Loved everything about this place.... and for two incredible reasons. The manager and the food. We drove up from Greenwood and had been walking all over downtown. We stopped in front of this place and pulled up the Yelp page to review the menu. The manager opened the door and asked if we wanted to come in! YES WE DO! It was banging from that moment on. Great music, the inside is super cute with lots of great plants. This is in a really old building in Fletcher Place with the old keys on the outside of the door. The food was IMPECCABLE! Chips and queso were incredible and my hubby loved his torta. It's simple and delicious, what more could you ask for? I stopped in for a quick lunch and got exactly that. I feel like this is a true hidden gem still considering there was no line at lunch time. Cute little place for tacos, drinks, etc. We walked, but there is street parking. This spot was busy for take out. Not a ton of seating inside, but very nicely designed and space for two or larger parties in the other room. They had a few vegan options for tacos and we ordered several. I haven't been here in almost 6 years and I am kicking myself for not being a regular!! I came on a gorgeous, sunny and 75 day. The doors were open and the sun was shining in the windows. When met with a slightly damp day in July, this place we looked up on Yelp and noticed that we were in the neighborhood. Nestled on the corner of Steven St. and Virginia Ave., this colorful building was inviting and warm. The host welcomed us warmly and we got a great seat near the center of the restaurant. We got drinks and ordered the queso and chips with a side of hot sauce! It was so good. We got the menus and the names of the Tortas, which were really interesting. The "Daddy Yankee" torta for me and a "Bad Bunny" torta for my sister. My meal had breaded steak and, chorizo, chipotle peppers, and mozzarella! It was so spicy and tasted great with the green tomatillo sauce and spicy red sauce. I was sweating but in a good way! We had a concert later that day and wanted to have some eats before we went. Found this spot in Fountain Square and had a great taco lunch. I was hungry so I tried everything that looked good which was a lot! I got steak, chicken and a mushroom taco and they were delicious. They felt authentic with a little twist of having red onions. I might ask to see if they can do white onions next time. The sauces had just the right amount of heat. We tried this for the first time recently and it was such a great date night. The space is small and intimate, so many cute vibes for photos. We ordered chips and queso, the chips were freshly made. We each ordered tortas that were huge and delicious. You could easily split one if you wanted. We also tried one of the tacos which was delicious. We ordered two drinks, and it was one the best margs I've had in so long. Absolutely incredible! They have some of the BEST tortilla chips ever because they use actual tortillas and fry them in-house! I ordered the Totra Ahorgada & couldn't be happier with my choice. The pickled red onions on top were fantastic and the tomato sauce poured over the top had so much flavor! The tortas here are mid at best, not overwhelming, and honestly I felt my chicken Milanesa on my "bad bunny" was way too dry and underwhelming. It was not as loaded as I would have liked. The torta was thin and didn't have a lot of gusto. This for a $15 torta too! The common torta that's delicious runs at max 10! The chips and salsa were delicious. I enjoyed the salsa verde and the other salsas I received with my torta. The esquites were good. The vibe inside is cool, and the service was good. To be honest though, whenever I want a torta I won't be thinking of la Eskina! I had an excellent experience here. I came on a Wednesday around 1 p.m. There was a large family in the front room and I was seated alone in the back room. I'm always wary of being out of the main line of sight, as it can mean servers forgetting about you. That was not the case here. My server checked in frequently enough to be helpful but not enough to be annoying - just the right balance. I was very impressed with the food, drinks, and beauty of the presentation. I ordered a Topo Chico (mineral water). It was served in a chilled bottle, with an optional glass of ice, biodegradable straw (rice, maybe?), and optional lime slices. Lots of the reviews focus on the tortas, but have you tried their tacos? HEAVEN. My favorite birria tacos were nudged down to second place after trying the birria tacos here. They were incredibly flavorful with very few fatty pieces of meat. It came with the standard dipping sauce, but I barely needed it. I had a huitlacoche taco that was equally delicious. Tacos are served with two sauces that are flavorful without being extraordinarily hot. I ordered my tacos without "raw" onion and I was served cooked onion on the side. I'm not sure if that was because of my no onion request or if they are always served this way, but the cooked onions were perfectly charred/caramelized and make a great topping for the tacos. My only complaint about this place is that it isn't closer to my house. But really, that's probably better for my waistline and my wallet that this will be an infrequent treat. read more

