It was spontaneous plan and decided to visit, it was on the list of wine passport. They have two flights 5 pours for $10, 7 pours for $14. (Thought they could pour a little more per serving...) My favorite was Pino Gri, crisp and refreshing, and Cuvée, deep aroma and clean finish. Nice backyard like space in front of their vineyards, you can bring dogs, throw a birthday party, and can do nice picnic on weekend afternoon. Very pleased to find this place for my girlfriend and I while on our anniversary weekend staying in Forest Grove. On the drive up to the winery in the hills was very breathtaking. Pulling up to the house was also amazing with the views of vineyards all around the main house. We made reservations prior to arrival and when we got there we were promptly seated and served our wine and charcuterie board. My first visit to David Hill Winery was easily one of my favorite tasting room experiences of the many I've had in Oregon. Good wine at affordable prices, charming tasting room, warm hopsitality, beautiful setting. Details follow. SETTING: The winery is named for it's location off David Hill road which was named for one of the area's early settlers. Setting is beautiful with vineyards surrounding and picnic tables on a lawn behind the tasting room. Easy to find with GPS. TASTING ROOM: The tasting room, which is in an 1830's old house which was salvaged and renovated to be the same, is bright and welcoming. Fully accessible. If you can't navigate the stairs in the front, there is a ramp in the back with an accessible parking spot across. One of the two loo is accessible too. TASTING SET UP: Uber friendly, charming and knowledgable hostess (Carrie) led us through the tasting. The set up for tasting here is my favorite of formats in which you can choose from a selection of wines those which are of most interest to you to try. Much prefer this over a "fixed card" sampling. In this case, the options are any of the wines made by David Hill (with perhaps the exception of a single Pinot Noir reserved for wine club members only) and for only $5 you are able to taste seven wines. Made all the better by the fact the wines are delightfully good. Even remarkable in the case of two of the seven tasted. WINES: My husband's and my favorite of the seven wines we sampled was the 2009 Blackjack Pinot Noir ($55). So named because it comes from the vineyard's Block 21. (Get it? Of course you do.) We think this is arguably the best of all 2009 Oregon Pinot Noirs we've sampled including those made in the Dundee Hills. We enjoyed all the wines sampled and the ones in the lower price points (around fifteen bucks a bottle as I recall), a blended white called Cumberland Vineyards and a blended red called Farmhouse Red are a great value for really good wines. The white contains a good share of Pinot Blanc, one of my favorite white varietals which is starting to be bottled as a single varietal in other parts of the Willamette Valley (with Four Graces perhaps producing the stand out of that varietal) and which I hope David Hill might also bottle as a single varietal eventually because in the blend it was distinct and delicious. Other standouts were the Reserve Merlot, no kidding...the varietal is making a comeback now that "Sideways Effect" has worn off and a Port of Muscat ($28). The latter was apricot - caramel, delicious and just sweet enough but not too much. (They were sold out of the Port of Pinot Noir but no worries.) We who like Port are fortunate that David Hill (and nearby friendly competitor Montinore) sends their port wines to be fortified by Clear Creek Distillery in Portland. In everything is connected to everything else mode, having that fabulous distiller in the mix is an excellent thing for Port quality. All David Hill wines including, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gerwirtztraminer, Merlot, Temperanillo, the blends and Port are proof that a vintner can make really good, drinkable wines and keep the price point within reach for everyone. They even have a Pinot Noir around $20 (others in the $35 - $55 range). THIS N THAT: 1) WINERY DOGS: Three delightful winery dogs, a Golden Retriever, an Australian Shepherd, and a Catahoula mix are on hand to greet visitors. Two of the three are featured in the Winery Dogs book available to purchase in the tasting room. If you want to take a nice drive out in the country outside if the Forest Grove area you need to include a visit to David Hill Winery. In the summer months the gorgeous surroundings alone are reason to come here, and the wine is the icing on the cake. Some of the Gewürztraminer vines here were planted in 1965 making them some of the oldest in the state. That carries over to great wine! The tasting room, which is located in an 1883 farmhouse on the property, is