I purchased a knife sharpening whetstone at Anzen Hardware. I hadn't a clue how to use it. Takatani san gave me a thorough demonstration under water and I have been sharpening my ikebana scissors and knives successfully since then...Cannot wait for you to return!!!

Nice mom-and-pop hardware store, literally. The elderly Japanese couple who runs the store was very nice and conversant. Space is small and cramped inside, but when we went, we were the only customers in the store. Definitely not for claustrophobic people. They have a nice selection of hardware, tools and gardening implements. Especially Japanese garden tools that can only be found elsewhere at specialty farm supply stores. Oh, and seeds and some kitchen supplies too, including rice cookers. Also picked up a Japanese rodent trap (around $30; pretty reasonable) that we'll have to set up and try; Nori-san even gave us a nice demo on how to use it! They can copy keys too.

Hubby needed to find binchotan (log-shaped charcoal) for our future konro grill, and Anzen Hardware seemed to be the only place to better charcoal versus other options in the area. The binchotan quality does vary depending on the wood being used and where it was created. Hubby was able to get a few pounds of it, paid by credit card, and we were on our merry way. Anzen Hardware does have other items in its store, such as stuff for the garden, general hardware you can find at Home Depot, some grilling/cooking tools, kitchen knives, some basic stationery, etc. I didn't get the chance to check out everything with the narrow lanes, but there was quite a bit of stuff in the small shop. It's also a very unassuming shop in Little Tokyo, so definitely look for the sign. It's across the street from Chase and on the same street as Fugetsu-do (mochi).

We just had a couple keys copied. Only $3 for 2! So cheap. Will come back and support this awesome mom and pops shop.

What a fantastic neighborhood hardware store and a destination for chefs and cooks who need top-notch cutlery. There's a good supply of gardening tools like bamboo rakes. Simple things like mops or tea pots. Or a small wooden stool, which is what I purchased today. The owner is very helpful and friendly - he really makes you feel like being a loyal customer because he cares.

I just picked up a new knife here and would gladly recommend this shop to anyone in the market. The owners were so friendly and spent the time answering all the questions we had about their knife selection, gave some great recommendations and let us look at a bunch of different models. Also picked up a mortar and pestle, they've got a pretty big assortment of other cooking supplies and hardware supplies and everything seems priced fairly. Stop in and browse if you're in Little Tokyo!

Purchased a gyoto 9.5 from this kind gentlemen and expert in kitchen tools and hardware. He asked if I had a business card I then saw his wall full of some the city's top chefs and restaurateurs. I myself am no top chef just a cook who was fortunate to find a great knife. Don't expect cheap but if you have a few dollars for some real japanese steel this is the place.

The store is closed. The sign on the door says it has moved to 220 E 1st St, but there is currently a florist there (January 17, 2024).

    Do they sharpen house knives?

Does anyone know if they tune kanna, or Japanese planes for woodworking?

i am fairly sure that Takatani-san only does knives, and does not deal with woodworking tools beyond selling them. he is very helpful, though, and would likely be able to help you find someone who does; it might be worth visiting or calling. in any… Read more

I love these types of stores so it would've been easy for me to spend lots of money there but I held back! Worth it if you're looking for any sort of unique baking supply.

There are a number of reasons why the Culver City location was so much better, but perhaps the main drawback at this LA location is the fact that the former had a real sense of ambiance, and uniqueness, particularly when it came to its cozy little cafe section. Now the "cafe" is pretty much just a space within a space. Another real draw to the Culver City location was the fact that they actually had a separate section where "Guest Chefs" could come in and teach entire classes via cooking classes that sometimes you have to sign up for in advance, and other times you could just kind of walk in on it. That was dope! And while the staff was friendly enough, and again ( don't get me wrong it's still a place that I will be back to to purchase much needed product), it's just an unfortunate reality that sometimes no....you can't duplicate the past.

From reading the low star reviews, I think you need to only purchase items that you don't care about returning. Buying more expensive electronic items may be too risky for their strict, inflexible 14 day return policy. Come here to buy various 'cheaper' and fun items like inside House slippers, kitchen and home goods (especially plastic items). There are many more upscale kitchen cookware, knives that are European brands. the 2nd floor has larger $$$ electronic items, where it may riskier shopping. I feel like for expensive items, you'd be better off shopping at typical store where there is generous return policy, a la Target, Kohls. I've never seriously checked out their blanket and bedding section, but Korean blankets are supposed to be the bomb- mattress bedding that is super cooling and lightweight. I can only shop here on rare occasions that I make the long drive to K-town, so for me it's fun treasure hunt shopping, and I know I won't be able to return anything easily. This is also a great store to shop for cute gifts. The workers prob. can understand English, but don't expect American style customer service, that's not what you're coming for in older classic K-town businesses.
