D&B is my favorite place to go for soup. I especially like that they have vegetarian options. Salads are good, too but it seems they put the same amount of lettuce in the large as they do the small bowl -_- I always get the small salad because the large seems salad suspiciously no different. I've their chicken-salad sandwich and tuna sandwich; and both were bland and nothing really exciting considering it wasn't exactly cheap. While they have a lot of sandwich options, I still feel like the options could be a bit better. The sandwiches are premade, they make them fresh in the morning; I've seen them prep for lunch a few times when I stopped in for an early morning snack. Yes, you get free bread with your soup or you can purchase a big hunk of cornbread which is very tasty. Overall, I'm satisfied with my experiences at D&B and I plan to keep visiting. read more

This place is packed for lunch but honestly I wouldn't recommend it I was soooooo disappointed by their gyro that it led me to looking for actual gyro places for the following 2 weeks smh.... thy have a large variety of sandwiches salads and soups amongst other things. Most days I need my lunch to be fast and dependable. On those days, I go to Devon & Blakely. Yes, it's crowded during lunch, but I don't mind that. It's usually filled with cute young professionals. Yes, seating is limited, but I don't know anybody that goes here for a sit-down lunch. Out-of-towners, maybe? The deciding factor for me here is speed. The lines for salad, soup, sandwich are easy to navigate and the cashiers work with practiced purpose and precision. I am out the door with soup and a piece of bread in less than three minutes during the lunch rush. Try that at Mcdonalds. read more

It's a damn good sandwich, but not diamond-encrusted; -MODERN: i) mozarella, prosciutto and arugula on focaccia; ii) roast turkey, brie and cranberry chutney on a rye baguette; and iii) eggplant, hummus and sprouts on whole-wheat. It's a nice departure from your regular deli; the sandwich dudes will do what they can to toast your sandwich for you upon request. The many varieties of bread have that nice weighty texture that I associate with good bread, rather than that fluffy oddness you buy at the supermarket; -EUROPEAN CANDY AND CHICHI CHIPS: they sell Cadbury's and Mama Zuma's revenge chips; -YUMMY SALADS: You can build-your-own with lots of delicious ingredients like hearts of palm, tofu, sprouts, roast chicken. They also have a variety of dressings. However, I wouldn't go later in the day. I sometimes go to the gym during lunch and pick up a salad to eat on the way back to the office. The last time I did that, I woke up at 2:45am with a bout of Pazuzu-like projectile vomiting that knocked me out for a day and a half. I still don't know if it was a stomach virus or food poisoning but I wouldn't risk it again. Actually, I haven't been back since that whole episode. I'm torn between 2/3 stars. It's an average experience, so I'll round up. I find Devon & Blakely overpriced for what it is. A full meal here costs around $10, and the quality is okay. My coworkers like coming here for the soups and free bread with the soup. The soup is quite expensive--about $5 for a small bowl. The soup is good but expensive, I've tried the sandwiches and they are average. The Federal Triangle area is limited with food options, so I think that aspect keeps this location pretty busy. Devon & Blakely is a good spot and has a variety of foods. I'm generally there for soups and salads. I have NEVER gotten a sandwich just because of the way it's displayed. I'm pretty particular about my sandwiches. Anyways, this place can be EXPENSIVE. The fact you can come out paying $10 for a salad is just outrageous to me. I've had some pretty good salads for cheaper. I do like their soups but likewise soups run at $6-7. This is right up the street from my office, so on the days I am too lazy to bring a lunch and too lazy to venture to Farragut Sq Park (i think that's the park's name) for the food trucks, I walk over to Devon & Blakely for lunch. There are so many sandwich, salad and soup options. Despite it appearing chaotic with the numerous lines, it really is rather efficient. I can be in and out of there within 10 minutes and walking back to my office to eat lunch at my desk on a busy day. Walked in for lunch yesterday and ordered a turkey sandwich. The place is definitely hectic and loud so just be aware of that before you go. There's no instruction on how to order so just step up when you have a chance to get food. The sandwich was fresh and tasted good but is overpriced even for D.C. I also grabbed a Rice Krispy treat by the register when checking out which was pretty good! Would recommend if you want fresh soup, salads, and sandwiches but avoid if you aren't a fan of really busy places. read more

Pros: -Great variety of quality soups -Speed of service. Cons: -Good luck getting a table if you get there after 12:05 because they only have about 12 tables. -Prepare to be stressed out: the manager(s) are yelling at the employees, and the employees are yelling at the customers. It's like the Soup Nazi place from Seinfeld, but without any of the charm. The local lunch crowd appreciates an efficient line, but I don't think this requires prison-guard style shouting at customers and amongst employees. Lighten up, D&B, it's only lunch. read more

This is mainly a review of their catering service, but I think a number of us in the area sometimes need to order food for breakfast/lunch meetings. We had an emergency this morning when our regular caterer forgot to bring a dessert plate. Having heard that Devon & Blakely did last minute orders, I called to see if they could put something together. In 13(!) minutes they delivered a wonderfully decorated plate of cookies and brownies. No delivery charge, and the person I spoke to on the phone was extremely helpful. I don't know of anywhere else in the area that has customer service like that. I find that the quality of ingredients is really good. Whenever I make my own salad, they are generous with the toppings and everything looks fresh and gourmet. The sandwiches can be hit or miss, but there are FAR more hits than misses. I always love the tuna, the pressed paninis, and the reuben. I actually find the wraps to be hit or miss, often too salty for my tastes. Anyway the food is all good and don't mind the crowds - they are super quick and the guys working behind the counter are great. read more

