I had high expectations for this place given the reviews but left fairly disappointed- it started when I walked in and the place had a weird smell. I couldn't place it but it was not appetizing. The food was pretty mediocre- Shrimp Taco (too salty), chicken taco (best one but still just so so ) and crispy beef taco (greasy but flavorless). Also they put a bunch of cream on the tacos instead of onion and cilantro which just didn't fit. Chips and salsa were also mediocre compared to some of the other Mexican restaurants in the area. We visited De Oro Mexican Grill on Rangeline for the first time. This is the location that used to be Cancun Mexican restaurant. The menu is more "new age"Mexican rather than traditional Mexican. If you want traditional, Mexican, you will be disappointed. Although they have items on the menu that they say are traditional, even those have a bit of a new age spin to them. We ordered a large queso dip for nine dollars. They served it as two small orders of queso. It was white queso and we thought it was very good. For dinner, we ordered the King Tostada. You can get it with steak for $19, blackened chicken for $17, blackened salmon for $18, and shrimp for $20. We ordered the blackened chicken. It comes with chips, refried beans, chili sauce, melted cheese, Romain, lettuce, pico de gallo, queso, fresco, and sour cream. The lettuce is tossed in a lime vinaigrette. We did like this dish. The menu, we thought, was a bit difficult to read. In fact, we had a difficult time finding the fajitas listed on the menu. Since many of the dishes had a new age spin, we had a hard time, deciding what to order. In fact, the King Tostada that we ordered had radishes on it, even though it was not listed as an ingredient on the menu. To drink we ordered the house margarita. A 27 ounce margarita is $15.50. A 12 ounce margarita is $9.99. The atmosphere looks like a normal Mexican restaurant. In fact, it does not appear that any renovations were made to the interior from when the location was called Cancun. The service was good. Our waitress was very friendly. If you like, non-traditional, Mexican. You may like this place. However, we like, and expected, more of a traditional Mexican menu. We prefer that type of Mexican food. As a result, this is a location that we probably will not visit often. However, feel free to give it a try because you may like the different twist on Mexican food items. This is the greatest Mexican restaurant of all time, and I've been to many Mexican restaurants and this place has the best tacos I have ever had. The queso dip is also amazing and the salsa, I recommend this for anyone is Carmel, there's beautiful lights inside and outside that make u feel in the mood, and the waitresses and waiters make u feel like family. read more

A unique and slightly upscale from the traditional Mexican restaurant. If you are expecting the traditional Mexican-American style place, you may be dissatisfied pointed. They have fewer but better curated meals. They are more pleasing to look at and the food was good. I must say, the queso Condit was awesome. I could have stopped there. My shrimp enchiladas was ok (shrimp was a bit over cooked) but otherwise good. My wife liked her combo as well. Drinks are good. Y'all. We've had some insanely good food over our lifetime eating at some of the top restaurants in the world. This food at De Oro is exceptional. The presentation was excellent, the flavors were wonderful, the restaurant was spotlessly clean and they have TONS of seating. There are TV's everywhere making it fantastic for sports nights, and the service was prompt and helpful. I would wager to say that this is now one of the hidden gems of Carmel. This is the building on Rangeline that used to be the Cancun Mexican restaurant. We hadn't been here in a while, so I'm not sure if they made many changes, but it seemed mostly similar to what we recalled from before. They promptly seated my wife and I in an elevated area to the right of the entry by ourselves that was separated for the larger family tables that seemed to populate the majority of the space. It was nice to be separated from the noise from elsewhere, although it was a tad chilly each time folks opened the doors when entering or leaving the restaurant. They promptly brought us chips with 3 small bowls for dipping as well as took our orders. My wife intended to order the margarita special for $10 that she saw on the specials sign when we entered. She also ordered a chile relleno ($16), which came with rice, beans, and tortillas. I was intrigued by their taco offerings and chose 4 different ones [blackened calamari ($6), blackened salmon ($6), portobello ($5), and potato ($4)] to get a sampling of what they had. Our food arrived somewhat promptly, in fact before her margarita. When we mentioned this to the gentleman who brought our food, he said he would check. They soon brought out a HUGE fish bowl sized glass, which was not what she expected. She said the chile relleno was pretty good, but the rice was dry, which she countered by adding some of the salsa for the chips to it. My tacos were decently sized and full of ingredients. They didn't skimp on the calamari nor the salmon, but the portobello was minimal compared to the onions and peppers and the potato was difficult to distinguish from the lettuce and crema. To be honest, I probably prefer the taco flavors and value at Torchy's in Fishers, but I was impressed by the calamari taco. The primary reason for my 3 star rating beyond a couple of misses on my tacos and the chilly breeze intervals was that when we got the bill, I was caught off guard by the $22.50 that my wife's margarita cost. We could have brought it up to someone, but we realized it was probably the appropriate charge based on the size she received. It simply wasn't the one she ordered. Not sure if it was a language barrier or why the mistake occurred, but we just paid it anyway. Wouldn't be opposed to returning, but won't go out of our way to do so. read more

