I would probably rate this as more of a three and a half stars. We originally found Bodega Bay Best…read moreVaction Rentals by looking at houses on VRBO.com and chose a house that according to their description was minutes from the beach. Once my mother had already confirmed the house by sending in the money and we got the address we saw that it would be quite a walk to the beach and we would have to cross Highway 1 with two small children. She called BBBVR directly and asked just how many minutes the walk would be and was told about 15-20 minutes. My mother asked if they had any houses in our price and size range that were closer. She sent over three options and the first one we chose she wrote back and said that the owners were choosing to stay there and we would have to pick another. Strike two. Finally we settled on Ocean Song, which was only three houses away from Highway 1 with the beach just on the other side. None of the options we were offered were without crossing that very busy road. The house, Ocean Song, was listed as kid and dog friendly. While the house was lovely, with a gorgeous view and the right size for what we needed, I would say that it was more dog than kid friendly. The kitchen was quite small, so they had all of the dishware on a rack on the floor next to the dining bar. This was very tempting for my 22 month old to want to play with. Also they had the supplies for starting a fire in the fireplace, including matches and a metal poker in a basket on the floor. They have two showers and no bathtub, although one shower had a handheld shower head, so we made do to get our kids clean. The house itself is an updated 1970's house with lots of picture windows for viewing the crashing waves below. The bathrooms and kitchen have newer countertops and appliances. The house is eclectically decorated and has all the modern conviences (cable TV, cordless phones and wireless internet). The porch is very pretty, has lots of seating and even has a small firepit. The garage, which is strangely accessed through the master bedroom closet, has a gas grill and a full sized washer and dryer. This would be the perfect house for a family with older or no children who wish to travel with their dog. One thing that slightly grossed us out was that it smelled of dog immediately upon entering and there were obvious spots on the carpet near the front door. We aren't really dog people, so we would probably prefer someplace a little less pet friendly. One note about accessing Portuguese Beach from the house. There is a path directly across from the street the house is on, but it is very steep. If you walk a little down Highway 1 to your left you will come to a path with wooden stairs set into the hillside, which is much easier and safer. However, be careful when you are walking back to the house. Walk to the actual street and don't take any side trails. As we found out one of the trails leads directly into the backyard of the house just across from Ocean Song, but when you try to cross the field you will find a steep gully filled with poison ivy and unless you go back through the neighbor's yard it is a one mile plus walk around the gully back to the house. What should have taken us five minutes ended up taking an hour simply because we were eager to get off the side of Highway 1 and the cars that speed along that expanse. None of the options were fun with small impulsive children. On our second day we just decided to drive to Doran Beach since the waves are smaller and safer for young children anyway.

Luis, the manager at the front office, provided us a warm welcoming and he gave us a tour of the property. We liked Luis for his good customer service and his honesty. Yes, there a few things that weren't perfect, but as long as it was functional and still in working order was ok with us. You will see photos from other reviews , and they have made improvements and/ or corrections based on those complaints. For example, our dinner table had some bubbles on the top in the paint. It was still functional and we ate dinner using the table without any problem. Their TV system is set up for streaming. The bed was comfortable and the master bedroom was nice with a big screen tv and dressers for him and her. The lighting system is limited, but there's room for improvement. Our room came with a refrigerator, stove, microwave and keurig coffee maker all functional. I spoke with Luis and I gave him some recommendations how they can improve the property. Luis took my recommendations by writing them down. This location has great views of the bay. And it's close to everything. Plenty of property to walk your pet and they have a pool table and a swimming pool for some fun. this hotel has a lot of potential and as long as they continue to improve their property, this will be a great place to stay. We will be back in the future.

As a 3-star…read moreboutique hotel actively working to rebrand/ update itself it suited our needs but could still use some work/ minor tweaks and adjustments. We recently spent 6 days there celebrating our 2 year anniversary! I booked one of the bigger luxury suites with them that had a king size bed, wall fireplace (electric not gas), free standing bathtub and an oceanside view. In no particular order here are my suggestions/ critiques: - As one of the only pet friendly hotels in the area (we brought our dog with us) you should have bowls for food/ water and a bed already in your pet friendly rooms. I had to ask the front desk for a bowl. - Toilet paper and tissues should be abundant with multiples of each already in each room. 2 small packs of tissue and three rolls of toilet paper isn't enough for two people. I had to ask the front desk multiple times for more toilet paper and tissues (mildly embarrassing for me as a guest but also a hassle and since I was on vacation I feel like I shouldn't have had to). - The free standing tub is too small (could only fit one of us) and awkwardly shaped (super deep but not long enough to spread out). The bathroom in this suite was easily big enough for either a two person free standing tub or even a jet tub. Also because it's free standing there was nothing underneath it to catch excess water/ overspill resulting in water all over the bathroom floor. A pan underneath the tub or something similar would have helped. Great idea in theory and a nice luxury amenity/ aesthetic but practically it doesn't really work. The wand feature it had was a nice addition as well as the wooden tray for soaps, a glass of wine, etc but gets in the way of the spout so we ended up not using it. - The bathroom was pretty big with space for a closet as well (which we didn't end up using) and I think that space could have been utilized better by having an additional rack or table for storage, not only there but in the bathroom itself (more often than not I had to move things to the counter where the sink was because that was the only usable space off the floor). - The vanity/ countertops should have had two sinks installed instead of only one. - The towels could have been better quality. - There were shallow scratch marks on the floor and walls. - The mini patio off the hotel room was a nice addition as well but the small table and two chairs on it were in rough shape (slightly rusted, peeling paint, and no cushions on the seats). - No complimentary breakfast but there is a small Keurig coffee machine in the room, a microwave and a mini fridge. If you're not going to have a complimentary breakfast at least consider partnering with some of the local cafes and restaurants that do serve breakfast (offer a slight discount and send them customers). - The on-site amenities are bare and lackluster (a common room on a second floor with places to sit and chat, play pool/ board games, watch TV, bird watch or just watch the bay/ sunset/ sunrise), an outdoor and gated jacuzzi/ space area and a water/ ice machine. All of these require leaving your room (the hotel itself is made up of multiple buildings/ outdoor spaces, it's not one giant building). These are all in my opinion simply suggestions/ ideas to consider to bring that sense of luxury to your hotel and to your guests. However, overall it was a wonderful experience that just missed the mark in terms of what I consider a "luxurious experience."

We stayed in the Seal's unit, which is the largest of the 3. For the price it's tough to beat the location. The cabin sits on piers directly over the bay when the tide is up. You do get a bit of road noise due to the location directly off highway 1, but late at night, the road is not well traveled. The unit is cleaned by tenant's so it's not professionally cleaned. Still, it was not too bad. The unit could benefit from a new bed and perhaps some updated dishware. It would really pop with some new furnishings, but then the price would likely increase. Sitting out in the hot tub on a star filled night makes these issues are little more excusable. We had some outstanding food at Terrapin Creek Cafe and Spud Point Crab Co. If I have time, I may post reviews of these, but they hardly need the pub.

We got to see an amazing sunset from the balcony and seals swimming just offshore. It was nice to have a kitchen to make a simple breakfast. You do need to bring your own linens and towels, but that was not a problem for us. You have to clean the unit before you leave, but it did not take more than an hour. The only negatives for us were the shower was somewhat clogged and we weren't able to enjoy the hot tub because it needed cleaning and was slimy. We booked on extremely short notice, so we can't fault the owner for not having time to check on the unit before our arrival. He was easy to work with and responded very quickly to phone calls. We had hoped to use the available kayak, but ran short on time. If you are not looking for a 5 star, fancy hotel, this is your place.
