Great stop! Came in an hour before closing and the parking was fine on site - not too busy either! Great selection of products and generally good prices. I love these types of stores so it would've been easy for me to spend lots of money there but I held back! Worth it if you're looking for any sort of unique baking supply. read more

Had a real quick trip here recently, and I'd be less and honest if I didn't say I was a bit bummed. I actually found what I came here for (I needed some British double heavy cream) for a particular dish, though I couldn't help but reminisce when this location used to be in Culver city. There are a number of reasons why the Culver City location was so much better, but perhaps the main drawback at this LA location is the fact that the former had a real sense of ambiance, and uniqueness, particularly when it came to its cozy little cafe section. Now the "cafe" is pretty much just a space within a space. Another real draw to the Culver City location was the fact that they actually had a separate section where "Guest Chefs" could come in and teach entire classes via cooking classes that sometimes you have to sign up for in advance, and other times you could just kind of walk in on it. That was dope! And while the staff was friendly enough, and again ( don't get me wrong it's still a place that I will be back to to purchase much needed product), it's just an unfortunate reality that sometimes no....you can't duplicate the past. read more

What an awesome store, I wished I lived closer! I was in search of Monin brand syrups and they had a variety in stock! I grabbed the last bottle of the yuzu puree and a couple of other flavors. The cost was around $65 including tax. I took a brief stroll around the store and was so intrigued, this is the simple joys of adulthood! Free street parking was readily available and staff were attentive! I definitely plan on returning! read more

One of the best breakfast sandwiches in Los Angeles. Two fried eggs with bacon and arugula and spicy mayo, fresh focaccia baked in house. Perfect combination of acidity and fat. The right bit of crunchiness well still melty and gooey read more

I always love going to Surfas for culinary treats! The selection for cake decorating, baking, cooking, and cookware is like no other! We also love the gourmet food section and the sandwich selection. This place has everything you need if your a baker, chef, home cook....you name it they have it. From hard to find ingredients to every kitchen tool there is. Everything is well organized and easy to find. Weather you have a professional large scale industrial kitchen or your a home cook you will enjoy just looking at everything they stock. And if you get hungry they have a small Cafe in the back and you can eat on the tables out front. The staff are all knowledgeable so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Even the bathrooms are wonderful...lol. This is always a great place to visit. But keep in mind the prices are a bit high on some things so know your product. Have fun and Bon Appetit.... read more

I really enjoyed my visit to this establishment. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The store is chock full of all manner of cooking supplies, food ingredients, and equipment. The only complaint I have is that they are not closer to where I live in the San Fernando Valley. But then, I might end up spending way more money than I can afford to. I will be back soon to buy the frozen pizza dough; it makes for a great stromboli! read more

Expensive restaurant supply store and goirmanderie. Def declined from its time in CC. They used to have nice, cheap glassware - no more. The store is a skeleton of what it was. And accordingly I visit just 1/yr really. Sad but still fun. Good place to find bulk real chocolate powder and chips. But the experimentation of tons of, say, mustards is gone and decorating supplies. Just very skeletal. read more

A chef's dream. Every kind of cambro you can imagine. Cylindrical, square, cylindrical with square lids, clear, and slightly frosted. Smithy cast iron you can pick up and realize you're too weak to handle a 12" Smithy. Lots of cooking tools and equipment. Deli has solid food for $15-20 a dish. Pretty quick, kind service too. I like the selection of pantry items, not a huge array but they have unique items. Frozen foods and specialty pasta and meats at fair prices. Small parking lot so it's convenient. Nice place to explore if you're a cook. read more

I've been going to Surfas since the 90s. It can't be beat for restaurant supplies and kitchen supplies. But the prices used to be bananas low, now they're barely cheaper than Sur La Table. It used to have chef like people helping you and knowing their stuff. Didn't look like there was much staff at all on hand. The reason I deducted 1 star... I bought a $100 pot and I spent 1 hour removing that stupid label/sticker. WHY SURFAS WHY?!? It's still sticky and now my pot reeks of Goo Gone (kerosine). Me no happy. read more

Domestically challenged but the ready made products and cafe don't disappoint! Friendly staff as well.

