Well I had a helluva time here at DFGN on a recent Friday night - - which happened to be their "Grand Opening" - - offering half off on appetizers?!? Aww yeah I'm all game for a deal on Asian cuisine. Bright trailer, very busy, they're cutting up some veggies and it looks so appetizing. I asked for a recommendation, she says the DFG for sure - - honey soy glazed pork belly, cucumber, cilantro, wrapped in pan cripsed malay bread, finished with chicken curry. Normally $5.50 but it's half off - - AWWW YEAH!! That sounds good, let's do it up. We'll have 1 of these and then hit the bars, don't want to fill up too soon. A few minutes pass, here comes our DFG, it's piping hot and I get some spicy sauce on the side. To no avail I put some on and take a bite - - wow! It really floored me - - awesome flavors mixing together, and I totally love the malay bread it's wrapped in - - way better than a tortilla I tell ya! I get the curry, some pork, sweetness, hot, cilantro, it's literally so damn good I take a couple more bites until my friend Cosmo's like "dude - - half that's supposed to be mine....". Oh, mah fault. Here you go. Cosmo's reaction - - the same, he totally dug it. It was so dang good that we came back to DFGN when the bars closed out to order another one of those awesome DFG appetizers. It tasted just as good as the first - - can't get enough! Customer service was superb! The owner was there, she was very nice and attentive, the other staff were very prompt, courteous, and quick with the execution. They also gave us "goodie bags" filled with cookies for their grand opening, and they had free beer...?!? Wowsers. The food is very tasty and unique, one of a kind. Very tasty and fast with great service. Personally, I think the portion was a little small for the price and for a dinner. I ordered the Scholar with an egg for $12. Glad I added the egg, I think without it I would have had to order a second one. The noodles and pork were very tasty, so no complaints about the taste or service. read more

Not a bad place to chow down! I came during SXSW so the prices were skewed a bit so I pretended to eat the food whenever its regular price :) I had the banh mih and potstickers. the potstickers weren't excellent but weren't bad either. Just solid potstickers you find at any asian restaurant. The crispiness was there but I didn't get that flavourful bite on the inside as I would at some top dumpling houses. The banh mih was quite interesting. Not your traditional banh mih since they used a thai style curry with coconut shavings on the meatballs. Was pretty solid but I can see why some people won't like the unique flavor. All in all, a decent food truck! I'll definitely be back to try the noodles since that's what they are known for. read more

Wow, I'm surprised I haven't reviewed one of my favorite food trucks in Austin! There isn't enough good things to say about this place. Oh! But it can get quite busy, (even though the staff is exceptional) so get there early and if not, it'll be a short wait. And yes, it is worth it. My go to is the DFG Trinity! (It's in small print at the bottom of the menu). There is some spiciness in this but the flavors are exploding with deliciousness! If you ever see the meatballs on special, those are a must add to your order. You will NOT be disappointed. The staff is not only exceptional, but highly skilled and very successful at any food modification you may have.(ie. boiled egg, fried egg, cilantro, etc.) If you're ever downtown around 11-2pm on Friday's, you can probably find this food truck at either Silicon Labs Building (200 or 400 West Cesar Chavez). read more

Update: Thank you, DFG for taking the time out to respond to my review and suggest a sweet sauce I can add - I am sure that will help! Tried DFG for the first time after seeing what a long line they had and figuring something with that much attention must be good! First off, they should get mad credit for their speed and attention to detail. I think their small menu allows them to turn customers super fast, while still being able to make substitutions and customizations. They staff were so incredibly friendly, it blew me away. The food was great, and I'm glad I followed the staff's advice on doing a scholar sub (that had both elements of the scholar and of the golden nuggets) so I could try a bit of both worlds, but I felt like the dish was seriously lacking in a sweet element. The portion size was good (even for a medium - they offer larger sizes as well) but I didn't really scarf it down the way I had planned because I needed that sweetness. All in all, I think this is a fantastic lunch spot if you are in the area. You can't beat that service ! read more

