Once again a great experience at the Desert Rat in Tempe. Chris the manager is always professional and returns my calls as well. Never tries to upsell me on things not needed etc. I go there because of the honesty and especially the mechanic, Eric who has been working on my JEEPS since about 2012 or so. Very trustworthy and knows his stuff and is the only one who I ever go to re-gear etc. I just had a bunch of upgrades done there last week such as, a new Teraflex axle housing, 10 factory chromoly shafts, Apex Ball Joints, the rear axle tubes welded to the housing as well as a truss, a Teraflex Long Arm kit installed, and a new front skid plate since my old one wouldn't work with the new long arms. This upgrade bill was NOT CHEAP at all. But you get what you pay for and Eric knows his stuff and that alone is very important to me as well as they have never sold or tried to sell me something I didn't need. Other shops are NOT honest like them and not all shops are dishonest either, but its hard to find a good shop that can be 100% trusted. I know for a fact that this shop can be trusted 100% and is amazing. If it wasn't then i wouldn't keep going back. So Thank you to the entire Desert Rat Staff for all you do. Carlos at this location went above and beyond for me! I had an incredible experience at the Tucson location (they patched a tire while I was out of town and refused to take payment because I was delivering to a neighboring business, I bought the staff sodas for their generosity)... when I needed a repair in Phoenix I reached out. Carlos was backed up two weeks at his location and called his other stores and found me a next day appointment!!! I am sitting in their Mesa location now getting a repair... it's nice to find such great customer service... I cannot recommend Desert Rat enough! Doing a repair out of state for our Jeep, a college kid is selling for us. Horrific experience. Would not allow payment over phone so promptly mailed in a check and they held his credit card charge for 2 weeks AFTER the check was deposited and cleared the bank. Ridiculous. He's a college kid! So double paid for the repairs. The Jeep dealer that ordered new aftermarket accessories for us also said the repairs done were overcharged. Oh well lesson learned! read more

I had purchased RoofNest RoofTop Tent (RTT) and needed a specific-height RoofRack for my Gladiator and the Maximus-3 Overland RR seem like the best option. Once we ordered Maximus-3 Gladiator Overland RR in early 3/2020, we had to wait until Maximus-3 restarted production due to Covid delays as well as this being a new product from Maximus-3. Finally, after Tim's persistent follow-ups with Maximus-3, the RR was delivered in early 12/2020. Avoid using this place! I called in looking for wheels, tires, lift kit, bed cover and more, I knew exactly what I wanted but the sales rep Jeremy was useless. Long story short, he understood what I wanted and promised to call me back when he had everything ready. Needless to say this guy would never call back, days would go by no call. I'd always have to call asking what's the deal?! After doing this 3 or 4 times I finally came into the store and was like let's do this! I paid half up front and left because he had to find available tires. Needless to say supply chain is all messed up and it's hard to find parts but he just didn't care at all... several more days went by, no call, nothing. Also every time I called he'd ask, "what vehicle is this for again?'! Like wtf man write something down. Normally I wouldn't nock a business down for one bad experience but I gave this guy several chances to take my money! But he was just either too busy or too useless. Now before you blame supply chain issues I told him I don't care how long it takes, order the parts and they will eventually arrive. To top it off when I asked for a refund he said you have to physically come in so we can return it to your card, (totally absurd) but when I did, another employee happily returned my charges with out even asking why? How come? Like it was a normal occurrence to have a customer come in and cancel a big order and not ask why? Hope this info will save you some time and head aches but stay clear of desert rat Tempe location. read more

No joke, the absolute best if you have a modified off-road truck. I have a mildly modified Toyota Tacoma and they have been my go-to shop since day one. I've had some repair work done at the dealership since I'm still under warranty, but even then I've had to bring it to Desert Rat to really get things sorted out. The level of expertise and attention to detail surpasses any other shop that I've been to in the Valley. Most of the guys have owned and still own Toyotas so you know they are experts in that category. Most recent experience involved a knocking noise that couldn't be resolved. I've been running around the Valley having the truck looked at by several shops to no avail. Desert Rat figured out the problem within 10 minutes and fixed it in 5. It was so simple they didn't even charge me. THAT is beyond good customer service. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Ask for Chris or Brett. read more

