tan tan soup with noodles, lemon tea, deep fried fish cutlet
    Olivia C.

Classic spot for noodle soup combo, my go to is always the tan tan soup, it's delicious if you like peanuts. Service is what you would expect in a Chinese restaurant, they get the job done.

Cooler days call for noodle soup. I've also heard the same for hot days. *Shrugs* I'm a big fan of their noodle combos. Your choice of soup base, toppings, noodles, and drink! There are some additional charges depending on your selection, but overall it's a fantastic value. In addition, you are also able to choose from a selection of sides. I always go for the desert wings. It seems they've increased the price of these side dishes, but it's so hard for me not to order them wings. Service and portions are consistent between their multiple locations, as well as takeout/delivery. So... Is it a cold or hot day? Either way, it calls for noodle soup!

Laksa, knife shaven noods w/signature pork sausage, cheesy sticky rice fish balls. @DeerGarden (Fraser) insta-cure for rainage

Perfect comfort food stop to get out of torrential rain today. So lucky to find a place like Deer Garden, you get to build your own noodle soup bowl. I opted for the knife-shaven noodles in Malay Laksa soup with their signature pork sausage and fish ball w/cheese and sticky rice. The laksa flavors are so good and I'd get this every time- noodles were awesome and worth the extra 2.50, but I'll skip the fish ball and try something else next time. Also I'd skip the wings, wasn't too standout but they have many other tasty sides to try out. Comfy booths and nice service, I liked how the drinks come in like a sealed bb tea cup.

    Spicy Szechuan soup

You can never go wrong with a nice big bowl of noodle soup, especially one that you build yourself! Deer Garden has been a staple in my family for the last few years. So much that we eat here once a week minimum! For $13.50 you can pick your soup base, noodles, and toppings. Your bowl of soup comes with bean curd, Napa cabbage, mushrooms and cilantro, you can also choose to opt out from these toppings. You can also add more toppings, small side snack plates, and a drink for an up charge. My go to is always the Szechuan Spicy Soup with sliced beef (which is ALWAYS tender), bok choy, and udon noodles. The spice level on this soup seems to vary every week. The service here is usually always great and it always seems like we never have to wait too long for our food.

I love this place! For $11.25, you can build your own noodle soup by choosing the soup base, noodles, and two free toppings. The price even includes a hot/cold coffee or tea drink! I came on a Monday night around 9 pm and it wasn't too crowded. My friend and I got seated immediately. I like how easy it is to order with the paper menu you're given as you can quickly mark off how you want your noodle soup to be customized. There's a great selection of spicy and non-spicy options for the soup base (though I'm not sure any of them are vegetarian), and as a pretty picky eater, I really appreciated the "no green onion & cilantro" options :) I went with the original fish soup, rice noodles (they were out of the flat rice noodles unfortunately), and fish tofu and fish filet for my toppings. The noodle soup already comes with veggies in the form of cabbage, bean curd skin, and mushrooms. After placing my order, I didn't have to wait long before I got my big bowl of piping hot noodle soup. The fish broth was delicious, with a good fish flavor. They are very generous with their toppings and I had quite a bit of fish filet, fish tofu, and veggies to work through. It's a big bowl too, and I definitely struggled to finish it as I wasn't super hungry to begin with. I thought this whole meal was a great value, as you can get both a delicious and hearty bowl of noodle soup and a drink for $11.25. I would come back again in a heartbeat if I'm ever in Vancouver again!

Beef brisket, fish balls, and instant noodles in laksa broth
    Shila A.

My partner and I came here for dinner on a really cold night. After reading some Yelp reviews, we decided to stick with the laksa broth - I opted for the beef brisket & fish balls toppings, and my partner got fish. The laksa broth had a delicious, deep, spicy flavour. It was the perfect option for the cold weather that night! My only complaint is the tea that came with the dish. I usually live HK style milk tea, but this one was too strong & unfortunately it was lukewarm. Nothing worse than a lukewarm HK milk tea :(

Minced Pork Cake and Preserved Mustard Leaves on Rice, and hot HK-style Milk Tea ($8.95)
    Michelle W.

