One visit to Cafe Coyote and it's so easy to understand why this is a long running success!! The food was truly perfection - everything we ate had us remarking it was the best version we'd ever had at a restaurant. The food was fresh, flavorful, and tasted homemade. The freshly made tortillas were so crazy delicious! The drinks were strong and yummy. What made our visit extra special was our lovely server, Aide. She was so sweet to our boys, made the best recommendations, and felt like a longtime friend. What a wonderful human - we would absolutely request to be seated in her section again. We drove down from a day in Escondido and will definitely be back.

Tourists Will Be Happy. Locals Already Have Their Spot. I brought family here because they were visiting San Diego and wanted to experience Old Town. We arrived on Sunday, in the summer, around 5 pm and waiting time was five minutes. But ten minutes later, there was a long line. As a local, I knew we weren't eating the best Mexican food in the county-but we were also under time constraints. The fresh tortillas were as expected hotv right off the grill. Flour is best. Chips and salsa disappeared fast too. The entrees? Chicken enchilada combo red sauce, chicken enchilada combo green sauce & Chipotle La Crema camarones. As the local I had two bites. Beans and rice were dry and hard. My family enjoyed theirs and ate the rest for leftovers the following day. I wasn't impressed. On their behalf, nothing was bad; it just never reached the point where I'd think, "I need to come back." The service moved at the same pace as the kitchen, slow, and our server had just enough attitude to be noticeable. Were day outside and the cleanliness of the tables, chairs, gross asf dirty menus and trash under tables was not okay. I shouldn't have needed to ask for a different seating table with the side eye from the server. If you're visiting Old Town, good choice. Non-Mexican food experiencers will stop the blasphemy of saying Taco Bell is Mexican food. If you're a local desiring Mexican food, you probably already know where you're going instead.

First time here, looks amazing from the outside.. THE GRUB : We tried the surf and turf burrito on a fresh, handmade tortilla, and the great amount of carne asada and well-balanced amount of shrimp, rice, and cabbage, as well as the creamy aioli sauce inside, made it one of the best surf and turf burritos I've had in San Diego. My only issue here was the shrimp were not seasoned enough they look boiled, not cooked in seasoning. The chicken fajitas were very good, well-seasoned and tasty, and the flavor of the onions and peppers, along with the fresh-made tortillas, made it a well-balanced fajita meal. We also had the Mexican protein bowl, which had carnitas, beans, rice, pico, sour cream, guacamole, and cheese on a bed of lettuce. Every meal consumed was 5/5 stars. Our server, Adria S., was a little slower than I wanted on refills, but my cup never went completely empty, and I believe that's why the soda cups are absolutely huge. Overall, Adria was a great server considering the rush. [[HIGHLIGHT]]If I had one complaint, it would be their dog policy. The establishment had dogs who were barking and shaking their fur around people's food. Luckily, they were far enough from me to not be directly experienced or affected, but it was still super annoying that this establishment would not have a separate area for people and their dogs. Pretty disgusting as far as I'm concerned, but overall a great experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Did not know what to expect, but they were the only establishment who could accommodate a party of eight at 6:30 in the evening, so we decided to go for it. I'm glad we did. This was a five out of five star location, as the tortillas were freshly made in a little booth around the corner. We could tell that this was going to be a great place to eat. We were not disappointed, except on the dog issue, definitely killing my 5 star rating for the otherwise enjoyable experience. RATING 4/5 stars.

Well-illuminated and inviting environment at Cafe Coyote (Old Town San Diego).

My daughter and I stopped by this location, at Cafe Coyote (Old Town San Diego, California), on our first night in the area. We were looking for a fun restaurant that served Mexican food and this looked like the perfect spot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This location is well-illuminated and it has excellent curb appeal, which I'm sure partially contributes to the high volume of customers who stop by here, both from tourists and from locals.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So, in we went. Unfortunately, we arrived five minutes before they were closing, and I could see that they were starting to close the place down for the night. The host offered to seat us anyway, but I decided not to eat here because I did not want to feel rushed with the experience. My daughter and I decided to come back another day, earlier in the evening. For our second visit, we were seated almost immediately, even though the place was busy and we did not make a reservation in advance. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were originally seated indoors, but after five minutes of sitting there I could tell that the noise level was just too loud and that it would not have been enjoyable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We quickly decided to relocate and sit outside where the noise level was not quite so loud so that my daughter and I could have a nice conversation. It was also nicer outside because it happened to be a warm summer evening with a comfortable temperature and a slight breeze[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. After being seated, our waiter stopped by and introduced himself to us. His name was "Tony P." After eating several chips with salsa, which were delicious, we were ready to place our orders. I ordered the "Coyote Tacos," which are two crunchy tacos filled with your choice of shredded chicken or shredded beef. The tacos come topped with lettuce, cotija cheese and salsa fresca. I decided to get my tacos with beef, and my daughter ordered the same thing, but with chicken. The taco plates are served with rice and beans on the side. I ordered a Pepsi to drink with my meal, and my daughter ordered a mock-a-rita. Our waiter, Tony, was attentive, friendly, and professional throughout our experience. My meal was really delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you are in the area and you want to enjoy wonderful Mexican food in a fun atmosphere, you should definitely check this place out. It can be a bit loud due to the high volume of customers, but it will most likely be a pleasant and memorable experience[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]].

