Wowww!!!! Japanese cuisine has been my favorite since I was small child living in Hawaii. In Texas it is hard to find delicious, perfect Japanese food and most places just don't have what it takes. Densetsu is a gem, hidden away in Plano on the SW corner of Spring Creek and Coit. Get there before 6 to avoid the crowd. They also have a small patio. The food is delicious and beautiful and plentiful. Their menu is authentic (with a twist) and extensive sushi choices. My new favorite is the Dragon Roll, which is a "baked" roll, which is a California Roll with Salmon and Tuna baked on top with a yummy sauce. Deeeelicious! I can't even finish it myself and with a salad I was stuffed! My kid scarfrf up the edemame, Gyoza and Cali rolls with chopsticks! My 2 year old polished off two bowls of miso soup, it is that good! My husband who is not adventurous LOVES this place and all the food he has tried. The Hawaiian Poki salad is huge and so so good. The staff all welcome you by calling out to you in Japanese when you enter and leave. My 8 year old was very taken by this and though it was so special. I have a child with severe tree nut allergy. We can't eat out very often because we can't ensure his safety due to untrained staff, contamination fears, and language barriers at most restaurants. Based on the reviews of Densetsu, I came in and met with the owner, Gina, who is always there. She was wonderful and assured me there are no nuts or coconut at all brought into Densetsu! All the sauces are made from scratch. The only thing they have brought in is the ice cream and toppings and she carefully checked all labels for my son so he could have a big dessert after devouring a huge meal. It is truly a blessing for my family to have Densetsu. We will continue to come here for the wonderful food, atmosphere, and safe surroundings. It is priced comparably with all other Japanese places, but the food far surpasses the others. This is now my son's "go to" place for honor roll celebrations (makes us happy!). Gina visits your table herself, dotes on the kids, and just really takes care of her guests. I can't recommend Densetsu enough. The food is tasty and they really aim to please, and will make sure you are happy. And if you happen to have a food allergy, you can't beat an English-speaking, conscientious owner (whose husband and co-owner is the chef) who will make sure you are safe and taken care of. This is the one place that serves huge sushi rolls and I looove it! There's definitely quality food here. It's nice that I don't fee like I'm just eating mainly rice from the sushi. Unlike some places, Densetsu is very generous with the sushi stuffing so you can taste every bit of that spicy tuna or salmon. I feel like 1 roll is equivalent to 2 rolls because it's so big. Pricing is within the usual $12-18, but at least you're getting bigger portions. Service is good...although it can get really busy to where you have a hard time catching the attention of your server. Location is far up Plano and almost borderline Frisco so kind of a drive from Dallas, but it's worth it! read more

if you can get past the the waiting for a table or spot at the Sushi bar, or the wait for take out (Called at 5:15 pm for take out and was told it would be 1 1/2 hours), the portions are huge and the sushi is pretty good. The main problem with this restaurant is that the new owners do not feel that having a manager on the premises is important, so no one is running the restaurant. Managing the restaurant is left up the the waiters, take out order takers and the sushi chefs, which results in the long waits despite the restaurant being 1/2 full or ordering take out at 5 pm. I might have just come on an off day but... Densetsu will not be my go-to destination to satisfy my sushi or sashimi cravings. I'm very very picky when it comes to eating japanese cuisine because I developed a spoiled taste for how my sushi or sashimi should be. Let me start off about the staff and decor. Right when I walked in, my partner and I were the only customers in the room. They greeted you a formal hello and then let us sit down wherever we wanted (they prefer if you wait to be seated but the place was slow). The restaurant is unbearably cold and tables were so small and uncomfortable. Even though we were very new to the restaurant and asked for recommendations, our waitress had no interest in taking care of us. She just let us be and came back to take orders later. We ordered the vegetable tempura, cherry blossom roll, and the green tea tempura ice cream. The vegetable tempura was GREAT. Perfect amount of batter and the vegetables were a great size and portion. For the cherry blossom roll: ALL THE BUZZ IS TRUE. The rolls are humongous. I actually prefer a smaller size because it's much too hard to eat. Other than that, the roll was delicious in flavor. For the dessert: the tempura ice cream... just skip it. Do yourself that favor. It's