gone. You will not be disappointed in the selection or prices. It's one of the best kept secrets in Sacramento . I ordered rice noodles with chicken. I thought I was ordering the thick rice noodles like they have at ABC Bakery. I should have known when they made it fresh. It was actually vermicelli type rice noodles, except thinner. It didn't have much flavor unless you add sauce, it was well prepared though. Service was good, interior is no frills, one table a couple of chairs. Everything was to go, doesn't look like they're encouraging you to sit down and eat, more of place to sit and wait. They also have cherng fun (Rolled rice noodles with scallions and bacon bits). Also have Bock Tong Go (sticky, spongy sweet treats). The 3 are very Cantonese and not found in many places. So, glad to find food from Toy Shan. Their regular menu items also delicious. Very authentic flavors. Good sign of authenticity are the customers. Many aunts, uncles and cousins waiting patiently. This is my go to spot for dim sum! Recommend to go early, to get the best quality. They serve deep fried pork dumplings that are to die for! They only do one batch most times so first come first serve. If you come after me, I'm pretty much taking what's remaining. Now sometimes they're cold cause they aren't kept under a heat lamp, I'd definitely warm them up before eating for the best taste. Sometimes I'm late and left with whatever's left and usually go with their $6.75 lunch special for the day. Yes less than $7 for a giant rice plate made to order, really affordable and tasty. Today I was able to get everything we wanted. Pork steamed buns, steamed shrimp dumplings, steamed pork dumplings, and the fried pork dumplings. Sometimes the lady taking orders sounds rude and very cheap when it comes to the sauce packets but the food makes up for it. The har gow cost $1 a piece and was average. The bbq pork bun was very traditional. Everything is made fresh here. If they run out, you wait 20 minutes for the next batch to steam. Came in on a Sunday morning and was able to get some of our favorite dim sum items. The siu mai was good and pretty big compared to others I've had but the flavor wasn't better. The har gow was alright but failed to "WOW" me. Prices are pretty cheap for the current economy so that does give the food a plus. There was only one person at the front which may affect service times during peak but there wasn't that many people there at the time so nothing ti complain about that. This is an absolutely totally cheap walk up window to-go kind of Chinesefood and dumpling joint. It's a kind of place where you can eat lunch for $3 to $8 so I'm giving a good stars. Also I've never had a problem with MSG here which I normally have a bad reaction to. I love to get their lunch specials my favorite is the Kung pow dishes, but all of them are decent and I order them when I want a lot of food for cheap. Usually I just pop in for the cheung fun rice noodle rolled with onions and Char-siu pork which is cooked absolutely perfectly and is my favorite dim sum dish served here and cost $1. The shu mai, pork dumpling is super tasty and has little bits of waterchestnut in it, which is my favorite way to have it prepared, also sells for $1. Most items are average to good but you can't beat the price. We just ordered beef chow fun, a tamale, 3 buns, and 6 dumplings for $22. I can easily spend that at Taco Bell and not get as much. With the cost of food prices rising, this is a good value and why I'm bumping a star. Oh and like a donut shop, come early to get the better options. Located inside a shopping center, parking is very convenient. Came in for a quick Monday lunch and there was a short line. There's only one person working the front, but the wait didn't take long. He was very thorough with the orders and receipt provides breakdown to ensure accuracy. Interior has a few tables for dine in, light and bright, simple and clean. This place is not just a pastry shop, there are also wonton soup and noodles on the menu. Best thing I ate here was the egg tart. Very custardy and flakey crust. Not too sweet, which I enjoy. Shrimp rolls were great too, but were pre boxed, so it's not warm. Big shrimp pieces and noodle roll was slightly chewy as it should be. Sweet soy sauce was little bit salty, so I used just a bit. Chive dumplings were delightful, very juicy when eaten hot. Great texture and chive flavor, but could use a little more chives. Steamed pork buns were great, filled with savory and sweet gooey pork filling. The baked items were a little too stiff for me. Tried the baked bbq pork bun and pineapple bun. I wished the bread part was a little fluffier. It's called a pineapple bun because it resembles an actual pineapple, but to my surprise, there were chunks of pineapples in the pastry. Traditional pineapple buns don't have actual pineapples. I think it made the custard a little too wet to my liking, so I had mixed feelings about this item. On an escape-the-house-drive, hunger pains hit and I wanted some dim sum to go. I remembered years ago that we had stopped by here but couldn't remember how it was. We dropped in just before 3pm on a Saturday. The selection wasn't huge. There were Har Gow, Sui Mai, Pot Stickers, Baked Pork Buns, and a few other things available. I was only interested in steamed items and pot stickers. She wanted a Pork Bun so we ordered a Baked Pork Bun. The food in general was okay. The skin on the Har Gow was thicker than I prefer. I can't really comment accurately on the flavors. She poured hot oil over everything while I was driving so I couldn't taste much after the first bite. My first bite of Har Gow made me think of white pepper but it could have been the oil. I'll have to drop by again when I'm in the area for another taste. The Siu Mai were good and the Pot Sticker was the best of the three because I've always loved lots of garlic and cabbage. I'm going to give an overall rating of 3 for now until I'm able to try them again. One thing to note is that toward the end of their day, the selection is smaller than usual. read more