[[HIGHLIGHT]]I will say the set up, decor and ambiance is what drew me in. Love the colorful flags, love the painted tiles everywhere and love how you see handmade tortillas made in the open.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I did get seating right away so that was nice. My server was alright, but it was quite a busy time so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Food unfortunately wasn't as tasty as I'd expected. The table salsa was very bland and tasted more like tomato sauce and the chips were average at best (you'd think if they have folks making handmade tortillas then their tortilla chips would taste authentic...nope). I ordered the birria taco plate and I was disappointed with the meat. Meat was wayyyyy too dry for birria and it didn't come with a side of consume. What?! Anytime, anywhere I've ordered birria tacos it ALWAYS comes with a side of consume. Smh. The saving grace of the food was, it tasted better as reheated leftovers the next morning for breakfast than when I was served them hot and fresh the day before as dinner. Honestly though maybe my expectations were too high. After all it's right in the middle of Old Town San Diego and the place is one of a dozen with Mexican restaurants in a couple blocks and crawling with tourists. ‍

Cafe Coyote is a fun and vibrant place in Old Town San Diego. Extensive menu of delicious Mexican food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Large restaurant with outside and inside seating and different floors.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There's a lot going on but the servers make you feel like you are their only customer. Great experience with lively atmosphere and good food

I called someone and asked where I should eat, she said this location had okay food but I thought trying the highest reviewed item would be good. Rice, beans, and tacos (3) all underseasoned and my plate was $30. Good portion sizes, can't say I recommend the food from here though, I was disappointed. I'm not sure what the hype was in the other reviews. Good host, and I had absolutely wonderful service from Alejandro my waiter who was so attentive and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the atmosphere was lovely. Some musicians came up and offered to play us a song while we were eating which added to the great ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

I LOVE their homemade tortillas and to be honest all of their foods . Went with Pozole tonight and their XL bowl was more than enough. Fun time with a big party (40+) and a "good time was had by all"

This is a huge restaurant in Old Town. We decided to go here because it was across the street from the Whaley House and there was no wait. We were a big group of 8 that Saturday evening. The decor is very cute with lots of seating inside and outside on their central patio. We were seated right away and our waiter took all our orders. This is a very busy restaurant with staff bustling around everywhere. They have delicious freshly made flour tortillas so I always try to order a dish with them. The portions are generous so most dishes can be shared if you want to split a meal or take the leftovers home. Everyone was happy with the orders. The shrimps in my dish was so good! Not overcooked and fresh.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Great ambiance & vibes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was friendly & efficient. The bathrooms could use some attention. My flautas were good. Beans & rice were just okay. The blended mango margarita was good but I've had better. My husband said his birria was good but not the best he's had. Overall, great experience.

This place is amazing! Such a huge restaurant! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambience is awesome![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But let's get to the food! I ordered a blended mango margarita which was delicious! I also ordered the Birria Plate which was really good (my moms is better lol) but what tied it all together was those freshly made tortillas de harina! I actually ordered some extra to finish my Birria! The consume was really tasty the salsa that it came with had a nice kick to it. Also had the beans with chorizo as appetizer . Overall I would so come back to this place when in the area!