Delightful Friendly Gals? Deep Fried Goodness? Destined For Greatness? So, I was at work, had no lunch plans, was starving, and not motivated by our office park's usual Tuesday food truck offering (hot dogs). So, I thought I'd run an errand and see if something inspired me. As I turned onto Research, I saw the DFG (which stands for "Dang F'ing Good Asian street food") at the nearby Schwab office park, and pulled over. There was a decent amount of folks waiting, but no one in line to order, so I walked right up. The young lady who helped me was charming, and offered suggestions (in a kind way, not in a 'hurry up and choose something already' way). Though she suggested their take on pho, even though it was about a bazillion degrees outside. I went with "The Scholar" (stir fried, marinated vermicelli noodles, with little diced bits of spiced ham/spam, pork belly, chinese greens and shallots, with Sambal chili sauce on top) because: pork belly. Instead of committing to the large, I got the "medium" (which is the smallest size), and used the cheaper price to justify adding a fried egg, as well as a side of the fried dark meat chicken "Golden Nuggets". Each was an additional $1.50. The food came out lightning fast, which means that everything was just being kept warm until needed for assembly later. This may have been why the egg seemed a little more done than I prefer. Half the yolk was hard cooked. It did add good flavor, so that's a plus. I found the noodles to be too broken (or cut?) to be as fun to eat with the provided chopsticks. Credit where credit is due, the provided chopsticks were the nicer rounded ones that didn't have to be snapped apart. I'd say that even if you "don't like spicy food", you should mix a bit of the Sambal (that's like unblended Sriracha, right?) in to make it more interesting. The fried chicken was the tasty highlight. I wonder if they would just sell me two sides of that... Overall a decent work-lunch option, but nothing blew me away (though the fried chicken was almost there). The way I did it, though, it was an $11 entree, at a slightly smallish portion. I am not one that sticks to a routine, when it comes to food. I like variety in my food. But in rare moments that I find something good, I do eat it a lot. The Scholar for DFG is one such meal I tend to eat again and again. The food truck comes to my place of work once a week. They are always nice, friendly and food is always good. I did manage to try the other entrees, such as the Golden Nuggets (fried chicken), and the Fire Cracker Shrimp. Once it gets cooler, I will try their curry dishes too. * 5 / 5 stars 3 words - Dang. F'ing. Good. DFG is so aptly named... man this place is the bomb dot com. I look forward to it so much every Wednesday that I have a calendar invite in my outlook so that I don't forget (tbh, I don't need the calendar invite because i will never forget to go). First and foremost, the food is TOP QUALITY. Yes, the menu is tiny and they're cooking out of a food truck, but the taste is a ten out of ten. My favorite order is The Scholar with Curry on top. It's always piping hot, very fresh, and nothing is ever soggy (i.e. the noodles are kept separate and the green onion garnish is always put on top at the last minute). The portions are also very generous, and well plated and covered in foil for easy transport back to the office. Their customer service is also on point. Sometimes the line gets very long, but you can tell the crew is busting their butt to get through that line as fast as they can. Everyone is friendly, and the woman taking the orders (potentially the owner?) ALWAYS smiles and thanks customers. They also have a nice loyalty program where if you go there 10 times, you get a little reward :) Finally, just a last shoutout to DFG for keeping it real and repping the Filipino / Malay food out here in Austin. It's awesome to get that kind of variety here - truly a breath of fresh air. There was pork adobo on the specials menu the other week and I couldn't believe it. The highlight of my week. Best char kway teow I've had in austin - they use proper lap cheong- very oily and very satisfying. The Malay (be sure to order the $1 roti) hits the spot without sitting too heavily in your stomach and the Scholar (bee hoon) with a sunny side up egg is paired with really nice homemade sambal for some full balanced flavours. It's been a while since I've had something that blew my mind. Really it has been. I've had a lot of good food over the holidays and a lot of bland food too. So I wasn't expecting much when I took my first bite into DFG and in the midst of an allergy induced suppression of my taste buds, really didn't expect to taste anything. Boy was I wrong. *mind blown* The scholar is where it's at. Extremely flavorful charred pork belly and spam in thin vermicelli noodles. There's some sweet, savory, salty action going on over there that has just enough richness and enough spice to cut through everything. I could eat this stuff for days and not get tired of it. The chicken malay is good too if you're into curry. Big chunks of chicken and potato in a warm curry milk sauce. Sad part? They're hard to chase down since they move around. Ordered via Uber Eats a large Golden Nuggets with Sub Scholar noodles ($1 extra) and sesame soy veggies ($1 extra). I just counted the "veggies" - there are exactly 7 small pieces of green beans and 3 tiny leaves of cabbage. I paid extra for that??? On my request in the note section I asked for soy sauce and some hot chili paste - not included. Even if they didn't have this, they didn't make it spicy. Most everything tastes too salty - and just un-good. So here I am on this rainy day completely unsatisfied with this uneaten food in front of me....$16 poorer. Update: See below for owner's comments. This is my response to that bit of rambling... Yelp is for reviews of the food. That is exactly what I did...reviewed the actual food that I received. I thought it was over-salted and less than what I expected in terms of what I paid extra for. And no, the chili was nowhere in the bag - of this I am certain. In no way am I responsible for how many staff are present to cook the food, regardless of the weather conditions. Nor am I responsible for the profit (or loss) of a business. The business owner bears that responsibility. I wanted vegetables with the meat/noodles I ordered. I received a paltry amount. I would have likely paid whatever the cost advertised ($3? Sure...whatever) because that's what I wanted. If this business caters to people who will not pay the true cost of the items served, then I am not the target audience. I do not have a problem paying for what I want. If a business does not make money because of Uber Eats, then don't participate. Again, not the fault of the customer. In the case of this particular business, it sounds like there needs to be some re-evaluation in terms of pricing. To blame the customer for them not making a profit is utterly ridiculous. No spite here at all. I did not like the food and it is well within my right to say that. And looking back at other reviews, there are people who agree about the serving size and saltiness. Not sure how long they've been in downtown on Wednesdays, but I'm really glad I found them. They first drew me in when they had sinigang, a Filipino soup that exemplifies comfort food, as their weekly special. It's pretty tough finding Filipino food anywhere in Austin, so I knew I had to try it. Plus, it happened to be a cold day, so a warm soup over a bowl of rice really hit the spot. I remember going to the Yelp Dinner hosted by DFG at least a couple years back. We were all impressed by the flavors and the hospitality. My +1 and I were especially happy with their 'Slow Time Special' that consisted of noodles served with a fried egg and pulled pork (omg the pork) and bok choy. My +1 loved it so much that she made regular stops at their Rainey location often enough that she only had to give her name and they knew her order. Cut to last year when I started a new job where food trucks are on regular rotation in the courtyard - one of those being DFG. Unfortunately, the 'Special' is long gone. BUT, they still serve my second favorite dish from that meal long, long ago - the Scholar which consists of delicious rice noodles with ham, chopped pork belly, greens, deliciously fried shallots and that oh-so delicious and perfectly fried egg on top. It's a little different than it was back then. I feel like they took the really flavorful elements of their Slow Time Special and fused them with the comforting and satisfying components of The Scholar. I love this dish and pretty much order it every time DFG is at the office. Glad to see that this food truck is still going strong and more so that they bring their delicious goods to me once a month! read more

