The ride was fine and everybody enjoyed themselves, but the staff didn't seem well prepared. Perhaps we caught them on a bad day (we called less then 24 hours in advance, but they accomodated us on a Sunday morning anyway). But there were several things that just didn't seem right.
There were no helmets for the kids (or adults, for that matter). We should have asked on the phone, but we just assumed that any horse rental place would insist on the kids wearing helmets and provide some. I was particularly worried later on when the horses broke into a trot on their own, but the kids stayed calm and rode just fine.
There were practically no pre-ride instructions on safety or technique. They didn't check saddle adjustments on the adults before we left.
The buddy saddle for our 4-year-old wouldn't stay in place and I spent the entire ride adjusting it. The guide made 3 or 4 attempts to fix it, but it never stayed in place, and I had to constantly pull him and the saddle back into place.
One of our guides was riding a horse that was limping, so she spent much of the ride walking alongside her horse.
The route wasn't particularly exciting -- following a gravel road into a preserve area. No backcountry riding.
They're nice folks in a beautiful part of the world, but they need to put a little more thought and effort into their operation. read more
