    Omakase Night
    Ilene M.

We finally made it to this new sushi spot everyone is talking about. I love that this new place changed the vibe of the corner of 5th and university. We came on a Saturday, very busy and waited 30min for a table (worth the wait ). We sat at the bar and we shared an omakase plate and Karagi chicken. The sushi was fresh, melt in your mouth! And they served it with real wasabi. The chef gave us a sample of a fish to try, it was so good! Ambiance: 5* Food: 5* Location: 5* Prices: very reasonable Definitely one of my favorite sushi spots in SD.

I was super stoked to dine at DASHI, as I've heard only great things about them from my friends. Surprisingly the bar was comfortable and spacious for all of our items. I wanted to try various items, which will have to be divided into different visits, because I really enjoyed everything! Salmon Crispy Rice (4/5): Perfect appetizer of chopped salmon piled on top of crispy rice patties and topped with tobiko and aioli. Monkfish (4/5): Their serving size is very generous, and the texture of monkfish was creamy. This was one of their specials! Scallop Nigiri (5/5): The scallops were so soft and melts in your mouth! Sashimi Flight (5/5): Every single slice of fish was extremely buttery, and I received Salmon, Tuna, and two other white fish. Hillcrest Roll (4/5): A protein style roll, with a variety of fish and wrapped neatly in cucumber and dressed in ponzu. So delicious! I am SO looking forward to revisiting DASHI! Their menu is unique, plus their quality of seafood is more than your casual sushi restaurant. The plating was thoughtful, the food presentation looks neat, and most importantly, everything was delicious!

Come here!!! Everyone come one come all to one of the best sushi restaurants in hillcrest!! I have been driving past this place since August, saying I wanted to go and omg omg I am so glad I did. This is gonna be my new local spot! The miso mac and cheese is amazing and could've been a meal! I kinda wish I hadnt ordered a full meal outside of the mac and cheese. I got two rolls based on our amazing waitress's recommendation- the lemon glow and the oyabun! The lemon was my favorite. So flavorful My two companions got sashimi and nigiri - cut to perfection and were delicious! We walked in at 5:30 to a semi empty restaurant, but by the time we left every table inside and out and the sushi bar were packed. It was so good. I can't wait to come again.

Come for the sushi, stay for shoveling delicious garlic edamame into your mouth with a shovel! This newer sushi spot in Hillcrest is beautifully decorated with bespoke custom Japanese wall paintings and wood finishes. I started with the garlic edamame and ended with the garlic edamame as it was deliciously spicy, not clumpy, and well steamed. Between my edamame enjoyment I also ate the: - Wagyu Skewers which were incredddddibly flavorful and perfectly cooked. They're definitely a must try. - (1) Point Break Roll which has a thiiiuuuckk cut of tuna and was nice and spicy. Definitely get it. - (2) Kraken Roll adorned with a nice crunch from the red onions. Superbly get it. - (3) Daruma Roll with spicy tuna and a marinated jalapeño, but curiously wasn't that spicy. I would consider it again. - (4) Kami Roll which was very truffle forward. Like too much truffle. Stamped as Grant H avoid. The staff was super accommodating, especially as we got there later than I thought. The food came out quick, tasty, and nicely plated! Definitely hit this spot up and satiate your sushi fix!

Tried Dashi for the first time on a Saturday night. They were quite busy but we were seated relatively quickly! The place is a little small but they have seating at the bar and a few tables outside with no heaters. But overall everyone was super super kind! From the hostess, to the servers and the chefs! That alone would keep me coming back. But the food was actually really good!? I was pleasently surprised how each plate of sushi was well crafted and decently priced. Everything was extremely flavorful! Its very modern and it's not your standard flavors but I very much enjoyed it! Highly recommend!!

We were looking to try a new sushi spot and remembered I had this place bookmarked for a while. It's located in Hillcrest and seems relatively new. We called ahead on a weekday to check if we needed a reservation and were told we didn't. We arrived around 6:30 pm and were seated right away, but it started getting busy shortly after--so it might be a good idea to make a reservation, especially later in the evening. We ordered miso soup, cucumber sunomono, and three rolls. The rolls were the highlight--fresh, well-made, and definitely something we'd order again. The miso soup, however, was disappointing. It was very salty, and the portion felt small for the $5 price point (most places charge closer to $2.50-$3.50). We actually had to add hot water to dilute it. It was also listed as agedashi tofu miso soup, but it didn't include agedashi tofu - it was aburaage instead. The cucumber sunomono was also on the saltier side. Overall, prices are a bit high--likely due to the location--and parking in the area can be challenging. That said, the sushi itself was solid, so it's still a decent option if you're in the neighborhood.

Came in on a business Friday night and was able to get seated quickly at the bar. Waitress was super nice. Loved the decor and interior of the restaurant and the Japanese comic book receipt holder at the end. Everything we ordered was chef's kiss and melted in our mouths. Started with the mango coconut ceviche that came with shrimp chips. It was so flavorful and light. My friend got the Sumo roll, which was fulfilling and delicious, and I got the Kraken roll. The tuna melted in mouth and was delicious. To end the night, we each got the caramel matcha flan and that was also chef's kiss! I can't wait to come back and try more options from the menu. If you're ever in the Hillcrest area and looking for fresh, mouth watering sushi, hit this place up!