The food tasted good, but....... the items were overpriced, and on top of that each item had a 4% fee added to each item on the bill separately if you were paying by credit card. The fee was also taxed and I tried to research whether that was allowable by Tax laws and I was unable to find an answer specifically to that question . I had to fight them to pay by cash to pay without the fees. The manager was very nice but the server was very rude and macho not caring about our request. "La eskina" means "the corner," and this little corner restaurant in Fountain Square has been on my list for awhile. The owners spruced it up and it looks so cute and vibrant. I've tried to stop in two other times on a Monday and it's been closed every time (even though the hours on their front door said they were open on Mondays). We finally stopped in on a Saturday night with a group of friends. I called to make a reservation about an hour before and while I wasn't able to ask in English, I tried in Spanish and they said they'd put us down for a table - woo! When we arrived, I immediately noticed the backlit, colorful Jarritos wall and cute bar. Love the decor! We got sat in the back and there were menus at our seats. I had seen awesome drink menus posted on their Yelp page with elaborate, fruity mocktails, cocktails, margaritas, and more, so I was confused when there were zero drinks on the menu in front of us. When we asked, our server said they had no drink menu, but that they we could have a beer or margarita. Usually there is some kind of choice, but our group just went with whatever margaritas they had. Our server was soooo sweet and smiley, although there was definitely a language barrier that resulted in some wrong orders. My husband and I got the guacamole with pork belly on top, as well as the fajitas, which come with beef, chicken, and shrimp. We never got our one order of fajitas when the rest of our friends got their food and when we asked, they brought us two orders of fajitas. Okay! I thought they were pretty good, but my husband wasn't a fan. We were the only table in there and the whole team (including the kitchen staff) was all hanging at the tables by the door, on their phones. It was only 8:30pm on a Saturday night, but we felt like we should head out so their team could leave too. All in all, I'd love to come back and try again, as our server was so sweet and I've heard the owner is great too. I'm cheering you on and would recommend at least giving them a try! read more

I'm so glad I came across this hidden gem on Fountain square ! It's a small place right on fountain square but could still could get missed . Look out for the green building . We decided to try it on Friday evening as we were looking for a chill place to hangout . The servers were friendly and gave us their recommendations on food and drinks . I'm glad I ordered what they recommended . I had not heard of Tortas before . They were amazing ! I got the Megan Fox Tortas ( yes they are named after celebrities) it was juicy chicken breast , chorizo , queso and mozzarella. The sandwich was delicious and flavorful ! We were searching for another Mexican restaurant in the area only to find that it had moved. A couple on the street recommended this place as "a hole in the wall but very good." Once inside, the dining area was pretty small but quaint and historic. I thought it was cool. The place eventually filled up, and people who came in left because of no seating. I'm not sure if they take reservations. Also, I noted that a one-person carryout order seemed to take a really long time from the time they arrived until they received their order. The wait for our food time was reasonable. Our server was great: polite and as efficient as he could be for as busy as they were. There is no endless bowl of tortilla chips here, everything is a la carte which can add up on your ticket, but they serve homemade tortilla chips that are very good. The queso was traditional, on the runny side. We didn't try the salsa (a la carte). My friend got three different tacos which he enjoyed, I got a torta which seemed of good quality, but just don't think it was for me. Bathrooms were pretty clean, except the roll of toilet paper was sitting on the sink counter, which weirded me out. Would we recommend the place? Probably, if you're in the area and wanting Mexican. Would we make a special trip? Probably not; it is out of the way for us and there are so many other restaurants yet to try! Overall, 4 stars! read more

