Meh. You come here because it has a nice patio that's great for people watching. The food is always serviceable but never amazing. I was honestly very surprised by the amount of inedible beef fat in my birria tacos. But the patio is dog friendly and my pup was more than happy to wolf down the fatty parts for me. Service was incredibly slow and they don't seem to have sections for the patio. We waited and waited as we saw tables all around us being served, including two different tables that were seated well after we were. We finally had to go inside and ask for a server. I might give it one more try, but with all the other options in Carmel, eh, it's unlikely. read more

We came on a Saturday night for dinner and they were busy! We got seated right away. This was my first time here and I had a gift certificate, so that's why we came to this location. We started with the dip appetizer which was queso, bean dip, and guacamole. All of it was lacking flavor and the queso was not hot. The "bean dip" was just refried beans with queso in it. Very underwhelming. We got the fajitas for two to split and it was a lot of food! Since it was for two people, we each got our own plate of refried beans, rice, lettuce, sour cream, pico, and guac. The location of Agave is a prime spot right on Main Street, so I get the convenience and draw to swing in. There's lots of parking behind the buildings and in garages and the staff are quick and super attentive too, but the food and drinks are average. I had two margarita and didn't taste any alcohol in either of them. Like none. It's solely the flavoring. The food is standard casual Mexican. Unless I'm sitting outside on the patio in the summer, I'd pass on this place. read more

On a perfect 77 degree Saturday afternoon, what do you want? A perfect pitcher of margaritas under an umbrella. Where do you go? Agave. We went at 2:30 for exclusive service street side. Our server was friendly and had good stories (but not too many). It doesn't get much better. Oh wait it does. We enjoyed the classic house margarita. Kick it up with Patron, but seriously, that isn't necessary. See the pictures for dinner. On beautiful days they open the "wall" and let the outside in. I've reviewed nearly every restaurant in downtown Carmel and on the Monon in the past decade. I'm now going back through and reducing stars on all of those same restaurants where the service has taken a nosedive. The ambiance and food are still great here at Agave, but they have apparently started rationing chips & salsa, and even ice water is evidently no longer in abundance. Interesting how everything at this restaurant has gotten smaller except for the bill. Thanks for hosing-up what used to be one of my favorite places to eat. read more

We visited on a Saturday in mid-May, excited to sit on the patio and enjoy the nice weather. When we arrived, there were no employees in sight. After waiting about 5-10 minutes, a waitress finally appeared and told us it was open seating. She quickly followed up with chips, salsa, and waters for everyone. As we reviewed the menu, we all gradually all commented that our waters tasted off--almost as if the glasses still had soap residue. We continued browsing the menu and slowly finished the entire basket of chips and salsa. Despite being pretty hungry, the waitress never returned to take our drink orders, even after 15-20 minutes. We decided to leave, leaving a $5 bill on the table in hopes it covered the chips and salsa, and went elsewhere. I've always had positive experiences at the Fishers location, so I was surprised by the lack of service here. Agave Bar and Grill is a definite stop in Carmel for Mexican food. The margaritas are huge and with an expansive choice of drinks you will surely find the right margarita for you. There are a few tables available for outdoor seating and the ambiance on the inside is done well. This is a Mexican restaurant that has that comfortable feeling where you might have a margarita or two or three or floor. The parking is always a situation in Carmel but the lot in back provides a close walk. There are some signs though that warn to not park in this or that parking space. I would definitely come back to Agave Bar and Grill even if it were just for drinks. The food itself is just as you can imagine, an expansive food menu with the standard Mexican fare you would expect to find. Have a drink, stay awhile and enjoy! read more

