We took a brewery tour for our anniversary this year and came out of the brewery full impressed with what Deschutes is doing. We started our tour by tasting some of the specialty and signature brews they make on site. You get 3 tastes each and that's on the house. Being pregnant they kindly provided me with some root beer, although I much rather have had a black butte porter. The tour takes 45 minutes and takes you through the whole process. Our tour guide was great and spoke to us as both an ambassador for the brewery and an experience home brewer, which was nice as many of the people in our group had experience making beer. We got to see a number of tanks where the beer goes through many of it's processes. We also got to view the hop storage, chemist and tasters offices and the bottling line which ended up being my favorite part of the tour. Being able to see how it's made gave us an even greater appreciation for this local brewery that is quickly growing. If your in the area and love beer this is a must experience tour, and the best part of it all is that it's free!! read more

They hold your credit card when you open a tab. They gave my credit card to another customer, so it was missing when I tried to check out. So now I have no credit card. And all they could basically say was "oops". Now I have to get a new credit card express shipped while traveling. Had friends visit from So Cal. We had not done the tour so we took them. We all loved it. Amazing to see what it take to make beer. Tasting room was really a treat. Our out of town friends bought super sized bottle openers for their boat and cabin. They loved it. The big surprise for me was a taste of Root beer. Best ever. I now take a small growler to get a fix once in a while. I love going to the smaller local Brewers in town but this factory tour is a must see when in Bend. read more

I've been to my share of brewery tours, and they are all pretty much the same. "Here's some water, over there are the hops, oh - can't forget the malty stuff. And yeast, simply yeast because 'yeasty stuff' sounds bad." Then you're told why they're the best brewery, you get a little sample (sometimes for a price), and you leave, feeling underwhelmed because you just wasted an hour or two of your time. Deschutes is not like that. I almost wrote it off as "too big to visit" during my abbreviated Bend Ale Trail tour, but thankfully I did not. First of all, the tour is free, as are the 4 samples you get. You can (and should) reserve your spot online, which not only keeps the group size manageable but also the crowd from getting too cranky because they have to wait until the next group starts. Our guides were Rebecca and Lou, and both were very informative, good-natured gals with a true love of beer. Yes we were walked through the traditional "this is how you make beer" steps and list of ingredients, but during that time we got to sample some of the malted barley and the hops - where I learned a new word: lupulin - and got to see a working brewery in action, not just some place set up for show. This tour is definitely worth your while if you ever find yourself in Bend. read more

If you like beer, you owe it to yourself to see how it's made. While home-brewing is a great start, it doesn't do justice to the achievement of the larger breweries. Deschutes is a lot of beer, they also throw one hell of a tour. Each day they make something like 20,000 gallons of beer, and you can watch it, step by step. You can breathe in the heady aroma of their hop freezer, stacked with bales of whole leaf hops, you can gawk at the giant fermenters, each one big enough to make a very nice house, you can even stare down at their brewhouse and try and puzzle out why they have just so many tanks, you can even peer into their QC lab, which cost more than most microbreweries. They make beer on a scale that really boggles the mind, and that is surely something to be appreciated. read more

We decided to go back to the Deschutes Tasting Room while in town to celebrate a birthday. Kate told us about a new tour called the "Barrel House" Specialty Tour (well worth the $20...you take home a specialty bottle as a souvenir) and fit us in for the next day. Wow!!! Our minds were blown at how many other spectacular things are happening within the walls of the distribution center out back. We were given 4-5 samples of barrel aged beer, as well as up-and-coming releases. My personal favorite was the Fresh Squeeze Old Fashioned beer that will be coming out in 2020. NOTHING like I imagined. We highly recommend you take this tour if you've been on the basic, and want more info on what's happening in the industry. We had a great time going on a tour here during one of our trips to Bend. We showed up about 15 minutes before a tour was scheduled to start, which gave us time to check out their little shop and start in on our samples. I don't remember how many free samples they told us we would get, but I do remember that we ended up getting several more than we expected, and that they were poured quite generously. I especially enjoyed the Green Lake Organic. I think their selection varies periodically. Aaron gave a very enthusiastic tour, and shared lots of interesting bits of trivia about the brewery and the brewing process. At the time, they were brewing Hop Henge, and we got to peek in on part of the process and watch ingredients being added into the tanks. All in all, it was a great way to keep busy for an hour or so on a chilly afternoon. I would highly recommend it. I mean, c'mon, there's free beer involved! read more

Quick background, I run two production lines that make Dechutes bottles. Came to Deschutes on a brewery visit to see how the lines were running and get an idea of the life of our bottles at the brewery. Corey gave me a tour of the facility and we chatted about the ins and outs of production. The pride in the product they make exhumes from their staff, EVERYONE was very courteous and informative. Definitely had to purchase some abyss and cannot wait til August to drink it! Will be returning many times in the future, thank you for a great experience Deschutes! read more