Everyone always comes to Deer Garden and raves about the soup noodles. Don't get me wrong - I'm a fan too, but I simply cannot get enough of their Minced Pork Cake and Preserved Mustard Leaves on Rice. You must try it! The minced pork cake is so succulent (the perfect ratio of fat to meat!), and is only enhanced by the flavour and texture of the preserved mustard leaves. There is also gai lan on top to give some crunch (and health) to the whole dish. You're given a sauce to pour on top, and I highly recommend doing so along with the chili oil for a wonderful blend of umami and spice. Once upon a time, you could ask for the chili oil if you simply got a steamed rice combo, but now it only comes with the soup noodle combos upon request. If you're debating on a drink, might I suggest the classic HK-style milk tea? It's good hot or cold, but I do think the latter is better. Deer Garden's milk tea is unparalleled - I love it so much! Of course, as with any Chinese restaurant, it does cost extra ($1) to have a cold drink. Even though you have to pay another $1 to upgrade the size, the regular size is still enough to satiate your thirst and balance out the meal. As far as service goes, Deer Garden's really isn't the best. The waiting room can get quite busy and oftentimes, you will have to wait for the "hostess" to come and take down names based on the honesty policy. The bill will typically come before you ask for it and even when they're not that busy. On this occasion, the group next to us was also asked to leave because they were still chatting after paying, and there was a long lineup outside. Finally, having been a loyal customer of Deer Garden over the years, I've noticed that their prices have changed quite drastically. (E.g. Their DIY soup noodles were once around $8.95 and now they're $11.95.) That hasn't stopped the crowds from coming though because it is still relatively affordable and the taste is amazing!

$11.95 Combo: watercress & almond fish broth + Korean sweet potato glass noodles + beef brisket + liver
    Jess Y.

For a foodie, strangely enough this is my go-to comfort food place. It's not fancy by any means & cash-only to boot with long lineups, but it's seriously worth the wait. I always get their signature noodle soup combo cuz you really can't beat $11.95 for a delicious bowl of customized noodles that easily feeds 2, a drink & 11 types of discounted sides ranging from seared ox-tongue to whole fried cutlets/fillets for +$3.25! Tip: they also have complimentary dishes of house made XO sauce. Just ask! My favourite soup base is their tomato with kabocha, though their watercress with almonds & the coriander with century egg are great as well. For those who don't like fish soup, I would definitely recommend their laksa if you could take a little heat. It's a pretty rich, so you might want to go easy on the beef brisket or the other fattier cuts of meat. Their hot milk tea is damn authentic & I love it, but you could pretty much swap that out for any drink they have on the menu by paying the difference for the cold/speciality drinks. Check out their red bean ice with vanilla ice cream for a true HK experience :) Their entire menu is available in actual English which definitely makes ordering a little easier lol

