I've been going to DICK'S TRUE Value for over 20 years and I'm really glad this place is in the area. They usually have most things that I need if not, they'll usually get it! I would highly suggest supporting this small local fitness as opposed to go to the big box stores if you can avoid it. Most of the employees have good knowledge if not, they usually refer to somebody in the store that does have the knowledge for the items that you need. Nice, well-stocked neighborhood hardware store with friendly service. I was looking for a tiny, weird little halogen lightbulb for a light whose bulb probably hadn't been replaced in thirty years. I was afraid I'd have to replace the whole light fixture because it was such a weird bulb. Home Depot didn't have it, but Dicks did! Yay! Oh, and compared to Home Depot, it was super easy to find someone to help me. My entryway is illuminated again, and I'm a happy customer. read more

Ran in here in a hurry... and there's only a few reasons you run into a hardware store in a hurry, right? Anyway, got myself to the toilet plunger section and selected 2, as the toilet needing service had an odd opening. Asked the salesperson if the funky accordion plunger (the more expensive)could be returned if the tag was not removed or used. He told me that they do not take plungers as returns (honestly does make sense) but that as fancy as the accordion looks, it wasn't the best for a toilet, and the plastic it's made from is cheap. He also showed me a feature of the cheaper, normal looking plunger that I was unaware of, made specifically to help create a seal for toilet plunging. I ended up purchasing the normal plunger and rushed back to put it to use. SUCCESS!!!! Very happy for the salesperson saving me money. read more

Bought 4 metal spring clamps. They were the wrong size, brought them back the next day with receipt. The guy said hold on and got his manager. I looked at the sign that said "returns within the 30 days". Manager came over looked at them said "we consider these tools. no exchanges" WALKED AWAY. And so did the original guy. Nothing else. Just left me standing there. Lost a customer for what $10??? read more

We had a bad experience with Banner Carpet in Torrance and came here for DIY materials. Our list was comprised of what we saw on online DIY videos and remodeling blogs so we were a bit unsure, even our friend who did his own floors had trouble remembering certain small details. However the staff here is really friendly and are real good at what they do. I swear it felt like we were having a conversation with Tim the Toolman Taylor, sorry I forgot your real name, but thank you for guiding us and being patient, we really appreciate it. This is a great neighborhood spot with nice knowledgeable people working there. The prices seem reasonable too when we compared online after getting home. I recommend this place if you have a home project you're working on and need some advice with a real person rather than online tutorials. read more

These guys really live up to their name. I needed to get a key copied and brought it in at 5:40. Got to the key copying station and asked the guy if I could still get in before it closed up. He said not until 8am tomorrow. I tried to reason with him for a bit that the sign I was staring at said they should still be doing keys. I usually tip a buck a key. He could have really help me out by making a copy of my key. This would be fair if the entire conversation wasn't over and done with by 5:44, a minute before they're supposedly closed at! Even though I pleaded with the guy and told him I'm a regular shopper there, he could not be bothered. Last time I'll ever go into this place. That was the opposite of customer service. read more

Our latest apartment's almost Dickensian management company is neither tenant responsive nor supportive. It can be a huge pain for us at times, but out of necessity, we've really had to learn to DIY the small things and take care of fix-it issues ourselves when we can no longer wait. I'm not a fan of big box stores, so Dick's True Value Hardware is where I go to for most of our temporary fixes and household repair needs. The store is located on the south side of Venice, between Ocean View and Grand View, and parking is street, although there are at least a couple of free lots within walking distance nearby, including the Grandview Post Office, and Chase/Mitsuwa's plaza on Centinela. If you can't get to the store by closing at 6 PM, it opens up early enough the next day at 7 AM. Sales are frequent, and prices generally comparable to, or better than, what you'd find online. Best of all, if they don't have an item I'm looking for, helpful store clerks are happy to order it for me or provide a suggestion as to where I can find it elsewhere in the city. Second set of keys, vertical blind tabs, generic bone white spray paint, aerosol lubricant, food grade boric acid, air conditioner filters, gorilla glue, silicone sealant, faucet parts, plumbing tape, and lye micro beads are just a few of the convenient things I've picked up here over the years. It's a small store, and I don't know Dick :P, but I keep coming back because the products, sizes, and services here obviously keep L.A.'s forsaken apartment tenants, like me, in mind! read more

Plus you'll get something that's hard to find at the big box store: knowledgeable help from an employee. Even the most carefree kind of guy sometimes needs to to get his hardware on. So it was on a balmy Saturday morning that I dropped into Dicks (not gonna lie, the name leapt out of my MapQuest at me) for some of life's essentials: rope, zip ties, and masking tape. I was blown away at how friendly the staff were - non judgmental folk who asked the right questions (and even more importantly - didn't ask the wrong ones, am I right fellas?). Seriously the kind of place I could see myself hanging out in, chewing the fat, and swapping notes about the best ways to skin game (and what with). 4/5 stars - the only thing missing from a perfect score is I couldn't find choloroform anywhere - but aside from that minor gripe - two big thumbs from this satisfied hardware aficionado. read more

When you purchase anything that looks like it was returned do not buy it. This store will price and sell items that are missing instructions and parts that are loose in the box. I was told that they did not return tools but was going to give me a store credit . I have been loyal to this store for many years.I have often said in store that would rather give them my patronage over Home Depot not far away. However things took an unpleasant turn when the owner was insinuating that I had used the tool and was lying. Ok so I took a couple weeks to return as many urgent things demanded immediate attention. He was skeptical the minute I showed him the well worn box it came in.I'm not telling you not to shop there but keep that in mind what is wrong with this situation. It wasn't about the money.It was about customer treatment and basically treating me like a liar and a thief. Buyer beware. It is clear he simply doesn't care how he treats his loyal customers. THEY'VE GOT IT! No one in WLA had the Toto toilet flapper (blue) but Dick's TruValue did! In fact, their inventory is surprisingly broad. They are likely to have most household items you might need, from furnace filters to garden supplies. I tried B&B earlier and they look like they are going out of business, with a third of their many shelves empty. So Dick's is now my go-to hardware supply store. This is a great neighborhood hardware store! The space is small but filled with everything you probably need. There are meters along Venice where you can park, but caution that the green meters mean 15 minute parking. But that's probably all you need to get in and out of here! This is a great place to get keys made. Typical keys are about .50 cents a piece, but they do have specialty keys (think Disney, Lakers, etc but sadly, no UCLA) for slightly more. Head straight to the back to the key counter and they will make them in a matter of minutes. You can sign up for a Rewards Card when you check out--DO IT. You will be sent great emails (but not too often) with coupons. For every 250 points you accumulate, you are mailed a gift certificate. read more
