What a cute little gem of discovery! I first met/discovered this winery at a local tasting in LA and totally enjoyed the wines. The girl who poured for me was super informative and explained that they owned three vineyards in the Paso Robles area (love love love) and that they also have a tasting room on one of the vineyard. Since my girls and I planned to visit Paso Robles for a "girls weekend" and I thought we should pay their tasting room a visit. Boy, what a treat! I was not greeted in the tasting room with the same girl whom I met in LA but the one who poured for us was (I think her name was Hilary) also really down to earth and information . She said that the tasting room (the cutest little double-wide) is set on their "east side" Paso Robles vineyard. However, they were tasting wines from all three of their vineyards in one location - perfect for a wino who hates to drive :) We tasted some amazing Pinot's from their vineyard in the San Simeon area (I think she said it was like a mile a way from the ocean or something close to that). Then we tasted some Rhone varieties wines (from their West Paso Vineyard) which is equally as amazing. I don't know very much about the Rhone region but they have some really interesting variety that I am not familiar with like counoise. To end the tasting flight, we tasted red wine blends from the vineyard where the tasting room is situated. Wow. Us girls don't always agree on everything but we gave it 6 thumbs up (since it was only the three of us). I was sooooooooo tempted to join their wine club but promised my boyfriend that I would wait until we make the next trip to do that. I am already planning our trip! So we went in to taste their sparkling wine, which is amazing, and left wine club members. We had been on a mission to find a dry sparkling wine from the area to serve at our wedding at a local winery. We had been very disappointed until we came here, everywhere else has rather sweet sparkling wine. Theirs is a blush made from pinot noir and is up there with the best I've had. It is $54/bottle too. We tasted their other wines and they were all very good and complex. We have family in the area and come here for wine tasting several times a year, we were SHOCKED that we hadn't heard of a place that was so good. We can't wait to pick up our first shipment. We left with 3 bottles of wine... The one down side to this winery would be the facilities. It is right off the Highway and has a pretty law out front with a garden they encourage you to pick vegetables from. Their building is clean and nice enough but is some kind of modular home/office type thing. It just isn't as welcoming as some of the other wineries in this immediate area like Bianchi for example. Victoria's secret? You know what it is? First of all, before I get to the secret, Victoria is the hostess. And she can talk football (San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers); movies (her faves are The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Clint Eastwood pics); and wine. This is where it gets down to the nitty gritty: If you ask her why "Derby" Pinot Noirs are better here than elsewhere you are going to get a very thorough, convincing answer. When Pinot Noirs became the "It" wine in the early part of the last decade, all wineries began growing Pinot grapes... but at the wrong temperatures. Their vineyard is properly located off the sea breeze, eliciting perfect temps. Buy a Pinot and buy a Sparkling Rose Champagne. The $10 tasting fee will be waived if you buy. Altogether, this is one of the more essential Paso Roblas wineries. read more

I went with three girlfriends for a weekend trip down to Paso Robles from SF. We asked all of our friends and had assembled a list-- Turley, Denner, Justin... the usual suspects. Once down there I pulled some Paso Robles winery marketing materials from a stand in our hotel and noticed Derby was based there as well. I had tried their sparkling Rose and LOVED it. I was hesitant to drag all my friends there as it was not on our "recommended" list and I wasn't sure if the rest of the wines would measure up, but I decided to suggest it nonetheless and I'm SO glad I did. The wines here were amazing and at the end of the day everyone in my group agreed that the Derby wines had won Best in Class hands down! Their Pinot has elegant structure, their white Rhone is heavier bodied but has a great amount of acidity, and their sparking Rose was as good as I remembered! If I can pare down any of my Napa/Sonoma wine memberships I will be signing up for Derby, and if you prefer well crafted wines that express terroir and personality then I highly recommend you give them a try too! read more

I visited Derby with a group of 30 friends, down in Paso for a birthday celebration. I wasn't sure if they could handle a group of our size but when I called they immediately told us they could handle our group as long as we didn't mind doing an outdoor tasting on their deck. When we arrived they had all 30 wine glasses already out and a special wine menu printed for us welcoming us and wishing the birthday boy/girl a happy birthday. We thought that was pretty cool! The guys/gals at Derby were super great, had great energy and were willing to answer any of the questions that we threw at them! We started with a sparkling rose, which I enjoyed quite a bit. We tasted a white (Pinot Gris) and then moved onto some reds: Pinot Noir, some Rhone style blends (both white and red), a Petite Sirah, a Bordeaux blend, and finished up with some port. They served the port with those delicious brownie bites -- which made both the brownie and the port even better! I think being a large group that arrived right when we opened skewed my taste of the wine. Despite other yelp reviews raving about the wine, I wasn't all that impressed. I did notice, however, that if I let my glass sit for a bit then usually my last sip started to taste quite good. I think the wine just needed some air to really open up. Derby was also kind enough to let the 30 of us have a picnic lunch out on their premises. They setup a number of tables, brought out some chairs, and made sure we were all set. They had horseshoe toss, badmitten, and a number of other games for us to keep ourselves entertained with! They were so awesome for taking care of us and showing us a great time. 5 stars, A+ on the service! They'll be opening a tasting room in the next year or so in downtown Paso ... while I normally prefer to be out in the vineyards when I taste wine, the one downside with their current location is that it's right on Hwy 46 and you end up watching the cars barrel down the highway at 65mph! Overall a great experience but I didn't love the wine. One day I'll have to head back with a smaller group and taste the wine after they opened up a bit. My favorite of the wine was the sparkling rose. read more