Do you like cheap Asian noodles? Then come here. I can't think of any reason why I wouldn't recommend this place to my friends who visit Vancouver. You can either order from their hot dish menu or fill out the order form for custom noodles. I've only ever had the soup noodles here, but their other dishes looked really good. The combo deal is $10 CAD with a choice of soup broth, 2 toppings, and choice of noodles. It comes with coffee/tea, but if you want a cold drink it will be $1 more (I recommend the Honey Lemon or the Lychee Ice). For $2 more, you can get any of their specialty drinks like milk tea and slushes. You get an option of appetizers with the combo for $3 CAD each, maximum of 2 per combo order. They range from anything to fish cutlet and chicken desert wings - there's a wide variety. I recommend the deep fried fish and desert wings - fish is crunchy and goes great with the tarter sauce. Desert wings have this great ginger flavor in addition to being crispy. For soup noodles, it's really up to your preference. I usually stick to the rice noodles (vermicelli, thick, flat) and prefer toppings like fish cake, beef brisket, and fish balls. The special pork sausage is more of a kelbasa. I DON'T recommend ordering vegetables as a topping since they automatically give you bean curd, green onion, cabbage, and mushroom (make sure you specify if you don't want these), unless of course you're vegetarian. - Watercress Almond Fish Soup: I recommend this if you're looking for a light broth. It's very light, so try to pair with thin rice noodles and some seafood toppings, though beef brisket works fine. - Tom Yum: It's really not spicy, but more sour. The spiciness gives it a mild kick, but the lemon grass cuts into it. It's actually REALLY good and great for when you have a sore throat/cold. I recommend seafood toppings and thick or flat rice noodles... the broth itself is very addicting. Fair warning, this place is VERY popular and has wait times during peak lunch. We came here at like 1 pm and still had to wait 20 minutes for a table. This location is also cash only, but there are banks in the area if you're strapped for cash. Don't expect the greatest service here - it's still a Chinese restaurant. However for the food, options, and price... I'm willing to endure it. Originally we were headed towards their Richmond locations, but there was so much traffic on the way that we found this location on the map (thanks T-Mobile for allowing international data roaming). Honestly it's just as good as the ones in Richmond I've been to, and I'm glad their expanding their presence around Vancouver.

Warning: ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** Deer Garden allows you to choose, based on an a la carte menu, the soup base, noodle type, and the toppings. You check off what you want on the menu. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** A la carte menus apparently confuse elderly Chinese people ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** There are numerous choices of soup bases, numerous choices of noodles and numerous choices of toppings. On top of that, they have a drink menu, and HK style food that is not noodle based as well as snacks, with certain time restrictions for certain items. This will add to the confusion for elderly Chinese parents. Information overload, I guess. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** The menu is in both Chinese and English. Apparently, written Chinese is tough to comprehend for elderly Chinese parents even if they are schooled in Chinese. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** I ended up explaining the whole thing to them. They still didn't quite get the idea. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** I end up ordering for them. In fact, I told them what to get based on my knowledge of their preferences. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** You get a drink included with the a la carte noodle dish. A choice of HK style coffee or tea. The drinks arrive first, but only one drink came. Elderly dad complains to Yelper, "Where are the other drinks? Why did they not bring the other ones?" Yelper reply, "Dad, you do know this is a Chinese establishment, so the timing of items coming out will be inconsistent?" Elderly Chinese parent, "Harmmmmmmmphhhhh!" He grumbles. The rest of the drinks came within a minute. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** The snacks of fried wings and pork chops come first. They were tasty. Wings were really crispy. 3 wings for $1.75. Sides cost $1.75 if you order a noodle dish. Elderly Chinese parents approve. The first round of noodles come and it just so happens that elderly Chinese dad didn't get his, since the bowls were too large to fit on the tray. So the waitress walks away. She happens to walk by a few seconds later and elderly Chinese dad complains to her, "I'm missing my bowl??" Yelper interjects, "It's coming dad, stop complaining." Elderly Chinese dad: "I'm not complaining. I'm afraid they forgot my noodles" Yelper: "Dad, when you're speaking to the waitress in less than one minute about a missing bowl of noodles, you're complaining." ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** Surely enough, the "missing/forgotten" noodles came within one minute. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** The noodles and soup were a hit all around. Good flavours and a large quantity of food. Nobody finished their food. All of it was packed to go. Elderly Chinese parents were happy because of bang for the buck. Average bill was $10 per person with left-overs. The place is modern and clean. Men's room is a bit tight, so if you have elderly Chinese parents, heed warning, "***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.***", else they may complain about a tight washroom. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** I would come here again. Elderly Chinese parents want to come again. I'm not coming with them. They'll have to fend for themselves. Good luck to them with that. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** I'm not the only one who went through this experience according to one of my buddies. Similar thing happened to him. ***Do not bring elderly Chinese parents here.*** You've been warned. If you do bring elderly Chinese parents here, you didn't read my review. Cash only.

