We ate here months ago and had a reason to be in Zelienople again last night so we brought family with us this time. They were impressed both by the food and the ambiance. I did find the food a bit too salty this time otherwise I'd give the place five stars. The portion size was fine. Service was a bit inattentive. The margherita pizza was excellent. Be prepared to wait a while for your food. The kitchen cooks to order. The drinks were prepared well also. We will be back at some point although it's a hike from Pittsburgh where we live. read more

Authentic Italian food made with love and technique. Got the greens and beans, arugula salad and mushroom salad plus a margarita pizza. Everything was unique, fresh and delicious. I only wish that they would put a glowing sign on their location like all the neighboring businesses. Hands down the best Italian restaurant I've ever been to, and one of my top 3 favorite restaurants. It's real food made with care, seasoned fully, and made with lots of high quality olive oil. They care about every detail of both the food and drinks. If you think that you would have been happier at Pizza Hut --you're right. Go there because this is not for you. We've been here countless times, but on our most recent visit I had an excellent cosmo (compare to any other cosmo anywhere that is grossly sweet) that actually had a complex flavor of lemon, orange, and cranberry. On previous visits I've had excellent coffee and the bartender has chosen some really great wines for me that I loved. We also had the meat and cheese platter, easily agreed to be the best meat and cheese platter that we've had in a long time. Every cheese was great, the mozzarella was so fresh that you could taste grass (but not in a gross digested grass way that happens with cheese sometimes), and the meats are flavorful. The bread is worth the extra expense and is some of the best bread you can order. By this point we were stuffed, but we both had pasta dishes, cooked perfectly and very tasty. This wasn't my favorite pasta dish that I've ever had there, but still very good. Because the Chef changes the menu frequently based on what is seasonal and locally available, I never have the same dish when I go in. My dining partner ordered extra meatballs and he always says that they are amazing (and huge). In the past I've had the best chicken piccata that I've ever had, an excellent duck dish on New Years, another sausage pasta with peppers and hints of cinnamon that was awesome, a pizza with braised pork on it that was so good (and I typically don't like tomato sauce but still loved this pizza), baked olives are amazing, and...I'm sure many other tasty dishes. Oh, and chicken livers that I loved despite not like chicken livers. I definitely recommend the chef's tasting/wine pairing as well. I received more wine than I could drink (though I tried because they were all so good), and so many excellent dishes. They even accommodated the fact that I don't care for mushrooms or tomatoes, and that is not easy in this restaurant! We've never been disappointed in Della Terra. Mangia! The outside is unassuming in a strip mall next to a burger joint with a only small sign on the window to mark its location. When you enter, you are greeted with a blend of modern and rustic finishes and tables that promote family style eating. To start the night we ordered the bread as an appetizer. We received hot focaccia and homemade Italian bread with succulent olive oil to compliment it. For dinner our group tried numerous dishes including- cavatelli with squash and sausage, pork tenderloin pomodoro, rigatoni with vodka sauce, and the calzone. The cavatelli came with homemade pasta as well as butternut squash and sausage to add a delectable flavor. The pork tenderloin pomodoro was a hardy dish with tender pork and a rich mushroom sauce. The rigatoni had the perfect amount of spice with a subtle after bite to compliment the perfectly cooked pasta. The calzone was delicious and not overpowered with breading and can easily be shared by two. Diners have the option of taking any pizza option on the menu and converting it to a calzone! I love myself some good Italian food, but this place has anuthing but that. I got the proscuitto arugula pizza and it was the blandest pizza I've ever consumed. I could've gone next door to Pizza Hut and been much more satisfied for a much more reasonable price. We also ordered the fresh made bread for an extra $2 and all I can say is dont. It's not that great tasting and they serve it with straight up olive oil. No seasoning in the olive oil or balsamic vinegar, just olive oil. The only part about the meal I liked was the fried mozzarella, but it's rather hard to mess that up. Nice atmosphere and as a first timer I was extremely excited to try it. Full disclosure, I used to work as a sales consultant in the food industry and know the owner of Della Terra from working with him at burghers, his other joint. But I can tell you this, I've dealt with chefs and restaurants of all types over the years. White table cloth to greasy spoon, zero talent line cooks to top notch chefs. Ego maniac sociopaths, to smacked out short order prepers. And all the weird points in between. So I can confidently say that Della Terra, is the realist of the real deals. Every dish, every ingredient, every preparation, impeccable. I describe the work of Chef Fiore in the way I describe the guitar work of David Gilmour(Pink Floyd): It's as if his Instrument has managed to be merged seamlessly with his soul to enable an evocation of the full spectrum of the human experience through his chosen art. The end product is just perfect. The eggs come from his home, from his own chickens. He makes every pasta by hand. He locally sources whatever he doesn't import from Italy. They cure their own meats, grind their own cheese. And think about this, they mill their own flour for their doughs....Seriously...think about that for a second. This dude would mine his own salt if there was a deposit within 50 miles of his house. Every dish you eat at this restaurant is deliberate. Its not over thought, It's not pretentious. It's the culmination of passion, education and vision from a chef that was actually able to achieve what he always wanted to do. Clearly, what he was born to do. I tend to have romantic sensibility about life. When someone does something with passion I tend to get immersed in their obsession. It's my way of vicariously living their dream with them, and in turn, enjoying the fruits of their goals and drive. I think that's an important part of the human experience. And at Della Terra, you truly get one of those experiences that is transformative yet familiar. And when a chef and restaurant are able to do that to you, you have to be grateful. A restaurant obsessed with quality ingredients and preparation, with some of the most authentic Italian food I've had in the US. I've cooked and eaten all over Italy and a meal here is indistinguishable from some of the best from Italy. Pizza's are made with authentic dough with their own yeast and flour, 100% San Marzano tomatoes and high quality toppings. Just the way they do it in Naples. Pastas are excellent, all made in house, and thoughtfully, and perfectly presented. Restaurant was more than half full but the service was very attentive and the staff share the love of the food the chefs create here. In the summer, they grow some of their own herbs and vegetables on site. Meats are locally sourced. They even have a "wood-guy" to supply the right sticks for the epic wood oven. He offers actual recommendations when asked. The homemade pasta is great. I wanted the Orechiette dish without sausage. Luc informed me that it is made with chicken stock and also asked the chef it the dish made sense to order without the sausage. If you long for Monte Cello's to be back in Zelienople this is probably not the restaurant for you. This is real Italian food priced accordingly to finer Italian restaurant's in the Pittsburgh area. I believe there is more detail in the food preparation along with finer ingredients than most Italian restaurants around Pittsburgh. If you like fine Italian food (Not Pizza Roma) and your mother was Italian and your not afraid to spend a few extra bucks go here, you won't be disappointed. Buon cibo! read more

