The atmosphere has a small diner vibe, and the service was excellent. We had our coffee and drinks brought out within a few minutes of sitting down. I ordered the Benedict omelette with no spinach. The hollandaise sauce was definitely the weak spot of the meal. It didn't taste like true hollandaise, had an odd chemical taste, and was surprisingly too spicy. However, the biscuits and gravy and the potatoes were really good and made up for it. Even with the issue with the hollandaise sauce, the amazing service and solid food still earn this place 5 stars. I'll definitely be back, but will try something other than the Benedict omelette.

We went on a Wednesday evening around 7pm and were seated immediately without a wait. Our server was friendly and approachable. We started with the Jalapeño Bomber Dip. Flavor-wise, it was solid; however looks-wise it's a tad unappealing. It leans heavily into a shade of gray not commonly seen in most foods. The Fish and Chips were very good. Great portion size; the plate comes with 3 pieces. We both ended up taking one piece home. The inside of the restaurant was clean and inviting. I'd check them out again for sure.

It's cozy, inviting, and the overall vibe actually put me in the mind of First Watch. They've created a space that feels like somewhere you could sit down, relax, and enjoy a nice breakfast or brunch. I tried the PB&J Protein Shake. It was good, but would I personally order it again? Probably not. Now, the Cookie Butter Latte Frappe with extra whip? DELICIOUS. That one absolutely gets a repeat order from me. I also took a look at the menu--the sign encourages you to grab one and look it over--and I have to say, several of the food items sound really good. So next time, I do plan to sit down, order some food, and give the full dining experience a try. Now, here's where there is definitely room for improvement: customer service. I wasn't greeted when I walked in, and the interaction felt a little standoffish. Nothing terrible happened, but hospitality matters. When you have a cozy atmosphere and a promising menu, the customer service should match that same energy. A simple "Welcome in!" and a warmer interaction can make a major difference in someone's overall experience. There's a lot I like about Penny Cafe, and I definitely see the potential. I'll be back to try the food and that Cookie Butter Latte Frappe again. Hopefully, on my next visit, the customer service will be just as inviting as the atmosphere.

Whew, where to begin?…read more Came in and was seated immediately but took over 10 minutes for someone to actually greet us and take our order. Someone came in after me and was immediately greeted with water and allowed to order. My server was Joselyn and she was a terrible server. Extremely slow with greeting guest and had to be told twice to bring me and my wife water. After 15 minutes we finally got water, but only after asking for it twice. After we ordered I told her we'd like syrup with our food. Food was brought out and after that the serve just ignored us for the rest of our visit. No refill on water or coffee or any other drinks we ordered. Didn't ask us how the food was or if we needed anything. I had to literally get up and get our own syrup because our serve never came back to check on us. The food came out warm, not hot. Disappointing but not horrible. Our total came out to $60. Not awful, but I could have spent my $60 at a business that actually paid attention to me as a customer. Other table that was also being served by Joselyn had to hunt her down just to pay for the bills. She needs to be trained properly and not spend so much time talking to her co workers. This place could be enjoyable if all the serves were attentive, but my experience with Joselyn was terrible. This was the last place we ate at before leaving Arizona and it put such a sour taste in our mouths. Not worth the drive, not worth the money.

The host stand felt cold and unwelcoming, and the overall energy outside was a little off-putting. To be fair, the hostess was polite when she interacted with us directly, but the first impression was not warm. Once we were seated, Miguel turned the whole experience around. Since we are vegetarian, we have to ask extra questions about sauces, stocks, and hidden meat ingredients. Miguel was extremely helpful with navigating the menu and made sure the items with meat stock were removed or avoided. That kind of care matters a lot. The food was also pretty good. I had the South of the Border Omelette, and my wife had the burrito. Both were solid, and Miguel's service made us feel taken care of instead of like we were being difficult for asking questions. Good food, excellent service from Miguel, and a much better experience once we got past the initial welcome.

The Donut Holes were fun, especially with the glaze for dipping. The coffee was okay. I ordered the Florentine Benedict, and while it was good, it was not something I would be raving about afterward. Overall, Haymaker was a solid breakfast/brunch stop. I would go back, but it did not hit the same memorable level as some of the other places from our staycation.

Now I have the time since I won't be able to eat the rest of my food. I ordered over the phone and was told the food would take 15 minutes. I ordered 5 pieces of the Fish Fry and double fries and my girlfriend got the Hatch Chili Burger and upgraded to Sweet Potato fries for $2+ dollars. I live 2 minutes away down the street. I left 20 minutes after my order was made. When I get there I tell the cashier I have a to-go order and he has me pay. After I finish paying, he walks away without saying a word to me and starts sweeping the floor. I just wait and we make eye contact multiple times and he doesn't say anything. I assumed my food was ready because it had already been 25 minutes since I ordered. I realized maybe it's not ready, my mistake, I sit down in the table near the counter. He's watching me sit down and the literal exact moment I sit down he yells out that my order is ready. And when I get up to go get it, that's when he starts putting it in the bag. He doesn't go to the kitchen or anything so I don't know if my order was just sitting there this whole time and he was just waiting for me to sit down for some reason? I'm in no rush so I don't care its been 35 minutes at this point so I give him the benefit of the doubt still, and move on. Stacks the tartar sauce as he's trying to put everything in the bag and the stack falls over and a sauce falls on the floor. He looks at me and looks at the floor then he looks around the sauce drawer and puts another 3rd sauce which I assumed was another tartar sauce. It ended up being ranch. I wouldn't have cared if he just told me that he was out of tartar sauce but I guess trying to deceive me with ranch is a better option. At this point I would've still given a 4 STAR or even 5 STAR review if the food held up because it's a local business and I don't want some weird bald guy deter people from good food. After my 2 minute drive home we opened our containers that held extremely soggy and half cold sweet potato fries. I ordered double fries with my fish so my pile of fries were double soggy and partly cold too. I ate 2 pieces of Fish Fry and they were alright. I would've ordered them again and I was excited because I had a huge piece of fish fry I was going to have next. However I realized it was 2 pieces of fish fry stuck together causing the stuck sides to be soggy and have semi uncooked breading. The biggest piece I was excited for was the biggest disappointment. The only saving grace was the Hatch Chili Burger. The beef patties were soft and cooked well, unlike the last 3 pieces of fish fry. We spent $40 dollars on the entire thing. And we only ate the burger and 2 fish from the meals. Super convenient location for food that I will be completely avoiding in the future. TLDR: Bad service if bald guy is there. Was told 15 minutes but food took around 30-35 minutes. Let's you guess if your food is ready or not after he has you pay. Waits for you to sit down to tell you it's ready when it was possibly just sitting infront of him. Drops tartar sauce and tries to sneak ranch instead of just telling me that he can't/doesn't wanna replace it. Get home, half of order is soggy&cold. ALL fries including upcharged fries were soggy. Only Hatch Chili Burger was good. SPENT $40 and it was 2 meals that were less than mediocre overall. Normally I can ignore most bad service/attitudes but this dude sucked and doesn't like to communicate with customers. Below are photos of what I thought was a "big piece" of fish fry flipped around and then after I separate the two pieces.