Came in for Father's day at noon and picked one of the several tables with umbrellas they have out front on the side walk. It was supposed to be warm that day, but it was nice sitting in the shade with a little air movement not far from the street. Service seemed a tad sluggish at the start, but in their defense it also appeared there were only 2 of them at that time. The did promptly bring chips and salsa to the table. They did a decent job of refilling our waters as well as our chips and salsa without our needing to ask. We also were grateful that they were open as we noticed multiple folks attempting to enter the dining options across the street that were apparently closed for the day. The waitress asked to take our order after a bit, but we still hadn't received menus yet. Turns out that they have QR codes at tables to access their menu, but our table along with our neighboring ones seemed to no longer have the codes adhered. She then brought out a paper menu to use, which listed their lunch and dinner menus, although the lunch menu was only available for weekdays. They also have a brunch menu apparently, but that was not listed on the paper menu, so a tad annoying. Wife ordered the Huevos Rancheros ($12) and was very pleased as they prepared it per her request (eggs over hard and with green sauce). Daughter chose Arroz con Pollo ($15) and was also pleased with the quantity of cheese provided. Son selected the Chicken and Waffles ($13) with spicy syrup, which he thought were good but that he should have asked for additional syrup as the container wasn't sufficient for the quantity of waffle that he had. I went with the Chili Relleno ($15), which was also very cheesy and tasty. The rice and beans that came with it were just OK, a tad dry and lacking a bit of seasoning. Overall, not a bad meal. Prices seemed a tad high for what we got, but that is the case everywhere with inflation these days. Service was fine in spite of most likely being undermanned, but again just grateful for those who did choose to come in and work on a Father's Day Sunday. read more

I'm not very picky and I was hungry so just ate it. Big mistake. GF got taco bowl w ground beef. Stay away from any ground beef dish. Her's came out extremely runny (literally looked like a soup) and mine was a little runny. Both dishes meat tasted gross, and definitely not fresh. No bueno. Rest of the table said their food was decent. Everyone else got steak or chicken dishes. Chips were warm, flaky and delicious. Salsa flavorful but nothing spectacular. First time here, kind of small but plenty of open tables. Only one server, but he was hustling and the food didn't take too long. I had the shrimp tacos- came with lots of avocado and were good, though I prefer the corn tortillas to flour. My wife, however, did not like her taco salad. I came here with some coworkers for a group lunch. We had called ahead the day before to make a reservation for the group of 10. When we arrived they had no idea of the reservation and were running around trying to accommodate us in an almost empty restaurant. With that, service was extremely slow and drink refills were hard to come by. This is a little bit more of an upscale Mexican restaurant. Service was pretty good! I got the los tres burritos. I thought one of the burritos was supposed to have beef in it and 2 were supposed to have chicken, but they all came out with shredded chicken. It was still really good. The little burritos were fried so they were crunchy and then topped with Queso. The rice was really good too. But personally, I didn't see anything outstanding compared to other Mexican restaurants. My dining partner got a burrito with the verde sauce on it and I will say, the verde was really good. If I were to go back here I would want to try something with that sauce on it. The chips and salsa were really good. The salsa was super flavorful and the perfect consistency. Overall it was a decent experience! I used to enjoy eating at Agave. They had excellent service and good, quality food. It's seems like both have declined in recent years. The queso is not thick at all, but rather runny. The food has become rather mediocre in flavor and presentation. For example, the ground beef on the nachos was similar in texture and flavor to Taco Bell. Additionally, the service was slow and fairly inattentive as my husband requested napkins and a refill a couple of times before the sever returned with those items. I'll add that the restaurant wasn't particularly full at the time. I think this is the first review I've ever written on Yelp. I felt compelled to do so because this is now our second time at Agave during which we have experienced lower food and service quality. I'm hoping that the owners of Agave will read this review and hopefully make some positive changes. read more

If you're looking for a nice, authentic Mexican restaurant to enjoy a fun family night, look no further than Agave Bar and Grill in Carmel. Weather permitting, there's outdoor dining to enjoy your food along the sidewalk and enjoy the scenes of Carmels Art District. Once inside, the quaint space is decorated by wall art by students from the local high school which adds a nice touch. The bar is fully stocked with your favorite tequilas, bourbons, cognacs and vodkas AND they're not stingy with the alcohol on the drinks! When it came to the food I enjoyed the sopes, tacos and chips & salsa. I was asked if I liked my salsa hot and it was so bold and flavorful. TL;DR: Food taste is ok, price is kinda high, put a mandatory 20% gratuity for a party of 2, wouldn't go again. Stopped in for lunch while walking around the area. It was fairly empty when we sat down and a was starting to get busier by the time we left. The food: Good, not great. The agave dip had a decent taste but was a thinner than I'd like from a queso and at $9 was well more than it should be. I ordered the burria questaco, while the flavors were good, the meet was dry (thankfully they give you a soup that I used to dip into) and the cheese became like a paste as it cooled. Normally I'd do three stars for descent food that is just a little pricey. This place lost an additional star and any chance of me going back due to a mandatory 20% gratuity on a party of 2 AND they recommend an additional 18-22%. The problem here is that I didn't notice that a gratuity had already been added at first and didn't expect one with such a small table. Overall: The service was fine, the food was decent, prices were high, and I don't think I'll be going back here again. read more