open 11-5 daily. Yes, there has been wine production on this property off and on since the 1880's. The customer service in the tasting room could improve a bit. I have been here several times and the people working here could be a bit more friendly. The wines currently are Rose, Pinot's, Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Tempranillo, Merlot and they even have a couple Ports. The drive out to Forest Grove from downtown Portland was gorgeous. The vineyard is nestled away in the country and in the middle of farmland. Such a rare sight these days but so worth the drive. The tasting room is bright, beautifully lit and filled with a lot of history. The hostess was friendly, inviting and held a conversation with ease. My boyfriend and I stopped in before heading to a wedding, hoping to get a glass of wine or do a tasting. We didn't make a reservation, but the hostess was super helpful and accommodating and found a spot for us. We ended up buying a bottle of Pinot Noir because it was so good. We were asked which tasting we wanted and then they poured without any comment at all. It was weird. I've been to many wineries over the years and they are usually eager to tell you about what you are tasting. Not here. The whites were all mediocre. Had high hopes for the pinot noir but it was weak and acidic on the finish. The tempranillo was lovely. Paid up, got out. The point of sale screen suggested a tip. For what?? I felt like a bystander in some weird discriminatory Trump country scenario. We showed up SUPER late, so I totally understand that was super inconvenient for the restaurant. (We were very willing to wait our turn for a table and potentially come back at a later time since I'm sure our reservation had expired.) I also know restaurants are being really diligent about Covid rules. (They want groups to remain six people or under. We had seven. Fair enough, totally understand, let's make two reservations- one for four, one for three) With those things at the top of my mind, I still can't wrap my head around what just happened. I hate to even have to describe our appearance because it feels so unnecessary but all seven of us were sober, wearing nice clothes, wearing masks, closed-toed shoes... and four of us are gay. When we walked up to the counter we were apologetic about our obscene lateness, but met with some weird shortness from the hostess who explained "there's no room for you in here." I did happen to catch a glimpse of the outdoor seating and noticed only two of their eight tables were seated. No worries, maybe they're booked? My friend continued and said we would love to come in and try the wine at some point. And again we were met with some insistence saying "we're completely booked." After my friend pressed the matter a little more it was revealed that they don't want to let us in because we are a party of seven. But we explained that we didn't plan on sitting together. For some reason our plan wasn't good enough. They changed their story and explained that "if you've been wine tasting at other locations we don't want you to come in and be loud." My friend assured them we haven't been wine tasting and we won't be loud. Alas, we were never allowed in. Why? We still don't know, we got at least three reasons. We're currently wine tasting at Apolloni Vine area which is gorgeous no one turned us away for any obscure reasons. Go there instead!! read more

If you like wine and being discriminated against; this is the winery for you. Hate to describe the group we were with - well dressed and well behaved group. Not that it should matter, but 4 people were gay. To start, we were late, 30 minutes late. But our reservation was for an hour and a half and even though they weren't full they refused to seat us. Accused us of being drunk despite coming straight from home. Accused us of being in too big of a group, despite having two separate reservations to minimize proximity. We all had masks and despite all of the available tables, we were turned away. It felt humiliating. read more

Arrived within our reservation time slot (albeit 30 minutes late) and were rudely turned away and told they had "no room for the rest of the day" -- after politely asking why our reserved tables were not available for the remaining hour of our reserved time slot the manager admitted they did have room but she thought we may be "too loud" -- we are a sober, polite group of women and gay men in our late 30s. Keep in mind there were countless empty tables and the same staff was politely seat other people. We went here and it was literally the worst customer service I have ever experienced at any establishment. David Hill ~ What an amazing array of Pinot's you have! Let alone an amazing VIEW of their 45-acre valley! So picturesque! (Guys, take