It's definitely not as cheap as Potbelly's but I like their selection and good customer service--and food too. I used to go here sometimes when I lived in NYC. Great soup (you can have lots of samples), lots of sandwich options, toss-your-own salad bar and a prepared salad area with different types of salads, such as curried chickpeas, walnut, goat cheese and strawberries, curried chicken salad, roasted curried cauliflower (they must love curry) and the amazing roasted brussel sprouts (they are amazing. try them even if you think you don't like brussel sprouts). They could use a few more gourmet salad bar options to toss into your salad but they have all the basics plus. Competitive to get a seat during the lunch rush hour. Their soup tastes great! but most of us wont go there is we knew how they prepare the soup. They make the soup at home and re heat it in the store. For re heating, they put the soup in a thin plastic bag and put the bag in hot boiling water. That grossed me out and I never went there again!! Great sandwiches packed with flavor. I like the Blackened Chix Gyro and it is done right every time. The prices are really high though for lunch...sad, but true. Have usually like this place but One Bad Apple spoils the bunch I recently had an encounter with the manager at this restaurant in Washington DC that put such a nasty taste in my mouth I want to tell the world he was rude nasty, nonchalant and impatient. I literally asked for white bread they only had the one small end piece and one large piece. Not wanting a lopsided sandwich I was offered the ciabatta bread. I was never informed there was an upcharge when I bought this to the manager's attention he literally disregard my concerns and said it's either that or they multi-grain. I don't care for their multigrain However I settled on the multigrain because I really wanted the same which it was my lunch break and I was hungry. Then I see him take the contents that had just been heated up with the ciabatta bread and put it on a new multigrain. I told him I don't want wilted lettuce he said do you want the bread toasted or not I said yes but I don't want reheated lettuce and tomatoes he looked at me said but we could just toast the bread. At this point said nevermind. he told me have a nice day!! I hate to think this was racially motivated but it definitely felt like discrimination to me as he was very helpful to other Patriots in the store. read more

This last time I actually questioned his math but didn't want to seem petty over a dollar :) also the free bread is nice but it never seems fresh. Every sandwich looks amazing, seriously; unfortunately, the looks are definitely deceiving. I paid double digits for a prosciutto, mangchego, arugula and fig panini. Sounds amazing right? It definitely left a lot to be desired. Not to say it was bad, but it was the epitome of average. Just fig preserve, barely any meat, and the thinnest slices of manchego I've ever seen. Salads are extremely overpriced for quality and flavor. Got charged $1.50 for adding avocado and didn't event get a quarter of avocado in my salad. Romain lettuce looked old. Fantastic soups. I wish they had Tomato and Rice more often -- but the soups are terrific. Usually there are 15+ and there are always 3-5 that meet your fancy. The staff at this location is terrific. If they make a mistake, they admit it quickly. You'll never have a bad lunch here. Also, salad bar quite good. Like the ingredients and fresh chopping. Pre-made sandwiches are excellent. Just had one of the worst sandwiches ever, but at least it was seriously over priced. Why would they put pickles and tomato on a ham and turkey sandwich, grill it and then wrap it in foil to go? And it's not what I ordered, but of course didn't know that until I got back to the office and removed the foil. By the time I walked a block back to the office it had the consistency of a soggy dish sponge and the mystery sauce smelled about the same too. It was just a pile of goo on the foil which I picked at, but couldn't pick up and eat. Most of it went in the trash. I've never been impressed by this place and now I'm done. Never again. I could feed a family of four for what I paid too. Almost $15 for a sandwich and a Coke. read more

My go-to lunch place. Great variety, everything is delicious, and they really seem to want you to loiter around tasting at least five soups before you finally make up your mind. I almost always go for a vegetarian soup, which I think is reasonably priced. Make sure to check the price written on the lid, because occasionally I'll find they mark the veggie soups with the same price as the meaty soups, even though they're generally a dollar cheaper. The only downside is this place is busy, so I recommend going for a take-out lunch. Going a little later in the afternoon (after 1:30) helps to get table space, but by then the most popular soups have sold out! read more

New Devon & Blakely open up in downtown DC, at the corner of 18 & G street NW. I have to look at taste, price and serving size. I think all items are very well priced except for some of the sandwiches. I ordered a "pressed" Cuban, it was very small, pressed mean it was put through a toaster, but it was not hot or even close to being warm. the Size and price $8.50 + tax= $9.45 for a 6" was not reasonable. The tasts was nothing outstanding just a regular sandwich you could make better at home. I will probably never go there again to get a sandwich. I have not tried anything else, I may try the salad, soup and possibly breakfast options. Right now I cannot give them a good review. read more

Great soup. However everything else is overpriced, even the drinks. They must know it because it took me about 4 minutes to figure out what the price of an orange juice was. No one knew except for the girl at the checkout counter which was across the restaurant and it was incredibly frustrating and humiliating to have to ask 3 different people the price of an item with them giving me dirty looks. D&B is around the corner from my office--my first day starting this job, i came here for some delicious sandwiches. I personally *love* their Prosciutto/mozzarella/grilled veggie sandwich (sorry not sure exactly what' it's called). I'm not a huge fan of their bread, in general--it's a little hard to chew. Apart from that, this is a great place to grab a sandwich, or a soup (they always have *so* many soups, I can never choose! though be careful, they can be salty). I came here for a quick lunch while I was in DC for a business trip. I only had a couple minutes to grab something but still wanted a healthy meal so I was so glad that they had a made-to-order salad bar. The salad bar offered a variety of items and toppings, and the ingredients were all very fresh. The prices are reasonable too. They also have sandwiches, wraps, soups, snacks, and desserts.
