Had a real quick trip here recently, and I'd be less and honest if I didn't say I was a bit bummed. I actually found what I came here for (I needed some British double heavy cream) for a particular dish, though I couldn't help but reminisce when this location used to be in Culver city. There are a number of reasons why the Culver City location was so much better, but perhaps the main drawback at this LA location is the fact that the former had a real sense of ambiance, and uniqueness, particularly when it came to its cozy little cafe section. Now the "cafe" is pretty much just a space within a space. Another real draw to the Culver City location was the fact that they actually had a separate section where "Guest Chefs" could come in and teach entire classes via cooking classes that sometimes you have to sign up for in advance, and other times you could just kind of walk in on it. That was dope! And while the staff was friendly enough, and again ( don't get me wrong it's still a place that I will be back to to purchase much needed product), it's just an unfortunate reality that sometimes no....you can't duplicate the past. read more

What an awesome store, I wished I lived closer! I was in search of Monin brand syrups and they had a variety in stock! I grabbed the last bottle of the yuzu puree and a couple of other flavors. The cost was around $65 including tax. I took a brief stroll around the store and was so intrigued, this is the simple joys of adulthood! And accordingly I visit just 1/yr really. Sad but still fun. Good place to find bulk real chocolate powder and chips. This place has everything you need if your a baker, chef, home cook....you name it they have it. From hard to find ingredients to every kitchen tool there is. Everything is well organized and easy to find. Weather you have a professional large scale industrial kitchen or your a home cook you will enjoy just looking at everything they stock. And if you get hungry they have a small Cafe in the back and you can eat on the tables out front. The staff are all knowledgeable so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. The only complaint I have is that they are not closer to where I live in the San Fernando Valley. But then, I might end up spending way more money than I can afford to. A chef's dream. Every kind of cambro you can imagine. Cylindrical, square, cylindrical with square lids, clear, and slightly frosted. Smithy cast iron you can pick up and realize you're too weak to handle a 12" Smithy. Lots of cooking tools and equipment. Deli has solid food for $15-20 a dish. Pretty quick, kind service too. I like the selection of pantry items, not a huge array but they have unique items. Frozen foods and specialty pasta and meats at fair prices. Small parking lot so it's convenient. I've been going to Surfas since the 90s. It can't be beat for restaurant supplies and kitchen supplies. But the prices used to be bananas low, now they're barely cheaper than Sur La Table. Everyone in my family likes to cook, and we decided to trek over to Surfas to check out the cookware/bakeware/kitchen supplies. Though I like the warehouse layout -- seemed like the perfect setup to find something unusual or exotic -- the visit was overshadowed by the thick smell of smoking grease that permeated the store. I was surprised that their ventilation system wasn't any better. I checked out a number of items, and almost everything I looked at was made in China. One reason I went to Surfas was to find the kinds of items that I can't order on Amazon. I took a brief swing through the food area, with ingredients that seemed to cater to people who bake cookies, cakes, and pizza, ie not anyone in my family, but a great selection for those bakers. It's really a 3.5 star but let's round up for good karma. My dear friend raved about this place, but she had only been to the former Surfas, I had never been to the former Surfa only the new one. Well let's just say I can see the potential! Gorgeous space, lovely natural light, organized store. However it fell a little short for me. I felt like the shelves weren't well stocked. There were definitely some quality rare items at reasonable prices, but overall I just wasn't finding treasures or anything truly unique. Maybe if I lived closer I would be super stoked, but I don't so I'm going to say it wasn't quite worth the drive and I probably will only come back if my friend wants to go! Glad this store exists as I am noticing a lot of independent authentic businesses are closing. I appreciate that they carry a wide range of stuff, but I don't know just something was missing. Here they have different types of elements that you would use for pastries, they also have a lot of cookware and machine machines that you can use. Find a space. Any space. Enter through the automatic doors and head past the friendly cashiers, straight to the cafe. You may be distracted by all of the fresh panini sandwiches stacked in the case, but remember, you're here for one thing: The Ultimate Grilled Cheese. Order the sandwich by name, then go for a stroll around the store. Lots of cool things here--especially if you're a chef. But even if you're not a chef. Food is to the left. Equipment is to the right. You'll probably have time for both. Once your sandwich is ready, it's best to take a bite as soon as possible, when the bread is still warm and crispy and the cheese is all melty. The first thing you're going to notice is this is not your typical grilled-cheese sandwich bread. It's not a rustic white or even a rye--it's got raisins in it. And then there's the cheese. These are the cheeses normally reserved for fancy charcuterie boards. This is a gourmet shop, remember. They know their cheeses. You're not going to find any Kraft Singles in there, or even a cheddar. Honestly, I'm not sure what they use. But they definitely put a lot of thought into it. What does it taste like? I'm not sure there's actually a word. It's like the most extraordinary combination of salty and sweet--the saltiness from the cheeses, the sweetness from those raisins. I have spent over $30,000 here furnishing multiple kitchens. I recently purchased a merchandiser refrigerator with delivery. Upon delivery the refrigerator worked but 8 weeks later the refrigerator won't hold temperature. Instead of being treated with customer service they said they couldn't do anything about it and said that I needed to call a technician. This store is an absolute dream for any chef or baker! I came here in need of taupe and gray food coloring. They didn't have these exact colors, but I stumbled upon black and brown powder food coloring, which perfectly met my baking needs. Plus I learned the joy of working with powdered food coloring - it's so easy to control the hue and shade of color you want. I also needed some melting chocolates, but the variety here is quite pricey so I opted for chocolate from the craft store instead. There's plenty of other pantry staples here too, like flavoring extracts, pots, pans, utensils, various flours, and a ton more. Aside from the store itself, the cafe inside serves up some delicious eats and sips. I got a matcha latte with oat milk and a tuna melt which were both so yummy. Unfortunately my total for the cafe came out to around $22, so on the pricier side for a lunch option, but I did enjoy having the store to distract me while I waited. read more

I was devastated when Surfas moved out from Culver City. For the longest time I couldn't find them. A friend told me they didnt close, they just moved, I was so happy. Although I'm not a chef and far from a cook, I love this place! The shop is much smaller now, but they still have some unique items. I've Truffle everything, so when we saw Truffle salt and honey, we scored! I'm not fond of this location and really miss the Culver City location they had, but oh well. I used to visit this place for the sole purpose of getting pasta and butter. Every once in a while I would grab some Lavender honey for my cornbread or some Jam to put in a basket. I hadn't realized they had moved. it feels like a smaller location but that could just be me. They still have a great selection of gourmet butters, jams, cheese, frozen ravioli's, olive oils, vinegars etc. I was on restriction from buying yesterday so I wasn't in there for nothing only to browse and see the new digs. However I was hungry and I've never met a Panini I could walk away from sooooooo Turkey Diesel Panini it was. It has spinach, sundried tomato aioli, provolone on sourdough. This bad mama jamma was eaten in the car... DID Y'ALL HEAR ME?? My sammich looked pretty, smelled incredibly delicious and it was not gonna make it out of the parking lot. Next time I go I will be partaking of the Tomato and Fig cuz that one was also whispering 'sweet nothings in my ear' LOL. Staff at the counter in the deli were so nice and accommodating... I liked the music and had to ask who chose the playlist. Small parking lot, not as many spots as previous location in Culver City, but there is street parking outside of the lot.
