We stopped here on our way back from the coast and my expectation were not particularly high since it's a much younger winery than it's neighbors. But to my surprise, they have a lot of really delicious wines, and fairly good prices compared to a lot of wineries in the Willamette Valley (several bottles were under $20). The farmhouse white and reds were an especially good bargain - both $10 and really yummy for an everyday wine. And the winery itself is really cute - an older yellow farmhouse with nicely landscapes grounds. read more

My husband and I love taking friends and family from out of state to this gorgeous winery! It really shows what Oregon has to offer. Beautiful wine and a view with nothing else in sight but the vineyard and mountains. The staff is friendly and the events are a lot of fun! The farmhouse red is an inexpensive table red that almost anyone can enjoy. Be sure to bring a picnic and hang out for a while. They're also dog friendly, just don't allow pups in the tasting room. As a limousine driver, I was absolutely taken away by this place. The property and acres of vineyards surrounding the area are just absolutely breathtaking and gorgeous, and the tasting room itself is probably one of the most impressive I've seen simply with how clean it is. There aren't even any signs of bugs in the picnic area, everything is just extremely well kept and maintained. The staff are just as friendly, and incredibly accomodating. They instantly recognized me as the driver and offered me a free soda and genuinely welcomed me as another customer to their establishment. I've been stopping in to David Hill, off and on, for the last 10 years. In the last year we decided to become wine club members for several reasons. - Staff - You will not find a more congenial group of tasting room people! Hannah, who is there most days is always fun to talk to and very educated on the wines that David Hill produces. We have seen her on slow days and on those fast paced weekends when the whole room is busy. As a business owner myself, customer service when you are under pressure is paramount. She and the other staff handle it well! On our last visit they took care of a large tour bus of people buying cases of wine, as well as 3 wine club members picking up their orders, on top of a few newbie tasters. Well done guys! - Wine - A decade ago the wines here were "acceptable". But many local wineries outdid their Pinot Noir offerings. That is not the case now! Their BlackJack and Cuvee bottles are TOP NOTCH. And if you are looking for a value and very drinkable Pinot, they have their 2011 Reserve on sale for less than $20. Get it while you can... And you can't beat their 7 tastings for $10. You are given two glasses (large and small) depending on which wines you choose that will pair best with the style being poured. In our experience, pours are NEVER stingy. And if you really want another taste, they are always accommodating. They WANT you to taste their wines and are proud of what they produce. - Location - The remodeled 1800's farmhouse is well done, with awesome views. They have a nice porch to sit on and sip a glass, or several picnic tables all around to enjoy the view while you have a snack and a sip. - Other - They have Olympia Provisions salami for sale, as well as a selection of cheeses and other snacks. If you ask, they will loan you a cutting board and knife to take with you if you want to use a picnic table outside. Also, they are very kid friendly. There are tables inside away from the tasting bar that kids can be comfortable at, while still in eyesight. Ultimately David Hill get two thumbs up from us! This tasting room is beautiful and the grounds are also really nice. We came in and had a glass of wine while sitting out on the lawn looking at the vineyard. Relaxing and beautiful. The wines are quite good, but we felt the female sommelier was a bit brusque and said some odd things. We would return but we didn't feel that she made the experience special at all. Also, this winery claims to be dog friendly, but dogs are not allowed in the tasting room, so I don't consider that dog friendly. We would return but there are some things that could be improved upon. read more

I drove out to David Hill to visit a friend that works there. I am not disappointed that I did! Marianne (my friend) was super professional and friendly with other customers and it was great watching her do something she loves. The other woman in the tasting room was very friendly as well. I tasted wines and bought a bottle of the Farmhouse Red to take home to California. There are some amazing views at this place, all hills and greenery. Was fun to go outside and snap some photos with my glass of wine. The wines were all fantastic! I will definitely be back to David Hill. read more

I fell in-love with David Hill Winery at the Newport Seafood and Wine festival. As soon as my husband and I decided to do a little wine tasting for our anniversary weekend I knew I just had to stop here first! So glad I did!! The view is amazing and the tasting room is located inside a cute yellow farmhouse. It's just perfect. $5 for 7 tastings with the fee waived with purchase. We decided to join the wine club (one of our many) after hearing the amazing deals the wine club memebers get. My favorite wine from there is the Black Jack Pinot Noir. It's a must try! read more

Unfortunate visit experience. 4 of us went to share a bottle on the grounds which are pretty. Took awhile to get service. Young blond woman behind counter. We tried to strike up a pleasant conversation with her by saying we just had some of their wine which we really enjoyed. She didn't seem interested at all and annoyed at our couple questions on whether the wine we had the another night was for sale. We then purchased a bottle and she gave us the wine glasses. They were the very large stemless variety. I asked for a stem glass instead as I have small hands and bad arthritis- means it's hard to grip this type of glass. She was obviously annoyed by this. My sister asked for the same and at this point she rolls her eyes. She gives us the other wine glass and does not give us the bottle. Unreal rudeness. This person should not work at a winery or in any hospitality situation. The wine is good and I usually always contribute to wineries to help the industry. Not here. Horrible service. read more