Update: I was contacted by the owner, Cheryl, who was briefed on my terrible prior experience with them. She actually was the last person I interacted with at DFG noodles who handed me my food but I hadn't seen her presence during the entire time I was waiting. Upon hearing how terrible my visit with them went and the build up of my total frustration, she agreed that this was not acceptable service from them and owned up to it. My order getting lost, the very long wait, frustration on their side of the fryer breaking, we're all just unfortunate events that snowballed into a total crappy visit. She did mention that she was grateful that I took a chance on them rather than sticking to a food vendor that I knew and loved and raved to have my friends try their food out. I am glad my friends who did try got their food fast and piping hot. Totally jealous on their fast service and food service there so in a perfect situation, they've got it locked down! I appreciated the honesty of her as an owner, and from the unfortunate day, the reason for the halfsies apology (which really peeved me) was most likely because she did not know just how long I had waited for my food. She hadn't known how long I had truly waited and after hearing the backstory felt super bad. There were a new person training up who didn't know the proper methods to follow. She comped my meal and also supplied a gift card to their competitors to make it right and for that, I truly appreciate the above and beyond actions that she took to make things right. Mistakes happen, and I'm glad they helped make the situation 100% better! 12/14/2015 original review: They did me wrong. $12 + tip and I left completely disappointed. The DFG Golden Nuggets, $9 on a bed of tiny tiny rice. Totally disappointing. They continued to take orders but didn't let folks after me ordering the same thing know. I would have been forgiving and understanding but what happened next just completely sucked. I waited patiently, and waited on my food. They came to Trail of Lights and I decided they would be better, to try something new aside from my beloved Chilantros. Folks that came into the Trail of Lights when I came, had bought an EXTRA hours worth of time to enjoy with less crowdage. Too bad their "Sorry, 5 more minutes..." turned into a whole 45 minutes of me standing around waiting while folks ordering after me the Golden Nuggets received their order. The final slap came when someone in my group ordered 40 mins after me while I was waiting, and not 5 minutes after, received their order of the Golden Nuggets, fried and ready for him. Now, I don't like to pester the folks who have orders upon orders, and not even sure what happened amongst all the chaos. There was absolutely no apology from the employees that worked on the truck that night. Nothing in regards to why my name and where my food was supposed to head out the line and where my order disappeared to? They seemed frazzled and did not want to own up to their mistake of having me stand by their truck for quite some time, cold and hungry. I trust when I pay and have people cook in their food trucks, whatever food system they have should be good and going but they totally suck at their services and lack of apology. I don't think I'm being too harsh with two stars, but maybe two-and-a-half stars would be a little fairer. After all, I have a pretty good idea of what Asian food is supposed to taste like. But I don't think I'm coming back any time soon, so definitely not three stars. I ordered the Scholar, which seemed to be the staple/featured dish according to the marketing materials I'd seen. The first thing I noticed in my to-go box was how little the portion was! Imagine your garden-variety bowl for normal kitchen use. Imagine no more than 3/4 of that bowl, maybe even 1/2 that bowl filled with noodles. That's about how much I got. I paid an extra $1.50 for the egg (nice upcharge), which was okay, but in retrospect, not enough to save the noodles. Oh yes, and the last two straws were the noodles being limp and wet (soaked all day and not cooked?) and that the noodles were chopped pretty short. Total cost: $10+. For $10, I can get a lot of food elsewhere that's cooked better. I mean, come on. If DFG wants to survive, they need to up their quality and quantity. Through the Dark void of aweful Asian restaurants passes a brilliant silver unicorn a streak of greatness, I give you DFG noodles! They are the soul practitioners of authentic Singapore style food in the atx, and damn is it good! yes authentic can be good! In fact... It's best! Why would you try to fix something that ain't been broke for 100's of years? Anyway I digress to the foods. The laksa which is a coconut curry broth with noodles is awesome! Savory and rich and a little spicey, just great! The scholar which is a fine rice noodle fried with delicious pork and an egg is superb! They keep it simple and consistent something everyone should take note of. I took my wife's Cantonese family here and they all loved it. Just damn f@($ing good noodles! Wasn't really feeling it, they jumped on me right at the opening to the park and were hard selling me the specials. I went ahead and tried the shrimp bowl, ended up costing me about 8 dollars and I got this weird bowl of angle hair pasta and fishy broth and a LOT of hard boiled egg on the top. Maybe I do not understand the concept, but I felt it was really expensive for this half full bowl of from the box pasta and some eggs. +1 star because they were nice. read more