"Let me make you one of my famous skinny margaritas - I promise, you'll love it," our kind server told me. I was skeptical if the skinny version of this classic drink, but it was magically as delicious as the other margaritas I tried too. She somehow blended the tequila perfectly while also leaving out a lot of the sugar normally dumped into margs. Good to know - mind as well be a bit healthier, yeah?! Of course, my next round consisted of lots of chips and their homemade guacamole (one of my favorites in town). I've gotten both the fajitas and a grilled chicken breast that had grilled pineapple, cheese and a lot of other toppings - delicious! Apparently the pineapple/cheese ingredients on the menu are what make the dishes traditional Tehuacan (town in Mexico). Very cool! There's an upstairs that you can rent out, as well as seating on the main level and a great patio that overlooks Carmel's Main Street. I went for lunch around 1pm and it was pretty empty. We were seated quickly and able to order our drinks. Once we ordered our food, our server was MIA for the rest of the time. Our water was never refilled the entire time. Our server was hard to understand because they spoke softly. The place was hot inside. I don't think there was an AC. I regret not sitting outside, at least there would have been a breeze. My entree was good though and didn't disappoint. The salsa was average. I ordered the lunch portion fajitas and I had enough for leftovers. My margarita was good too. I was recently in Carmel and hungry so decided to try Agave. At first their outside patio is what made me stop. I went inside and only waited a moment to be greeted. I wanted to be sat outside. but their inside was very cute. I knew I wanted a margarita and when the server told me about the agave I didn't need to hear more (I love orange in my margaritas and this one had a slight orange taste). I'm a sucker for Carnitas and so I ordered the street tacos. They were good (a little dry), but I would order them again. Veteran run business right in the heart of carmel arts and design district also on the trolley route for carmel trolley . We got the 3 chicken Street tacos , beans and rice and I got the chicken salad . The foods portion was good and flavorful and they were given jalapeños on side and hot sauce . The food is a bit pricey but area you are in prices are generally average in downtown carmel . I was a bit disappointed they did not offer brunch or lunch menu or kids menu only dinner menu and service was a bit slow but overall food is great and they let me use by gift card I got from small business Saturday gift card . Agave is a fun Mexican restaurant on Main Street in Carmel. When the weather is warm, they have tables on a nice outdoor patio. It overlooks Main Street, however, it is not bad and when events are going on in downtown Carmel it can be fun. Unfortunately, it was cold the day we visited and we sat inside. The ground floor seating area is small and nicely decorated. They have a large room upstairs for overflow seating or events. We shared the Grilled Nachos for $10 which comes with your choice of steak, chicken or shrimp with onions, bell peppers and tomatoes topped with white queso. We ordered grilled chicken and omitted the bell peppers. They had a very good taste. The chicken was nicely seasoned and the onions were good and caramelized, which we like. When it was served the ingredients were piled in the middle of the chips. We did wish the chicken had been spread out (and a bit more of it) and we were left with a few (but not a lot) of "bare" chips when we were finished. Agave has other non-traditional Mexican items on the menu as well. This makes the restaurant a good choice for those in your party who want something different. They have four different burger options (classic, bacon, Hawaiian, and guacamole). We were still hungry after the nachos so we ordered the chicken wings. They come with your choice of traditional, buffalo or mango habanero sauce. We ordered 12 buffalo wings for $10 (you can get 6 wings for $7.50). The wings were served hot and covered in sauce (just the right amount). They smelled delicious and tasted good. They were not the best buffalo wings in town but this is a Mexican restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised at their quality and good taste given that wings are not the "specialty of the house". We had some wings leftover so we took them home. They heated up nicely in the oven sprinkled with a little bit of water. They still tasted good and made a nice second day meal. Agave has a Breakfast Menu which features various types of omelets and traditional Mexican favorites such as egg burritos and huevos rancheros. Don't expect to visit during breakfast hours though. They open at 11am, so it's breakfast for lunch or brunch. Our server was friendly and well versed on the menu. Our food was served promptly and hot. When we arrived we were only the second table to be seated. When we left, the downstairs was full and people were sitting upstairs. This is a popular Carmel spot. read more