For those who rated the place anything less than 5 stars: 1.) the waitstaff uses handheld devices to take orders, aka they are not just standing around on their phones. 2.) this isn't a chain restaurant like Olive Garden, it's all homemade, authentic Italian cuisine. First off, I need to say that the pasta with vodka sauce dish I had was very tasty, and the penne noodles were cooked exactly the way I like. But that said, let me say what they're doing wrong. It seems like they're trying to be a chic Italian bistro, which would be fine it was in Manhattan, but it's in a strip mall next to a burger joint in Zelienople that you really can't even see from the road. The pasta dish I had, while very good, needed chicken added. And when I asked if I could, the waitress said it wasn't possible. No chicken in a pasta dish at an Italian restaurant? Also, if I'm asked to pay $14 for a plate of penne, I expect a small salad to be included. Their cheapest salad is $8. Too rich for my blood after spending $14 on pasta. And, no bread for the table? That's a big oversight. I get the impression they're trying to emulate Mario's in Beaver, which is another place that offers no salad or bread with a pasta dish (but they do add chicken upon request). The difference is that Mario's is in Beaver, a town with healthy foot traffic. They can afford to be more "snooty," for lack of a better word. Della Terra needs to adapt to their surrounding clientele: people driving through town to get to I-79 who are looking for a decently-priced place to stop and eat. They are not a "destination restaurant." I doubt people will be going out of their way to get a $14 pasta dish with no sides. With Monte Cellos closed, they really need to lower their expectations to get some of that business coming their way. I probably will not be going back or recommending it to anyone unless they make some changes. read more

