Denault's is my go-to hardware store! I'm here at least twice a month for some project or another. The store is just big enough to have anything you're likely to need, but not so big you get lost. The staff are very friendly and helpful, often taking the initiative to ask if you need anything. It's the only store in town (that I know of) where you can buy a single bolt, washer, whatever you might need. This is a real necessity for small-scale projects and repairs. read more

What does it mean to review a neighborhood hardware store? The very existence of this Ace Hardware increases the value of my home, I think. The purpose of most reviews is for you to choose where you shop, but unless you drive to Home Depot or Lowe's, or to another Ace Hardware 10 miles away, it's Denault's Ace Hardware. So it sort of doesn't matter what I say in this review. You'll go there when you need what they sell. It is distressingly common for reviewers to downrate a store because they once had bad service there. "I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 5 because this morning I had to wait 6 minutes to get my paint mixed." Sheesh, people. Look at the big picture. I live about 1 mile from this store, and I've probably been to it 50 times. I've never had any trouble getting someone to help me or answer a question, and if I did have trouble, I'd be patient, because the wait is faster by far than driving somewhere else or ordering it from Amazon. Great store. Great location. Great selection of merchandise and great use of their limited square footage. Denault's Ace Hardware is a treasure. in the same shopping center as Smart-and-Final (next to the French Pastries Cafe), DE NAULT's is a handy place to have nearby when you're in a hurry and not anxious to drive to a big-box hardware​ store. not a huge selection but they carry all the basics and the staff is EXTREMELY courteous and helpful. i swing by from time-to-time when i need a screw (or bolt or nut or washer) since they sell stuff individually. went shopping for bolts and anchors so my wife (i'm fairly useless) could hang some shelves for our daughter. they had exactly what we needed. read more

I didn't know that these days you're not supposed to smile. Went into the hardware store to simply get some drain cleaner. Quickly found it with my boyfriend and brought it up to the counter. That's where the associate working at the front register Margie asked "why are you smiling?" To which my boyfriend and I were rather confused at the comment. He then asked her if we should not be smiling? Her response was that our smiles made it seem like we were "up to something". Margie made what should have been a nice trip to the hardware store the last time I will be going to this small town store. You go to a small hardware store like this for the service specifically. Yeah, it's a little more expensive and they don't have nearly as much to choose from as some of the big guys, but the folks working here will give you a ton of attention on whatever type of project you're working on. I came in search of some ant traps and the lady helping me was amazing. I was shocked how much she knew about the topic, but I left with a plan of attack that worked better than what I would have gotten without the recommendations. I feel bad becasue I tend to forget this is here. Then when I'm in a pinch or need some special fastener, screw or bolt I think " DeNault's is right there, Stupid!" and viola! THey have what I need and the price is the same as the place with the orange vest. Speaking of the Orange Vest, You always go searching through their store for what you need and then when you can't find it have to look just as hard for someone helpful? That's NOT the case here. They're helpful and right there to help you when you need it. They also have trinket-y kind of stuff and things you didn't know you even wanted. I desperately needed a new window screen after weeks of awful mosquito bites. After some research, I realized that the simplest solution was also the best. I wasn't disappointed. The new screen was reasonably priced, the timeline sped up, and it fits very snugly. The screen man (yes, there is a screen room) was professional in a relaxed way and sped the job up on request. So sad to see the HUGE decline in customer service. I've been going here for decades. I went in yesterday wanting a specific plumbing item. It seems like there were more employees than customers! An older man was reluctant to help us and said he didn't know much about plumbing. Then begrudgingly tried to find what we needed. Another man didn't even know where the duct tape was. On checkout. A younger woman with long light brown hair rang up 13.83 for two items. I said isn't that supposed to be $8.00? She became irritated and re rang the two items I don't think this is a small business because it's a chain so moving forward I don't think I'll be visiting my old staple hardware store. Unbelievable. I needed a fuse for the cigarette lighter plug on my GPS. I go in and ask the cashier who sends me to Aisle 5 and pages a guy to meet me there. He looks at the fuse, finds the proper replacement and walks to the back to the store to put my old one on the meter to see if it is really blown (it was), and make sure the new one is working (it was too). Spent about 5 minutes with me as if I was the most important customer in the store. He also checked the price of my new fuse. 72 cents. I bought 2 spares so they actually grossed $2.16 off of me. It's likely that's the most they will ever make off of me, because I live over 100 miles away and seldom visit hardware stores. Hopefully someone else will read this and go buy a chain saw or garden tractor and let this small business make some profit. Goodness knows I was no help to the bottom line. 5 stars to the guy that I never got the name of. 1 star to me for not getting this guys name. One of the best customer service guys ever. read more

