No question it was from David Chen's as he had nothing else to eat that day, but Susan (Manager there) still was very argumentative when we told her. We were excited to hear they were reopening after closing for Covid-19. We have eaten here before and felt the food to be pretty good. I'm Chinese so I consider myself a good judge of Chinese food. I was astounded and had to write this review right away. We just got our takeout and tasted the food. It was horrible!!! The fried dumplings skin was so thick and chewy unlike anything like it in the world of dumplings! The baby corn in the fish dish was rancid. It is apparent they were getting rid of old food in their kitchen. The Ma Po tofu seemed like it was made by someone who had no clue how to make it. It was made without ground pork, carrots or peas. The cook threw in canned mushrooms though!?! It was also inedible because he also threw in so much red pepper flakes it made my tongue and lips tingle. Lastly the Singapore Mai fun was the opposite- no curry flavor and the meats appeared past its time. This restaurant needs to work on getting back its stars. They should start by throwing out old spoiled food. read more

A co worker and I ordered from here about a week ago I ordered their Kung Pao chicken it came just as it should in bite sized pieces not in strips of chicken like some chinese places do. The sauces are of great texture and very spicy the way it should come. overall 4/5 stars since I have yet to visit the establishment. I will order from David Chen again. read more

one of my coworkers is absurdly nosy and loud. you know, the preachy type who think that everyone NEEDS to hear their opinion on everything (coincidentally, he's a bleeding-heart liberal - but I digress)...so when he overheard recently that we were ordering from David Chen, he began complaining about how the food is not good anymore, that it's a waste of money, that it's not flavorful at all, yada yada yada... empirical evidence proved him wrong. lo and behold, the lunch specials are still tasty. I think the prices have gone up about a dollar since 2010 (we haven't ordered from here in a while, admittedly). I got the hunan beef with black bean sauce - had a nice spicy kick to it! they have also expanded the menu a bit. some Thai and Malay dishes are now included. is it Chinatown or Flushing quality/price? no, of course not. but it's probably among the best Chinese takeout I've had. read more

I give Chen 4 stars because it's decent quality food combined with a throwback to the era when Chinese food meant a healthy combination of Cantonese style and Hawaiian, the mainstay of the 1960's & 70's. It's far from authentic. It's purely Americanized but still an easy, delightful meal which brings me back to Sunday evenings at Wing Ho in Great Neck when I was a kid. Every single time I order takeout the woman who answers the phone hangs up before telling me how long it will be until it is ready. Is she really under as much constant stress as her phone manners indicate?? Food is ok. Sometimes good sometimes bland. Have ordered delivery for over 15 years... it's just great and always consistent. Excellent vegetable dumplings and cold sesame noodles. The Green Jade Chicken is something I haven't seen similar elsewhere and is wonderful. I love this restaurant and will continue to go back for years to come. I always request to go on my birthday because the people there are so warm and friendly, they make it such a joyous event. They bring out free ice cream with candles and all the waiters and the entire restaurant stops and sings for you. Its such a warm and happy place to celebrate such an occasion. My favorite meal which has never disappointed me would have to be the fried dumplings and the scallion pancakes, it's even better when you order it with an egg on top. It's absolutely delicious and just thinking about it makes my mouth water. This place is such a warm and inviting restaurant. The staff knows you by name or recognizes your face. The food is always hot and delicious and if theres a problem the staff is literally jumping through hoops to make it all better. All you have to do is ask. I feel like when people complain that theres a problem with their meal they never tell the staff. they just sit there and wait until the meal is done and complain about how bad the service or food is. But it's human nature to make mistakes and the staff won't know that there's a problem unless you tell them. And if there is a problem, the staff won't hesitate to fix it and try to make their customers happy. Because that's what this place is, a happy restaurant filled with happy people trying to make other people happy with their food. read more

We've been coming here for a long time and this place has had it's ups and downs. It could be a matter of who is doing the cooking and how much of a hurry they are in at any given time (why not slow down and get it right). The best quality Chinese cuisine in Westchester. I drive from the river towns just to dine at David Chen. The restaurant has an traditional old school feel which is great. The staff is very attentive and kind. They always remember your favorite dishes!! The food is always fresh, and prepared to perfection. Yikes, probably some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. It was so bland I actually had to SALT my food! Dumplings were way too doughy, sesame beef tasted like overcooked shoestrings, moo shu pork was an ode to cabbage and the shrimp fried rice was underseasoned rice with all of 4 shrimp in it. Only the cashew chicken is deserving of the one star, because it was actually edible. Best in Westchester - I think not. read more

We went here because we wanted plain old Chinese food and read all of the reviews. All of the food we ordered was fresh, not greasy, and delicious. The fried rice is the best we have tasted anywhere north of Chinatown in NYC. Service is excellent. What I like about this place is that they give you such large portions. My main gripe with many Chinese restaurant today is that the food is delicious, but you're done with it in 5 minutes. This place is really unique because they give you such big portions, a huge plus in my book. Also, they do not deep fry the meat dishes which makes them taste so much better. Too many Chinese restaurants around deep fry their dishes to death, making them unedible. A small gripe is that some of the workers there aren't very fluent in English so the service can be short and curt. But that's only a small problem. read more

Good food, big variety, fair price, large portions! There is a bit of inconsistancy, I guess depending on the day's cook but only varying from average to great - never bad, don't listen to those reviews that say otherwise. The portions are large (could be shared) and the prices are fair. As far as some reviews about price discrepencies, just ask for the total before you hang up (how hard is that? - first time ordering ... anything?). My office orders every week and while yes I would say it takes some time for delivery . We order at lunch time and the better a resturaunt is the busier they will be.