I've been looking for a place other than 4wp to purchase parts and have some work done. I stumbled across Desert Rat kind of by accident. Needing an alignment on my JK, the standard automotive shop recommended them and I'm glad they did. Checked my alignment including the pinion angles (which I was worried about with adjustable control arms) and the price was fair. The staff have always been amazing and helpful and are always willing to just chat about your rig or trails or whatever. Ordered some parts through them and they were in the shop within days. I have an appointment next week for ring and pinion and my Jeep and I was a little nervous about the process but the staff really helped put my mind at ease. Can't wait for the work to be done. I am new to the Jeep community, and it was refreshing to find someone so welcoming and down to earth who was willing to help. As a newbie off-roader, I decided to check this place out after a couple of people mentioned the business as a good resource. Picked this location based on the fact they were listed on the Warn website as an authorized repair center. Turned up to be a great experience. Brett and Tim (owner) are fantastic guys, experienced in the industry, down to earth people. Got a lot of excellent info, bought lots of USA made products for very good prices. Found out they do complete installs on site, everything from suspension lifts to bumpers, lighting and diff locks. If you're new to off-roading like me, these guys will help shorten the learning curve and save you money on gear. As far as I'm concerned, this is the one stop shop to get a truck ready for adventure. They even had a referral for Hunter Offroad where I can now get my rock sliders and rear bumper, which are very hard to find for my vehicle! Thanks guys, plan to be back!! read more

I purchased a 6" Superlift for my 86 K5 Blazer from this location. Prior to the order I Informed the representative I converted axles to a 3/4 ton. He stated the U bolts will be compatible. I picked up the lift and drove 4 hours out of town to where the vehicle is located. The U bolts for the front did not match. After informing the company they promised to address the issue and call me tomorrow. I never got a call. I reached out to Desert Rat 3 days later to inform them the rear U bolts were also unsuccessful. It was at that moment they choose to address the front end. Since I work in an industrial Fabrication I built my own U bolt for the front end at this moment which was disclosed to the company during this conversation. Still addressing the issue with the rear end U bolts the Supervisor stated for me the return the U bolts to Desert Rat that were issued with the lift and to build my own U bolts since I obtain the knowledge. This location is a joke. Ive spoken to 2 other Desert rat locations and 2 other 4*4 companys. All have pointed me in the right direction that could have made the correction. read more

Needed a new exhaust for the War Machine, so I went in and saw Darwin and the rest of the fun bunch over at Desert Rat. For $400 they got me sorted, installed and back on the road. Best of all, they got me back on the road before noon even though I was over 2 hours late to get the truck dropped off. Great prices, they know what they're doing, and they're easy to deal with. I purchased a used Nissan Pathfinder and began to have some problems with the way it drove very early on. I bought the vehicle because it was already lifted and I liked the look. I did some research to find out where to take it and Desert Rat was highly recommended, so I gave them a try and man am I glad I did. I dealt with Brett and Tim at the Tempe location and not only were they familiar with the model vehicle, but they new exactly what had been improperly installed on the lift causing the handling problem, they even performed a four wheel alignment in house! Definitely will not be back to purchase parts. Went in to get a simple transfer case drop kit since I could not get one that day from another source. The first sales person didn't even know what I wanted. After another sales persons stepped into help, I was told that it was not in stock but would be in from Tucson by Monday or Tuesday and I would be given a call. I recieved no call and when I called on Wednesday, they didn't know what was going on. I recieved a call later that day to tell me my part would not be in until Friday. Very poor customer service to not at least notify a customer that the part they already paid for was delayed. I would have been much better of ordering the same kit off Amazon, as it would have arrived faster AND been cheaper. Even though I live right by this store, I would much rather purchase online and save myself the hassle of being lied to and waiting too long for parts. read more

