Reid Holm who owns Decker Electrician was recommended by Tri-Supply. We have a mirrored electrical socket within our mirror. Now that we're getting new mirrors we will need to move an electrical socket. Reid evaluated the socket and communicated that it was an easy move which could be done pretty quickly. We have been using Decker Electric pretty much since Reid started the business in the late 1990s. He's the best! Explains everything he does and has solved several electrical problems that were confusing and even dangerous (like tree rats chewing through dining room chandelier wiring in our attic). $5000 to upgrade home service and replace my panel. Exorbitant prices slow, arrogant, unresponsive, misleading... The problems started when I made a request a couple of weeks before our Austin energy appointment for upgrading the home's service and new panel installation. I requested installation of an outlet and manual transfer switch for my panel so that I could connect my portable generator directly to it if the power goes out again. This is when the days and days of excuses started... #1 you can't do that, it would "cost thousands of dollars more - over $10,000" and require a new permit #2 "I'll install a plug directly on your furnace in the attic instead and if the power goes out, you can run an extension cord from the attic to the backyard and plug into the generator" [!!!!!!!] #3 The power is never going to go out like that again. (that was a favorite, along with "solar panels and Tesla batteries will take another 20 years to be good enough to use") #4 (after texting him a picture of my friend's panel that was done under permit by a licensed electrician). "Here is what I want, Reid". He replied "I will not put in some [illegal/not to code/other illogical nonsensical excuse]. "but Reid, they show this EXACT SOLUTION on This Old House" to which he replied "They do a lot of things on that show that I don't agree with". #5 The day of the panel installation he provided a brochure for an OTT system for a very expensive automatic power switchover device for the panel, which was completely unnecessary and far more complicated than the simple solution I asked for]. "here is a solution for you" #6 [After completing the panel work but before the inspector signed off and AFTER I paid him 90% of what I owned him], he watches the video from This Old House that shows how to do EXACTLY what I asked for from the very beginning- "a way to plug a portable generator directly to the panel when there is a power outage", he said, "oh yeah, I installed one of those for my mother 15 years ago". F.U., Reid. Then the price increases... He advised me via text on the morning of the panel installation that prices of supplies had gone up and it would cost an additional 300-400 over estimate. At the end of the day, he presented me with a bill that was actually $800 over budget! I paid him the balance less $500 because there was no confirmation that the permit was closed. Turns out that the inspector said he 1. didn't know that new panels required surge protectors (even I could have told you that, Reid) 2. the panel wasn't labeled. Interestingly, I had a long chat with the COA Inspector and he told me that not only was the generator plug I had requested completely to code, he thought it was a great idea! He even asked me to send him the video from This Old House. Why did I stick with this loser for 4 months? Because he filed the permit in September and held me hostage until the January appointment when Austin Energy could cut off the power. At the end of the day, the work was done and it passed inspection and my power has been working over the past few weeks. I found out that the final invoice was almost double what it should have been. Why did he become such a weirdo? I don't know but beware. Those who found him "honest and fair" is what I also thought in the beginning. Until I didn't. with cause. Bottom line - don't trust him or his estimates or that he will do what you ask for. read more

Sadly, I tried to get a quote from Decker, but never could get someone to come out. I called and left a message and also emailed, using the contact us section of their website. I received an email response asking me when I was available, I replied and never heard back. Its disappointing as a potential customer to be completely blown off. Maybe Reid does amazing work. Unfortunately, I'll never know. In closing, I pose a question: if I can't trust a company to return my phone calls or emails, can I trust them to do quality work on my home? Probably not. read more

I had Decker complete two jobs in my home. And while I trust the work that they do, I believe they are slower than average, which is a problem when you're paying by the hour. Jobs that were quoted at 1/2 - 1 full day typically took more like 2 days. Also, this is not the electrician to call if you want a nice finished look for your plugmolds and outlets. They are just nice guys with no sense of aesthetics. read more

