Open on 1/1/25. Wednesday. Stopped by to see what tickles my fancie and.... ended up getting chocolate croissant, Viennoise - Cream .... and sticky gooey bun. Ate the cream bun, so heavy, filled with fresh cream. Weighted a ton. Always love this store!

Smaller and smaller Detours

They decreased the size of their pastries, here's a what an almond croissant looks like... almost the size of an egg.

This might be Detour Bakery, but it is an intended destination from now on. My first visit came on a solid recommendation when looking for something delicious on a Friday morning full of tasks. I immediately loved the amount of parking and the hours on the window that indicated "730AM-ish to 1 PM-ish!" Warmly greeted by the staff, this southeast Denver authentic French bakery met my expectations and raised the bar. I had trouble deciding what to eat with all of the options prominently displayed and a room that smelled so darn good. Next time I will try the "Peach Thing" that was so appropriately named and looked spectacular. Indoor and outdoor seating, elected inside on a rainy morning. Their loaves of bread & baguettes are inviting (next time), and the open space kitchen yields excellent looks at what is being prepared. I tried an outstanding turkey croissant sandwich, added a fantastic luscious chocolate croissant, and sampled my partner's sticky bun decision (wise one). Plus, they offer soft drinks, which is excellent for those who aren't sparkling water or coffee drinkers.

A solid place for French pastries and bread with a diverse selection and reasonable price point. The seating for this establishment is outside and at times they have music playing which adds to the ambiance. They have a small area where they sell jams and butter and it is a cute place overall. I usually go with the pain au chocolate or a croissant and it is hit or miss as to what the "doneness" will be. I have definitely received some on the charred side which I know some people prefer. The service is always friendly but at times disorganized and I have learned that this is not a place to come when pressed for time.

If you don't come for any other reason, come for the free smells. Everything tastes so good and service is always so friendly

Strazza [strah-zuh, strazuh, sträzuh]…read more Noun 1. A concatenation of street and plaza "that connects pedestrians and cars in a safe and flexible environment". (Glendale Cherry Creek Chronicle, 9/13) 2. A creative developer's term for a surface parking lot ringed with restaurants and drinking establishments which happen to connect said developer's two hotels. Aren't new, made up words illuminating? I came across the completely made up word "strazza" in the 'Glendale Cherry Creek Chronicle' when reading about all the new restaurants that have been opening up in Glendale's City Set development. The word strazza sounds vaguely upscale. It's a word which may remind you of a stroll through the Piazza del Duomo while you are devouring biscotti, one after the other. Or perhaps it is a sensual word which, when spoken aloud by the likes of Sophia Loren, will unfurl your flag. Strazza. Where was I? Oh yeah, City Set. Yeah, none of the above dreamy notions will disrupt your visit to City Set. City Set is a very clever way of maximizing the real estate around the parking lot between the Hilton Garden Inn and the Residence Inn by Marriott. The line-up of restaurants and drinking establishments which surround the strazza is indeed impressive and a coup for Glendale: Jax Fish House, Cuba Cuba Sandwicheria, World or Beer, Udi's Cafe Pizza and Bar, and Big Smoke Burger are already bringing in the crowds. And still to open are The Kitchen Next Door and a Native Foods Café. That's a lot of variety which covers not only different tastes but different budgets as well. Smart, very smart. All the restaurants and their patios are adjacent to one other and overlook the parking lot so it kind of feels like you are dining on a public square of sorts, a 21st century commercial vision of an insipid street scene. I guess it's like a food court too, except instead of tables in the middle, one can park a car directly in front of their establishment of choice. If you can't find a parking spot directly on the surface lot, then there is underground parking too which I personally find more convenient than competing for a spot on the strazza. There is a shared valet service available too, but I haven't had the need for it. City Set is A-OK and I'm sure they are going to succeed because they seem to have the right tenant mix, the convenience of parking, are surrounded by the right demographics, and are adjacent to the busiest street in all of Colorado. For me, I'd rather have the real thing, as long as there is valet parking of course. Strazza.

City Set is the latest and greatest piece of the Glendale renaissance. There are two hotels, a…read moregreat mix of sit down and fast casual restaurants, and a Verizon store. Almost everything you need, really. During a recent visit, someone told me that pretty soon this place will be "the next Vegas". Certainly a bit of a stretch, but one day you will be able to stroll with your adult beverage around City Set and over to the Riverwalk that is scheduled to be completed in 2016, I believe. Pretty cool! So why not five stars? Parking. There just aren't enough spaces to accommodate both hotel guests and daily visitors. While complementary valet parking is available (currently the only way to use the parking garage), I'm not going to valet the car just to run in and grab a sandwich or a burger to go. I think even bike racks are limited but perhaps this will be addressed in the future. In any event, City Set is a big boost for Glendale and a fun place to hang out. I'm excited to see what the future holds for this development.

