I really don't understand what the hype is about with this place. Yes, they have 150 flavors of gelato, but what's the point if they're not good? When I went in, everything looked freezer burned, like it had either been there for a really long time or just wasn't being stored at the right temperature. I tried the hazelnut and the tiramisu gelato, and they were both awful. They tasted strongly of artificial vanilla, with that sort of alcohol-y aftertaste to them, and not in a good way. I had Giolitti first and the next day tried this, and I liked the flavors I had here way better (with the exception that I think the pistachio at Giolitti was better). In my opinion, the quality of gelato was not sacrificed with the abundant quality offering. I also like how they present the flavors by placing the main ingredient in front. The staff was also more friendly than other gelato places, granted I went after late dinner when there weren't as many people so I can imagine it being more hectic during popular times. We picked a milliefrugio (however it's spelled) mouse and a Nutella gelato. They didn't taste that great. So it was the worst 2.50€ we've spent. I recommend going to Frigidarium! Buenasera! I visited this location a few days ago after a night out in the city. This is a very popular location with tons of tourists, didn't seem to matter the time there was always a line! The entrance is very welcoming with a wide variety of candy. You must pay for your gelato before ordering, the cashier will give you a receipt and you have to take it behind the counter. The first time, it was very crowded and I did not bother asking to try flavors. So I am not sure if sampling is allowed. During this visit I tried the strawberry and chocolate. The strawberry was very refreshing not too sweet. Chocolate on the other hand was very rich! Depending what mood your in, I would not recommend getting multiple scoops of it. On the second visit I ordered pineapple and strawberry. Pineapple also very refreshing and it also had chunks of pineapple in, pleasant to bite into. The pistachio and amarena are both just so-so; in fact, the pistachio was quite disappointing. There's no nutty pistachio taste at all. The strawberry sorbet was decent. Absolutely excellent! Whole section of soy icecream a (not just gelati that has no milk in, actual icecream) with lots of flavour choices. Texture was perfect. I had a scoop each of strawberry and chocolate. Neither was overly sweet (positive in my book) and chocolate was rich and creamy. There is list of ingredients on the soy cabinet (in Italian so know your allergies in Italian). I've had no problem so far being dairy intolerant. They are sweetened with fructose so you're out of luck if you have the double allergy but as far as I remember no gluten. Service was not friendly but still attentive. How this establishment in a city filled with gelateria gets such high rating is beyond me. Maybe it's the 150 flavors they offer? So what if only select few are good. This was definitely the worst gelateria we went to. First, it's like a zoo in there and you pay first. We got 3 cones with 2 scoops each. I head to another line to get the gelato. My kids each wanted to try one of the 150 flavors they are touted to have. The server said "only one taste". What??!! You have 150 flavors, and we are buying 6 scoops in 3 cones, and only one taste? Should it be my daughter or son who gets to try? I guess he generously allowed us a second one. Then after that, gave us the wrong flavor for one of the cones, takes it back, chucks it and clearly annoyed. Maybe they should decrease the flavors so they won't get confused and what a waste for insisting on the cone back to chuck it. This was the only place where my kids didn't finish their gelato. This is my first Italy review, and what better way to start by reviewing a place that serves one of the most popular desserts in Italy: gelato. This place was recommended to me by an American currently living in Rome and he suggested this place to me if I wanted to get some gelato or coffee. Despite the somewhat negative reviews that the local Italians have on this place, I actually liked eating the gelato here, and the sandwiches they serve in the cafe are not bad and probably the most inexpensive I could find during my short visit to Rome. One thing I am really impressed is the selection of gelato. This is probably the biggest place I have been to with a huge gelato selection, probably more than 40 flavours. Unfortunately, based on my experience, the staff told me that I cannot sample any of the flavours for free before ordering. If they could offer that, it could be a great place to get gelato. The staff can speak English. The flavours I got were the Crema Primavera and the Stracciatella al Cioccolato. The Crema Primavera is a mix of gelato and probably some cake batter and Strawberries. The Stracciatella al Cioccolato is a vanilla gelato mixed with some chocolate fudge. I really liked the Strawberry shortcake and creamy taste of the Crema Primavera, The Stracciatella al Cioccolato was a little icy in the taste. I really liked the mix of chocolate and vanilla. There was a slight artificial aftertaste in the cream and the chocolate, but it was still a good gelato. The sandwiches are not bad here. I remember getting a grilled chicken sandwich with sliced roasted cucumbers on wheat bread. It was decently good, but the chicken lacked a little flavour and the bread needed to be a little fresher. If I came here for the sandwiches, I would have given this place 3 Stars out of 5. One great thing about this place is that it is located near the Pantheon, a major historic site you have to see in Rome after visiting the Vatican, Colosseo, the Forum, and the Fontana di Trevi. Overall, I thought I had some of the most unique gelato I had compared to the gelato I had back home, despite what the local Italians have said about this place. It's definitely better than the gelato back in Boston but I think a lot of tourists come here. Will I come back here again if I come back to Rome? If the local Roman Italian population could suggest to me better places in Rome for great and inexpensive gelato and sandwiches. read more

For a place that has over 150 flavors of gelato I wasn't expecting much. However, Gelateria Della Palma offered delicious scoops of gelato, no matter what flavor you got (except for a funky peanut butter, but kudos to them for catering to our weird American tastes). I had stracciatella, coffee, and giandujia, and loved every bite. There are seats all over the store if you want to enjoy your ice cream inside, and also ample space to just stand and eat. Downsides are the workers are a bit gruff, the scoops aren't as generous as other gelaterias, and you have to pay to use the bathroom. 35 years ago my wife and I were fortunate enough to attend Loyola in Rome. While giolitti was and is amazing and certainly the most popular, I always preferred della Palma. They have more flavors and their gelato is a bit better in my opinion and the crowd is noticeably smaller. I was so thrilled to find this again. Via Maddalena just off piazza rotunda via pantheon. This place has been on our list as a must do every time we have visited Rome. It's in a great location near the Pantheon and the selection is fabulous. There are so many options it will make your head spin. Part of the fun is just the overall atmosphere and bizarre choices of gelato. I've had better "artiginale" gelato but not a better overall experience. It really does help your experience to know what you are doing upon entry. Go to the register and make your selection of your size of cone/scoops, pay, and then hand your receipt to the server and tell them what kind of gelato you'd like. Then walk yourself to the Pantheon and enjoy the atmosphere while you sit people watching and looking at the fake Roman guards taking photos with tourists. You have to pay before you order, and they reluctantly give you one sample if you ask.