note of this winery for a date place *ahem*ahem*) Arriving to David Hill, it was a bit of a bumpy ride due to the gravel road leading up to the winery. Upon parking, there are about 3 medium-sized friendly dogs which roam around the winery and greet the visitors. They're cute and friendly dogs! Amidst the valley of vineyards, lies a yellow house, which is the tasting room for David Hill. What was tasted at this phenomenal winery? WHITES *Estate Gewurztraminer (2009; $16/bottle) - a simple, dry, white wine which had a hint of honeysuckle and spice. *Estate Pinot Gris (2011; $18/bottle) - probably my favorite from the set of whites that I had tried out. This Pinot Gris had an essence of grapefruit, which was quite surprisingly refreshing. *Estate Reserve Chardonnay (2009; $18/bottle) - had hints of green apple and "mineral notes" *Estate Riesling (2010; $18/bottle) - had the same components as the Estate Reserve Chardonnay. Between the both of the two, the Riesling was much sweeter. REDS *Estate Pinot Noir (2009; $16/bottle) - was quite exuberant! Full of spices and cherry essences were quite delightful! *Estate Reserve Pinot Noir (2008; $32/bottle) - was very aromatic, earthy and much more pronounced than the 2009, yet had a crisp ending. *Reserve Merlot (2008; $28/bottle) - was delivered with a piece of milk chocolate. Enjoy the piece of chocolate, then take a sip of the Merlot - lo and behold, an amazing burst of wine-gasms emit upon your taste buds. You'll love David Hill if you're into Rieslings, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaners and Semillions. Most of their wines are award winning! The lady checking our party in was super rude. We had 8 in our group and she made sure to tell us that "they texted to make sure we knew we weren't going to be seated together". She was very unprofessional and when she seated us and said, "well I see so-and-so isn't happy from your group so you can just leave if you want". This place was icky and made you feel like they are better than you. The gorgeous grounds are enough reason to come wine tasting here! One of the prettiest vineyards I have seen. The drive up is gorgeous and there are plenty of ground to cover wandering around with a glass of Pinot. Bring a picnic or pick up some of their cheese, sausage and crackers and open a bottle. Beautiful grounds! The tasting was 7 wines for 10 dollars and waived if you spend 40 dollars or more on wine. You choose the 7 you want from whites, reds and dessert wines. I'm in customer service and a General Manager of a hotel, if any of my staff ever treated a customer the way we were treated then they would no longer have a job at our establishment. This has become one of my absolute favorites when I'm in the mood for a tasting and a picnic! They have a nice standard lineup as far as their wines go, but I am rarely, if ever, disappointed. They have a healthy balance of whites to reds that they produce along with a couple ports/dessert wines usually. The staff is friendly, but aren't always able to answer my questions about the wines. Just want to mention that they have two clean, beautiful public restrooms on site. $5 tasting fee per person but they do subtract it from the price of a bottle if you end up buying one...which you probably will...or even two... I believe the bottle prices run from about $18 to $60. And if you REALLY fall in love they have a wine club membership they will be happy to give you the scoop on. I love this place because it gives a nice, well-rounded tasting experience without pretension. Picnic here! You won't regret it. I like to bring my own food, but they are pretty good at keeping picnic items on hand to purchase: glasses, cheese, crackers, etc. The views are breathtaking, especially in the late Spring through Summer. It's the perfect place to go and sip a little wine and relax on any day, but especially a nice sunny one. They have a few picnic tables and chairs to chill and hang out outside while you sip. Had a wonderful time yesterday at David Hill at the picnic table area ( with a reservation). The sun was out, it was cool and they had warned us to bring a blanket, which we did. They are very good in following Covid 19 restrictions here and we felt very comfortable. Weirdest experience. Had a reservation for an hour and a half, but showed up 20 minutes late (our fault). We showed up and they said they were full and had no room. I said we should still have time as it's an hour and a half reservation and they said they were full. The manager (I assume) then started saying that we would be loud and said they wouldn't seat us. They clearly didn't want us there and could have just said that. If they gave our table away then totally understandable.. but don't make weird excuses as to why we can't be sat.
