The food is tasty, the portion size is pretty big, and the food tastes fresh. Dishes don't come with rice, so order some naan like the locals instead. I had the chicken palak (chicken cooked in spinach), garlic naan, Kashmiri tea, while my friend had the goat feet (soup). The garlic naan was loaded with garlic, but you don't taste it much when you dip it into your food. I would suggest sticking to the regular plain naan which is half the price. The chicken in the chicken palak was tender and the spinach was delicious and not overly oily. The goat feet is messy to eat, wash your hands before and after. The soup has a little bit of spicy to it. The Kashmiri tea is a pink chai tea. I wasn't a fan, but it was only $2. The teas are premade and dispensed from a container. There are a lot of tables and it always seem busy. It gets packed during dinner time. The atmosphere is pretty casual. Wow they have the best naan that I have ever tasted. Super soft and fresh. I feel like my eyes have opened after eating that naan. This place was a staple during childhood, any time we went to New York. Initially it was always annoying, but I grew to appreciate it as a family tradition. Consistently, we would take back seekh kababs and tandoori chicken because it was THAT good. Back then, it was close to 5 stars. Unfortunately, my father recently went back to the restaurant during a trip for personal business, and stated the quality had become low. He brought back some seekh kababs, shami kababs, and nihari. The quality I once knew from Dera was gone. The seekh kababs was dry and unappealing. The shami kabab literally crumbled like dry DIRT, I had to stop eating. The female staff on the bar just took my order and handed out money for me. So I'm pretty sure she hasn't washed her hands yet after touching money. Me and my wife went there for a late lunch or early supper, after we were seated and given our menus the waitress disappeared, my wife had to get up to call her to come and take our order. We orders mostly BBQ since were are on Atkins diet, the food came out quick in foam plates and we were given plastic forks to eat with, the chicken kabobs were tasty and so was the chicken Tikka but the boti kabobs were kind of bland. So many dishes to choose from, good for groups. The food is delicious but very oily, and seems reheat in the microwave. The falooda is literally tasteless except the ice cream in it. The waiters quickly respond but their service attitude is dry and less than mediocre. We asked for a bottle water for the baby, the waiter handed it to us and stopped and looked at me like she knew I needed a cup obviously for the baby, but she quickly swung around and ran away before I could say I need a cup. Way too much rice for anyone to eat. I don't recommend the biryani so much. It was kind of dry and not so good. The curry was better but small serving, oily, not creamy. I used to come here when the whole restaurant was called Shaheen. The food and service quality has gone down ever since they changed the management and turned into Dera, however they still serve good food. I always get the butter chicken and plain naan from here, both which are exceptionality good. The chicken biryani they serve is also pretty good. My only complain with this place would be the service. They don't have too many servers and you usually have to work a little to get there attention. They aren't lacking of flavor, but it all gets drowned out as your palate is coated with grease with each bite you take. Dera is one of the best authentic Pakistani restaurant in Queens with variety of curry dishes including vegetarian options. Dera also has an exceptional variety of BBQ options. The Tandoori chicken was excellent and cooked to perfection! The combination of daal chicken with lacha paratha was the best I've had. Plenty of seating however I wish they got away from the horrible loud Bollywood music videos playing on TV. Parking Tip: Parking will be an issue however there is a private parking lot across the street you can pay to park. Please be advised that its an ALL CASH parking lot as the weird attendant will purposely not mention it before he takes your keys and then has the nerve to have his tip jar placed in front of the register. Had dinner here last night. The atmosphere is open and communal--not fancy and not quiet--but friendly. The variety of food options was large, and mostly on display including a huge case of sweets. The hostess/waitress greets you as you're looking at the food and assists you with finding a place to sit as well as taking your order. We ordered the masala chaat, the boneless chicken tikka, and an order of plain naan and garlic naan. We learned that this came with a simple carrot-heavy salad with a yogurt dressing as well. With two diet cokes, we spent $20.50. Super cheap. The food was very flavorful--especially the tikka. The naan came out warm, and the garlic was not too overpowering. I recommend this place for a good quick bite where you want a lot of bang for your buck, and also a lot of taste. read more

I have a funny story about this place is I personally not crazy about indian food and I know this place from my x boss (he is from Pakistan) plus I saw a lot of Indian customer in the restaurant. Food must be good right? I had a couple of food (not remember the name) and ras malai it was the most delicious Indian dessert for me. Lastnight my husband wanted to eat Indian food so because of I had such a good experience about ras malai. I suggested him to come to this place and I was excited to advertise it. When we got to the restaurant my husband told me it was the place he had date with his x gf and he is not really like the food here. I convinced him that food should be good because the reason above then we gave them a chance one more time. We both ordered rice with goat. The meal looks like fried rice with some pieces of goat mixing up. My husband was unlucky he got a lot of bones instead of goat so he feels like only eat rice and vegetables :( and he also not crazy about ras malai plus they forgot to put pistachios on top. Their Naan is the best!!! $1.50 each!!! I always get either haleem($8), butter chicken($8), kebab($2?), ras malai($~1) or chicken briyani($8?-$12?) whenever I come here with Naan. Try haleem or butter chicken with Naan or other breads available on their menu. You can have about 3 Naan or 2 Naan to share with those dishes depends on how big your appetite is. Butter chicken is less spicier than haleem. Haleem is not so bad in spiciness, it's just I can't handle spicy food much. So for some people it might be not that spicy. The waitresses are very nice and sometime I had a chance to get to know them personally when there is no crowd. They open till about 4am I believe. read more

I had heard a lot of good things about this place to the point that I expected it to be one of the nicer options in Jackson Heights. However, I was pretty disappointed with the interior. It was your standard crowded place that's fun to go with some buddies or a big family group (if you can get a seat) and doesn't work well if you are in a small group due to the noise. We got the nihari (the most recommended item there) and it tasted decent. It reminded me of my mom's food. I did expect something a bit better, because this means it tasted like it was made with Shan Masala. The service was better here than it is at Kebab King (another Jackson Heights staple). And the food came out very quickly. The price here is pretty reasonable and 2 people can easily eat around ~$20 so that works well when you miss the taste of yourmom'ss food. Next time I'd like to go and try some of their other dishes but considering that Nihari is what everyone else told me to try, maybe I'll take my time going back. read more

Had a Pakistani breakfast at 10:30 on Saturday morning. The room is divided into two sections- one with a TV (playing cricket) and one for families to sit in the back. Service was matter of fact. Basically the waitress sets silverware, plates, and the actual meal and leaves so we can set the table ourselves. It's not bad, considering how cheap the food is. Disposable ware such as plastic cups and paper plates for paratha is used along with actual silverware and ceramic plates. Food was delicious but very oily, as my Pakistani companions warned. They said that food in Edison, NJ is generally better, but we'll make a NJ Transit trip out there later. We had plain paratha (layered bread), channa masala (chick peas in a special, VERY DELICIOUS sauce), and beef kebabs. At the end, we relaxed with steaming cups of authentic chai. It was a nice experience but the food hit me hard later during the day because of its oiliness. read more
