Tibbitts @ Fern Hill is a spot that I've had on my list for brunch for YEARS. Finally, just…read morefinally, made it in this past weekend with my husband, sister, and dad. Without a doubt this is one of Tacoma's best dining experiences. Chef Shawn's team is small but mighty. The staff that we encountered were all super kind and attentive. It's widely known that Chef Shawn has a radiant personality and treats everybody in his restaurant like a longtime friend. He walked around chatting with everybody personally, showed off dishes as he walked through the restaurant, and was even happy to let diners take a peek at his kitchen (how does he make all this magic happen on TWO CAMP STOVES?!) The menu isn't massive, but everything on the menu is executed with precision and grace. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted but I've had my eyes on the Lobster Bomb for years. My husband got the "Tiny Burrito" which is quite literally the size of a newborn. The Lobster Bomb was excellent. Generous chunks of succulent lobster and the hollandaise was perfect! Subtle on the lemon flavor as to not overpower, but still rich and creamy. I tried my husband's burrito and the chorizo gravy is stellar. You could easily share this with 1-2 other people in my opinion. It lasted my husband two leftover meals! The restaurant itself is small but it's cozy and feels like you're at home. No frills, nothing over the top, nothing trendy. Just a relaxed vibe with lots of authentic touches from Chef Shawn. While this was our first visit it definitely won't be our last. Don't make the mistake I did and let years pass by before you experience Tibbitts!

The attached bakery has some decadent treats and is open before the main restaurant opens at 3 (or at least that's how it worked the day we visited). Every dish was enjoyed, for sure. Standouts were the borscht (beet soup, and I'm not even the biggest fan of beets), peroshki appetizer, and surprisingly the apple kombucha was knockout! They should really bottle it up and sell it individually. A bit pricier, especially if you go for higher priced entrees, but i would also consider many items fairly priced. Also, the establishment is in a lovely location a few miles from Mt Ranier NP. Alas neither the service nor food was good. While we didn't wait long for initial service to take our order and to get our wine and salads, the entrees took a while (didn't check my watch to see how long we waited) and the dishes were delivered separately; I had the chicken kebabs (both meat and vegetables were cold). By the time I stopped eating (I ate less than half of my entree), my husband got his entree. He ordered the pork ribs, which were the appropriate temperature and tasted good. As for service, twice we asked another server to get the person waiting on us for water and a second glass of wine for my husband, and to ask for our check. At the beginning of our experience, we saw interesting entrees on the menu for breakfast and thought to return in the next day or so and give them another try. After a disappointing dinner experience, we will not return.

We came in at a good time as there were two tables with two chairs available so we were immediately seated and given waters and menus. The staff here are great about checking in often and being pleasant. The bathroom here is clean and they even have a changing station inside. The restaurant is clean and the staff come to refill or grab dirty plates quite often. My boyfriend got the lavender latte and two eggs and sausages while I got the smoked honey ham eggs benedict and a rose lemonade. I forgot that the specialty lemonades are not free refill but they do give you a lot. The lavender latte was soothing and the rose lemonade was light. The food came not too long after and the portions here are huge. My boyfriend's order came with a side of blackberry jam that was fantastic. I believe it is housemade and I need to see if they sell it because it is some of the best jams ever. Even has actual pieces of blackberry! They gave me so much ham and the hollandaise here paired well with everything, I even had a bit of jam with it and the flavors were simply divine.

My eggs benedict arrived cold, and the English muffin was so tough that I had to ask for a steak knife just to cut through it. When I mentioned to our server that the meal was cold, she said it was because of the lox. That didn't really explain why the eggs, hollandaise, and English muffin were also cold. She did bring me a replacement, which was actually warm. Unfortunately, the service continued to be disappointing. Our server brought the wrong sides and never apologized or corrected the mistake. She said she would bring out the correct sides, but they never arrived. We were a party of seven, and throughout the meal it felt like our table was an afterthought which is especially frustrating because a 20% gratuity was automatically added. To make matters worse, they brought out a dessert for the birthday that the birthday girl was allergic to even though she had made her gluten allergy known when she initially ordered her meal. Overall, this was a profoundly suck-ass experience. For a roughly $30 entrée, I expected much better food, service, and attention to detail.

I am very neurotic, and she was very patient, and even engaged in back and forth banter. She came to take our drink order, and if you know me, I always have a lot of complex requests. I started off ordering a boring vodka and soda, but then switched it up to cucumber vodka with muddled lime and mint with soda. Visibly and vocally unperturbed, she took my order along with my counterparts. The bartender whipped me up a couple of those bad boys and let me tell you, it was refreshment level: EXPERT. And props to the bartender, whom I thanked on the way out. After I drink order, I started ordering all sorts of ish. We had, an order of grilled sourdough, which was phenomenal and I'm actually going to start making that at home, if I ever get there, me and my (non-romantically involved, strictly platonic cuz I don't swing that way) partner both had the Cavatappi Ragu, and his wife had something with meatballs, that's all I can really remember. Man, even a my standards the food was so good. I'm very grateful that my folks picked up the check, and I feel bad because I ordered so much stuff, which I wasn't expecting because I went Ham on the menu, but damn man.... I think you can actually eat cheaper at a comparable restaurant in LA... Prices were pretty high. Even for me hahaha BUT all that being said, the next time I come see these clowns, I want to go back!
