We had an absolutely amazing horseback riding experience in the beautiful Colorado mountains near Montrose! The scenery is breathtaking, with incredible mountain views everywhere you look. If you're looking for a place to ride, Montrose is one of the most beautiful places you could choose. Our guide, Justin, was fantastic! We've been riding with him every year during our annual trip for the past six years, and he always makes the experience fun, safe, and memorable. He's knowledgeable, friendly, and truly cares about both the riders and the horses. The horses are gentle, well-trained, and a pleasure to ride. My mom is a beginner, and her horse was calm and patient, making her feel comfortable the entire ride. My 8-year-old also had the sweetest, gentlest horse, which made the experience so special and stress-free for her. What an amazing experience! Nestled in the hills above Ouray, surrounded by some of the most beautiful country in Colorado is Action Adventures. All of the guides are extremely knowledgeable about horses and it is evident that they love what they do. To top it off, they are all very down to earth kind people who will do their best to make sure your experience is an enjoyable one. Within 10 minutes of arriving, I was on top of a beautiful white horse named Alexa preparing to head out on our ride. All of the animals are extremely well trained and mild tempered, Alexa responded to all of my commands quickly and confidently. Brittany, our guide, asked us what we wanted to see on horseback and adjusted the route for our 2 hour trip to see a waterfall and to ride through a steeper part of trail called "The adventure loop" which was awesome! I learned an important life principle: If you're trying to decide between the 2 hour ride and the 4 hour ride, take the 4 hour ride. It was a workout, but we were very glad that we took the 4 hour ride. The guides were very capable, conversational, and helpful, the horses were strong, surefooted, and patient, and we enjoyed superb views of the mountains and valleys. You go along an old road through the forest, then up through varied forest -scrub oak, aspen, and pine. We even had the enthusiastic and friendly ranch dog bounding along with us. My wife is petite and I'm at least 200 lbs with my gear, but they had horses that worked well for each of us. I'd recommend that adults and older kids take at least the 2 hour ride for the beautiful views. Wonderful time with family! There was 6 of us and it was a private trip. Much better than any group trip I have taken with strangers and there was always that "one person" who didn't follow the rules and ruined the experience. Having a private group made it so much more relaxing and carefree. Beautiful scenery, confident horses, and friendly staff! We choose the horse trail over jeep adventure in order to be closer to nature, a more quieter and personal ride, as well as more relaxing ride. We had 2 first timers in our group and they did great and enjoyed the experience. Staff was very courteous checking on us and great with kiddos and encouragement! We had a lovely time on the trails today, even though our route had to be cut short due to the weather/ unsafe trails (which was let known in advance, and refunded the difference!). Our guide Lea was very knowledgeable and kept us laughing and in awe the entire time. There was so much history in the area that she told us about! The views were spectacular and unlike anything else. Bug spray was provided! Even if you're a first time rider, or very advanced, this is perfect for you. The horses were very gentle and listened to both the leader and your commands. They knew the trails well (shout out to our horses Boon and Banner!). This is probably the best horseback riding outfit I've ever been to. I almost always go horseback riding when I travel and this is my very new favorite. The horses are in excellent health and receive quality care. The guides are very accommodating and personable. They make the ride fun! The trails begin halfway up the mountain and there isn't one square inch of mine Dane landscape. You'll go through Oakbrush, Pinetree's, creeks, aspen canopies and switchbacks. My son and I had a great experience on our 2 hour trail ride. It was only my second time riding, but the length of the ride was just enough to feel like I knee what I was doing. Our guide was a wonderful conversationalist, chatting as we trotted while also providing tips for handling the horses on certain terrain and adapting our riding to the horses' individual personalities. Mine had a stubborn streak. :) He also pointed out a few pieces of mining equipment left on the mountain that I would have missed otherwise. The best part for me was the beauty of riding a beautiful animal through a beautiful mountain trail. It felt other-worldly in a great way. I'll definitely be back. read more

