Dinner on a Monday evening made for a quiet, comfortable experience perfect for fun conversation over dinner. Our server kindly accommodated our group of 5 (a large party for the restaurant's small tables) with a space that could accommodate all of the food we would order. We tried much of the menu between the variety offered in the seafood tower and a few other small plates. Some servings were more generous than others, like the Caesar salad and beef tartar, the latter of which was my favorite dish. The seafood dishes were by far the highlight: the tuna tatake, crab dip, and smoked trout had great flavors. The escargot was also perfectly cooked with great texture. The only dishes that were underwhelming were the deviled eggs (they were fine) and the overcooked shrimp cocktail in the tower. The cocktails covered a range of flavor profiles from sweet to sour, and everyone was pleased with their choices. The Porn Star Martini was so good I got it twice. We stayed for hours just chatting, the vibe of the bar definitely giving cozy French speakeasy. The check came with an adorable art nouveau-esque cat postcard. I was here for a wedding reception where the place was bought out so my review is based on that. The drinks were flowing and the food was constantly being passed around. The DJ had the crowd on the dance floor all night and the staff was AMAZING! I loved the venue! The inside has a small area with tables and lounge chairs as well as an outdoor patio. The side doors open completely up too letting cool air flow through. The cocktails were delicious as well as the hors d'oeuvres as well. A place that's beautiful AND has amazing mocktails.. too good to be true but Deux Chats delivers both. I really love the old Parisian decor. When I saw the art nouveau inspired tiles on the wall, I instantly wanted to come here. It has a very intimate feel inside although it's not a small space. I'd recommend bringing your date here! It's not too loud and had lots of drinks to choose from including non alcoholic options. And the oysters were great. The bartender was very helpful with recommendations. And a charming one at that, being as it were one of my preferred venues these days for a cocktail in South Williamsburg. While the cassis julep is pictured since I'm a sucker for kir royales and anything to do with cassis, in fact my favorite drink was the Le Gambier - a peculiarly translucent beverage with an unfamiliar flavor profile ostensibly borne from "clarified pineapple." While a pineapple has never posed a question to me, consider any such outstanding queries satisfied after having a sip of this expertly crafted concoction. As a vegetarian, I'll abstain from commenting on the food offerings. read more

Deux Chats was vibes. We randomly stopped in after an amazing dinner at the nearby Aska and couldn't have had a better nightcap. The place was very nearly full, but we were able to grab a small table toward the back. The atmosphere was loud and buzzy (though not obnoxiously loud), one of those places where it feels like everyone could end up making friends. The drinks were mostly fantastic, although I wouldn't recommend ordering off menu. They have an excellent list of customizable martinis and martini variations, along with other drinks. I had a classic martini with a lemon twist. The menu didn't mention the specs, but I wanted something between a wet and dry martini, and the classic delivered! We next split a Martinez. For those unaware, the Martinez (gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, orange bitters) is considered the precursor to the martini. Deux Chats' version is awesome: spirit-forward but sweet, with a bit of cherry goodness. My partner ordered an Americano, which was off-menu, and was his attempt at ordering a light cocktail (it's supposed to be vermouth, Campari, and seltzer, but mostly seltzer). The pour was way too heavy-handed and also tasted too bitter with all that excess Campari, imo. We would stick to drinks on the menu next time. Our server was amazing! She was incredibly cheerful and kind, and even brought our split Martinez order out in two glasses, which we weren't expecting, but which was nice. All in all, a great experience. I would definitely come back if in the neighborhood, and honestly, I would even travel a bit if in Brooklyn. read more

*review is for drinks only* Deux Chats had been on my list for ages before I finally visited. I should say that I've actually been here twice, but the first time it was after an all-you-can-drink late night dinner-type thing at a restaurant nearby, so my memories of the place were a bit fuzzy. Almost a year went by before I finally returned, mainly because it's pretty out of the way/not close to any train lines. But any place that advertises itself as a martini paradise will eventually require my patronage. Now that I went in a more clearheaded space, I feel better equipped to write a review. We came here at around 9:30/10 on a Saturday night. The place was packed, but we managed to eventually snag two seats at the bar. There were a lot of small groups crowded around tables so perhaps the bar isn't considered premium seating here. I got two drinks, the first being the namesake drink, the Deux Chats Martini (gin, manzanilla sherry, vermouth, celery). The manzanilla gave the drink some 50/50 martini vibes, though between that, the vermouth, and celery, the overall sip was more like a fun dirty martini. I then got the 1885 (mezcal, strega, gentian liqueur, vermouth), which was a riff on a mezcal negroni, one of my other favorite drinks. I actually like this one slightly better, though both were solid. The botanicals and herbal notes are really amped up in the 1885 thanks to the strega and gentian, so there's a lot going on in each sip. It's hard to commit to returning here when it's sort of in no man's land transit-wise, but I would definitely come back with maybe a few more people next time and try some seafood, among other things. read more

Grab a drink, maybe an app, and leave, but I would say it is better to do in a group smaller than 4 given the funky layout and lack of table arrangements (unless you resort to sitting outside). The team has taken great care with the space, with tones of hunter green and gold, and a gorgeous mural of two cats behind the bar. It's casual elegance, but it draws you in, rather than pushing you away. Had drinks at Deux Chats on Thursday evening. A new cocktail bar with a lot of potential thanks to a unique cocktail list, a nice selection of snacks and raw bar options, and a beautiful space. Quality: I was impressed with their early returns from this new cocktail bar. I tried several cocktails, including the Kinky Martini, my favorite of the group with its spicy vodka, as well as the Le Syndicat, and the Sieste. They definitely prioritize grapefruit as an ingredient as it was found across many of the options. We also tried the Si & Am a Sans Alcool Drink, which was extremely refreshing. For a snack we had the Beef Tartare, which was very solid. I loved the little seasoned lettuce wraps to add freshness to each bite. The food menu seemed significant, definitely a place you could enjoy an entire meal. Quantity: Fair and strong drinks, and the food item we ordered was perfect to share. Value: $16 for Cocktails. $9 to $12 for Sans Alcool Drinks. $21 for the Beef Tartare. Ambiance: Deux Chats is a new cocktail bar located in South Williamsburg. With a corner location, they have expansive outdoor seating, with two street shelters. They were intentionally and well decorated. Inside it is a dimly lit, chic cocktail bar. It feels classical and European in style. Soft music inside, but it didn't travel to the outdoor areas. Crowd: Packed on a Thursday evening, lot of buzz already. We are locals and were excited to try it. South Williamsburg is in need of a seafood heavy hitter but sadly this ain't it. We ordered a dozen oysters, the shrimp, salmon, deviled eggs and negronis. The oysters were long dead and spoiled, tasted more like mud than brine. The shrimp were over-salted to cover up a lack of freshness. The crudo was a d-grade salmon likely bought at city acres next door. Not thoughtfully dressed or plated. And the laziest deviled eggs with hard boiled yolks still in tact. Negronis somehow made with little to no alcohol- all that and a $250 bill for two people for a casual Friday snack. Massive disappointment. Do better!!! read more