Very disappointing experience, especially considering how often we used to come here…read more The menu has changed, and unfortunately not for the better. The portions have become noticeably smaller, including the Lions, which used to be one of the reasons we enjoyed coming here. The value simply isn't what it used to be. But the main reason for this one-star review is what happened with one of the servers. My wife and I were sitting at one table and placed our order. A more attractive table became available, and since the restaurant has open seating, we moved there. Our original table was directly behind me. My wife noticed that our server -- a woman with green hair -- was looking for us with our order. I turned around and tried to get her attention, but she didn't hear me even though she was standing about an arm's length away. I reached out with one finger and briefly touched her side to get her attention and indicate that we were sitting right there and that the order was ours. She brought the food to our table, and at that point everything seemed completely normal. Then, some time later, a manager came over with another employee and told us that we needed to leave the restaurant. We were completely confused and had no idea what was happening. We were then told that the server claimed I had grabbed her from behind. That accusation was absolutely shocking and completely inconsistent with what actually happened. I was sitting at the table with my wife, and the only physical contact was a brief touch on her side with one finger to get her attention because she couldn't hear me. What is especially disappointing is that this apparently wasn't properly addressed afterward. We continued to think about the situation because it was an extremely uncomfortable and humiliating experience. We used to spend approximately $140-$230 per visit here, depending on how many people we came with. We were regular customers and genuinely enjoyed this place. Unfortunately, after this experience, we will not be coming back. One star.

Upscale Hillstone sibling with a standout French dip…read more My fiancée and I moved to Denver from the Dallas area earlier this year, and we were huge fans of the Hillstone restaurant group there. We were happy to find out they have a couple of restaurants in Denver: Hillstone itself and Cherry Creek Grill. We've loved both so far. I recently visited Cherry Creek Grill, and the menu has some similarities with Hillstone down the street, but we enjoyed our experience nonetheless. It's upscale inside with several delicious items on the menu. We ordered the cornbread bites to share as a table, and they were great. Definitely order them if you're a fan of cornbread or enjoy bread with your meals. I ordered the French dip, which is elite. It's pretty much the same French dip that's on the Hillstone menu, and I've loved them both. The meat is fantastic, the bread is great, and the dipping sauce is tasty. It's served with fries, but you can sub for a different side. I subbed in the emerald kale salad with a roasted peanut vinaigrette, and I loved it. The only reason I'm not giving this a five is that one of the guys in my party ordered the double-cut pork chop. When it first came out it was a huge, thick cut of meat, which is challenging to cook to the right temperature. When he cut into it, it was quite undercooked in the middle. That's understandable for that cut, but a little disappointing. The staff was very accommodating, though. The waitress took one look and agreed it wasn't cooked, and they quickly brought out a replacement. It was a thinner cut, so easier to cook through, and it came out very well and tasty. They have some desserts on the menu I've had my eye on, but we didn't get to try them this time since we had plans to visit Little Man's Ice Cream down the street.