Wines are reasonable in both taste and value. We really like their Tempranillo which is well balanced and has a typical spicy bite to it. The view is very nice and relaxed. Take a picnic and enjoy the lawn during the better weather. They have some snack/eats if you forget to pack a lunch. Tasting room tends to be crowded. We are members and do not get their email reminders so are going to ask they call us when the pickups are ready each time. Would suggest you do the same. read more

This place was just mediocre for me, and it really boiled down to the service. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and it was pretty busy, so the tasting room was really loud. They give you a sheet with all the wines available for tasting and let you select 7 to try, for $10. They will waive one tasting fee for every $40 you spend on wine. The initial girl that was serving us was not very pleasant so it kinda turned me off from the start. I believe it was the owner that was also pouring wine and she was much nicer but it came a little too late. Not to mention they are super stingy on the pours. I know this is a tasting, I am not looking for half a glass or anything, but I would like to take more than 1 sip of my wine so I dunno... I can actually taste it. At one point the first girl poured the very last of the bottle for me and it barely was half a sip.. and she didn't even bother to open another bottle and complete the pour. I felt jipped and it was poor customer service. They also sell pepper sauces that are made in Brazil and sold in house which are pretty tasty if you like that sort of thing. They offer tiny samples on spoons that they pair with certain wines, or at least they were when we were there. The first girl filled the tiny spoon and gave it to one of the members in my group not asking her if she liked spicy or even if she really wanted to try it. It ended up being pretty spicy and the sample was too large, it should have only been a couple drops. Who gives spoon fulls of hot sauce out?? Anyway, our friend is not very tolerant of spicy things and had a hard time getting the spice out of her mouth. Be wary if offered the sauce samples, just take a little bit not the entire spoonful all at once since they do range in heat. The views are nice outside and they have picnic tables and chairs to enjoy food you bring yourself. The wines were tasty, but with so many other options in the area, I will probably not be returning due to the service and size of the pours. read more

I've gone wine tasting at a few wineries, and my favorite wine tasting experience was at David Hill! They have it all when it comes to wine tasting... the wines are delicious, the employees are wonderful, and the atmosphere is fancy yet quaint and welcoming at the same time! The employees were super professional and friendly; one even made sure she said hello to me and my friend even though she was pouring for another group, and the gentleman helping us was very earnest and helped make for an inviting atmosphere. There were also a lot of cool foods and souvenirs there, and you get a complimentary piece of chocolate if you taste the dessert wine. That was a classy and SWEET touch! read more

Fun wine tasting stop - very laid back.

After reading all the great reviews i ventured out here on a wine tasting adventure day. The wine was good, and so was the view. However, one of the best parts of wine tasting is talking to the people who pour your wine. We were the only people in there but she rushed through our pourings and seemed preoccupied with other things. If you are into quality conversation with wine pourers, this is not the place. read more

I hardly ever post reviews but I had to give David Hill five stars. I took a clumsy (sober) fall outside the tasting room and ended up with a sprained ankle. They immediately brought me towels and a first aid kit and replaced my broken bottle too! PS: wines are great too! read more

We visited David Hill this past Sunday around 4:20 pm. When we pulled up, we noted that the house was very cute, both inside and out. The views were lovely. Sadly, that's where the enjoyment ended. We walked up to the counter and ordered our flight. There were about 4 - 5 young females and 1 older male working the wines. Our first taste was poured with only the name of the wine given. I stood there a moment then asked the girl if she could tell us about the wine. She quickly replied, no. I stood there shocked so she tried to come up with something but could only manage that it was a white wine grown from their property and it's not her favorite. For the next wine I thought ok let's try this again and got the attention of a different worker hoping she would be able to offer us information regarding the wines. The girl stated the name of the wine, poured, and walked away. We were beyond shocked and thoroughly disappointed as this was our last stop after two wonderful days which included 14 fabulous winery visits throughout the Willamette Valley. Never have we ever encountered such lack of knowledge in all our wine travels. Not one worker gave any patron any knowledge of the land, the family, the vines, the vineyard, etc. It was only here's your wine enjoy. One group came in around 4:40 and purchased a flight then asked about a wine plate. The girl responded with, "They're $16 but if you want one you'll need to order it pretty quick because we're closing at 5:00." It's this sad mindset that takes away from a place trying to offer wine education and create a wonderful experience and instead seems their sole interest lies in just making a buck and getting out of there. read more
