We went to visit some friends for a social distancing dinner and hang out time. My friend had good experiences ordering from Dickey's in the past and saw that they had a family pack for four people, so since there were four of us we decided to try it out. The meal comes with your choice of meat, two sides, sauce, toppings, and buns. We opted for pulled pork, their Carolina BBQ sauce, macaroni and cheese, and Caesar salad. The food all tasted really good. The pulled pork had a great, smoky flavor on its own and tasted really great with the Carolina sauce. The macaroni and cheese was creamy and yummy, and the Caesar dressing that came with the salad was also good. The buns were small slider style and were soft and good with the pork. Really, our main complaint was that while the meat portion was fairly generous, the side portions were really small for four people. We all had to skimp on our amounts to make sure everyone had enough. It's good for calorie counting and probably more indicative of what an actual serving size should be, but when you have four hungry people that want to enjoy a splurge on takeout the sizes weren't adequate. I still opted to go with four stars because the food was tasty, but it's really standing at more of a 3.5 because I don't feel you get as much value for your money with the portions. The sandwich without the sauce was so terribly dry, I couldn't even finish a sandwich I'd usually devour in 5 seconds. I want bbq that you can eat with or without sauce but at Dickeys, you need the sauce because the meat is very dry. With a 3 item platter, they give a tiny sauce cup that was barely enough for one piece of meat. I ended up having to use a bottle of bbq that I had in the fridge to make it able to be swallowed. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by an associate preparing food and the manager/owner met me at the door to explain the menu options. The cashier was super friendly and outgoing. We had to drive all the way back to get the food. The beef brisket was so tender it fell apart on the fork and felt like it melted in your mouth. The polish kelbosa was also delicious. Manuelle (sp?) was very personable and despite their location being busy that evening he offered a sample of three meat options. Boy! That made it very hard to decide which menu plate to go with. The ribs were decidedly not short on the meat to bone ratio. The pulled pork was not overdone (like at other BBQ places we have tried) and the chicken was very well seasoned and far from bland. Almost $35 bucks for 2 dinner plates. Our Brisket was about as stale, dried out and hard as possible! The ribs were a 5 on a scale of 10 (would have given a one star but the ribs are halfway decent) however for $16 bucks you can take my world for it. The sides aren't even good. I'm not sure what the hype is. Maybe the Jensen location is better but I'm not going to find out. Hard pass. I tried this place for the first time after seeing it open on Colonial. My wife got a pulled pork sandwich and liked it fine. I ordered a combo platter with brisket and burnt ends. The brisket was like tough dried-out roast beef. I couldn't even cut it with the plastic knife they provided. The burnt ends were also cubes of rock hard meat with a kinda gross sauce on them. On a post-Covid lockdown afternoon I had a taste for 'Que but didn't have the gumption to fire up the smoker for a few hours. So, thought I might give the recently opened Dickey's Barbecue Pit strip center store on West Hwy. 50 a try. Had a walk-in to-go order of the sliced Brisket Classic Sandwich Plate ($9.50 - Includes sandwich and two regular sides of your choice.) The order provided an average size sandwich appropriately laden with BBQ beef brisket and my selected sides of coleslaw & potato salad. However, it seems the meat man (or woman) could use a few tips for proper brisket slicing technique. No matter how skilled the pit master may be, slicing a brisket along the grain of the muscle (instead of more properly across the muscle grain) is always going to provide a toothier, stringy piece of protein. The barbecue brisket was smokey & flavorful with a decent bark, but most every sandwich bite included using a fork to separate the meaty bite from the fresh bun. The requested Spicy BBQ Sauce had a nice peppery bite to it (that is a good thing) served up by the abundance of crushed red pepper flakes it contains. The Dickey's coleslaw is somewhere between vinegar & a creamy style - Not really either, but probably a fair middle-of-the-road rendition for those that prefer either concoction. The mustard-style potato salad carried on the "food service for the masses" theme, partially creamy though with enough smaller, tender 'tator chunks to be toothsome. Overall, the take-out experience was a fair BBQ meal deal for a sawbuck. Probably not the type of smokehouse restaurant one would travel across town to visit, but when I am in the mood for a quick 'Que fix I will consider another stop in the future. read more
