My husband and I were really excited to try this place, as we both love a good breakfast. There was a bit of a wait, but it moved quickly, and while my husband stood in line, I enjoyed browsing the store -- which was very impressive (though I did pick up a coffee mug for sale that was made in China- not what I expected). We both chose the buffet because we wanted to sample a little of everything. The scrambled eggs, potatoes, and meats were all good and flavorful. However, the bakery items were very disappointing. The biscuits and pastries didn't taste homemade from scratch (possibly homemade from a mix- if that is such a thing?), and some of the salads and cream-filled pastries seemed to have a whipped topping flavor similar to Cool Whip. Went to Der Dutchman for the first time and what a neat place! There's a bakery and other food for sale just as you enter and a gift shop with unique items upstairs. There's tables are in long rows and they offer a menu as well as the buffet. We had just finished eating at Yoder's and wanted to do our own Sarasota Amish tour. Dee Dutchman is a good size two floor building with all things Amish. We started upstairs. This is their gift shop. Lots of different gift items here for the family. Afterwards, downstairs you will find the restaurant, bakery and market, restroom, & two banquet rooms and restroom. The market has many baked items, breads, jellies, candy's, coffee, cake, etc. This is a fun shop to check out and you may take some goodies home. Everything is very nice and welcoming! In the back lot, you will also find an Amish Owned Hotel Called Carlisle Inn. So Der Dutchman is convenient for those staying there. read more

Der Dutchman was a place I'd heard about and looked up, so we decided to stop on the way back from Sarasota. The place is huge and was very busy, but the buffet stayed well stocked. Came in because of the reviews. First impressions were very nice when you walk in the front door and the little store was really neat. Then we went to the restaurant. Wasn't worth the hype. Felt and tasted more like a diner lunch than anything. We had the chili which was oddly sweet but not bad. Also spilt the 4 piece chicken dinner which was the reason for coming in. Chose mashed potatoes and noodles for the sides. The chicken seemed overcooked. Almost like it was taken off the budget and warmed making it dry and tough. However, when given the check at the end of our breakfast, there was no comment like "I'll take that whenever you're ready." We were in Sarasota looking at some items for our home. It was decided that we should have lunch since it was approaching Noon. We have a number of usual locations that we normally try, but this time we decided to give Der Dutchman on Bahia Vista a try. On occasions in the past we attempted to eat here but the line seemed too long. This time we were seated quickly and the server was promptly at the table wanting to know what we wanted to drink and provided menus. Given all we had heard about the buffet at Der Dutchman we decided to give it a try. The selections are extensive and we tried numerous items. It has a large Gift shop upstairs, Food and Bakery downstairs which my wife loved. There is an Elevator for those that cannot do all the steps just to the right of the restaurant entrance. Lots of items there but it's a little pricey. I bought some Amish Noodles and sweet Bologna as its hard to get back home. Once inside the restaurant we got the Buffet, but you can order off the menu if you want. The Buffet has a ton of items on it, and you serve yourself. I will name a few food items on the Buffet, Ham, Turkey, Ribs, Brosted Chicken, Meat Loaf, Roast Beef, Smoked Sausage, Baked Fish, Salmon, Mac & Cheese, Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Carrots, Corn, Green Beans, Noodles, Baked Apples, Stuffing, Rolls, Cake, Pie, and a huge Salad Bar just to name a few. There is something for everyone on the Buffet. They will bring you some Ice Cream to finish up your meal. The waitstaff was fast refilling our drinks and answering any questions we had. This is almost 90 minutes from my house but it is soooo worth the drive. I ate from the buffet so I could have multiple things. Such a huge salad bar to start. I've never seen so many salad dressings to choose from either. The biscuits may have been my favorite. So soft and fluffy. I had to buy some from the bakery to go home. The restaurant is huge and also embraces a gift shop, bakery items and other items. The restaurant is popular with the buffet set. Daughter and I ordered from the menu and the wait began I ordered Liver and Onions and Cathy ordered the Cream chicken our meals arrived cold and kind of spoiled our anticipation. For us the lack of TLC is not there unlike another close by Amish restaurant. In short unless you are a buffet person. The front of house staff was very distracted and not welcoming, with the MoD very off-putting after I found hair in my food and she told me it was more important that she get a price for a juice for another guest than to "deal with that". Another pet peeve/ick of mine is being called a "customer" in a hospitality setting. That was very transactional feeling. Very traditional Amish Restaurant with warm friendly people running it. This is very meat and potatoes, as well as sandwiches, for those who enjoy home cooked style meals. There is also a buffet which I did not see, but was told it was lovely. This is not my cup of tea, I don't do meat and potatoes and I certainly don't do buffets, but I had one of the best fruit smoothies outside of my own kitchen. We were a table of 16 and everyone was more than pleased with their dishes, as well as the pies- which the Amish are known for here in Sarasota. The wait staff did an amazing job getting everyone's food out - with the exception of drink refills, but we still tipped at 25% because she was so kind and patient with our large group, and had excellent timing. We were not able to visit the gift shop due to time constraints, but the bakery did look amazing. It's also not too loud, it does tend to attract the retiree crowd, that might explain it. read more

The Disney World of buffet restaurants. A restaurant, bakery and gift shop all in one enormous building thankfully with an equally enormous parking lot. Advertised as an Amish restaurant and we did see several Amish folks working and eating there. When I think Amish I think about great vegetables and that explains my rating. We chose the dinner buffet, $18.99 each. Iced tea was extra but it was good. We arrived at 5 pm on a Tuesday night for an early dinner hoping to beat the crowd. Wrong. There was a line but it moved quickly and we were seated in less than 10 minutes. There is one very large dining area crowded with booths and tables where the buffet lines are but we were seated in a smaller separate dining area near the bakery entrance with a view to the parking lot. It was actually a bit more relaxed a setting than the main room. We still had to wade through the crowd to get to the buffet lines but that was not too bad as folks would let each others in the narrower areas near the lines. Frankly, to us the food was good overall but not as good as we expected. That is especially true for the vegetable offerings the night we were there. Mashed potatoes were offered in two formats, regular and fancy (with cheese), however both containers were nearly empty so we only got a small bit. The corn was fine but not great. The same goes for the other vegetables we tried. Good but not as good as we expected. The meats were good, broasted chicken ( tasted like fried, same texture too) was hot and juicy. The roast beef was also tender and tasty. The baked cod was good too, but, as for the potatoes, I wish there had been more of it when we went through the line. Only got a bite. The salad bar was top notch. Well stoked with lots of variety. The yeast rolls were good too. Sheet cakes and apple cobbler were the dessert offerings. If you want ice cream it does come as part of the buffet but you just have to ask your server to bring it to your table. My wife really liked the ice cream noting it was much creamier than usual soft served buffet ice cream. Our server Tabitha was simply great. She had several table in our mates and was attentive and courteous. We were camping in a nearby state park and enjoyed this trip into town for this dinner. However, while we enjoyed it, this is a crowded and bustling dinner experience that now that we have been there, we don't think we'd want to dine there again. read more

I expected this restaurant to be along the size of Yoders, but it turned out to be a massive banquet facility, bakery, gift shop, restaurant, and buffet all under a large roof. What a surprise. What was more of a surprise was the overall experience - service was so personable and friendly, the food was better than what you find at your normal buffet fare, and the ambiance was family friendly and warm. We got there at a time when it was busy for dinner - had to wait a bit to get seated, but once we did, we were able to get to eating relatively quick.
