Soy sauce chicken and roast pork over ho fun noodles
Huiwen C.

Solid, affordable, no frills restaurant in Chinatown! There is plenty of seating, food is good, and no need to wait in a long line. The cha siu is delicious with a nice balance of fatty and lean meat. Soy sauce chicken is tender and has a nice salty umami. The noodle soups are surprisingly quite delicious with a clean, light broth. The siu mai is very meaty and gigantic.

Duck plate to go
Yvette G.

I got duck on rice to go and it tasted good, nothing exceptional though. The duck was very boney and there were many tiny bone particles all over the piece of meat. Also there was very little bok choy. Their prices aren't the cheapest compared to other restaurants in China town.

The food was also good ( probably deserves 4* but gets the bump for design). I had the peanut butter dumplings, which I didn't love. The sauce was a little watery. Super modern and clean with very high ceilings, bright orange and green trim over white walls. Amazing logo, specialty packaging for each genre of dish. Very Instagrammable and by design; I imagine. Also has a little bit of a modern Hong Kong cafe. Friendly counter person and a great hustle bustle vibe. Upon an subsequent visit I can now say that the dim sums I mentioned above are spot on and the salt and pepper chicken rice bowl was also no slouch. I preferred the appetizers between the two and look forward to trying more of their focused and fun menu. Love the signature chopsticks and attention to packaging detail. They've got it going on!

The hand pulled noodles here are so good. My partner and I got the small bowls (braised beef and lamb noodle soups), but the portions are HUGE. Highly recommend going for noodle style 6 (thickest, more chewy) or 4. We also got the pork and cabbage dumplings, which are super juicy. This meal was very filling; we could've done without the dumplings, but they're too good to pass up. Service was ok since only one person was handling most FOH procedures. Atmosphere was also fine. It was just really warm, even with the multiple fans running (open doors, no AC), but it was to be expected with the pots of noodles cooking in the front. Since everything is so tasty and affordable, we'll try to make a stop every time we visit :) (Having trouble uploading photos - check Google review) BRAISED BEEF SOUP NOODLE (S) - $13.99 CAD LAMB SOUP NOODLE (S) - $14.99 CAD PORK AND CABBAGE DUMPLINGS (15) - $11.99 CAD

Old School Cantonese food in the heart of Montreal's Chinatown…read more It's been a while since I've had complimentary pork bone and vegetable soup and seen white plastic sheeted table tops for easy cleanup. LOL. Portions are family style so bring a group with you to share. Salt and Pepper Pork Chop - easily the best dish, great crunch and great flavor. Snow peas sautéed with Garlic was clean, fresh and crunchy. Garlic flavor wasn't overly done. Beef Stew over Baby Bok Choy was tender and beefy. The Baby Bok Choy was hidden underneath in my picture, but it was there. There was also beef tendons as well which I always enjoy. Salt and Pepper Squid was a huge portion and similar to Pork, very crunchy. This was a huge portion. Got seated right away in a packed restaurant on a Friday evening. Service was quick and friendly (except for one dude who took exception to me want to pack my own leftovers). LOL.

I was expecting a more flavored experience and maybe that is not what they do or I could have ordered differently. The menu is huge so it is hard to know where to start. We went here because of the good Yelp reviews. Were we arrived in Chinatown there were many other places that looked great, so we loitered at the door for a minute while deciding what to do. As we loitered a family came out and noticed us and asked if were were going to Keung Kee. We said we were thinking about it and they said just go, it is the best restaurant in Chinatown. Sold. We went in, up the stairs, waited a bit, and got a table. This is the kid of place you need to bring a lot of people because that is whet it is built for, the menu is extensive, and the portions are huge. We puzzled over the menu then ordered our food. We wanted a bottle of cold sake and the waiter brought it in an ice bucket. Nice. We started with the pork dumplings. The dumplings were very goof but came in a hot thick sweet peanut sauce. With a lighter sauce these would have been outstanding. The scallop was huge and had a bunch of stuff on it. There was some good scallop flavor but it was masked with all the stuff that tasted like old oil. The noodle dish was good but also had some old oil flavor coming from somewhere. All the meats and vegetables were nice and fresh but the good sauce I think was the source of the oil. We saw a table next to us had the pork chops and was asked, what are those? So we got that too. The chops were thin bone in with a batter fried then soaked in a vinegar sauce. These would have been good as our only item with a bowl of rice. Our co-eaters there had many good looking things. I would give this a try again but would bring a few more people so we could try more stuff. Total for all that including the sake was $100 Canadian. Not bad!

I loved the modern calligraphy art on the walls and the clear love of making and serving dumplings at this shop. It was a no frills ordering experience and cash only. Let's keep things simple so you can get your face in some dumplings fast! We ordered wonton soup dumplings (chicken and shrimp). We also got the pork original soup dumplings followed by the pork and crab soup dumplings. Everything came out quickly and nice and piping hot . The size of the dumplings were good along with sufficient soup in them! The cabbage salad also was delicious with a nice horseradish(?) kick to it! We've been to many soup dumpling places in multiple cities and Mai Xiang Yuan is definitely one of our top picks

One important thing to note: this place is cash‑only, and there's an ATM right at the entrance. That was literally the first thing the employee told us when we walked in, which felt a bit off‑putting. The dumplings themselves were great, and we ordered beers to go with the meal. However, the payment experience was not good. He quoted the total as 70 CAD and told us that was 62 USD since we said we had USD. When we calculated it ourselves, it came out to 49 USD. After we pointed that out, he claimed the "foreign transaction fees go up and down with inflation," which didn't make sense. It felt like we were almost being overcharged. So we ended up getting CAD from the ATM machine outside and paid him, however, we didn't appreciate his dishonesty and felt like he was trying to scam us.

The service was good. They took our order and brought out our food. A bowl of rice is not included with entrees. We ordered sweet and sour chicken, beef chow fun, and pan fried dumplings. Sweet and sour chicken was ok, the sauce was good, I just would've liked a tad less breading on the chicken. The noodles were what I expected with beef, bean sprouts and green onions. We got the deep fried pork wontons ($5), crispy shrimps ($17.95) and house noodles with beef ($15.95). The fried wontons were really crispy. The wonton wrappers were all blistery. My only complaint is that the amount of ground pork in each wonton was very little, but I guess considering the price, I guess it's to be expected. Luckily the house noodles with beef had a good amount of beef in it. The beef was lean and tender. The noodles were a good texture and there was also broccoli, Bok Choy, onions, cabbage and carrots in it. This was my favourite of the 3 dishes we had. The shrimps were tasty too, but I felt less bang for our buck since the portion was small. The shrimps were crispy and there was diced onions and bell peppers mixed in. There were chili flakes too, so it was a bit spicy. Service was really efficient. Our food came out in record time. They also gave us 2 refillable bottles of water and as soon as we emptied one, they swapped it out for a full one. As soon as we finished a dish, they removed the empty dish from the table. The restaurant is really small, so the servers had an easy view of all the tables. It was almost comical how efficient they were, lol. This place is popular. They seem to have a lot of regulars. Decor is casual. We had a great meal and would return. Review #72 (2025)