Totally had no idea Deer Garden had a location here until now. Parking is available on the side streets, but there are also these nice giant city-owned lots half a block W of here. The interior is mostly dark wood, with (of course) plaster deer heads on the wall. Everything looks good except for the vinyl seats - this makes the place look dated. The soup noodles I had were very consistent with the Richmond location. Which means the quality is decent. It's pricier than some other locations at $8.50, but the portion size more than makes up for it. You will leave satisfied. One other interesting bit - some of the tables have a hidden side drawer for utensils. Very ingenious. Oh, and they like serving hot drinks inside stainless steel mugs. A little unusual, but hey, they're shiny.

This is a total Cattle Cafe copycat. There are a few things that were done better though: -Service bell at your table to ring for staff to come to your table -Check off sheet to order what you want in your noodle combo -Slightly friendlier service -They have the flat rice noodle option Other than that, the prices are identical and so are the flavors. The bowl of noodles seemed a smidgen smaller at Deer Garden, but I was full anyway. Overall, I prefer Deer Garden.

A Gastronomic Awakening in Chinatown! You don't truly know…read moreuntil you go--and now that I've been, I'm haunted. As I write this, I am literally still dreaming of the Hong Kong Style BBQ Pork. It didn't just "eat" well; it dissolved into a decadent, sweet, fatty puddle of pure bliss. Walking in, the vibe is quintessential Chinatown: a bustling counter, a glass case showcasing glistening roasted treasures, and a seating area that trades fancy decor for pure, functional authenticity. We were clearly out of our element, probably looking like deer in headlights, but the staff met our confusion with warm smiles. Then came Bobby--the absolute heart and soul of this place. We walked in expecting the standard American-Chinese routine, but Bobby whisked us away to a cozy table and treated us like family. He started us off with a fragrant jasmine tea so naturally sweet and floral it didn't need a grain of sugar--perfect for a biting winter night. While we flirted with the Happy Hour menu, Bobby took the reins. You don't say no to a man with that much charisma and passion! On his expert recommendation, we pivoted to the Two-Meat Combo (BBQ Pork + Soy Chicken) with a side of their famous Roast Duck. The food arrived in a lightning-fast 10 minutes, but the real treat was Bobby's play-by-play on how each dish was prepared. You can taste the pride in every bite. The balance was masterclass: a symphony of sweet, salty, and umami. The meats were succulent, the skins were shattery-crisp, and the glazes were perfectly sticky. The undisputed heavyweight champion, however, was that Hong Kong BBQ Pork. Imagine the best "burnt ends" of your life, drenched in a caramelized, mouth-watering sauce that demands your full attention. We left Chinatown BBQ feeling more than just sated--we felt enlightened. If you're looking for a "one in a million" meal, let Bobby order for you. You won't regret it.

As a high end restaurant, the food quality was below average. However, what truly disappointed me was the poor service. Even though the restaurant was not busy, the dishes were served very slowly. The first 2 dishes came out fast, but the later 2 dishes came out after 45 min. When we asked for additional rice and water, we had to wait an unusually long time. Throughout the meal, we felt neglected. It was hard not to feel that the level of service was noticeably indifferent, possibly because we did not order any high-priced seafood or premium dishes. For a restaurant at this price point, the service was simply unacceptable. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. I would not return and would not recommend it.

Came here for a Chinese wedding reception and the whole place was reserved for us…read more The food was a set menu and everything on it was yummy and well prepared. I like the way they portioned it and served each of us. They did not skimp out on the ingredients, such as if they say whole abalone, it really is. They definitely served the best seafood. The dessert also was amazing with the brown sugar cake and tapioca pudding. The only reason 1 star was missing was that parking was not that easy and service was mostly good. At times, some staff were not was attentive such as: they took the chopsticks away, but you still needed them. Still, Kirin is solid for it's dim sum and seafood!