Stop using toxic, horrble smelling Fabuloso cleaner! The food even smells like it. The minute you enter your doors, all you can smell, instead of cooking food is this noxious strong cleaner. I met a friend for lunch and she chose Agave. I had never been and was worried about what I would get since my limited diet. It took some questions with the waitress who was super nice and her and the kitchen helped me go over my choices. I ended up with the shrimp tacos. But I had to leave off the pico/salsa. And I can't eat the beans or rice since they have garlic and onions. I basically had tortillas with shrimp. I asked for some cheese. It's kind of odd to only have the protein in a taco. The shrimp was cooked very well and it was tasty. We had a nice lunch and our waitress was attentive. In the end I won't be headed back anytime soon. My shrimp and tortillas were $14 and then cheese was $2 extra. I didn't even realize that tacos didn't come with cheese. I also don't think they have a child's menu as my friends 1 year old was served a full entrée and charged for one. The whole thing was kind of odd. Upon entering the Agave Bar and Grill, you could see that there was a great vibe in there. People talking and laughing, just having a good time. We were seated withing 3 minutes of waking in. Our waiter/server was Joseph(from Peru)! He was the nicest person you could meet. He took our orders and the food came back within about 30 minutes or less. I ordered the Classic Burger with fries. After sampling some of Agave's food at a recent Yelp Event, I made a point of bookmarking the restaurant as a Thank You for the support they gave our event as well as to support a small business. So when my wife needed to pick up something from a shop in Carmel, I decided to go along and stop by Agave for a late lunch. Located on Main St on the east end of the Arts District, the shop is fortunate to have some public parking on the south side of the building. We found our way in and were greeted promptly and because of the time, allowed to pick our own seating (normally you wait to be seated). We grabbed a spot on the main floor (the upstairs is open when needed) near the windows. There is a bar on the west side of the dining area. After selecting our beverages, my wife went with the Chimichanga and I decided to choose the Tacos de Carne Asada which I saw a lot of great reviews of on Yelp (it is also one of my "go to" selections when trying a Mexican Restaurant for the first time.) In a very brief time, our entrees were delivered (we hadn't even finished the complementary salsa and chips.) My choice came with two corn tortillas with steak, cilantro and onion with refried beans on the side. There was also a spicy sauce to add which added dimension to the flavor. Although I prefer the taste of flour tortillas, the tacos were still pretty tasty. My wife's chicken Chimi came with Mexican rice, pico de gallo, sour cream, and a bit of guac on the side. There was also a cheese sauce over the Chimi. She liked the flavor, but was disappointed that there wasn't any crispness to the shell. The dough was a bit spongy like it had been either undercooked or reheated or the cheese had softened the crust. Not sure what happened, but she was expecting the crispy texture and didn't get it. She did let the staff know about it in a nice way but went ahead and ate her meal anyway. Note: She also was expecting it to be shredded chicken, but instead found a large single piece of chicken (tenderloin or breast meat). The flavors were on the mild side which normally my wife likes, but even she thought it could use a bit more spice. I will say that we really liked the taste of the salsa. It seemed to be more complex than a lot of tomato based salsas....it seemed to have a hint of smoky flavor to me. Service was friendly and attentive and like the rest of the family, sincerely interested in making the dining experience a positive one. Overall, I think the 3.5 star rating is pretty accurate based upon my first dining experience here. Fresh/warm chips and amazing asada! Two words: asada tacos I'm not sure what they season their asada meat with but my tacos were the bomb.com. I squeezed a few lime wedges and dang my mouth is watering just thinking about how good those tacos were. The tacos came with a side of black beans. In my opinion the beans were pretty food, however, they were watery... I'm not sure why ? The staff was friendly and kept bringing out fresh chips (i was going through a basket of chips in like 30 seconds) and i applaud them for being attentive and serving my chip needs! The enchilada Suizas were okay. Not my favorite but also not bad. Definitely did not beat the asada tacos in my opinion. Agave restaurant is pretty expensive compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area. Recommend this place if you are in the Carmel art district and want a quick Mexican bite. Was so excited to see that they had birria tacos on the menu. One of my absolute favorite foods in the world and impossible to get in Carmel. Was so sad once I got my meal to see that this was NOT what I was expecting. If you've had birria tacos, you know that they take some of the consome to fry the taco in once made. It gives you this crispy shell that then is able to hold up as you dip the taco in the consome. When done correctly, it's one of the best meals you'll ever have. Unfortunately for me, the tacos were not put on a heat source after being made and dipping them in the consome gave me a soggy mess. The meat was good (once I removed all the fat). Really hope they play around and perfect these. The consome was really good but the tacos need some work. read more