We had not visited Surfas since it left its Culver City location many years ago. This current location was very disappointing. The old location had a very nice indoor Cafe. We ordered the Turkey Panini this time from the "cafe" which was jammed into a small area along a back wall inside the store. It was a good sandwich, but the eating area, which is outside, is being kept in horrible condition. Plants were dying or dead, not being watered. Weeds were growing and there were only 2 old umbrellas to protect you from the sun, so most seating was in direct sunlight. It looked like an old beat-up area that was going out of business...not pleasant at all. The old Culver City site was very well maintained, even the parking lot was well maintained---but not so now. Overall, it now feels dingy and poorly maintained. Very sad to us that we will not be returning. read more

I go there every so often, a little drive from the valley. Always something to see/get! Today, I ordered a BLT from the Deli. I did not get a BLT. Instead, I received a most wonderful Culinary Experience! To call it a BLT is like calling Japanese Wagyu 'a piece of beef'. This meal was an experience! They also sell all the odd tools/ingredients that you cant find anywhere else. No, I'm not a shill, this is just a really neat place. Gotta go there at least once. That's my story, i'm stickin to it. read more

My visit to Surfas Culinary District exceeded expectations! I came in for stainless steel pots and pans, leaving with much more. Besides restaurant supplies, they have a great food section with everything from olive oil to chocolates, paste, flour, meat, and sprinkles. I'm a sucker for in-store sampling, and I had the bread and butter--it was amazing! Who knew bread tasted so good? I also sampled Lebanon Honey, which was so delicious that I purchased a jar. We had lunch and sat outside; it was sunny and relaxing. There is plenty of parking - and the customer service was exceptional. This place won't disappoint!" Great shop it was like a field trip of the culinary world. Helpful employees. A vast selection of culinary things.

Surfas is a delightful culinary destination in Los Angeles. We were regular customers at its former location in Culver City, and now we're shopping at this location. Coming here is like visiting a Disneyland for cooks and bakers. You'll find everything from hard-to-find baking supplies and exotic spices to professional-grade cookware. The atmosphere is rather warehouse store, but take your time exploring the shelves and refrigerator case. Associates are very helpful. read more

I freakin' LOVE Surfas. But they are so pricey and I am so stupid poor. Whatever, I'll just live vicariously through my own imagination. Tried their little cafe. It was nice. All the sandwiches I guess are premade and heated up after. But I just want one of everything here if only I had the space to keep stuff or the energy to complete just one task. read more

Everyone in my family likes to cook, and we decided to trek over to Surfas to check out the cookware/bakeware/kitchen supplies. Though I like the warehouse layout -- seemed like the perfect setup to find something unusual or exotic -- the visit was overshadowed by the thick smell of smoking grease that permeated the store. I was surprised that their ventilation system wasn't any better. I checked out a number of items, and almost everything I looked at was made in China. One reason I went to Surfas was to find the kinds of items that I can't order on Amazon. I took a brief swing through the food area, with ingredients that seemed to cater to people who bake cookies, cakes, and pizza, ie not anyone in my family, but a great selection for those bakers. Service was fine, and we ended up with a small purchase, but my expectations were high after reading the reviews, and overall we were disappointed. read more

It's really a 3.5 star but let's round up for good karma. My dear friend raved about this place, but she had only been to the former Surfas, I had never been to the former Surfa only the new one. Well let's just say I can see the potential! Gorgeous space, lovely natural light, organized store. However it fell a little short for me. I felt like the shelves weren't well stocked. There were definitely some quality rare items at reasonable prices, but overall I just wasn't finding treasures or anything truly unique. Maybe if I lived closer I would be super stoked, but I don't so I'm going to say it wasn't quite worth the drive and I probably will only come back if my friend wants to go! Glad this store exists as I am noticing a lot of independent authentic businesses are closing. I appreciate that they carry a wide range of stuff, but I don't know just something was missing. Plenty of parking in the private lot and on the street. read more