I happened to walk by this place and noticed it was pretty busy with a fun atmosphere, so we decided to stop in and give it a try. Even though it was crowded, we got seated pretty quickly. The staff was friendly and welcoming. There were five of us, and four people in our group ordered the lobster because it looked really good on the menu. Each lobster plate was $69.95 and came with beans and rice on the side. Honestly, other than helping fill us up, the beans and rice weren't anything special. As for the lobster, I thought it was pretty small for the price. It was also a little dry, and I honestly didn't enjoy it very much. For almost $70, I feel like I could go to just about any Chinese seafood restaurant near where I live and get a bigger and better lobster meal than this. One of my friends ordered the Carne Asada Plate, which came with steak, beans, and rice. That plate was $24.95 and seemed decent for the price. I also ordered a cocktail, and that was actually one of the highlights for me. It was well made, tasted good, and felt worth the price. The restaurant is colorful and has a fun vibe that makes you feel like you're somewhere in Mexico. Since it's located right in Old Town San Diego, we chose to sit outside and watch people walk by while we ate. To be honest, I probably enjoyed the Old Town atmosphere more than the lobster.

Came here with a group of 17 people. We had made a reservation prior to coming and they were able to accommodate large groups. We saw multiple groups here watching FIFA games. They had live singers coming around and serenading tables. They put us in a room that was secluded so we were able to talk and hear each other well, though it did start to get warm. The hostess was sitting another party there but it was too warm for them and they relocated. The thermostat was reading 81 in the room we were in. We all ordered our food and it came quickly and pretty much at the same time. The non-alcoholic drink cups were a lot larger so it helped to not need refills as much. Water cups were a little smaller but they brought a pitcher that was left at the table so we could refill as needed. We ordered 2 pitchers of Cadillac margaritas and shared amongst the table which was great. Parking around the area could be a little tough during crowded times but a nice stroll around the downtown area is always nice. We strolled into a few shops after eating. Overall a good experience for a large party. Would come back here again.

Do you have lobster puerto Nuevo style ? If so how much?

Yes, we do best in Town! Puerto Nuevo Style Lobster…

    Do you have lobster today?

Yes we do!! Best in town!

    Are dogs allowed?

Yes! We are dog friendly in our outdoor areas. We also have a dog menu 🐕

I'm planning a party for 50 people, you guys have place for this cane of party?

Yes they even offer separated rooms if needed

Planning to go for lunch but two people in our group use walkers and find it difficult to walk from the car into the restaurant. Is there close parking with handicap signs near the restaurant or valet parking available?

They have a free parking garage under the restaurant, as well as a few free spots on the right side of the restaurant. No valet but I'm sure you could pull up front and drop off with the hazards lights. Super friendly staff! Great food

Do they charge a service charge on top of the bill?

I still have my receipt from two weeks ago and it doesn't show a service charge. Just the tax. At the bottom it does indicate that 20% gratuity will be added to parties of 8 or more.

Are dogs allowed on the patio?

No they are not. I have asked.

    When is happy hour?

It's an extremely touristy restaurant in a very touristy area. The bar may have special prices on certain drinks, but it's just a place to take money from tourists.

What Vegetarian options do you have that don't contain lard or chicken broth in the beans, rice or tortillas?

This is a Mexican restaurant. What you're looking for is a vegan restaurant.

I see conflicting comments in the reviews. Can you buy the fresh tortillas by the dozen?

    Sure can

Do they have Mariachis every night?

    Yes

    Do they have Apple Pay?

    Yes!

Do you have Mariachis on Saturday for DINNER and specifically for June 11th, 2022? And do you take…

They do take Reservations, but sometimes it is hard getting through to them by calling. if you have under 6 people you can make reservations on their website.

What time do the Mariachis play on Sundays?

I generally go there on Saturdays or Sundays around brunch time ...the mariachis are there ...they are walking from table to table ...asking for permission to serenade you... And make your visit very special

Do they still have live mariachi bands there during covid time?

Yes they do and they still do pictures table side

    Are you animal friendly?

    No pets, unless service animals

    Do u serve wet burritos?

Yes. They can make your burrito wet! Enjoy

What forms of payment do the street side tortillas take?

    Cash

Can you seat a table of 30? Thank you!