La Eskina Indy is very great! The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They have so many options for tortas on their menu. They also have some good taco options, including tacos de lomo. They have many Jarritos flavors that are hard to find as well. I didn't get any alcohol, but it looks like they had good margaritas, too. The inside of the restaurant is really pretty. It's cozy and there is a lot of colorful art. Easily accessible from the IndyGo redline (Fletcher place stop), the cultural trail. Parking might be hard to find super close, but it's available. It's located in a very walkable area. Overall this restaurant is amazing. I will be back many times. You have to try this place out!! read more

This used to be one of my regular spots when I lived in Fletcher Place. More recently, they've reopened under new ownership with a slightly tweaked menu. I recently ordered delivery through La Eskina and then last week revisited for lunch. The standout on the menu is the carnitas and especially the guacamole/carnita combo on the appetizer menu (I forget the exact name of it). Their carnitas are very tender and flavorful. Our delivery order had one small mistake/missing item but the food was good overall. During the recent in person visit, service was verrry slow given that there were only four tables at lunch time. Luckily, I had the afternoon off but this would have been a hard meal/timing to swing otherwise. We had ordered chips and salsa (not free, just an fyi) and ended up running inside to check on the order because it had been so long. The new ownership/menu has received a lot of praise for their vibrant agua fresca/non-alcoholic beverage offerings so I was sad to hear that they're no longer offering those when we asked this past week. It seemed to be one of the shiniest new additions to the rebrand/new setup. Overall, a positive experience with some hiccups along the way. read more

There wasn't much space by the door and I wasn't sure if I came in the correct one but someone came by quickly to rescue me. The menu is mainly tacos with some of the celebrity named tortas carried over from the previous establishment. I started with queso and chips. The chips are homemade and not super salty. The queso came in 2 sizes, which was great for solo diners. I decided on 2 tacos, chicken and pastor. Both were delicious. Oh-and the house hot sauce! Use this. It's spicier than the bottled stuff but has a great flavor, too. La Eskina doesn't have a liquor license yet, but don't let that stop you. read more

Tried this place after seeing it on the "hot & new" Yelp section. Once I arrived here, I knew this used to be a Mexican place prior and asking our waiter about it, they took over and changed some menu items, along with extending the hours to reach a bigger audience. Our waiter, Mario, ended up being a good friend and prior coworker of mine- which was such a pleasant surprise to see an old friend. He shared all of his favorite menu items and was full of info when I asked about this place opening. I came with a friend and we split 2 appetizers to get a good sampling of what was offered. We had the fried plantains (a mix of the salty and sweet) and the CXMD Elote. The plantains were so delicious! I was not sure what to expect with the salty option, but was surprised how good they were. Not as salty as I had anticipated. The sweet ones defiantly were my favorite! The Elote was so good and creamy! I ended up getting 2 tacos for my meal, chicken and pastor. They were full of flavor and just the right amount. My friend ended up getting the birria tacos and she said they were delicious! I love that it's a smaller restaurant and an intimate atmosphere it provides. I used to come to the "old tortas place" which occupied the space before, so I thought we should give it a try now that it has a new name and menu. It did not disappoint. The interior is really cute now. A lot of details to admire here. A small cozy place, very inviting overall. I opted for tacos. Tried the pastor, shrimp and the carnitas. All nicely loaded and tasty. I wanted to try the elote, but at $10 I shied away from it. I wish they had indiviual servings of the elote, so you coul djust add an ear or to as a side. My guests indulged in guacamole with pork, which was deemed a little weird but very tasty. Cheese and chips of varying kinds were also appreciated. The tortas are for the bigger appetite from what I've seen. All in all everyone enjoyed their dinners. So come check it out, you won't regret it. read more