This is such a nice hidden gem of a place. I gladly make the drive here and back. They have so many things here they have different types of chocolates. Here they have different types of elements that you would use for pastries, they also have a lot of cookware and machine machines that you can use. I also appreciate that they do have a cold counter where you can buy already made things and try them. I would definitely come here and we continue to come here again. read more

Before you decide you've had the best grilled-cheese sandwich in your life, here's what you need to do: Go to Surfas Culinary District on Washington Blvd. The parking lot is small, but don't be discouraged. Find a space. Any space. Enter through the automatic doors and head past the friendly cashiers, straight to the cafe. You may be distracted by all of the fresh panini sandwiches stacked in the case, but remember, you're here for one thing: The Ultimate Grilled Cheese. Order the sandwich by name, then go for a stroll around the store. Lots of cool things here--especially if you're a chef. But even if you're not a chef. Food is to the left. Equipment is to the right. You'll probably have time for both. Once your sandwich is ready, it's best to take a bite as soon as possible, when the bread is still warm and crispy and the cheese is all melty. The first thing you're going to notice is this is not your typical grilled-cheese sandwich bread. It's not a rustic white or even a rye--it's got raisins in it. And then there's the cheese. These are the cheeses normally reserved for fancy charcuterie boards. This is a gourmet shop, remember. They know their cheeses. You're not going to find any Kraft Singles in there, or even a cheddar. Honestly, I'm not sure what they use. But they definitely put a lot of thought into it. What does it taste like? I'm not sure there's actually a word. It's like the most extraordinary combination of salty and sweet--the saltiness from the cheeses, the sweetness from those raisins. I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone has ever offered a grilled-cheese sandwich like this before--even at those places that specialise in grilled cheese. It's like the best grilled-cheese sandwich in L.A., the country, maybe even the world. That may sound like an overpromise, but you haven't tried the Ultimate Grilled Cheese. read more

I 'd this store when it was in Culver City. I took many classes (bread making, cakes, etc.) before they moved. There was much more variety and the café was bigger when they were in Culver City. They still have many items, but it's just not the same vibe. I considered Surfas my very special store with everything I needed when cooking or baking. Now it's in a seedy part of the city and it doesn't have everything, because it's smaller. read more

Surfas is heaven on earth, as far as I'm concerned. My husband likes cooking sure, but he's not a nerd about it like me, and he even likes noodling around their store. We miss having the one in Costa Mesa, wayyy closer to us, but the drive up to L.A. is worth it for us. The store has an amazing array of kitchen and dining equipment, as well as some luxury food items. It's where I currently get my Valrhona. Mmmmm, chocolate The employees are kind, helpful and knowledgeable. The also have a cute little dining area outside. Bright and adorable. read more

I was devastated when Surfas moved out from Culver City. For the longest time I couldn't find them. A friend told me they didnt close, they just moved, I was so happy. Although I'm not a chef and far from a cook, I love this place! The shop is much smaller now, but they still have some unique items. I've Truffle everything, so when we saw Truffle salt and honey, we scored! I'm not fond of this location and really miss the Culver City location they had, but oh well. This store is an absolute dream for any chef or baker! I came here in need of taupe and gray food coloring. They didn't have these exact colors, but I stumbled upon black and brown powder food coloring, which perfectly met my baking needs. Plus I learned the joy of working with powdered food coloring - it's so easy to control the hue and shade of color you want. I also needed some melting chocolates, but the variety here is quite pricey so I opted for chocolate from the craft store instead. There's plenty of other pantry staples here too, like flavoring extracts, pots, pans, utensils, various flours, and a ton more. Aside from the store itself, the cafe inside serves up some delicious eats and sips. I got a matcha latte with oat milk and a tuna melt which were both so yummy. Unfortunately my total for the cafe came out to around $22, so on the pricier side for a lunch option, but I did enjoy having the store to distract me while I waited. read more