    Yes

Hi I never been here and trying to book a large group for girls' weekend. Is there good shops around this area and things to see? This is for a twenty something crowd. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you

Yes there is the old hard rock which is now called zozo. There is a club their and like a pool party vibe at this hotel. However when covid19 was going on it was more of a chill relax vibe. Their is a drag show spot restaurant near by and a club…

I initially ordered the something and picante (can't remember the full name) and found it to be way too sweet. Then switched to a basic Lalo with soda and lime to cleanse my palette. I'm really glad that I found Oculto because it has been one of the highlights of my San Diego trip. First of all, the concept of the seven deadly sins is really cool. The space is absolutely moody, intimate, and thoughtfully designed. It has an atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and enjoy your drink rather than rush through it. And since I don't really drink, I was definitely going slow. And I was alone, but the good part was I found myself just taking it all in instead of reaching for my phone. I started with an espresso martini-style cocktail that was smooth, balanced, and the perfect way to ease into the evening. For my second drink, I asked for the bartender's choice, and it ended up being one of my favorite cocktails I've had in a long time. It featured lychee, strawberry, and cardamom, and was garnished with a beautiful little rose. It was creative, elegant, and every flavor worked together perfectly. The cocktails were outstanding, but what really made the experience stand out was the service. Devin was an excellent bartender and an amazing conversationalist. He was warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely engaging, making me feel welcome from the moment I sat down. He took the time to craft a drink based on flavors I enjoy, and it was clear he cares about creating a great experience, not just serving drinks. If you're looking for a cocktail bar with incredible drinks, a gorgeous atmosphere, and exceptional hospitality, I can't recommend Oculto enough. Full disclosure, I'm a sucker for a themed speakeasy, and Oculto delivered with its Mexican gothic twist. Entering through a confessional booth, confessing your sins before once again giving over to temptation as you sample seven deadly sins-themed libations; oh yeah, this is the themed spectacle that I adore! For those wanting to visit, Oculto is small and reservations are a must. They also have a two drink minimum and the seatings are timed. Everything we ordered was fantastic and I adored the presentation. My only complaint, and the reason for the four stars, is that despite its small size, service was still on the slower side. I get that the bartenders are making complicated craft cocktails, but when you have a two drink minimum AND a time limit for your guests, maybe speed it up a little bit? We would have loved to order another round but sadly ran out of time on our reservation. But everything else about the bar was fantastic, and I will definitely be back for another night of debauchery in the future!

Starlite!! WOW!…read more Okay, Starlite... now I finally understand what all the buzz is about! I've driven past this place more times than I can count, and every time I pass it on the 5, I see a line of people wrapped around the building waiting to get inside. Naturally, I had to find out what all the fuss was about--and let me just say, Starlite is giving "San Diego's cool kid who knows all the best places to be." This has to be one of the most happening spots in San Diego right now, and after experiencing it for myself, I completely understand why. Quick tip before you go: make reservations if you're planning a full night out. You can sometimes walk in early, but reservations let you choose between three distinct areas--and trust me, the ambiance is part of the experience. First, there's The Cave--dark, intimate, and effortlessly sexy. It has that tucked-away vibe that makes you lean in and go, "Okayyy, this is cute!" Perfect for date night or a cozy dinner when you want something more private. Then there's the indoor/outdoor space, which I absolutely loved. Palm trees and greenery create a lush, California-botanical feel that's elevated without trying too hard. And then there's the entry/bar area--lively, social, and very "we came for dinner but somehow stayed for cocktails for three hours." No matter where you sit, you're getting the full Starlite experience. THE FOOD We came to eat--and Starlite delivered. We went as a group, and just a heads up: large parties may be subject to a fee, which is pretty standard. I wouldn't bring a huge group here, but four? Perfect. A friend had already been raving about the burger, so I knew exactly what I wanted. The burger. Period. What I didn't realize? It already comes with fries. So yes... I also ordered scalloped potatoes. My husband got the burger with mac & cheese, and we added Thai carrots to balance things out--or at least pretend we were being responsible. Then the food arrived. And I was like... "Wait... where did these fries come from?" Because these fries? Golden, crispy, perfectly seasoned, and dangerously good. The kind you stop talking for. And the burger? Baby. Medium-well, caramelized onions, melted cheese--everything blended perfectly. But the real star was the garlic sauce. That sauce deserves its own review. If I could bottle it, I'd be writing this from a yacht. It took everything from great to "Ohhh, this is why people come back." The scalloped potatoes were rich, creamy, and hearty. The pepper jack mac & cheese was another standout--creamy, cheesy, with just enough kick and corkscrew noodles holding onto all that goodness. Comfort food, but make it chic. Our friends also ordered the shrimp with cocktail sauce, which they raved about for being fresh, large, and flavorful. The Dijon chicken looked incredible and got rave reviews at the table as well. So yes--we over-ordered. And no, we didn't regret it. THE VIBE Starlite nails the atmosphere. It's stylish without being pretentious, trendy without trying too hard, and intimate without feeling cramped. Even the bathrooms deserve a mention. They have a cool vault-like design, and the women's restroom includes thoughtful touches like mints and feminine products. Because honestly... A place that keeps you fed AND freshened up? I notice that. SERVICE Huge shout-out to Daniella! She was warm, attentive, accommodating, and super knowledgeable about the menu. She guided us through the favorites and made the whole experience feel easy and elevated. Great service really does change everything. FINAL VERDICT Would I come back? Absolutely. Starlite is the kind of place where you dress up a little, bring your favorite people, order way too much food, sip cocktails, and simply enjoy the night. Perfect for date night, girls' night, or a "let's see what the hype is about" dinner. Food? Ambiance? Aesthetic? Service? Vibe? 10/10 from me. San Diego, you were hiding a gem in plain sight... but I'm in on it now. Highly recommend.