This place opened up not too long ago. My wife and I have been a couple times and have left happy every time. The wood fired pizza is absolutely the best I've ever had. Not sure what they do to make it so awesome but keep it up! As an appetizer, the olive jar is really quite delicious. Paired with a good red wine. Yes please!! The service is fantastic. Friendly, attentive, and prompt. The only reason I didn't give this a 5 is because they need to raise the bar on the atmosphere. Place feels big and empty. Truth be told it kind of feels like one of those Chinese food restaurants that mainly deliver but have a few tables to eat in. Don't let that stop you from checking this place out though. I never expected to find world-class Italian food in Zelienople, but there it is. The flavors of everything we tried were amazing. Beans and Greens is not really a dish I'd try on my own, but my date loves it, so we ordered it. I was amazed at the flavor. The wedding soup was non-traditional, but light with a lot of shredded chicken. The arugula salad was very light but had so much tangy/sweet flavor. The puttanesca was perfectly cooked al dente pasta with a tangy tomato sauce and salty olives. Puttanesca is one of my favorite pasta dishes, but it's hard to find on most menus. I was so excited to try it and it was one of the best I've ever had. For desert we had the little fried dough balls, and again, they were very light and delicious and the portion was huge. The owner is highly trained and has a passion for food and introducing people to new dishes and real Italian preparations. This is not chain Italian food. It's a small place that doesn't scream Italian. It's subdued and was quiet the night we were there. The drink specials focus on Italian cocktails and there's a nice little selection of wines. I've eaten at some amazing famous Italian restaurants, including Mozza Osteria and Pizzeria Mozza in Los Angeles, and the food at Della Terra was in the same league or better than any of them. read more

Just had dinner for the first time here. I'm really impressed! Sadly, the Pittsburgh region lacks for great Italian bistro fare. Thankfully, Della Terra exists! Quick roundup: - Drinks: we had a negroni and a bottle of Chianti. The negroni was huge and very well-mixed. The chianti was nice and surprisingly affordable. - Food: we had the calamari, agro dolce style. A really nice and well executed twist on calamari fritti. Huge portion, and perfectly breaded. Wow! After that, we had the arugula/prosciutto pizza and the bucatini amatriciana. The pizza is a nicely done neopolitan style with very fresh and delicious arugula. It's great to have this kind of restaurant in this neck of the woods that you'd only usually find in the city. Left hungry and offended. Should have turned around the minute I noticed only two tables fully (on a Saturday night) a large groupon sign on the door. Finding the place was a challenge given there is no lighted sign. Got the meatballs, chick peas and bean apps which were ok. Not quite worth $7 each but they were edible. Pasta dishes were ok but with the log cabin and bravo nearby they aren't anything special. The pizza was the bombshell. I ordered a margarita and it came out half burn on one side and the entire bottom was scorched black. This was more than a lazy cook that added too much flour to the bottom and forgot to turn it when cooking. My waitress said that was the was the pizza comes out. I walked the pizza over to the cook and as I showed him, he was shocked when I showed him the bottom and said that he would make me another. 10 minutes later I got a pizza 70% of the size of the first one and burnt again. I told the server who took it away and never brought the manager over. $14 charge for something I couldn't eat. The dough was not the authentic Italian. If you are looking for a play that knows where Italy is on the map, go somewhere else. read more

Visited on Friday night. Called for reservations en route, they rearranged a few tables, and sat us right away. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. We heard the meatball appetizer was not to be missed and it should not be. They were delicious. We shared a pasta entree and the specialty pizza, which was smoked mozzarella and soppresatta. Very good. The drinks were very strong, but they did their best to make sure everyone was satisfied. I had a glass of Montepulciano, which was reasonably priced. All in all, we enjoyed and will definitely return. read more

