This place has been hyped up for years and I'd been putting off trying it out because I assumed it wouldn't be worth it. However, I was pleasantly surprised and ended up really enjoying my food. My sister and I placed an online order for pickup. It was ready by the time we got there on a Monday around lunch time. I can't speak to the vibe of the place because we ate in the car. I ordered a mild slider and tender with some fries. The slider had a decent kick and I probably could have ordered a level up or two in spice. First time to try Dave's Hot Chicken. I've been wanting to try them ever since they arrived in Houston, but, never had the chance as the rest of my family would never attempt truly hot chicken. I decided to go with the slider #4 on the menu (one slider is enough for an average meal). It was absolutely delicious and HOT as advertised. You can choose your level of spiciness. I chose "Hot" because... Hot. I was not disappointed. This is MY kind of hot. Not too hot, but, just enough to put my body in shock for about half an hour. And the flavors of the hot coating were top notch, kind of like a thai chili/cajun flavor, and with just a hint of sweet aftertaste. I love the extra pickles in the box. Let me take a moment to talk about their fries... each fry was a tiny savory confection with a super thin layer of crispiness on the outside and a creamy potato center inside; lightly dusted with cajun spice, and they stayed hot for about 20 minutes. I'm not usually a fry person because of the carbs and the heaviness of standard french fries, but, I wanted to eat every one of these little beauties. They didn't even need ketchup! I got the #2 with two sliders and fries at the medium level. The sliders were not too big and were the perfect size for me, as a usual burger is always a bit too much for me. However, if you like bigger servings than one slider may be a bit smaller. The fries were hot, and the crinkle-cut makes it crispy. The chicken was crispy on the edges and were fresh, but it was not very spicy. I got the medium, and my friend got the hot level. However, I would not say it is spicy at all. Bursting with seasoning and flavor, topped with pickles and coleslaw and their sauce. The French fries are crispy, golden and crinkled. Their level of heat for the chicken varies from " no spice - light mild - mild - medium - hot - extra hot - reaper". I usually go with the hot, but my next choice will be extra hot and then reaper for the challenge. Ambiance is fine. The heat was good considering everyone has different definitions of what hot is. There was a nice amount of heat. The mac & cheese was super creamy and delicious. it looked like they were understaffed this particular afternoon, but they hustled and got everyone's orders very quickly without sacrificing food quality. My first time trying Dave hot chicken and based on the price and quality, will be my last. I love the chicken, the flavors, the crispy pickles and the snap from it, but a competitor comes to mind, Raisin Canes. So think about it, for a 2 tender, 2 slices of bread, pickles, a side of dipping sauce, and NO DRINk for $12.49, I just don't see the value. A Raisin Cane 3 finger combo with a drink, same deal: toast, fries, dipping sauce and 1 extra tender for $9.23, I just feel the value isn't here at Dave's. I will say the spice level is amazing, it's wayy more intense than Canes since I got the hot spice. Dave hot chicken is an amazing taste and competitor but it's too expensive, less chicken 2 tenders vs 3, and the tenders I got, were paper thin. I mean did the tenders come from a farm that didn't feed its chickens? Buffalo Wild Wings, Wing stop tenders, alll are better than Dave. While this location seems to be more modern and clean, most likely due to it opening recently, there's nothing exciting about it. I would much rather support a local small business than a chain I can find for much richer food. It was lunch and we did not want to go to Phoenicia without food. We order the tenders with fries. The sauce is Mayo heavy, so if you do not like Mayo avoid it.