Woooooo! Get the DFG Taco!!!! (unless you don't like cilantro) The owner told us someone told her she needed to put a taco on her menu. Advice well taken. She created something like a Japanese pancake or a roti, maybe, and wrapped up pulled pork with fresh cucumber, cilantro, and hot sauce). Also a huge fan of the Slow Time Special: noodles served with a fried egg and pulled pork (omg this pork) and bok choy. You break the yoke and the egg runs into the noodles, making it creamy and savory. Mix it together and enjoy an amazing blend of things I can't describe. I ate this 2 days in a row @ the Lonestar Le Mans this past weekend. I had The Scholar with Curry and Egg on day one (those noodles were to die for) and I had The Malay with Egg, Veggies, Curry and Fried Chicken. This just knocked it out of the park. Props to these guys for kicking mad butt at the event. Their line was definitely the longest each day, which was impressive! Great experience from the amazing staff! UPDATE: my right foot has been numb for the past 2 hours and I have a weird headache. I think DFG tried to poison ME. I was less than impressed with this trailer. I got the Golden Nuggets. It was very dry. They were cheap with the hot sauce and someone gave me only cilantro stems (do they pick out the leaves for the Yelp Elite Customers only?!?). Also the pot stickers seemed like they were from Costco (good but not special). For waiting in line in the heat, it was a let down -- if there was no line and you were hungry, than its worth stopping by. DFG Noodles should receive 2 stars, but I docked it 1 star due to the Yelp itself. On my birthday, a Saturday, and under the cover of anonymity, a Yelp Elite Squad Manager sent me an email saying that I wasn't good enough to be Yelp Elite. I do thank whoever nominated me and am sad that Yelp does not think i'm good enough to be part of their Elite Club. read more