When I read there was a New Mexican restaurant in town that had some Mexican street food I had to check it out. When I arrived I realized it is the old Tortas Guicho Dominguez restaurant. I asked if the owners were the same and the server told me it was new owners, but they kept some of the same tortas and concepts. The outside of the building looks beautiful with that fresh coat of white paint and the inside is even more impressive! They put more stained glass inside to match the original on the building and I love that! They also arranged the seats in a more inviting way and gave the bar a really nice update. The whole place was very esthetically pleasing. The cheese sauce was wonderful! Thick and nicely flavored! Probably the best cheese sauce I've had. The chips were homemade, which was a nice treat. They were also delicious! I tried the torta ahogada. I hd never had one before and wanted to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised that the bread wasn't too soggy. The sauce was flavorful and the carnitas were seasoned well. My friend ordered an alambre and really liked it as well. Met a friend at La Eskina Indy for lunch, and we certainly were glad we decided to try it! I used to go to the restaurant that was in this location for tortas fairly regularly, so I was so excited to see that the new menu still has plenty of tortas. I had the Mexico Torta, and my friend had the Torta Ahogada. We also both tried a different limeade, which were both sweet and refreshing at the same time--perfect for a warm day! Both of the salsas they brought out with the food were great as well. I was partial to the red salsa because it was spicier. Overall, everything was incredible and a pretty good price. I love driving by this place It has outdoor seating on a busy corner. It is brightly decorated like Mexican restaurants should be. Bright turquoise, yellow, orange pink. The outside is painted a bright turquoise/green. The menu selection is fun. I had never had a torta and it was yummy. I prefer my Mexican meals to have a side of rice and beans and that wasn't really an option...but I was able to get my torta without cheese, so I appreciate that. My favorite part was the bread. It was fresh, crusty, soft in the middle--perfect. The strawberry margarita was yummy, but I prefer value with the big fish size bowls the size of your head. It was small, and it was not busy for a dinner time rush. We ate inside because it was hot and humid and wanted a little more privacy. The only real negative is that imho it that it was sorta pricey. I would look up the menu and prices and make sure you want to invest that for a meal. Like I said, when I get Mexican I want the whole enchilada, lol! I want to waddle out the door, feeling good and swearing I'm not gonna eat again for the next three days...and feel like I got the most for my buck. Buuuuuut, it is also close to downtown, across the interstate from Fountain Square...so maybe that's how they justify their prices. Plus with the torta it is a bit more of a niché. Idk. La Eskina holds up the fabulous little corner of Fletcher Place. The business has been there for as long as I can remember. Previously they were a typical Torta (Sandwich) Restaurant with a comical name for various Torta options. However, new generations have taken over Eskina. The space got a refresh on the outside with a modern more trendy look. The building on the humble corner once a highlighter orange is now a calming off-white color with a pop of turquoise on the trim, a dark wood-stained door, stained glass colorful accents, and a sophisticated cursive name on the door. Upon entering the space you'll find a variety of seating options, with the hostess desk at the back of the first room next to the small but efficient kitchen. Directly to the left of the hostess desk is an insta-worthy wall with color-coordinated La Jarritos (Mexican Sodas). The interior is a mix of trendy pieces, and calming sophisticated white walls with pops of whitewashed brick showing through. A friendly greeting upon walking through the door and I ordered a to-go very late brunch. They kindly took my order and were very helpful with all my food allergies and dietary needs. I got breakfast tacos (no avocado AL*). The tacos came on homemade corn tortillas, loaded eggs, cilantro, onion, a few limes and cucumbers (FYI this is how you know tacos are legit), and salsa verde at my request. We also got a breakfast Torta with Egg, chorizo, veg, and queso fresco, it was LOADED. La Eskina is a fabulous local restaurant! I went on a Saturday night a little after 9 and am surprised no one was there. There is a lot of seating, way more than 4 tables that someone said in an earlier review. My friend and I got the Queso and Birria tacos and they were amazing. I'd make the 20 minute drive just to go get them again. The chips were freshly made and the queso was thick and was probably top 5 quesos I've had in Indy. The Birria meat was tender and juicy. The dipping sauce was flavorful and there was plenty left once we finished. Definitely go here if you're looking for authentic Mexican food! read more

I stopped in La Eskina for a quick meet up with a friend. Between lunch and dinner, we had the place to ourselves. I was thrilled to see their drink menu with nonalcoholic options. The Frida Kahlo and La Fresca Poblana were beautiful and incredibly delicious! We split an appetizer of the Esquites, Mexican street corn, it was tangy and had loads of flavor.