just not worth it at all. Overall, my first experience could be better. Will I come back? This place isn't horrible but it isn't good. If you are looking for a heavy meal and large portions, I suggest you go here! They are definitely generous with their rice, spicy tuna, snow crab, and cuts of fish. Although, most of their rolls are comprised of those fillers (the snow crab and spicy tuna) so if you don't care for those items (like me) then this is not the place for you. First off, although the servers are very nice, service is shitty. If you're anal about service, go somewhere else. It's tiny, cramped, and can get loud and noisy and the servers seem to get overwhelmed. There hasn't been one visit in which we haven't had to wave down our server just to get refills on drinks... but that's just what you gotta do here. Secondly, don't expect authentic Japanese food. If you nitpick the authenticity of food and can't just enjoy what's going in your mouth, go somewhere else. That being said, I love this place. We occasionally bring our children, but mainly it's just my husband and I. We know how crowded it can get, but we don't mind sitting and talking. We have our favorites and know what to expect and we always try something new. The Hawaiian Poke is one of my favorites. While it isn't authentic Hawaiian Poke, the flavors are close (closer than Roy's Poke) enough to remind me of home (Hawaii) and overall delicious. I just wish the tomato pieces weren't so big. It's raw tuna cut into pieces, with chunks of tomato, cucumber and avocado, mixed together in a yummy sauce. We typically order this as an appetizer, but I could eat this as a meal with a side of rice. Ahi Tower- It's not sushi, but the ingredients that come out in a "tower" and are then mixed together. So you end up eating a goulash looking dish. Might not sound or look pleasing, but close your eyes and put it in your mouth, YUM! My husband's favorite is the Popcorn Lobster Roll. They stack a spicy tuna roll in a bowl, top it with a bunch of fried lobster pieces and sprinkle on a few sauces. I really enjoy this too, but I can only handle so much sweet and the sweet eel sauce tends to pool at the bottom and soak into the rolls. Of course this is why my husband loves this dish - the sweet sauce with the spicy tuna. The popcorn lobster is delicious and not over cooked at all. Red Mountain Roll - It is what it says. California roll topped with spicy tuna wrapped with salmon. I think this would be a good sushi roll for sushi newbies. The spicy tuna is just piled on top, so if it's "too much" it can easily be knocked off. The Desentsu Roll - My husband and friend loved all the different flavors coming together... I couldn't get over the fried onions. They're homemade, but reminded me too much of French's onions (barf). The Baked Scallop Roll - One of the picky eaters loved this roll. I thought it was bland, but I tried this right after a bite of the popcorn lobster roll (super sweet). It's also a very soft roll. I like at a little firmness. Kid's chicken teriyaki - I personally wouldn't order this, but I'm pretty sure this is specifically made for picky eaters or sensitive palates. Downgrading Densetsu to a 3 for the service. I came here to catch up with some childhood friends over the break last week, and it reminded me why I prefer to get Densetsu to-go. Knowing how busy Densetsu gets (even on weekdays!), I made a reservation for 6:40 PM and specifically requested not to be seated at the sushi bar. We walked in a little before (not after!) 6:40 and were told that they had accidentally *given away our reserved table* (they weren't clear about what happened--something along the lines of someone else claiming my reservation?). The hostess was apologetic and asked if we wanted to be seated at the sushi bar, which we didn't (since we wanted to be able to catch up, and sitting in a line at the bar would have been awkward and inconvenient), and we decided instead to sit at the bar to wait for a table to become available. We ended up waiting about 15 minutes at the bar, and when we asked if we could put in our orders so that the food would be ready as soon as we got to our table, our server (who was aware of the "we gave away the reservation you made" situation) said it wouldn't be possible since if you're sitting at the sushi bar, they'll just put the sushi right in front of you (ok...... I get it that maybe that's how they typically operate, but really, it isn't possible to make a small accommodation for a customer with whom you've already made a huge mistake?). In any case, when we got to the table, we ended up having to wait again just to put in our orders (and then, of course, we waited for them to make the food even though we'd decided what we wanted 20 minutes earlier). At the end of the day, maybe we should have done more to express our discontentment/dissatisfaction with the situation (admittedly, we were smiling and good-natured about it the whole time), but we wanted to be polite and figured that it had been an accident. Still, their complete lack of remediation (seriously, you could have taken our orders at the bar or at least given us a free dessert...) and unwillingness to accommodate customers they had already inconvenienced came off as inattentive and unprofessional. I still think the Ahi Tower is to die for (literally, maybe, given the size/ingredients), but I'll stick to take-out. read more