As if directed by some divine force, I was led to the brewery without any expectations while visiting Bend. I parked, locked the car and walked to the main entrance in a heightened state of awareness that bordered on the spiritual. I felt like a pilgrim completing a journey long in the making and slow in coming. My mood quickly transformed from peaceful enlightenment to sheer excitement when I noticed the sign that said "Free tours every hour." That mood was compounded by giddiness when I found out that along with the free tour we get to have multiple free "tastings." Tastings being the equivalent of 8 teacups of delicious Deschutes nectar. Awesome tour! Our guide was great - she clearly knew her stuff and was extremely nice. The brewery itself isn't huge but we toured the brew kettle room, hop room, fermenting area, bottling/packaging facility, hallway of labels/artwork, and then headed to the tap room. The beers are fantastic - the Smoked Porter will literally blow your socks off, it tasted like smoky BBQ! Overall, just an awesome time. Great facility, super clean, with very hospitable people. Beautiful Room, Awesome Beer and Amazing Staff! Recently help plan a wedding reception in the Mountain Room at the Deschutes Brewery. From planning to execution the staff there was amazing and Candi was especially helpful. She took the extra effort to make sure everything was perfect including getting fresh cut hops for the centerpieces and setting them up herself! Her attention to detail made this reception memorable and she was super to work with! Having worked with lots of event planners, it was a pleasure to work with Candi and her staff! They made my job easier and fun! This place was on my vacation must go list. We arrived at the tasting room around Noon Monday June 5, 2018. We perused the sweatshirts and then went to the tasting bar. There were 4 ladies at the counter and a couple at a table. We stood there 10+ minutes and were never approached/asked if we'd like to taste or pay for the sweatshirts in our arms. Instead the 2 employees were engrossed in their own conversation so the 3 of us walked out. Disgusted with the service - never got to taste the beer. read more

Deschutes brews, in my opinion, the best beer in Oregon. No make that the best beer in the entire west. Their seasonals like the amazing Jubelale are always fun but my favorite is either their Inversion IPA or Obsidian stout. The pub mostly serves pub standards but they are a little more creative with them than most places such as the wild mushroom bruschetta and jerked tempeh sandwich plus their house made veggie burger is really tasty as well. It gets a little packed in there at times but I suppose that is a good sign. Oh and last but not least they make an amazing brownie sundae! read more

Been on the brewery tour, and both times I had a great time. First time was summer 2014, and this year summer 2015. Tour guide for the June 2015 tour was Rebekah. She was great, fun, and you could tell she loves what she does. Tour always amazes me, and interesting to see where some of my favorite beers come from. Tour is completely free, and you get 4 samples at the end. They have some cool Deschutes gear, I ended buying a Drink Tank Growler, and Keg tap for it. Very good tour, although our tour guides didn't really seem to know much beyond what the scripted info was, we still really enjoyed our time. You get free tastings, which was especially momentous since we got to try Hop in the Dark. The most amazing dark beer, unfortunately unavailable in Cali so I will just have to let the taste linger in my memory. The tour is fun, just long enough, and refreshing to see a company still taking pride in their craft. They mentioned that production is running 24 hours just to keep up with demand, yet they are not apt to sacrifice quality by just opening up production plants left and right. If you've never tried a Deshutes brew, get ready to experience a finely crafted, tasty beer. read more

Their tour is about 45 minutes long, informative, funny, and most importantly, heated, so by the time you're back at the tasting room/gift shop, you're more or less sober, hahha. This is for the actual BREWERY/BREWERY TOUR!!! Pub is great also but not on this review. This was a great and fun experience, open to all ages but I would say that if you have a family- leave the kiddo's at home for this as they will probably get bored out of their mind but people who enjoy beer will enjoy it! You can go here to just shop or for a tour, either way you will get 4 free tastings of your choice based on what they have available at the time (they have 8 taps). The tours start every hour on the hour from 12-4pm and if they are full/high demand they will run them on the half hour. It is free so just show up when you want to go. I have been guided by Aaron and Jeff, both were great guides and very knowledgeable! Also, if you want to see the bottling line in action you have to go during the week!! Overall: Cost- Free Tour- Very interesting if you like beer/deschutes beer Good For- Groups, friends, dates, parties, but I would leave the kids who are easily bored at home as there is a lot of talking I have done this 3 times and it remains fun!! Visiting Bend from Chico, Ca, home of Sierra Nevada Brewery, my wife and I always eat at Deschutes Brewery. This time it was exceptional. We are used to OK food at Sierra Nevada, and many choices of excellent craft brews. So I was in the mood to compare the two micro-breweries, food and ale. We had steamed clams, gourmet Mac n cheese, and an Oregon berry cobbler for dessert. The clams were delicious and quite a generous serving. The Mac and cheese was the tastiest we've ever had, and the cobbler was the best. I enjoyed a couple of pub exclusive beers, including a "Hop in the Dark", and they are right up there with Sierra Nevada. But the food puts my home town brewery to shame. They deserve the best tour ever. Tour was neat, organized and well planned. Love the fact they limit spaces on the tour to sign up online so there isn't a huge massive group touring at once. They are very locally friendly and use local artists to design labels for their beer. I think that's really awesome of them too support the community in their own town. Beers were great and facility was huge and very clean. Loved that they give you free tasters to try their exclusive brews. Tour was fantastic, would love to come here again. read more