This 18 months in the making. I took my 2015 Titan in for some clunking noises in the front end. After over $500 and 2 separate 5 day stints in the shop I'm told they have done the best they could. We think it's the differential, go here... I did not and drove the truck for a year whilst still clicking and clunking. I was fed up crawled under the truck myself and found an ICON logo. I googled it and found SDHQ. Thank goodness! A quick 1 day visit and $600 (more) and my truck is as quiet as a church mouse. Wow. This sleeve place could have saved me so much time and trouble if they had just said, we are not qualified to fix your truck. Go to the authorized location SDHQ, they are the real experts! It would have been better than the deception or incompetence or whatever else it was. It wasn't service. I went back to the store and I told them my story. They looked and me and said what would you like "me" to do about. I said just admit you made a mistake, it's my fault for trusting you. Nope, not gonna happen, have a good weekend I was sarcastically told as I walked out. Don't, I repeat don't go here. read more

Had a leveling kit installed. Wanted a 3 inch kit installed and the guy at the front desk insisted the 3 inch kit was too much and a 2 inch would make the truck level. I took his advice as he stated they have installed a lot of these and know the two inch will level the truck. Took this location all day to install the kit and once I arrived the truck was parked out front of the store and the truck still drooped down in the front end. Told the guy at the front desk about it and he acknowledged that it still was not level but couldn't offer to replace the unit or do anything about it. Do not trust the front desk guys. Do you research prior to purchasing and getting anything installed at this location. I did my researched but then let them talk me into changing. read more

Desert Rat - Tempe is awesome!! Prior to working with them I had stopped at 4 Wheel Parts. They treated me like absolute junk because I don't drive a Jeep and I left very discouraged. On my way home from there I decided to stop at Desert Rat and worked with Darwin. Right away I could tell he was excited to help me out, he knew what he was talking about and he spend a good two or three hours with me looking up parts, specs and all sorts of stuff. I'm just getting into off-roading so I don't know all that much and Darwin and the rest of the staff are always happy to help. I made the purchase and they did all the work. Everything has been fantastic. I've been back a few times for various reasons and they have been great. So glad I didn't buy from 4 Wheel! read more

Stay away. Had them put a budget boost on my New Jeep Wrangler, day after i started having "death wobble". Darwin coaxed me into buying a new steering stabilizer to "fix" the problem. SS only masks the wobble from the driver until it's severe. Went back in to purchase a new HD trac-bar, again Darwin told me that's not the issue and up-sold me Into an AEV lift because he "guaranteed" it would fix the death wobble. Within two days I was still having wobbles. I finally went in and bought the Trac-bar I originally had intended to get before Darwin led me $2500 down a rabbit hole. Sure enough trac-bar significantly reduced the frequency of my wobbles, but hasn't fully eliminated them. Darwin and his staff have been nothing but condescending when I've come in with my issues. I wouldn't spend another dime with these guys. read more

I did a lot of research on lifting my 2014 Jeep Wrangler JK. I settled on Teraflex kit. Picked out my wheels and tires, shocks and all the options I wanted and started shopping for a place to have it done. I started calling around and found Desert Rat. I thought I was talking with one of the Phoenix locations but as it turned out I was working with Brett at the Tempe location. Brett was very helpful and gave me a lot of great advice. Living in Goodyear it couldn't have been further from me without going to Tucson but I went ahead and made the drive out to Tempe because I liked working with Brett. I am very glad I did. They did a great job and the only oversight they made was resolved without any hassle and they made sure I was happy. I cant recommend Desert Rat in Tempe enough and really enjoyed working with Brett. read more

You'll waste your time, I called them after I bought products here and I wanted installation on my leveling kit, they gave me a price, knowing what my vehicle was, and when I drove completely out of my way to come here they randomly doubled their price saying my vehicle was harder. Virtually all of the additional equipment I have on my 2005 Jeep Wrangler has been purchased from Desert Rat. Recently, I purchased a new rear bumper with tire carrier that included a jack mount. When I attempted to put the jack on the mount, it kept hitting my newly installed hard top (also purchased from Desert Rat). I called Darwin who referred me to Brett. I took it in to have him look at it and sure enough, it wasn't going to work. He said he would come up with a solution and sure enough he did. I left it with him and when I picked it up, the jack was installed in a different location than the manufacturer had intended. He had modified it slightly and it was even better than the original would have been. The manufacturer should be contacting Brett for a better solution. It was a professional installation and looked great. I will never go anywhere else for any work on my jeep. These guys are AWESOME!!!! read more