Who would have thought that one of the best Italian restaurants in the region would be in the middle of small town Zelienople? I went on a recommendation and was a bit skeptical but this place far exceeded my expectations. Food was absolutely delicious and well prepared, service was attentive, great drink menu, and outstanding use of an old bank to create a cozy atmosphere. All pastas are homemade and dishes are a bit of an eclectic twist on Italian favorites. I'd give this place 4.5 stars rather than 5 since the menu is a bit limited, but a minor gripe. So lucky to have a great Italian restaurant in our town. We have been there a least a dozen times and always come away satisfied. When Chef Ben's at the wood fired oven you can bet your pizza will be perfect. Try the vodka pizza, outstanding! Meatballs are a dinner in themselves along with the marinated olives. Try the deep fried pasta or calzone, just one more way to eat something deep fried. I've always said that I love something prepared , and Fiore and his chefs do just that. Don't expect bread and salad with your meal, not needed. We usually go on a week night and I have noticed things getting busier, may be a sign things are good. Service has been good so far. My husband and I moved to Zelienople in July, and we have been trying all the restaurants in the area. We decided to go to Della Terra last night. We loved the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant. We had made a reservation and were seated right away at our reservation time. No complaints about staff - all friendly. I ordered a glass of wine, and my husband ordered a beer. The glass of wine (which was $11) was only about 4 oz., smaller than a typical glass of wine. We then ordered bread and a side salad. This took about 30 minutes to come from the kitchen. The bread was very undercooked and chewy, but the salad was delicious. Then we ordered a pasta dish and pizza for dinner. These came out just as we finished our starter. Both dishes were good, but not great. Unfortunately, we were just not blown away with the food as I would have expected with the price of the food. Our bill came to almost $80. In addition, the timing of the food was off and we wished our starter came sooner and the starter and main dishes were spread apart. I know something like that can't always be changed but just something to mention. We wished that we loved this as its one of the nicer restaurants in our area, but we probably won't be back. read more

I had an ABSOLUTELY perfect Neopolitan pizza last night with fontina, mushrooms, and prosciutto. The crust was perfectly char spotted on the edges and bottom, the dough was delicious all by itself with a perfect rise both in the body of the pizza and the circumference. Perfection. Went before Christmas with a group of five and we each got different things and ended up sharing them all so we could try as much as possible. Everything we had was fantastic in my opinion. I would ignore any not good review from people who are probably expecting Olive Garden type Italian. This place is as traditional as it gets and it's great for that. I was going to give this place a 3 star review, but the food was very good. I ordered the gnocchi and my wife ordered the mezzaluna. Mezzaluna came as advertised and was good however, could have been seasoned slightly better. It felt a little like eating an Italian Perpogi which I am not sure if that was exactly the intention. Nonetheless, pasta was cooked well and the food tasted good. The gnocchi was very good. The only issue was they used a very healthy portion of mozzarella cheese so it was a dense meal haha. We ordered baked olives which were probably my favorite part of the meal and polenta fries which my son loved. My son ordered a mini pepperoni pizza. He normally fights to eat (3 years old) but ate pretty much all of the polenta fries and all of his pizza.....so I will say that is a slam dunk for the restaurant. The problem with this place is they adopt some dated "high end" restaurant policies. They ask for a credit card on file to charge you for canceling a reservation and they added a tip to our bill without letting us know (not that we wouldn't have given them a tip but it was portrayed as a standard in their restaurant and honestly just felt a little cheap). Also, their wine is poured at a ridiculous portion. It is like 2 shots of wine in the bottom of a glass. It is just dumb. It's your house wine and not a very expensive wine, give your guests a full glass haha. So the food was great, we would definitely come back, but honestly the restaurant should lose the ridiculous policies. The days of a "fancy" restaurant having insane policies are over. Provide well cooked, good tasting food that is honest to your background and provide a comfortable atmosphere. This place has both but the dated policies detract from that. read more

The atmosphere is fantastic! I loved the aesthetic. However, I stopped in for tiramisu (nothing else), and basically paid $6.00 for what tastes like sponge cake with chocolate sauce on it. They clearly skimped on the espresso soak, the mascarpone, and the cocoa powder (presumably the pricier portions of the dessert). I've honestly probably never been more disappointed with tiramisu and I was really looking forward to finding some closer than Pittsburgh! I will probably go again to try their entrees, but the dessert left me very underwhelmed and wishing I'd saved my money. read more