I keep finding myself at food trucks in the middle of the night hoping that the carbs will offset the drunkenness of my companions. DFG was the spot last night. It was pouring down rain, and I met my friends there. The staff graciously allowed us to hang under their awning while we tore into our dishes. I don't even remember what I had, but it was AMAZING, and the prices were LOW. I finished the whole bowl before I'd realized it. It was one of those "SOMEONE ATE MY WHOLE PIE" moments. I lived in Malaysia for a couple of years, and I was craving some curry and roti canai. I looked up their website and wanted to order the char kuey teow on the summer menu, so I was beyond disappointed when I arrived and it wasn't available. The malay: The fried chicken was ok, but the curry rice was way too oily and was left unfinished. Save your money and do not get the roti, it was too dry and bland. The scholar: Not really pork belly, it was that and some spam-like meat. The noodles were only lukewarm and did not taste fresh at all. The golden nugget: The rice was way too salty- I went back and had them give me a portion of white rice to even out the flavor. The portions were also lacking. I am not a big eater was not full with a medium and the price ($7.5) warranted a full meal. So disappointed and I will not be back. read more

I'm not from Austin but had a lot of fun checking out the food trucks (not as common in my city) while I was in town for a conference. DFG was one of the few options open during weekday lunchtime at the little food truck park on Rainey. I got the Scholar, which I thought was pretty good. The noodles were very thin and a bit hard to pick up the leftover bits. The staff was very nice, and recommended a chilled chamomile tea drink which was excellent. DFG gets 2 thumbs up for printing good, actual itemized receipts - something I really appreciated since I have to fill out obnoxiously bureaucratic expense reports. read more

During a visit to the many bars of Rainey St, DFG was an oasis of smells and flavors. With the amount of pork shoulder I was told they go through a day, I ordered the "scholar". Delicious broth and pork flavors...it was the perfect food for a wild night at the bars. Not too heavy, not too light. The owner/chef put up with my loudness and created a great meal. Service: 5 star. Excellent. Food: 2 star I'm Singaporean. Cheryl was extremely friendly and gave us free samples. They were definitely very filling. It pains me to write this. The curry was rather watery, bland, and lacked the oily, coconutty goodness that Malay curry has. The roti prata bread was a heated up frozen piece of dough. I honestly can't believe I just waited half an hour to eat that. Food quality is terrible. Flavor was nothing but heat. Cilantro was wilted and bland. The fruit cup was a terrible mess and the pineapple wasn't even cored. I paid a dollar for a spoonful of rice. And after spending eleven dollars on lunch I'm still hungry. No I'm not a big person. Yes I have experience eating. That sucked. Oh and lose the giant gas generator - exhaust fumes and waiting forever in line are the opposite of appetizing. A former co-worker has been telling me to try this for years now. I've never gotten around to it, but finally did yesterday. They have a tasty menu and I couldn't decide, so i asked them to recommend a dish. before I could walk away the dish was ready at the pickup window, piping hot and smelling like food heaven. I tried the Scholar, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's looking for mediocre. It was awesome! If you see this truck, don't miss out like I did, stop in and try it. I wish I had sooner.