I'd say it was a pretty decent experience. The food is very nice here and I love their shrimp tempura rolls. I love coming here all the time, but this time we came and it was PACKED so naturally we had to wait and it was an easy wait. It's when we got seated that made me a little upset.. The lady that was seating us (we had 5 people) had put two small tables together and put a seat at the end and we had asked nicely for a third table because that's what my family usually do to sit down with 5 people, and she just rudely said "no" and eventually my dad spoke up and told her this is the type of seating we're comfortable with and if it was okay to seat us with three tables and she just rudely put the tables together to seat us. Other than the rude waitress, I personally enjoyed dining here for the very nice food we got here and I just hope the service here will get better with seating and other customer services. read more

So we get here at 10:35 and and another couple gets here at 10:33...the place is open until 11pm...they seat the couple before us but don't seat us as they say they stop serving. That's is very interesting being that the couple walked in as we were parking. Shows you how great their customer service is. The lady didn't even ask if we wanted our order to go or not, just kicked us out without no kind of friendliness. Guess we are not coming back. I am being EXTREMELY generous by giving this place 2/5 stars because the food was the ONLY redeeming quality of this place. I was in town for two weeks for work and I decided to come to this place for dinner with a friend. We were greeted right away and seated right away, which was good... and then it was all downhill from there. It took forever to get our waiter (Vincent), water, and for my friend to even get utensils and a napkin. Shouldn't that stuff be there upon seating? Alright, it was busy, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Anyways, after chatting a bit, we literally had to flag down two different people to get our waiter to get our order after patiently waiting what seemed like 15+ minutes. We finally got our food-- the food was fantastic, but we were not checked up on during the course of our meal and had to ask the hosts/other waiters for water. Everyone else BUT our waiter were more attentive to us. After finishing our meal and waiting a quite a long time again, my friend had to go up to where they were ringing out tickets to ask if we could pay for our bill. Another waiter, gave us our bill where we proceeded to pay and then leave. Bottom line: food was great, our waiter Vincent, not so much. My wife and I had dinner here after reading all of the great reviews of this place. First off, the space is small and cramped. If your party is just two people they will put you by the outside wall where it's a long bench on one side and a chair on the other. The table is small too which is a problem since they like to use large plates and bowls for presentation. We got there just before six on a Saturday and the place was pretty busy already. As I like to do when I visit a place for the first time I order a variety of dishes so I can really get a sense for the place. We started off with an order of soft shelled crab tempura as well as a mixed tempura place which came with mushrooms, broccoli, green beans, sweet potatoes, and shrimp. We also ordered the fried tempura dish. These three plates completely took over the tiny table we were seated at. For the main we ordered the red mountain roll, the superman burrito (since several reviewers raved about it), eel sashimi, hamachi sashimi, and salmon sushi. I also ordered some uni but the server came back and told me that they ran out of it. Each of these dishes were also served on huge plates and bowls which was really inconvenient for the small tables they have here. The small table and big plate issue was a problem throughout our visit as we were constantly playing Jenga at our table trying to move this plate or that plate so it would sit without falling off the table. The service was a bit off as well. The servers were friendly but they had a terrible time knowing when to bring this dish or that dish. They basically brought everything to the table at once; all seven plates and bowls. It was really ridiculous watching as I could see the gears turning in their heads trying to visualize how to make it all fit on a two by three foot table. I had to tell them to take it back