I really appreciated their honest explanation about the work related to the items I was requesting and in the end trusted their judgement to get the best results for what I needed at the time. I contacted Reid and company while I was in the discovery phase of purchasing a home. It needed quite a bit of work, and Decker Electric helped me identify all the critical items, as well as improvements that I could come back and do later if I wanted to watch my budget. When it was time to do the work, a bigger team showed up than I had expected, and spent a lot of time making sure things were done right. They actually did more than I had expected from the original quote. Very profesional and thorough, plus I feel better educated about codes and safety. I called Decker Electric about a rental property of mine after searching for electricians on Angies List. My tenant said the power had gone off and one of the breakers in the box was buzzing and/or sparking. Reid Holm was responsive when I called, and quickly went to the house to check on it, the same day in fact. He told me that the entire service needed to be replaced. It's an older house and so that didn't seem too far-fetched to me. I asked him how much it would cost, and he told me $1,200. Interestingly, I had gotten an email from Angies List the day before with a deal for 200-amp service replacement for $1,343.00 from Efficient Air Conditioning. So, $1,200 being less than $1,343, I thought that what he was quoting me was a fair price and told him to go ahead and do it. He took care of scheduling it with the city and replaced it as promised on the scheduled day. This is where the problem started. He called me and said it was finished, and I gave him my credit card number to pay for it. Later that day I got an email receipt for the invoice for $2,300, almost double the $1,200 he had quoted me. I contacted him and he said he never told me it would be $1,200, he said he had told me it would be around $2,000. I, of course, think this is ridiculous. When I first found him on Angies list I printed out the info page, and when he told me $1,200, I had written it down on the paper, and also told my wife this was going to cost us $1,200. It makes no sense that I would agree to a $2,000 job when I had just gotten a coupon for $1,343. Of course he disagrees, and swears that he never said $1,200. I have no real recourse, because if I stop the credit card payment he will just put a mechanics lien on the property. I have to take a good bit of the blame since I was dumb enough to actually trust a contractor, and never asked for a proposal in writing. As I wrote above, he was responsive and punctual, and at least as competent as any electrician should be. But I feel like he took advantage when I didn't ask for a written bid and just went ahead and did the work and overcharged me, knowing that I wouldn't have any choice but to pay him. So, if you want to give him a try, I HIGHLY recommend you make sure you get a bid in writing first, and make sure that when you are paying him the invoice matches the bid. read more

Reid gave me a written estimate that was reasonable and better than the other estimate I'd received, including giving me some assessments on what work actually needed to be done (that is, he talked himself out of some money). He came out, did the work, and cleaned up very well after it was complete. He was very personable and easy to talk to. I tasked them with installing additional kitchen, and bathroom lighting in a top-floor condo unit. They misplaced the holes in the ceiling for reset lighting , which can still be seen (they never properly patched, or outsourced a drywall professional to repair their measurement mistake.) Worse yet, they cost me hundreds of dollars as they ran all new electric through my HVAC return vent system, creating massive holes in the duct box to the attic, permanently leaking air into the attic space above. So basically, my closed HVAC system is now open to the attic and my electricity bills are 200+ per month in the summer months, as I'm trying to perpetually cool fresh hot attic air through the holes they put in my HVAC return system. It took me a long time to figure out the cause of the holes, it was the electrician. The only electrician I hired to install new lights in my bathroom and kitchen was Decker Electric. read more

I hired him last week to install 3 sensor lights and originally he quoted me approximately $150/light. Well the job went smoothly, "even better than expected", yet he billed me for $746. Over the last year or so Decker has performed two smallish residential jobs for me, the most recent being a couple weeks ago. Both times the electricians who came to the house were professional, competent, efficient, willing to work around the quirks of an old house, and they cleaned up after themselves. Regarding the most recent interaction, the Owner called me about a week following the job - just checking in and making sure everything was ok. I think this is the first time I've received such a follow-up call from any contractor I've ever dealt with and it was a nice touch to have such consideration even on a small job. I've been in my old house over 5 years and got in touch with Decker early on based on a friend's recommendation. I have had them out for projects several times over several years. They are sterling and I can't imagine calling on anyone else. I've had exterior and interior lights and ceiling fans installed in places that never had a fixture, as well as replacing existing fixtures. Whether he does the work himself or not, the owner, Reid has been on site for every job. His staff has been the same two young men on each job, but one, and that kind of continuity is a very good sign. They also clean up after themselves.