Steak was very hard to chew, plus they don't serve sour cream with it, everywhere you go it's always come with sour cream, and a plate that comes with rice and beans are very small. Estrella de Oro is definitely one of my favorite new restaurants in Carmel. Estrella de Oro stands for "gold star" in Spanish, which is true to every aspect of the restaurant. The inside has a fresh new look. Their staff is very welcoming and professional. The food is second to none! It's obvious in each bite that they're using fresh ingredients in their dishes. Grabbed lunch here with one of my girlfriends and ended up chatting away for 3-4 hours. Their servers were super attentive of all our needs and even offered us a free dessert. I had patronized the Cancun restaurant occasionally over the years. I always liked that, so I was a little hesitant when reading reviews that talked about the new ownership moving to a "new age" menu. But I decided to stop there for lunch today. Yes, the menu is different, and a bit more expensive than the "Cancun level". I ordered the portobello quesadilla. That's a little upscale for me, but I must say it was really delicious and plenty large. The reality is that the area around this restaurant is gentrifying, so it is probably smart of the new owners to do this upgrade. I still like the simpler Mexican dishes, but I will definitely visit De Oro from time to time. And the waiter said if I really wanted something simple like Arroz con Pollo, they would whip that up for me, even though it is not on the menu. :) read more

My family and I were aimlessly driving around Carmel looking for a place for dinner and came across what we used to know as a restaurant called Cancun. We were extremely pleased with the service, food, and environment. The chef is absolutely amazing, my dad (who eats steak everyday) ordered the ribeye and a side of shrimp and said it was his favorite steak and shrimp he has ever had. My mom and I ordered the steak tacos and they were superb, the guac is also to die for. The food/menu is very authentic and chef Manny is a top tier chef and artist. This place was fantastic! I'm always on the hunt for an authentic Mexican place being from New Mexico (Indiana typically lacks in the flavor department) so this was a wonderful find. We were told the chef was from California and I could not have been happier with the menu. Queso and guac are perfect, I got the Chile Relleno (which was done the right way) with an excellent batter and phenomenal flavor. My wife had the bowl, which was fresh and wonderfully prepared (the skirt steak was so tender, with little to no tendon that makes skirt steak chewy at other places). The service was stellar, very attentive staff and great drinks. Comfortable seating and nice decor. We've been back twice and had great experiences every time. Wow - the new menu at De Oro is delicious! The 5 of us truly enjoyed our meals, from the Esquites appetizer, to the Morenita Quesadillas and portobello tacos to the fantastic churros for dessert. A more authentic Mexican taste to all of the dishes - just wonderful. The Tequila Sours were well-made, balanced and citrusy. The Friday night DJ was a fun add. Strongly recommend!!! read more

Had lunch on Friday based on review I saw on Instagram. The service was great I had the Carnitas Michoacán and my spouse ordered the Combo #2 with a cheese enchilada and a steak taco.