and wait for us to get done with our starters. Because of this parade of servers that kept coming to the table to drop something new off before there was space available we felt we were being rushed to the point the whole thing was more stressful than enjoyable. Another thing people should be aware of at this place. The rolls people rave about like the red mountain and superman burrito are huge. The red mountain roll is about three inches in diameter to it is really not easy to eat. You either have to pick at it so you don't get the combination of flavors and textures to hit your palate or you will have to stuff a fist sized piece into your mouth and look ridiculous. The superman burrito comes in a burrito form factor like a Chipotle burrito wrapped in paper and then wrapped with a rice paper sprinkled with black and tan sesame seeds instead of a tortilla. It is a lot of rice and fish. I remembered it had salmon and tuna (red) and avocado slices but I don't remember what else it had. My issue with this "burrito" was that the sashimi inside it was not diced. It was three inch long slices of fish so when you take a bite and pull away you will be pulling out long strips of fish. Something so obvious but not considered. We were there less than an hour and dropped $150. For that we felt stressed out and rushed. The quality of the fish was good so I still felt this place was deserving of three stars but they really need to work on the issues I have noticed. If you are going to use giant plates don't have tiny tables to serve them on. Also work on timing when dishes are brought to the table so you won't make diners feel rushed. They do have larger tables on the outside patio but the strong winds are a problem. All in all while the quality of the fish was good there are too many other issues that made this dining experience not as pleasurable as it could have been. I will not be in a hurry to come back but may give it another visit in six months. Until then I will go to Sushi Sake. read more

Holy god. I'm giving this two stars instead of 1 because I'm fairly sure we won't get sick from the food. That's about all it has going for it. This was so laughably bad that we couldn't believe that anyone in their right mind would stand on line to get into it...yet there they were, lined up like lemmings getting ready to be shoved off a cliff by Walt Disney. We had called for a reservation based on Yelp reviews, so at least we didn't wait for the bad food and bad service. We had to chase down the host in order to get seated, and when we did get seated at the sushi bar, it was at the very end next to the register, the busboy, the pile of plates and napkins, and right in the aural trail of the To Go orders and the sushi bar itself. Every 30-60 seconds, our conversation was interrupted by the back and forth yelling of "Hai!" "Hai!" and the rattling off of another order. Ever walked into a Moe's where they yell, "Welcome to Moe's!" like they're all being hit with a cattle prod? This was that. Note: I do not mind being cramped. I don't mind close quarters for dining. I don't mind loud restaurants. But the food better be good. This was not. After we finished our first round of beers which turned out to be $6 a piece (a perfectly respectable price for a draft in a good bar, a total kick in the balls for a freakin' bottle of shiner bock without even the presumption of a glass), our waitress finally reappeared after a busboy saw our closed menus and filled-out paper order, and told her we were ready to order. The food came fast enough - 3 orders of sushi, and 2 rolls. The sushi itself was fine and without issue - tasted like fish although the rice easily fell apart which was annoying. The rolls, however, were huge, oversized, and utterly flavorless to the point that they weren't even worth eating. We left half of the Densetsu roll and my husband (his words) "powered through" the Angry John Roll. On a scale of "I'm eating air" to "Wow, that was a complex dance of flavors in my mouth, reminding me of summer, my first kiss, and the parade scene from Ferris Beuller's Day Off", the flavor of the food was "this is edible food, and in a desperate situation, would provide some modicum of sustenance." I'm 99% sure we won't get sick from anything but as for the quality of the sushi, all we could say is that only people from Texas who have never left Texas, would think this is good sushi. If you actually want to eat good, inventive, tasty sushi, get out of the burbs, and make the drive to Zushi Sushi in Uptown, which is fantastic for DFW and would easily work on either coast. It's odd that my complaint about Denestsu is that the portions were TOO large. The service and fish was top notch - my fish was seriously fresh. I have been going to this location for 6 years. The service has not been always the best, but i still went because of the food. I visited densetsu with my 5 year old son and a friend a