Review is for Saturday daytime for a party of 2. Pros: - No wait and patio seating available for my dog. - Sushi was fresh! I saw that they even have affordable omakase sets ($50~ average). That is a DEAL. - The place is small, but clean and everyone was so friendly! Great for dates and small hangouts..too small for large parties IMO. Cons: - Parking can be difficult since it's in the middle of Hillcrest congested area, but there's a public parking lot across the street. I will be back for sure to check out that omakase set.

My friends and I were craving sushi after coming from the beach. We basically googled sushi spots and ultimate landed at this spot. Neither of us had been here before so we decided to try it. The place was super clean and bright. It's street parking so be prepared to hunt depending on what time you go. We were the only individuals there so we were greeted and seated immediately. Our waitress was very nice and knowledgeable of the menu as we all had questions. She made good suggestions for my friends. I decided to stick to what I know since I do not eat raw sushi. My friends ordered the Point Break and Mr. Miyagi. They cleaned their plates and particularly liked the Miyagi the most. I did not try it as I don't raw when it comes to sushi. lol So I took their word for it. I ordered the crunchy and California roll. This was my first time, and there weren't many cooked options so I stuck to what I knew. My rolls were not tight and were coming undone or weren't fully wrapped which made me have to work a little harder with my chopsticks. The rolls were good and tasted as expected. Overall, this was a good spot and would recommend!

Strike 1. Strike 2. Third time was the charm. And it was Dashi up in Hillcrest. To explain. Fellow Sushi lover and I struck out a two spots in Banker's Hill before Dashi. One didn't have availability for hours and the second was closed. Ended up in a public lot across the street. $12. Not bad I guess. Didn't feel like doing laps looking for street parking. Entrance to the lot is on Fifth. Dashi is on across the street on the corner of Fifth and University. Walking in, place was packed. But after just a few minute wait, two spots at the counter was cleared for us. Gave us time to take pictures of the artwork on the walls. Liked the decor - clean, modern and simple. Sushi counter with the hot dishes prepped behind in the kitchen - open for viewing. Service was attentive and friendly. Refills without asking - even at one point just dropping off a carafe of water. Business was steady and though it's not a large dining area, the staff was on it. As for the food - we shared: halibut crudo, salmon carpaccio, nigiri set, sashimi combo, miso soup and some picked cucumbers/seaweed. See pics. Decent portion sizes - nice and fresh. Nothing was left over. It's a cool spot. I would definitely make a return visit.

We grabbed a late dinner and ordered the following to share: salmon carpaccio, halibut crudo, sashimi flight, classic nigiri set, and 2 bowls of miso soup. It was nice that the restaurant provided a bowl of complimentary pickled seaweed & cucumber. Service was very friendly, food was reasonably priced, and everything was fresh and delicious. We loved the murals on the wall, really beautiful! Definitely check them out!

    Calamari
    Mark L.

Finding good sushi in San Diego can feel like a gamble... this place was a very welcome surprise. Everything we ordered was fresh, well-balanced, and actually thoughtfully put together, flavors that that worked. The Calamari was light and crispy (not greasy), and that dipping sauce was one of those "don't waste a drop" situations. The sushi itself hit that perfect middle ground between creative and classic... nothing gimmicky, just really solid execution. Atmosphere was clean, relaxed, and easy to settle into without feeling rushed. Service was friendly and attentive. Adding it to the regular rotation!

    Matcha flan
    Jj S.

Dashi is one of favorite sushi spots in SD! They serve quality, flavorful sushi with a variety of flavors, all for a very reasonable price. We ordered three different rolls plus the matcha flan for dessert, and enjoyed every single bite. Though it was a Saturday, we were able to sit down immediately around 5pm, right before it got busy. The service was quick and attentive, the staff friendly, and the ambiance enjoyable.

The server had a couple of hiccups with an incorrect food order and totally separate billing issue (which by their reaction I would assume was an off night) but other food delivery staff and bussing staff were timely and professional. I would recommend reservations. I was able to secure a seat (due to showing for dinner around 4 pm or so), but the restaurant filled up nicely and hosted about 4 anniversary's and 1 birthday in my time there. Dress attire seemed casual but there is definitely a more elevated clientele so I would recommend a thoughtful outfit for the experience.

I love that it is dog friendly, inside and out. My dog loves going there and she makes friends each time. A change that they made recently is that the main garden area is now child-free, which was a positive change in my options, as it had gotten a bit chaotic in the past with children not being very well supervised. Also, the prices have gone up ($18 per glass). Unfortunately, I found the pours to be somewhat inadequate, though it depended which staff member was pouring the wine. They do not allow for outside food, and only make certain dishes certain days of the week, which unfortunately doesn't allow for many options if you are hungry. Water is readily available inside and outside. All in all, it is a lovely place with good wine to come with friends and your 4-legged friends. It has gotten a bit pricey, and I do wish we could bring out own snacks, but I still enjoy going and am sure that I will be back.

The sausage in this is really yummy and nicely paired with the charred broccoli. I'd recommend this one - Branzino: delicious. Comes de-boned which is appreciated, and is deliciously flaky. Get this! - NY Strip: ok I know I've said "get this" for basically everything....but seriously get this one. The presentation is beautiful and the squash, bone marrow, and everything else on top were very tasty. This was our favorite dish!