Parking is a nightmare good luck finding parking within a mile of the restaurant. Pros: atmosphere, drinks, service Cons: food wasn't great for the price, restaurant was small and crowded, no parking Service: All of our servers were friendly and very accommodating. Gave us some knowledge on the menu and recommended cocktails based on our preference. I had spilled my drink and they were quick to make me another one. Food: I had intended to get the prime ribeye cap steak but they ran out for the night around 8pm. I shared the steak sampler which came with four different cuts of steak and 4 sauces. I ordered medium and it was cooked medium/medium rare which was fine with me, it also had a good sear, almost burnt though. Out of the four steaks, we only liked two based off flavor and tenderness. The other two were more tough and gamey. None of the sauces really stood out but the bordelaise and horseradish were good. For our sides we got fries, roasted broccoli, and the grilled wedge salad. Fries were average. The roasted broccoli had really good flavor, I expected the broccoli to be al dente but it was cooked to mush and drenched in sauce. The grilled wedge salad was decent, there was a slightly bitter taste to it. I know it says grilled wedge but the experience of biting into the salad and it being both hot and cold was not pleasant. Cocktails: I tried the Honey Ryder and New Wave. These were recommended as the more fruity/sweet cocktails. You can definitely taste the alcohol but it's only 2oz so it's not too strong. Ambience: 10/10 I got seated downstairs by the bar. Only thing about downstairs is that it's too dark to take photos unless you use flash. Overall, I agree with the other reviews saying to go just for drinks and appetizers. I would go again just to sit upstairs and get drinks and take pictures. We left unsatisfied and ended up getting in-n-out after.

They also offer a great happy hour special Tuesday through Friday with $5 off pizzas. I don't remember the exact hours, so you'll want to check those before visiting. One of the things I love most about this place is the variety. There are three different brewery stations throughout the venue. I got a flight from the back room, where they serve mead, which is tough to find around San Diego. I ordered a flight, which came with six selections, and every single one was excellent. The staff here are fantastic. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and one of the chefs even came out to give the pups some pepperoni, which was a nice touch that definitely stood out. The space itself is huge with plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. It's a great place for groups to gather, relax, and enjoy a few drinks without feeling cramped. Overall, this is a fun and unique spot with great food, excellent drinks, and outstanding service. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back.

The main food available is from Pizza Cassette, which has delicious sandwiches and wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza pies. Drinks are available from a brewery, a trendy and unique wine spot, and a meadery! Truly something for everyone. It's dog friendly and great for groups to still feel intimate with standing areas, barrel table tops and picnic style tables. There's usually always something happening like trivia night or live music, but heads up, they don't stay open too late - won't be an issue for most, but in case you're looking for a spot at 8pm, double check the hours, especially for food.

My friend is ready to redecorate his place with Moroccan lamps now. The only negative was our fault...we decided to go two days ago and the only reservation left was at 8:45. I think IO more beautiful at night, so we were looking forward to it nonetheless. We arrived around 8 and ordered a bottle of wine in the waiting area/courtyard ramp. Such an interesting layout, but it works! We got to sit at a table right next to the waterfall and pond. Our server was very nice. Probably the only slip-up in service, was that our main came out when we had barely put a dent in apps. We were probably chatting and sipping on wine too much? The expo realized, kept the mains, and said take your time. Then he brought out mains when we were ready. Everything on the menu sounded amazing. My friend and I decided to both get the steak on the hot stone. It comes out raw and you have to keep track of time to cook it how you like it. You can choose flavored salts and butters and sauces for the side. We also shared the pickled strawberry salad. It had lots of toppings, flavor, and textures. The pozole verde was also excellent.