yesterday. My son wanted french fries so we stopped at a fast food restaurant to buy french fries, because there is nothing he would eat Densetsu. When we sat down the first thing the waiter said was that my son could not eat outside food at the restaurant. I asked him to please let him since he is a picky eater and there is nothing in the menu he would eat. He would not let me. I asked him why and he told me that it was a sanitation isssue. Then he said that if he gets sick because he was eathing outside food i could blame it on the restaurant. REALLY??? I told him that that excuse did not make sense and it was unacceptable and left. This place has lost my business. I could not leave my kid without eating just because a waiter did not want a kid eat french fries in the restaurant. I really cant believe they would let a possible $60 dollar tab walk out just for that. My family has been in the restaurant business and the excuse given by this waiter was just a whole bunch of BS!! This place is always busy and for a good reason, the sushi is HUGE and fresh. I love sitting at the sushi bar and watching the chefs make these rolls! We love the tuna tower (massive, seriously this is big enough for 2 people) and the specialty rolls. Recently Densetsu has added a hostess (much needed) and they sign you in on their app that will send you a text when your table is ready. I love this because before there was a huge line right inside the doors where you stood for 20-30 mins waiting on a table. read more

I have come to this location several times before and the service has always been ok but last time I went it was a different story. The last time I went I made sure to call ahead and make a reservation because I know it is always packed. When I arrived, there was a group of 3 people in front of us ( the same number of people in my group) they were seated even though they didn't have a reservation and once the host came back and we told him that we had a reservation. He realized what he had done and instead of apologizing he just started to make excuses. He told us that our only options were to sit outside or we could wait for a table. So our reservation basically meant nothing and we decided to take our business to another sushi place. This place is good for gimmicky rolls. My friend's roll was about the size of a hockey puck with a LOT of imitation crab filling. My husband's roll was smaller but also too wide to eat in one bite. The point of sushi is to experience all the flavors together with the freshness of the fish. My eel roll was decent and so was the ramen. But the ramen was the same price as the authentic ramen I get in LA from places that specialize only in ramen. Another friend got the cod, but it wasnt crispy enough on the outside and came with a sauce that was almost sugary. Come to think of it, her pan fried seafood soba was also oddly sweet with ramen noodles, not soba (!?). The atmosphere was pleasant. I recommend a reservation if you want to try it. I have been to Densetsu many times ever since it has open. I LOVE their sushi but have had multiple bad experiences in regards to their service. Recently, I tried to take my parents there after I raved about how good it is. When we arrived, there were about 3 open tables. However, the hostess told us that reservation was required and I would have to CALL in and wait 30 minutes. That to me does not make sense. I was furious because all the other times I've been, I never had to make a reservation over the phone no matter how busy they were. I asked her how long they have been doing this for and she told me ever since it was open. I was pretty upset and ended up eating somewhere else. This is my favourite go-to sushi place. I have been to too many sushi places in the DFW area, but I will always go back here. This is a casual dining place, so if you want a fancy sushi place, this is not it. I like the special rolls they have. What I live the most about this place is the quality and the amount of good I get for what I pay for. Take out or dine in - the service is just atrocious. e. g., If you have a large take out order, be prepared that you won't get everything you paid for, you'll have to wait close to 40 minutes, and you will not be warned in advance that's how long it will take. On the dine in waitstaff gets upset if you are ordering more food and they decided to close earlier that day. Hopefully management will retrain their stuff or hire additional people, or somehow fixes the issue, because sushi are excellent, it would be a shame to stop coming because of the poor service. read more

My fav sushi this side of the metro. Place is small and always busy, so for lunch I try to get in around 11:30. Sushi lunch combo is a great deal!! Seems like they're always under staffed but it's never really been an issue. Dinner service is always good too! Just don't be mad if you have to wait, because they basically have no waiting room.