Don't come here if you're price conscience at all. It's crazy expensive and limited products are available. However, IT IS THE ONLY hardware store in Carlsbad Village. Totally worth not making the trip to Home Depot or Lowe's, where some high school lackey wastes 45 minutes of your time before you realize you're in the wrong department and the kid has no idea what he's talking about. I get my keys cut here and whatever else I need to pick up for the apartment building, and they really do have the proverbial "nuts and bolts" to get the job done. The only hardware store I'll visit in the village. OK - it is the ONLY hardware store in the village but they really "hammer home" the local charm. No map required to shop here folks; a refreshing break from the Home Depot and Lowe's of the world - be prepared to spend a "nut or bolt" more. Random observation- I think all the employees that work here NOW were there on opening day...25 years ago. Yup anyone I've ever spoken to totally gets AARP benefits and hits the hay by 7PM but they are always there to offer help. A strong "cement" foundation of customer service for ALL who visit Deeez Nault's! I enjoy checking out all the odd items for sale in the first few aisles...if you like browsing do it here. Totally eats up time and it's free (trust me you won't be trading in your "screwdriver" for these impulse buys). Ummm in summation - they really "nail" service with a smile here! A Home Depot this store is not, but they cram an incredible assortment of supplies into what otherwise looks like a small hardware store, and they're 5 blocks from home. If I'm working on a home project and need some parts quickly, almost all of the time this DeNault's has what I need. I've picked up electrical parts, plumbing components, nuts & bolts, nails, paint etc. here and have always received quick and friendly help. They don't have lumber and the garden supplies are pretty limited, but they've quickly gotten me unstuck when I've found my way mostly through fixing a thingamajig, and they point to me to the exact doohickey I needed to finish up. You know those handy man chores we all need to do? whether it is fixing some electrical short, need of paint, finding the right tool, repairing your out door irrigation, we all make countless trips to our local mega stores (Home Depot and Lowes) sometimes multiple trips per chore. There are times that regardless how big these mega stores are, they don't care the right part. Crazy, huh? with all of that floor space, how can they not carry what we need? Well, rather than drive yourself crazy, go visit our local True Value store. When I just can't find the right thing, i'll visit True Value and it is sitting right there! Over the years, True Value has been the ONLY place to carry some of the critical products i can't find elsewhere. I don't go here often enough, but, I am going to make the effort to patronize them more. They have been my lifesaver and sanity saver more times than not. Went to this store and when it was at the old location (State Street). The cashier Jan is a real local treasure and the staff of very experienced people makes this hardware store indispensable. Seriously old-school help with anything from plumbing to paint. Good place to go for Christmas decorations and they even sell tinsel. You just cannot find this type of help at Home Depot or Lowes. I walked into the store, 3 employees were near the front door. 2 ladies at each cash register and a male employee standing nearby. NONE of them greeted me as I entered. They were too busy gossiping, which always amazing me when customers can hear conversations. The only person that said anything to me was another customer who said hello as he passed me in the aisle. I did not find what I was looking for, nor did I get greeted as I left the store and I purposely made eye contact with one of the gossiping employees, still not acknowledgement. The Mr. and I always try to go here if we think they have what we need so that we can support a local business rather than going to the big guys HD or L's. The people working here are friendly and waaay more knowledgable than what you get from the BIG stores. Today I learned my lesson that maybe I should just go here first, even if i don't think they have something, they probably do! We are restoring a 1970 trailer and the chrome hubcaps have a LOT of rust. I read online that Oxalic Acid will do the trick with not a lot of elbow grease. My forearms already look like Popeye from all the SOS pads I've gone through. Off to HD, nope never heard of it- tried to sell me Oxy Clean. Outta there on down the road to L's in Vista, never heard of it and gave me no advice on the hubcaps but did tell me about something about redoing my kitchen. (Even though it sounded cool my brain was screaming at me "One project at a Time!") I get home feeling totally dejected- I am going to have to wait and order from Amazon. Last hope I call True Value and speak to Linda who tells me "Oh Yes we have it!" She knew exactly what I was talking about! I drive there and the gentleman who attempted to help me didn't find it but said Linda was on lunch and he would go ask her. He came back and went directly to the product. There are not many places any more like this. They take care of you and if the person you are talking to is not that knowledgable you will be passed on to someone who is. The cost of the products is really not more expensive, its just not the Costco of fix it stuff- but do you really need that? Not me I'd rather talk to someone who knows what I need! read more