I went for a brewery tour this afternoon with my husband and 6 friends and had a great time. We arrived at 4 pm for their last tour of the day, and the gift shop/tasting room/gathering area was packed with beer lovers. I bellied up to the bar and ordered a Red Chair IPA and a Jubilale (seasonal brews). Then the tour started, so we all took off double fisting free beers. Woo hoo! The tour lasted about 45 minutes and it was really cool to see where all of the delicious beer is made. I was impressed with how Deschutes brewery promotes green business by reusing and recycling materials and forming partnerships with local farmers and growers who supply meat and produce for their downtown pub. After the tour we went back to the gift shop tasting room and enjoyed a couple more tasty brews. What a deal--free beer and a fun tour! I am a Deschutes fan. read more

stopped by here on a brewery tour across the PNW, this has to be one of my favorites even though Deschutes was before this only peripherally on my radar as the creator of Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter. A at the tasting room is awesome, knows his stuff and is passionate about beer (in a good way). willing to share his knowledge even with the inexperienced. they have lots of deschutes paraphernalia so definitely pick up some swag-- more than just sweatshirts and pint glasses they have golf gear, growlers, posters, stickers, coasters, lots more. i tried a bevvy of beers and only the second dark IPA i've had and this one (Hop in the Dark) is infinitely better than rock bottom's. their Jubel 2010 is amazing--haven't had anything like it, and apparently unless you live in Bend or Portland and can swing by their pub, you won't until 2020. wish i had the much recommended brewery tour but missed it. will definitely go next time. even those who have lived in bend for years have recommended it to me as something they do often. over all: top notch. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Deschutes brewery. I got to see everything! They have some special tasting rooms that I would love to partake in. The tour guide was nice and friendly and answered all my questions and everyone's. At the beginning and end of the tour we were lucky enough to have some free samplers. Anyone who gives free beer is a saint in my book. Deschutes has always given me the impression they are trying to benchmark Sierra Nevada and are attempting to overcome them. I think that is impossible. I think SN has a better technical brewing skill and they have a knack for coaxing the right balance of flavors in their beers. I would look to Deschutes to continue to rise! read more

This is exactly what you'd expect out of a brewery tour! Make sure to book a reservation online - otherwise, you won't get a spot out of the 15 people allowed per tour. (Except for maybe weekdays) When you arrive, they start you off with 4 free samples of beer (or ginger ale/root beer for those less alcohol inclined). We especially enjoyed the white IPA and river ale. The sampling room was SUPER loud, so we didn't hear them call out our name for the tour and they ended up leaving without us. BUT they were SO incredibly nice that they ended up giving us a quick 15 minute private tour. Even though we didn't get the originally planned 45 min tour, it was just as informative and we absolutely loved our guide Kim! We also bought a few 6 packs to bring back home with us. (Also, yay for no state tax!) Overall, just pay attention when they call out your name for the tour and enjoy getting your drink on! read more

When friends come to visit we always make sure to bring them on the brewery tour. It's free and well worth the time. My wife and I enjoy stopping by the tasting room when we have a free afternoon and having 4 complimentary samples (16 oz total) of what they have on tap that day, often serving brews that are not available in bottles. Black Butte Porter: 5 stars just for Black Butte. I love you Black Butte. You've done so much more for me than any woman ever has. ... Oh right, reviewing. It doesn't taste like a mocha or a frappawhatever. It's a great porter with a nice "unsweetened cocoa" undertone that somehow really works. Inversion IPA: Never a big IPA fan but this one almost converted me. Dem Hops. Nice heavy-ish hot summer night beer. 4/5 Twilight Summer Ale: Should have known something with Twilight in the name would be disappointing. I think this was their halfhearted attempt to get into that "light fruit beer" thing that's popular now. But they couldn't bring themselves to do it all the way so it just tastes like Inversion with some seltzer water or something. Still better than the American industrials 3/5 read more

I have toured the facility 4 times and learn something new each visit. I love this place! The tours are fun and informative, your guides are easy going. I appreciate the 4 free beer samples before the tour started! While visiting last week a deschutes brewer pulled a bottle of the black butte 26th anniversary edition off the bottling line and offered samples to all of us in the tasting room. Wow! First time eating here. Very busy for a Monday night but they seated us right away. The waitress Kennedy did a great job of taking our drink orders and then getting our food to us quickly. She recommended a kombucha that was the best I've ever had. The salad with salmon was amazing. Everyone had a great time and I can't say enough good things about Kennedy who was our server. She even recommended a fun hike that we were able to do today. great service and good food with excellent company made for a very enjoyable night read more