This is an awesome family made business. They are diligent in attending to the need of there customers, offering jackets and waters bottles on the trails. The horses are healthy and rotated very often so they are not over worked. The owner, her family, and crew make sure they are well trained personally and they were awesome. The 1-hour ride itself was beautiful, and the trail guide, Eric, was awesome. He conversed and made sure everyone was doing alright. He is very knowledgeable and you can tell he loves what he is doing. We were a group of five, 60 something girls, most having little or no horseback riding experience. Catherine and Christine gave an excellent horsemanship 101 course, matched us with compatible horses complete with cupholders and got us all mounted and on our way. The trail was challenging but they coached us all the way to the top to a magnificent view and then took photos of all of us. Communication with the guides was encouraged and they kept an eye on us all the time to ensure our safety. History of the area was included. We loved the adventure and followed their advice of 2 Advil, 2 Margaritas and Hot Springs soak! read more

My partner and I had never ridden horses before but heard that Action Adventures accommodates to beginners and could not have loved our experience more! We requested a ride with just the two of us and they were happy to oblige. Our wonderful tour guide, Peyton, was a delight! He was very patient, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. We went on a 2 hour ride yesterday with Rosie, our wrangler, who was spectacular. Our group consisted of my two daughters, 8 & 9 and myself. We had some incredibly kind and responsive horses in Sarge, Rooster and Frankie. Rosie led us along a trail that passed a pond, the girls got to offer the horses some water. Then up to a wild flower meadow where we were able to canter if we wanted. Rosie was very sweet with the girls and gave some great instructions! Paul was also super helpful in getting us on the trail and reviewing instructions with my girls. Overall a great experience and I LOVE their horses! read more

This experience was amazing! Our small group signed up for a 1.5 hour trail ride and our guide MaKayla was fantastic! I had never gone horseback riding before, and but all of the staff made me feel plenty comfortable before getting on the horse and going on the ride! I even had a slight hiccup with my horse (lost the reins, 100% my fault not Slevin's), but MaKayla handled it like a pro and made sure I was safe the whole time! This was the perfect adventure for my wife and I! We only did the 1 hour because we haven't rode horses in many years, but if I were to do it again I would definitely do the 2 hour ride for sure. Our guide, which if I remember correctly his name was Cole. He was the youngest of the guides, but he was very informative about everything we asked, such as questions about the horses or the area of Colorado. He was always bringing up good conversations so it wasn't a boring quiet ride. Action Adventure needs to give this boy a raise and some paid vacation! read more

This place was great! Everyone was very friendly and kind and the guide was patient and kind, taking pictures of each party of people in a spot with SPECTACULAR views! The scenery was breathtaking and the horses were energetic and gentle. It looked like they take great care of their animals (including the dog that accompanied us on the trail!) which is very important to me. The trails, the horses, the guides, the equipment: all were excellent! Justin rode in front and guided us along. Christine was following up in the rear making sure we were all okay. The horses were calm and energetic going up the mountain. These horses are very well cared-for. That is an important aspect of riding for me. The trail was beautiful and views along the way couldn't have been more inspiring. I plan on going with them again this summer, and maybe even doing an over-night trip. My 20 year old son has been dying to try horseback riding so on a stop through Telluride on a cross country road trio we stumbled upon Action Adventures, and are so happy we did! It was so easy to book, and the actual riding experience was 10/10. We are both novices and not only were our horses so lovely but Cade our guide was PHENONENAL! We were in Telluride to celebrate my 60th birthday and Father's Day. We decided this would be a fun activity for all of us. This was my daughter's first time ever riding a horse, and it could not have been a better experience. The owner made sure my little girl knew how to direct her horse and get comfortable in the saddle before we went out on the trail. The horses were clearly very well trained and happy. My husband and I completed the 2 hour tour on Saturday and absolutely loved it. It was just us and our guide, and she was wonderful. I had only ridden once and was a bit nervous, but she chatted easily with me about our vacation and I got so interested in talking to her I forgot I was nervous. The views are incredible, and the ride was full of history and beautiful views.