There's a long, shaded patio, unfortunately not usable today because of construction on the adjacent street. The restaurant is large and beautiful with a variety of seating areas, a well-staffed open kitchen, and an unusually spacious prep area. The menu is interesting with a variety of creative dishes. Too bad the execution is so uneven. We arrived toward the end of lunch hour. The place was packed and very noisy. The patio is usually full when I walk by, so being unable to use it that day didn't help. Our server was very pleasant and seemed competent, but service was slow and she disappeared for long periods. It looked like they were understaffed. I ordered an Arnold Palmer. This arrived as a completely full glass of strong iced tea and a separate carafe of lemonade. A nice idea, but how was I supposed to mix the lemonade into a full glass of tea? I asked for a glass of ice. This took a very long time to arrive and required a separate runner to deliver it, even though the service station was just a few steps away. Very annoying and awkward. A good example of the many problems here with execution. We both tried the seasonal butternut squash soup. This was flavorful and delicious. My girlfriend got her cup of soup as a side to her sandwich, but I ordered mine as an appetizer. Nevertheless, my soup and entrée arrived simultaneously. I hate this. The server should at least have asked how I wanted them served. Execution, again. My girlfriend had the Vegan Double Cheeseburger, a house-made portobello, beet, and walnut burger with lettuce, pickled onions, tomatoes, vegan "cheese," and jalapeño remoulade. She thought the first bite was good, but as she ate it the sweetness became cloying and overwhelming. It was also very bland with none of the promised spice. She felt ill by the time we got home. I tried the Jambalaya Pasta, penne with chicken and pork andouille sausage, shrimp, chicken, and the holy trinity (onion, celery, and green bell peppers). This sounded like a great item and looked tempting when the plate finally arrived, but it was awful. The unappetizing cubes of chicken were dry as the Sahara, tough, and tasteless. The sausage was tender, but had none of the savory depth you expect from andouille. The shrimp was OK. The worst part of the dish was the pasta sauce. Apparently the chef tripped while carrying a can of chili powder and dumped it all into the sauce which was so hot that it was barely edible. This drowned out any other flavor in the dish and is completely antithetical to authentic Cajun/Creole cooking which builds complex flavors with subtle technique. Disgusting and very disappointing. I don't understand why this place is so popular. It desperately needs a better manager and a new kitchen staff. Sad. We will not be back. There are many far less expensive, healthy food choices in the area.

Naturally we ordered 3 French dips and they didn't have a kids menu, but they made grilled cheese for my son. I can confirm the French dip is delicious. The meat was so moist and tender. I smothered my whole sandwich with it before dipping it in the au jus. I was also a huge fan of their fries. It's slightly seasoned, thin and crispy. The grilled cheese was also a hit. The bread was perfectly toasted with a ton of cheese inside. Our server was very attentive and gave me fresh au jus and horseradish for my leftovers. They also have their own little parking lot north of the restaurant and I was surprised we were all able to grab a spot during lunch hour. It was bustling, but not too crowded. The staff was friendly, very accommodating, and the overall experience feels much more like fine dining than a casual lunch spot. I was sorry to miss grilled artichoke season because I've had them before and they're fantastic. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad and it was excellent. The chicken was shredded from roasted chicken, the croutons were amazing, and the whole salad felt much more elevated than the basic chicken Caesar you get at so many places. They also have a great wine-by-the-glass selection. One thing to note: my husband was wearing a cap because we were running late. After we had already been seated and ordered drinks and appetizers, a young manager came over and told him he needed to remove it. I completely understand and respect a dress code, but I do think that should have been mentioned when we entered the restaurant, not after we were seated and had already ordered. Interestingly, our friend was wearing cargo shorts, which were apparently fine, so the policy felt a little inconsistent. That said, the food, service, and overall atmosphere were excellent, and I'd absolutely return.

While yes, you do have to get a parking voucher, Flower Child will validate your parking for up to two hours, so no issue there. Upon entering, the place is completely themed to make you feel like you're in a European cafe with the decor and green clawed foot tables - so cute. The menu covers just about every need or want you might have. Vegetarian, vegan, diary-free, protein, meat, dairy, it's all there for everyone. You order at the counter and are given a number for your food to be delivered. There is no service perse and you do not have to bus your table when done. Also, Flower Child seems pretty conscientious about reducing waste so all their silverware is actual silverware as are their plates. I appreciate this. Totally OK, but the condescending tone is unnecessary. Again, first visit here and I was in a rush- it should be standard at the register to share that information; where to go, what to get. Second visit, I brought my colleagues and manager. Again, this information was not shared but luckily I was there to just get them what they needed. No big deal! But the food came out at different times and most of us felt uncomfortable eating food unless the entire table had theirs. Third time and here I am writing a review. I waited for my food as multiple people got served prior to me. I tried smiling and waving to someone who was delivering the food, and she was clearly avoiding me. She even checked in on everyone around me... On top of that, they seem well trained at removing the table number once the food has been served. My table number remained up for 25 minutes. I purchased an entree, drink, and a cookie- really trying to support the business here despite the lack of mind for the consumer. Not until another woman who seemed to have the outside coverage passed by was I able to get to share my issue. The manager came and offered me an additional side or dessert but my meal came with two sides and I had already purchased a cookie. He explained that the issue was because my order was pushed as completed but that does not cover the fact my table number was up the entire time and the other service members completely ignoring me. I am at Cherry Creek for work every other week and wanted this place to be my go-to for meals but 3/3 visits of service being subpar- I've got to move on!