All employees we had contact with were happy and attentive! We made our first visit here last week. The staff was extremely friendly. The gentleman that helped us was "Seth". He knew the business and the wines extremely well. I really enjoyed the personal information they each had out about themselves such as their favorite restaurant, where they were from etc. A very nice introduction if your intrested and if not, then you don't have to read it or ask questions. My husband and I loved all of their wines, but if I had to narrow it down, they had an awesome cabernet (2006 reserve) that we fell in love with. We later enjoyed a bottle out in front of the winery. Its on the highway but still not too noisy. I highly recommend this winery if you are in the area. read more

The Riverside address is right, yet when we were there, the Yelp! map still flagged the Hwy 46 East location. We were there by ourselves on a quiet weekday morning and had a good tasting experience. Nice wines, $10 tasting, we bought a bottle of rose and a bottle of port. We like their wines (and have had them before), just not enough to carry any with us. My daughter and I stopped by for a tasting, recommended by a manager of another tasting room in Paso. The tasting room attendant Jennifer greeted us with a smile and poured us some amazing red wine. The Pinot and the Maneater were our favorites but they're all fantastic. It shows when someone is truly an ambassador for the winery and Jennifer is definitely that. She was enthusiastic and informative, talked to us about the wine, the history of the winery (the owners are grape growers and sell 95% of their grapes and use only 5% to create their exclusive wines). The location is great, minutes from downtown Paso, in a historic renovated almond processing factory-very cool) I wasn't planning on joining another wine club but I loved the wine and vibe of the place so much that I couldn't resist! We were Derby members once before but we canceled our membership about a year ago because we just didn't get the chance to get into the area enough. We went there yesterday and had so much fun with our friends. A super sweet, very knowledgeable young woman, Jennifer, served us. Jennifer has so much knowledge about the whole area and the wine history. We had the opportunity to see the "Library " for the 1st time ..... we never were asked if we would like to see it before. Great marketing move ..... we bought several bottles while visiting it and it was so organized!! Visited on a quiet day and there was only one other customer there, clearly a wine club member. They have a $10 tasting fee to sample 6 wine but it is waived with purchase. Danny was great and we got the story of the winery and how many acres they have (600+ acres). Also have a lovely tasting room -- hopefully next time we can try upstairs because on our visit the elevator wasn't working. Excellent pinot gris $20 and ?picpoul? blanc $28 and we enjoyed all of the reds we sampled ($32-38), most of them were blends. Unfortunately during our tasting there was a wine club member who completely took over and by espousing her knowledge of the winery, right down to the genome of vines and which mixes the vinter should use and how she might buy a few more cases today. We realized we couldn't get a word in and gave up on trying. We finished our tasting, purchased some pinot gris and left. Sad when regulars aren't welcoming of visitors. read more

Over the last couple years, my husband and I have really started to enjoy wines and wine tasting. We went to Paso Robles a couple years ago with some family friends and decided to hit up a couple wineries on our way out of town. Derby came highly recommended from a server at Vina Robles and I am so glad we took his suggestion. Derby is the perfect mix of fantastic wine and down to earth service. Every time we have gone in, the people who have poured for us have been very knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. This past weekend I went up to Paso for a birthday party and suggested we go to Derby. All the girls loved the place and said it was the favorite stop of the day. When we arrived, the ladies helping us were all ready with glasses and a special menu for us. They even had a port and brownie tasting :) I can not say enough about how fantastic this winery is and to top it all off, their club is very affordable and easy!! LOVE THIS PLACE!!! read more

We did a group tasting here with 14 people for my husband's birthday this weekend. We are members and we were able to arrange a private tour and tasting in the Almond room. They are doing extremely interesting things with other, lesser known grapes, too, particularly Rhône wines, including the very unusual Counoise varietal. Magnifique! Why would I join if I can not taste the wine to see if I like it. Everywhere I have tasted in Paso has been an enjoyable experience until Derby. Derby Wines was truly the surprise of the afternoon in Paso Robles! Got a recommendation to come here from Mitchella, another small production winery and it was the highlight of our 101 detour. The outside looks like a trailer, but the wines sure do impress! We ended up leaving with 3 bottles, the pinot gris, pinot noir, and the sparkling rose. Victoria was a wonderful hostess who thoroughly explained why their wines are so unique. Definitely looking forward to a return this wonderful little boutique tasting room! Jennifer at derby is the best part of this place. It is 10 dollars to taste. Their wines are decent at best. I had about 2 fruit flies make it into my wine, one landed in my boyfriends glass. There were fruit flies all over, I had my hand over my glass majority of the time so they couldn't get in. We were showed the members VIP lounge upstairs. The view is the freeway and a lumber yard. Not my ideal place to become a member. I typically become a wine club member not only for the great wines but for the views and the perks they have to offer. They did a great job on this building but I was very disappointed in it overall. My boyfriend and I purchased a bottle because of how great Jennifer was but we won't be coming back despite the fact we only live a few blocks away. read more
